The body count from the conflict in Yemen surpassed 60,000 last week, according to an independent tally, yet mass media continue to cite old figures that heavily underestimate the devastation, an informed researcher has told RT. More than 60,000 people have been killed in Yemen since January 2016, according to a new report by Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), which estimated that nearly half of those deaths occurred this year. “From what we can see from the reporting at least, there has been quite a general lazy attitude in using, for instance, the 10,000 figure provided by the UN, the sole official figure since 2016. And still many newspapers and media outlets are using that, which significantly downplays the devastation,” said Andrea Carboni, one of the researchers behind the report, who feels the crisis in Yemen has gone largely under-reported. The death toll is likely to increase further, amid an ongoing battle for Yemen’s port city of Hodeidah, despite a UN-brokered ceasefire. It was agreed between the Saudi-backed government of Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and the Houthi rebel group last Thursday, but the truce was pushed back at least until Tuesday, as warring parties refuse to honor it. According to reports, the Arab coalition launched new airstrikes on the port city on Sunday, while clashes continue to plague the region. “We know already that there are pockets of famine reported in several areas and 85,000 people may have also died because of malnutrition and diseases connected to it,” Carboni said. More than three years of hostilities have taken a devastating toll on Yemen, with both the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition accused of committing various crimes. Millions of people, including children, are at risk of starvation, while over half of Yemen’s population relies on aid to survive. A strict sea and air blockade of Yemen continues to cause shortages of essential supplies like food, medicines and fuel. The country also suffers from rampant diseases like measles, diphtheria and cholera, exacerbated by the lack of healthcare services, water treatment facilities, and other crucial civilian infrastructure damaged by the Saudi-led bombings. Numerous NGOs throughout the conflict noted that Saudi airstrikes have been responsible for a large share of civilian deaths, by often “mistakenly” targeting marketplaces, funeral processions and weddings. Microsoft has made billions from its extensive library of software patents. A number of Android vendors, including Samsung, pay the company a royalty on each phone they ship to license patents such as the ones covering the exFAT file system. But that situation may be coming to an end with the announcement today that Microsoft is joining the Open Invention Network (OIN).
The Open Invention Network is a group of about 2,400 companies around the world that have agreed to cross-license their patents on a royalty-free basis for use by the “Linux System,” a collection of projects including the Linux kernel, many tools and utilities built on top of Linux, and large parts of Android. Member companies also promise not to assert their patents against the Linux Community.
This move should put an end to the lingering threat of patent lawsuits from Microsoft that many Linux and Android companies have faced. With that threat gone, it should also put an end to the royalties that the company was collecting from Android vendors.

BERLIN/MUNICH — Audi has discovered emissions-related problems with a further 60,000 cars, it said on Tuesday, dealing a fresh setback to parent Volkswagen more than 2½ years after it first admitted to cheating U.S. diesel exhaust tests.
Audi said it had stopped deliveries of A6 and A7 models with a certain type of diesel engine after finding a previously unidentified problem with emissions software. It did not give details of the problem.
A person familiar with the matter said 60,000 cars would have to be recalled for a software update, taking the total number of vehicles with Audi engines to be recalled over the “dieselgate” emissions scandal to more than 900,000.
VW has recalled millions of vehicles in total, bought back and parked 350,000 of them in the United States, and paid out billions of dollars in fines since it admitted in September 2015 to using illegal “defeat device” software that masked the level of pollution emitted by its diesel engines.
Having announced a multibillion-dollar investment in electric vehicles, and a new chief executive only last month, Europe’s largest carmaker has been looking to move on from the biggest business crisis in its history.
Audi’s announcement came a day before its annual shareholder meeting, where it was hoping to focus on its electric car plans.
The German transport ministry said earlier on Tuesday that the KBA motor vehicle authority had summoned Audi for a formal hearing about its A6/A7 diesel models.
“The KBA has requested a hearing on suspicion the Audi V6TDI A6/A7 models have been fitted with an illegal defeat device,” the ministry said in a statement.
German magazine Der Spiegel was first to report that Audi had discovered the problem. Porsche has demanded millions in damages from its sister brand. Porsche’s former R&D chief was arrested last fall over Audi’s role in the scandal, and Porsche’s current powertrain chief, formerly with Audi, was recently arrested as well.
Prosecutors in Munich, which in the past have raided Audi’s headquarters and are investigating 18 of its current and former employees, said on Tuesday they would widen their probe to include the affected A6/A7 models.
However, Evercore ISI analyst Arndt Ellinghorst did not see a big financial impact from the latest setback.
“As painful, annoying and incomprehensible as these issues are, they will unlikely trigger massive incremental legal risks. Best guess, this could trigger 15-30 million euros in additional costs which should be covered by VW’s existing diesel provisions,” he said in a note.
Audi said it had informed the U.S. monitor tasked with overseeing VW’s post-dieselgate reforms of its latest problem, but added no cars in the United States were affected by it.
Audi said in November 2015 — two months after the admission of wrongdoing by VW — that defeat device software was installed in about 85,000 cars in the United States fitted with its larger engines.

For Royal Caribbean, bigger is better.
In March, the cruise line debuted the world’s largest cruise ship, the 228,081-ton Symphony of the Seas. The ship follows the previous record holder, Royal Caribbean’s 226,963-ton Harmony of the Seas. But according to CEO Michael Bayley, a ship’s size is a function of the company’s desire to pack enough dining, entertainment, and lodging options to make all of its passengers happy — not a goal in itself.
“When we set out to design ships originally in the concept phase, we don’t get caught up in size. We really get caught up in concept and what we’re trying to deliver,” he said in an interview with Business Insider.
At 1,188 feet long and over 215 feet wide, the Symphony of the Seas has a lot to offer. The ship’s 22 restaurants, 42 bars and lounges, theaters, ice rink, and zip line are just a fraction of the attractions available to passengers.
Here’s what else it has in store.

Authorities in South Korea announced that 63,767 iPhone users in the country have lodged a mass lawsuit against US tech giant Apple for slowing down older models.
It is South Korea’s biggest-ever class action lawsuit, and demands that Apple pay millions of dollars in damages.
According to Xinhua news agency, the users are represented by local law firm Hannuri. It has filed the class action lawsuit with the Seoul Central District Court against Apple and Apple Korea, the local unit of the iPhone manufacturer.
The iPhone customers are demanding damages worth 200,000 won ($ 188) per plaintiff, or 12.75 billion won ($ 12 million) in total.
Media reported that around 400,000 iPhone customers originally sought to join the legal action, but the number fell in the course of verifying identification and providing the necessary documents.
A wave of legal cases across the world followed Apple’s acknowledgement that it had slowed down iPhones as they got older. The company claimed that it had algorithms in place to keep an iPhone running at optimal performance if there was an older battery inside that can’t keep up with the required power. The measure was aimed at preventing devices from unexpected shutdowns and keeping them running at their best.
Hannuri said that though Apple recognized the underperformance of iPhones via the iOS upgrade, it covered up the truth in offering the software to hide faulty batteries, prevented customer secession and promoted the sale of new models.
Earlier this year, civic group activists representing hundreds of iPhone users filed their respective class action suits against Apple and Apple Korea for damages worth 2.2 million won ($ 2,070) per person.

“Huh, a $ 60,000 Buick.”
That was my first thought after scanning the Monroney sticker for the 2018 Buick Enclave Avenir after it arrived in my inbox along with electronic copies of the usual fleet loan documents. A price tag of $ 60,000 is close to European luxury territory, as well, so Buick is really trying to make a statement with its fully redesigned, three-row crossover.

HQ Trivia doesn’t work like other gaming apps you might have played: it’s free to play, but hands out real cash prizes if you win. Another big difference from its competition is that you can’t play whenever you’d like: You can only play HQ Trivia twice a day, when the app streams a video with a live game show host who rattles off questions in real time against a swirling polka-dot background
The app sends push notifications when the game is about to start; everyday at 3 p.m. ET and 9 p.m ET. There’s a countdown, and then the round begins with a series of multiple-choice questions that draw from historical events, literary devices, celebrity knowledge, and more. The few times I played, I wasn’t able to get beyond the fifth question, but other players were luckier: one game divvied up $ 1,000 between 8 winners (that’s $ 125 per person), and the app’s co-founder, Rus Yusupov, has plans to up the ante. “I’d love to give away a million dollars someday,” Yusupov told Business Insider.
This isn’t Yusupov’s first foray into video apps ― he was a key player in the development of Vine in 2012. One of Vine’s co-founders, Colin Kroll, also joined Yusupov’s venture into gaming, and Yusupov says the hype surrounding HQ Trivia is similar to the success Vine experienced early on.
You’ll typically find about 60,000 players tuning into a single game on HQ Trivia, with varying cash prizes awarded.

During a discussion at the Aspen Security Forum on Friday, Army Gen. Raymond Thomas, head of US Special Operations Command, cited estimates saying that the US-led fight against ISIS had killed 60,000 to 70,000 ISIS militants.
It is not the first time US military officials have given estimates for ISIS body counts — Thomas himself cited a similar number in February — but those estimates have been made despite doubts among military leaders and government policymakers about their accuracy and usefulness.
When asked about the whereabouts of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Thomas downplayed the ISIS leader’s influence and said that while Baghdadi’s fate is currently unknown, “we will get him eventually.”
To underline his point, Thomas elaborated on the damage done to ISIS’ personnel network.
“I mean, everyone who worked for him initially is dead or gone. Everybody who stepped to the plate the next time, dead or gone,” Thomas said. “Down through a network where we have killed in conservative estimates 60,000 to 70,000 of his followers, his army. They declared an army, they put it on the battlefield, and we went to war with it.”
Those comments come several months after Thomas claimed that more than 60,000 ISIS fighters had been killed since the campaign against the group started in summer 2014.
“I’m not into morbid body counts, but that matters,” he said in February, speaking at the National Defense Industrial Association’s Special Operations/Low Intensity Conflict conference. “So when folks ask, do you need more aggressive [measures], do you need better [rules of engagement], I would tell you that we’re being pretty darn prolific.”

Body counts — which earned scorn during the Vietnam War — are considered a dubious metric by which to measure the success of a military campaign, particularly ones against groups like ISIS. It is typically hard to estimate how many fighters such groups have, and it is not always clear how many have been killed during military engagements.
In 2014, an observer group estimated the terror group had 100,000 fighters. The Pentagon said in summer 2016 that it had just 15,000 to 20,000 fighters left in Iraq and Syria.
The February number given by Thomas was not much higher than the 50,000 ISIS-dead estimate made by US officials in December. But the December number given by US officials was twice as high as the figure cited by UK Defense Minister Michael Fallon that same month.

And the figure cited by Thomas on Friday was only slightly higher than what he said in February, despite the increased intensity of anti-ISIS operations in Iraq and Syria in the intervening months.
Air operations against ISIS in Iraq and Syria increased significantly after Trump took office in January, with military leaders emphasizing an “annihilation campaign” aimed at eliminating ISIS fighters.
But those air operations appear to have caused a considerable increase in civilian deaths.
The US government reversed its policy on body counts several times during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and numbers given by the government have been undercut or criticized by civilian and military personnel alike.
“My policy has always been, don’t release that kind of thing,” Chuck Hagel, who served as secretary of defense from 2013 to 2015, told CNN in December 2016. “Body counts, I mean, come on, did we learn anything from Vietnam?”
