<p>Why did you want to do the show?</p>
<p>I had done a lot of walking programmes in the past, hardly speaking to anyone, but one of the most obvious and interesting parts of these walks is that they are populated, usually, with people with a lot of grit who are often doing very interesting things with their lives.</p>

<p> How many miles did you walk? About 180. But Alfred Wainwright’s book on the coast to coast walk, on which we based the series, says: “Don’t stick to my walk; there are as many walks as there are people.”</p>
<p>Wainwright went from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay but I didn’t stick to what he was doing.</p>
<p>The bits that I did do meant I was constantly going up and down the same mountain four or five times for different takes.</p>
<p>When you see me looking tired, that’s real.</p>

<p>What sticks in your mind?</p>
<p>Seeing RAF Fylingdales in Yorkshire, with its massive radar pyramid, for the first time and thinking: when medieval people first saw a Norman castle I bet they had the same reaction.</p>
<p>And when I got to half  a mile out from Whitby I saw a school of whales. You bet your bum it was exciting!</p>
<p>Who was most interesting person?</p>
<p>The guy who made 100 different flavours of Scotch eggs in the Lake District. The one with feta and olives was sublime.</p>

<p>How long was filming? We didn’t do it all at once. I had a lot of TV commitments last summer, each day was tough but it wasn’t gruelling.</p>
<p>What was in your rucksack?</p>
<p>A warmer coat, as when we stopped I would get very cold. Water. My iPhone because I am sad, a novel, a map book and probably a rather old banana.</p>
<p>Is there anywhere you haven’t been in the UK?</p>
<p>There are still loads of places I have never been to, such as the west coast of Ireland.</p>

<p>Are you a rural man? Rural Paddington in London.</p>
<p>Would you go back into comedy?</p>
<p>Yes, I did Man Down with Greg Davies last year and when those opportunities arrive I am very happy to do them.</p>
<p>What have you got coming up?</p>
<p>I am doing another series of Ancient Tracks for Channel 4. Friends thought it was going to be about Jimi Hendrix! </p>
