  • Ross Ulbricht was sentenced to life in prison in 2015 after being convicted of running the dark web marketplace Silk Road.
  • His family have set up the twitter account @RealRossU, which relays messages Ulbricht dictates from prison.
  • The account has helped get over 55,000 signatures for a petition asking for clemency for Ulbricht.
  • His supporters argue Silk Road was no different to eBay and it’s not his fault that people used it to sell drugs.

Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the dark web marketplace Silk Road, is dictating messages from prison that his family are delivering to the outside world via Twitter.

The Twitter account @RealRossU was opened in June and sent its first tweet on July 19. The tweet linked to a handwritten note posted on FreeRoss.org, a website run by “family, friends and supporters” of Ulbricht. The note said that the fact it was posted on FreeRoss.org proved its authenticity. Since then, the account has said Ulbricht is dictating his tweets over the phone to supporters.

After Microsoft officials dismissed evidence that more than 10,000 Windows machines on the Internet were infected by a highly advanced National Security Agency backdoor, private researchers are stepping in to fill the void. The latest example of this open source self-help came on Tuesday with the release of a tool that can remotely uninstall the DoublePulsar implant.

On late Friday afternoon, Microsoft officials issued a one-sentence statement saying that they doubted the accuracy of multiple Internet-wide scans that found anywhere from 30,000 to slightly more than 100,000 infected machines. The statement didn’t provide any factual basis for the doubt, and officials have yet to respond on the record to requests on Tuesday for an update. Over the weekend, Below0day released the results of a scan that detected 56,586 infected Windows boxes, an 85-percent jump in the 30,626 infections the security firm found three days earlier.

Both numbers are in the conservative end of widely ranging results from scans independently carried out by other researchers over the past week. On Monday, Rendition Infosec published a blog post saying DoublePulsar infections were on the rise and that company researchers are confident the scan results accurately reflect real-world conditions. Rendition founder Jake Williams told Ars that the number of infected machines is “well over 120k, but that number is a floor.”

International auctioneers Coys found the car and estimate that it could fetch £55,000 at their Spring Classic auction on Wednesday. 

The brand-new 1996 Mercedes SL500 was stored in a central London garage in Knightsbridge, before the driver lost the keys and never used it again. 

Since it was bought car has only done 80 miles since it was bought and it is in fantastic condition. 

Chris Routledge, CEO of Coys, said: “This is a car with a fantastic story! Purchased as a birthday present and driven only 80 miles before the owner lost the keys and never drove it again. 

“It even comes with a letter written by the owner’s butler verifying its mileage and its provenance.” 

He added: “Had she not lost the keys and used it regularly, we estimate it would now be worth between £5,000 and £7,000, but the fact that it has kept such a low mileage and has not been driven in more than twenty years makes it worth between £45,000 and £55,000.

“What happened with the keys remains a mystery but the car comes with new keys for the new owner. 

“Perhaps you shouldn’t panic the next time you misplace your car keys.” 

Mercedes-Benz SL500 R129 roadsters were produced between 1989 through to 2002 and were some of innovative features for the time including electric mirrors, windows and electronically controlled damping. 

This version of the car is one of the more south after versions which boasts numerous factory extras including heated front seats, 6 CD multi-changer, upgraded radio and wood-leather steering wheel.

It has been given a light re-commissions and will come with an MOT certificate until March 2018. 

Routledge said: “This unblemished Mercedes-Benz must surely be one of the lowest mileage R129 series SL500 in existence. Virtually in new condition for its age, it is certainly a brand new classic!”

An iconic 37 year-old, 55,000 ton archive building in Atlanta, Georgia, known locally as the “white ice cube,” was flattened on Sunday with ruthless efficiency… and it was all captured on camera.

Some 500 pounds (226 kilograms) of explosives were detonated to bring down the Hammond Exchange Building in a controlled implosion triggered by Devin Simmons, a 5-year-old patient from the local Children’s Health Care of Atlanta facility, according to WSBTV.

In the late 1990s, engineers determined that the cost of refurbishing the building, which had sustained structural damage due to groundwater and the construction of a nearby freeway, would be prohibitively expensive when compared to the cost of simply moving the archives.

The building was officially vacated in 2016.

So effective was the demolition that the building fell to the ground at an aesthetically pleasing 45 degree angle.

Its unique silhouette had marked the skyline for decades and its absence was soon noticed once the dust had settled.

Though roads and bridges in the immediate vicinity were closed as a precaution, the demolition went smoothly and without incident.

The site is due to be redeveloped as a new judicial center that will house the Georgia Court of Appeals and the Georgia Supreme Court reports NBC.
