Even though Twitter’s terms of service explicitly ban posts glorifying self-harm and media depicting “visible wounds,” independent researchers report that Twitter too often seemingly looks the other way regarding self-harm. Researchers from the Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI) estimate there are “certainly” thousands, and possibly “hundreds of thousands,” of users regularly violating these terms without any enforcement by Twitter. The result of Twitter’s alleged inaction: Since October, posts using self-harm hashtags have seen “prolific growth.”
According to reports, Twitter was publicly alerted to issues with self-harm content moderation as early as last October. That’s when a UK charity dedicated to children’s digital rights, 5Rights, reported to a UK regulator that there was a major problem with Twitter’s algorithmic recommendation system. 5Rights’ research found that Twitter’s algorithm “was steering accounts with child-aged avatars searching the words’ self-harm’ to Twitter users who were sharing photographs and videos of cutting themselves.”
In October, Twitter told Financial Times that “It is against the Twitter rules to promote, glorify, or encourage suicide and self-harm. Our number-one priority is the safety of the people who use our service. If tweets are in violation of our rules on suicide and self-harm and glorification of violence, we take decisive and appropriate enforcement action.”

]]>Americans were the third-largest group to seek asylum in Canada in 2017, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, their numbers only surpassed by Nigerians and Haitians. A total of 2,550 US citizens applied for Canadian asylum in 2017 – an eye-popping sixfold increase from the previous year, and more than at any other time in the last quarter-century.
READ MORE: Canada deported hundreds of migrants to war-torn countries – govt data
Immigration experts claim most of the new arrivals are US-born children of Haitian parents hoping to avoid being separated from their families by Trump’s repeal of the Temporary Protected Status that was granted to 59,000 Haitians after 2010’s catastrophic earthquake. Haitians remaining in the US after July 2019 face deportation.
The Guardian humanized those numbers with the story of a family who, inspired by the uplifting tweets of Justin Trudeau, joined over 20,000 would-be refugees in crossing the border on foot at Quebec’s infamous Roxham Road, taking advantage of a now-popular loophole in the Safe Third Country Agreement between Canada and the US that normally forces refugees to apply for asylum in the first country in which they arrive.

— Justin Trudeau (@JustinTrudeau) January 28, 2017
Choosing one’s permanent home based on its leader’s tweets is unusual, to say the least, though it would certainly cut down on attempted immigration into the US if prospective migrants had to read through @realDonaldTrump’s musings.
Trudeau has since backpedaled quite a bit on his arms-wide-open approach, partially because of the influx of migrants through Canada’s southern neighbor, most of whom are ineligible for asylum. Canadian public safety minister Ralph Goodale reminded aspiring migrants earlier this year that there is no “free ticket” into Canada, while the border agency wants to increase deportations of denied asylum claimants by 35 percent. Trudeau’s government has even sent officials to Haiti and Nigeria to tell wannabe immigrants to stay at home.
Perhaps he isn’t so different from Trump after all. The US president addressed the thousands of migrants currently streaming northward in caravans through Mexico, telling them they would not be allowed in unless they applied for entry through legal channels.
So many Americans considered the decision to flee north on election night 2016 that they actually crashed Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration website. Leading the charge were vocally anti-Trump celebrities like Lena Dunham and Barbra Streisand. While most stars who fail to follow through on their public ultimatums act like they never promised to leave, Streisand recently reminded the world of her broken promise during the midterms. “Do I want to move to Canada? I don’t know,” she said again, complaining to a New York Times reporter that Trump was making her fat. As for Dunham, she’s supposedly writing a screenplay about a Syrian refugee – no word yet on whether they end up in Canada.

Over three-fourths of Americans own smartphones, which means that it’s incredibly important for tech companies to nail their mobile apps. But testing those apps to make sure they’re working correctly can be a hassle.
HeadSpin, a Silicon Valley startup, allows developers to easily test, debug and monitor mobile apps and sites in real-time on actual devices. Oftentimes, developers use a simulator on their computers to test these apps, but even then, there might be unexpected bugs on the actual mobile app when used by real customers on a real phone.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

eBay is the world’s biggest online auction site, attracting thousands and thousands of buyers and sellers.
Amongst those are keen coin collectors, who are willing to splash out for seemingly small change.
One coin hoping to attract one of these collectors is a “rare” £1 coin with a significant minting error.
The coin was listed this afternoon by eBay user “robimora-1”, who is based in Wadebridge.
The seller also boats 100 per cent positive feedback, enhancing the reliability of the listing.
Robimora-1 listed the coin as a “Rare deformed pound coin offset print”.
Not elaborating much more in the description, the seller added: “Rare miss print New £1 coin” (sic).
The coin is a 2016 £1 coin, and appears to have a skew print and unusual marks on the outer rim.
Listed for a whopping £500, the seller is also open to having lower offers made on the coin.
The 12-sided £1 coin was minted in 2016, and designed to combat fraud due to two different coloured metals and a hologram underneath the Queen’s effigy.
According the the Royal Mint, many of the old one-colour £1 coins are fake.
The new £1 coin was designed by David Pearce, and features rose, leek, thistle and shamrock encircled by a coronet.
Half a billion of the new £1 coins were minted in 2016, with production rates increased.
The faster rate of production and amount of coins being minted led to mistakes being made in minting.
Many coins were misprinted or featured minting defects, often selling for sky-high prices on eBay.
Earlier this month another rare £1 coin with a minting error was sold for £200 on eBay.
The coin was listed as a “£1 very rare 2017 circulated £1 one pound coin mint error missprint miss strike” [sic].
The description simple read: “Very rare 2017 error £1. Leaked egg.”
A newly minted 2017 £1, the coin had the centre silver circle leaking into the outer gold rim.
The silver had leaked out from its perimeters, causing some of the outer engraving to be printed in silver.
Ebay is a fantastic resource for those looking to sell any rare and valuable coins they come across.
The buying and selling website is also a treasure trove for rare coin collectors seeking out certain coins.
One rare 50 coin is selling for a whopping sum of £500 on the site.
The coin listing is titled: “Rare Suffragettes 50pence coin collection”.
The listing description below reads simply: “one from my rare 50pence collection”.
It currently has five watchers following it on the site.
So what is so distinctive about this particular 50p coin?
The Royal Mint website provides some further details.
The coin’s official title is the 2003 Women’s Social and Political Union 50p, according to the site.
It was first issued in 2003 and has a mintage of 3,124,030.
The description reads: “The figure of a suffragette chained to railings and holding a banner on which appear the letters WSPU, to the right a ballot paper marked with a cross and the words GIVE WOMEN THE VOTE, to the left the value 50 PENCE, and below and to the far right the anniversary dates 1903 and 2003.
“The design featured on the reverse of the 2003 fifty pence coin celebrates the hundredth anniversary of the foundation of the Women’s Social and Political Union, a seminal movement initiated by Emmeline Pankhurst that campaigned passionately for equal voting rights for women.
“Mary Milner Dickens’ sensitively balanced composition conveys the determination and commitment of the pioneering group of women who risked public and private ridicule, and sometimes even imprisonment, in defence of their beliefs.
“The design features some of the most powerful imagery of the period including the WSPU standard, the railings to which women chained themselves, and the Ballot Paper.”
Another rare £2 coin is listed on the eBay platform for the sky high price of £1,675.
The William Shakespeare coin is listed by pennies-2-pounds, who has a 100 per cent positive feedback rating.
It is advertised with the headline: “2016 William Shakespeare £2 Error Strike Plain/Reeded”.
The coin is said to be rarer because of several errors in how it was struck.
For instance, it is missing a large part of the reeding pattern that gives £2 coins their rough edge.
The description reads: “A very collectable rare error coin, the coin has multiple strike errors including a larger than normal centre which spreads towards the date & lettering on both sides, large rims & signs of edge reeding on Reverse surface.
UK could pocket hundreds of pounds flogging their old car tax discs on eBay.
The car tax disc was abolished in October 2014 to make way for the new online system.
Due to the discs now disappearing from car windscreens they have become somewhat collectors items.
In fact, some motorists have pocketed over £500 selling theres on eBay.
Collectors of tax discs are referred to as ‘velologists.’
The term is a combination of the acronym VEL, which stands for vehicle excise licence, and -ologists.
With over 1.7 billion tax discs issued in the UK since 1921, you might think that they wouldn’t attract a hefty price tag.
However, the record amount pay for by a collector was £1,087.80 for tax disc that expired in December 1921, which was the first year they were issued in Britain.
Before that the record for the most expensive tax disc ever sold was £810, for a disc from the same batch.
Currently tax discs are on sale from as little as a few pounds up to £1,000.
The most expensive tax disc on sale on eBay (at the time of writing) is a rare triangular tax disc that is dated 1 Jan December 1931 on sale for £1,000 – although no official bids have been made yet.
Recently, a rare motorcycle licence dated December 1921, in its period tax disc holder, sold for a whopping £361.
Despite the ‘fragile’ condition of the disc, which was originally issued to a Douglas motorcycle, it still attracted the high price tag.
A set of tax discs issued in Northern Ireland for a ‘Morris’ car dated ‘Mar 66, Mar 67, Mar 68, Jul 68, Nov 68 and Mar 69’ sold collectively for £343.
More surprisingly a set of 12 tax discs dated from between 2006 and 2015 sold collectively for £500.
It included some of the last tax discs ever issued in the UK.
A rare tax disc that sold for a cool £500 was still in its original selvedge, expiring 31st December 1921.
Discs in their original selvedge are becoming more sought after by collectors.
The 97 year old piece of paper was in relatively good condition, which is why it attracted the high price tag.
One disc from 2003 managed to sell for £173, as it was made in the first year that tax discs acquired a bar code.
The eBay website is a coin collector’s dream, with all sorts of rare coins circulating on the buying and selling platform.
Some of these coin types are of particular value, selling for hundreds or even thousands to those in the know.
One £2 coin has been listed for the “buy it now” price of £500 on the forum.
This Act of Union coin has a jigsaw design inscribed on it along with two dates: 1707 and 2007.
It is listed by eBay user trishaaa36, who has a 100 per cent positive feedback rating.
The description on the listing reads: “Rare 2 pound coin with puzzle design. Thank you for looking.”
So what are the origins of this special coin design? The Royal Mint website explains what the “linking jigsaw motif” means.
The coin reverse design was created by Yvonne Holton and first issued in 2007.
It commemorates the “Tercentenary of the Act of Union between England and Scotland”.
The description reads: “A design dividing the coin into four quarters, with a rose and a thistle occupying two of the quarters and a portcullis in each of the other two quarters.
“The whole design is overlaid with a linking jigsaw motif and surrounded by the dates ‘1707’ and ‘2007’, and the denomination ‘TWO POUNDS’”.
The coin has a mintage of 7,545,000, according to the Change Checker website.
The edge inscription reads: “UNITED INTO ONE KINGDOM”.
Yesterday, it was revealed a rare Volleyball 50p coin is listed for £1,500 on the eBay forum.
Would you know if you came across a rare coin just like it?
The 50p coin is listed by user mrs_ahmad, who has a 97.9 per cent positive feedback rating.
The listing is titled: “Extremely rare coin on ebay 50 Pence Coin – very rare coin Volleyball (2011).”
The description says there are “very few” of this coin type available on the eBay website.
It reads: “Extremely rare 50 pence coin 2011 50 Pence coin – Volleyball. Very very few on eBay.
“Its is in used condition. Three figures playing beach volleyball, with the London 2012 logo above and the denomination, “50 PENCE”, below.”
