Kia has announced that it will join an expanding line of automakers, including Audi, Ram, Volvo and others, adding ultra-mild 48-volt hybrid systems to their engines. The system works like other systems in that it has a combination starter and generator connected to the engine crank via a belt. It allows the engine to be shut off earlier than simply at a stop, and provides a bit of electrical assistance to reduce how much the engine has to work on takeoff. The system will first be implemented in Europe with the Kia Sportage and with its diesel engine in 2018. In 2019, the Kia Ceed small car will also be offered with the system. Kia says the system will also appear on gasoline engines in the near future. However, a representative from Kia’s U.S. branch wouldn’t comment either way on whether the technology will come to America. We think it’s a pretty safe bet that we’ll see the technology offered in the U.S. soon. Kia makes it clear that this system is designed to be easy to implement. It says there are hardly any packaging issues, usually putting the battery under the trunk floor, and the starter/generator motor doesn’t typically require reworking the engine bay much. It also should work with rear-, front-, or all-wheel-drive layouts and with manual and automatic transmissions. If it were only going to be on diesel engines, we could see how Kia might not bring it, but since it will also be featured on gas engines, we’re sure it will show up on our shores soon. FRANKFURT, Germany — Carmakers squeezed between carbon emissions cuts and falling sales of fuel-efficient diesels have used the Frankfurt auto show to spotlight a future generation of electric cars that will largely come too late to help them out of their bind. But elsewhere at the show, suppliers like Valeo and Delphi are lifting the lid on a quicker fix: affordable 48-volt hybrids. These “mild” hybrids, which add some electric power to existing petrol models without a costly redesign, are now being deployed without fanfare by brands from VW to Volvo. It is diesel’s disgrace and decline, executives and analysts say, that has finally set the stage for mass electrification. While diesel pollution problems became notorious with the Volkswagen test-cheating scandal, the subsequent shift to petrol is bloating carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, making the next round of European Union goals harder to meet. “Our view is that 48 volts on a gasoline engine is an alternative to diesel,” said Karin Thorn, vice president for vehicle propulsion at Volvo. “If and when the diesel market is dropping, something else needs to take its place.” Diesels are stalling already, in fact — and weaker second-hand values suggest the slump can only accelerate. An attention-grabbing pledge by the Swedish carmaker to “electrify” its entire range by 2019, initially hailed as a bold step, now looks more like an industry-wide reality. PSA Group, which had previously seen no need for 48V hybrids, now plans to introduce them “across the board” in response to diesel’s faster-than-expected decline, the Peugeot maker’s programs chief Patrice Lucas told Reuters. HOW IT WORKS By quadrupling the 12-volt standard in conventional car electrics and allowing a beefed-up starter motor to feed extra power to the drivetrain, complementing the combustion engine, carmakers can transform petrol cars into mild hybrids without redesigning the vehicle’s architecture and factory tooling. The motor delivers a noticeable torque boost and recovers braking energy to recharge a battery — smaller and cheaper than those required by electric cars or “full” hybrids such as Toyota’s Prius, which typically run at 100-300 volts. Total manufacturing cost comes in 500-1,000 euros ($ 600-$ 1,200) below an equivalent diesel. “It’s the most interesting enabling technology and will comfortably replace diesel,” said Evercore ISI analyst Arndt Ellinghorst. “It can do the job, and it’s already cheaper — you don’t have to be an early adopter to buy one.” By 2020, the brokerage expects 48V cars to outpace European sales of full hybrids, including plug-ins that can be recharged with a cable and driven in electric-only mode. By 2025, it predicts, they will equip 55 percent of all cars sold. The technology is surfacing first in luxury cars such as the Mercedes S-Class on show at the Frankfurt event — which runs until Sunday — before trickling down to the mass market, chiefly in Europe and China. Volkswagen’s next Golf, a benchmark in compact cars, will arrive with 48V electrics in 2019, and other models will follow, development chief Frank Welsch told Reuters. “The technology has a lot of potential and will make hybrids more affordable for the masses,” Welsch said. Renault, Japanese affiliate Nissan and Hyundai are among other mass car manufacturers with 48V in the pipeline. In 2021, the key EU emissions goal drops to 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer from its current 130 grams — a challenge exacerbated by the replacement of standard lab tests with on-the-road “real driving emissions” measurements. DIESEL HEADACHE Despite incentives, neither battery technology nor charging infrastructure is ready for the mass electric-car uptake required to put a dent in average emissions by then. The headache is compounded by the decline of diesels, which emit 15-20 percent less CO2 than petrol alternatives. Fortunately, 48V hybrids deliver savings in the same bracket. Their simplicity also lets carmakers adjust their fleet emissions on shorter lead times than typically required to redevelop a drivetrain, which may help to avoid stiff EU fines of 95 euros per excess gram of CO2, per vehicle sold. Among suppliers, Valeo stands to benefit most with a 40 percent share of mild-hybrid orders, Citi analysts predict. Continental and Delphi are also well positioned. Paris-based Valeo expects some carmakers to effect more abrupt U-turns than PSA’s — in some cases installing 48V systems without waiting for model facelifts. Innovation director Guillaume Devauchelle declined to name names. “These solutions will become market standards,” Devauchelle said, adding that tougher rules on nitrogen oxide (NOx) pollution from diesels would deepen their cost disadvantage. Later 48V hybrids will squeeze out more efficiency by shifting the electric motor lower down the transmission, below the engine. Valeo has electrified Magna’s Getrag gearboxes and GKN differentials. “What automakers are finding is they need more than just advanced combustion engines to reach the fleet average reductions,” said Mary Gustanski, Delphi’s engineering boss. The supplier is combining 48V hybrids with cylinder deactivation that cuts engine capacity when less power is required, for additional savings. The system is in development with one European and one Chinese carmaker, Gustanstki said. The coming profusion of 48V cars should outsell pricier, higher-voltage hybrid incumbents such as the Prius, as market projections show — a prospect Toyota takes in its stride. Thanks to a quarter-century of hybrid investments, the Japanese carmaker can meet future CO2 targets with ease, global planning chief Didier Leroy said in Frankfurt. “We’re in a different position,” Leroy said. “We don’t have to rush to find a temporary solution — we don’t need to develop 48V to be competitive.” ($ 1 = 0.8340 euros) Reporting by Laurence Frost Related Video:

Despite the advancements in lithium-ion chemistry that makes these battery cells smaller, lighter, and more power-dense, the lead-acid box that occasionally strands you before a job interview is not leaving your car. Not even in the 2018 Audi A8, which features a 48-volt electrical system.

Similar to the systems found in the SQ7 TDI, Porsche Panamera, and Bentley Bentayga, the new A8 employs both 12-volt and 48-volt systems connected by a DC-DC inverter, only their operation is essentially reversed in the A8’s application. Here, the 12-volt system is the subsystem; powered by a conventional battery, it runs lighter-load accessories such as the lighting, stereo, and interior power outlets. It’s the primary 48-volt system that gives the car some hybrid functionality.

In principle, a hybrid like the A8 is old news. General Motors has continued refining its setup, called eAssist, since 2006. A secondary high-voltage battery powers a belt-driven motor-generator attached to the engine, which replaces the traditional alternator and acts as a starter when the engine is warm. Honda’s now-defunct Integrated Motor Assist, first seen on the 1999 Insight, put an electric machine in the place of a torque converter. Neither of those systems could propel a car on electricity alone. Instead of a split-power hybrid as in the Toyota Prius, where a traction motor coupled to the transmission can drive the wheels on full electric power or in tandem with a gasoline engine, hybrids like the eAssist or this A8 can only reduce the engine’s workload under acceleration and very light loads, such as a rolling start. They also help run the vehicle’s 12-volt accessories and allow the engine to shut down when coasting with some light regenerative braking.

But the A8 advances this proven technology. A small 48-volt lithium-ion battery (roughly the same size as the car’s 12-volt battery) powers a water-cooled, belt-driven motor-generator that replaces a conventional alternator (like GM’s eAssist). As in the SQ7 TDI, a conventional 12-volt starter motor is still on board, but thanks to higher voltage, Audi says the A8’s belt-driven machine lets the engine start quicker and more smoothly. When coasting between 34 and 99 mph, the engine shuts off for up to 40 seconds. The system also activates the stop-start feature more aggressively when rolling at speeds below 14 mph. Audi won’t say how much its 48-volt system contributes to fuel economy and power improvements other that it can save seven-tenths of a liter for every 100 kilometers. In American, that’s one gallon of gas over 336 miles. GM’s latest LaCrosse eAssist increases city and highway fuel economy by 4 mpg versus the standard car, no small figure. Together with a lighter curb weight, the next A8 also should deliver higher EPA figures.

Thankfully, this hybrid setup doesn’t seem to sap any performance required of a $ 90,000-plus sedan. The 48-volt hybrid is slated for all A8 variants, the W-12 included. (That’s in stark contrast to the last A8 hybrid sold in China and Europe, which went front-drive and was saddled with a weak four-cylinder engine.) Future four-cylinder Audi models will use the A8’s hybrid setup on a 12-volt scale, with less impressive coasting and fuel-saving results but a lower manufacturing cost. Eventually, Audi plans to put 48-volt primary systems into every car it makes. Before that happens, secondary 48-volt systems will start running stereos, window heating, and various pumps and compressors as new models and refreshes arrive. The company, however, admits that electronic control units and lights will stick to 12-volt power for “well into the future.”

Perhaps even better than high-speed coasting is an auto stop-start system that relies on the car’s forward cameras and sensors to time engine shutoffs with greater—and possibly safer—precision. How often has a modern car shut off and restarted its engine multiple times in stop-and-go traffic, or shut the engine off in critical situations, like when waiting to make a left turn in busy traffic? The new A8 will be able to recognize traffic lights and take into consideration the car’s surroundings, such as when the driver is coasting to a line of stopped cars at a light that just turned green. If the driver releases the brake while coasting and there is a gap in traffic, the engine fires to life. While stopped, the engine will restart once the car recognizes the car ahead has begun to move. If the A8 driver tailgates, the motor-generator underhood performs subtle regenerative braking.

Audi has shown a number of interesting uses for 48-volt electrical systems. The most exciting of these involve improving performance, such as with an electric supercharger. The company’s latest idea is a bit more mundane, but still intriguing. It involves the use of a 48-volt electrical system and a belt-driven combination alternator and starter that will come standard on the new Audi A8. This system doesn’t improve performance, but it does allow the engine start and stop system to be smarter, faster, smoother, and in-turn, more efficient.
The best way to explain the benefits of the Audi system is by first establishing an issue with conventional start and stop systems. With a conventional system, there is a palpable moment between when the foot comes off the brake pedal, and when the engine starts. This moment is long enough that it could result in, at minimum, annoyance if the engine were shut off while slowing down, but traffic started moving again, and you couldn’t accelerate immediately. At worst, this could result in a somewhat hazardous moment when you don’t have full control of the car’s movement.
The belt-driven alternator and starter on the Audi system can start the engine much faster, and it has sensors that can monitor the car ahead to know whether the engine needs to restart. As a result, it is safe and convenient for the Audi system to shut off the engine as soon as it hits 13 mph while slowing down. This also allows the engine to be shut off for longer than a normal start-stop system would. According to Audi, it’s also fast and smooth enough that the engine can be shut off during coasting for up to 40 seconds between speeds of about 35 and 99 mph.
There’s one other advantage to the way this Audi system is designed. Because the starter capability is included in the belt-driven alternator, it’s hypothetically able to be used on any vehicle with any powertrain, provided there’s a 48V electrical system. It can simply be bolted onto the front of an engine, instead of needing a whole motor sandwiched somewhere between the engine and transmission. So don’t be surprised if you see it show up on other Audis in the near future.
This feature will be standard on all next-generation Audi A8s. The car will be fully revealed on July 11.
