Remember how the ending of Toy Story 3 made you cry until your head hurt? Well, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet! Appearing on the BBC Radio 2 talk show “The Chris Evans Breakfast Show,” Tom Hanks talked a little about the emotional moment he recorded the Toy Story 4 finale. “It was the first time that we were going to be recording the end of the movie, and Toy Story [4] is going to have an impactful ending,” said the actor, who voices Woody in the franchise. Hanks went on to add: “The way you record Toy Story, you’re in a room with the team that has created it. When I went in for my last day of recording, I wanted to have my back to them, because usually, you’re facing him so he can look right up and you can talk about it… But I didn’t want to see them and pretend they couldn’t see me.” Hanks comments compliment those of his co-star Tim Allen, who previously said he had trouble getting through recording the final scene because it was so emotional. In short, prepare to weep again when Toy Story 4 arrives June 21, 2019.
Recently, word came from Fede Alvrez that the script for Labyrinth 2 was written, which lead many to report the script was “complete.” Alvarez has now clarified things, saying that’s not exactly true. “I never said the script is complete,” Alvarez told MovieWeb. “I never believe the script is actually complete. We do have a first version of it, we have a first version that I think is amazing. I’m sure we’ve gotta write more…” Alvarez also added: “It will take some time because that’s not something you rush. It’s been enough years that I think no one should rush that one. We’re gonna try and get it right.” I’m really not sure what to make of this Labyrinth sequel idea in general. How can you make Labyrinth without David Bowie? I guess we’ll find out, sooner or later.
That boy Tommy Cruise is at it again. The actor who insists on doing his own stunts might be taking things even further for Top Gun 2, aka Top Gun: Maverick. This is a rumor for now, because it comes from an anonymous source over at the Daily Mail, but Cruise apparently wants to really fly a fighter jet in the movie – not just pretend. If this is true, we’ll know about it soon, because Cruise is never shy about publicity regarding his crazy-ass stunts. I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if this turned out to be the real deal, though.
Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg have been teasing a sequel to The Adventures of Tintin for years, so forgive me if I have my doubts about this story. But according to Jackson, the long-awaited sequel could start production next year. Per Yahoo, Jackson said he and his team will “possibly even doing mo-cap next year.” I’ll believe it when I see it! I quite enjoyed the first Tintin, and I’d happily watch a sequel – although I’d be more excited if Steven Spielberg were coming back to direct. But the plan was always for Spielberg to direct the first film, and for Jackson to make the follow-up, so we shall see.
The on-again, off-again story of Lethal Weapon 5 appears to be on-again…maybe. Richard Donner has been hoping to reunite Danny Glover and Mel Gibson for yet another entry in the action franchise for some time now, and the project has gone through fits and starts. At one point, Donner said it was a sure thing…then walked it back, saying it might not happen after all. Now, in an interview with Movies In Focus, Donner is once again saying it could happen. According to the filmmaker, he’s hired a writer to turn in a new draft, and if the draft is good, he’ll go from there. I’m not sure anyone even wants a Lethal Weapon 5 at this point, but I could be wrong.
Kevin Smith is rebooting Jay and Silent Bob, somehow, and according to Jason Mewes, production will begin soon. The actor, who plays Jay in the series, told Laugh Spin: “Hopefully, all is going as planned. We have the money. We have location. We have the offers out to people. Kevin and I went to the doctor cuz, you know, you have to get insured and bonded and stuff. We’re in motion to start pre-production January. February we start shooting. So as long as everything stays on track, yes, Jay and Silent Bob reboot will be made and I’m very excited because I definitely would love to do one more Jay and Bob movie before, you know, we get super old and too old to hang out with apes and swing from grappling hooks and all that good stuff. ” Mewes also added that “we were going to do Mallrats 2. We started making plans. We got people going, ‘Hey, we got the money.’ But then Universal owns the rights, and Universal’s like, ‘We’ve never given a title back to anybody. We don’t want to make the movie.’” So don’t expect Mallrats 2 anytime soon.

In comic book movies, dead characters are only dead until they’re needed again. Marvel Studios is no stranger to cinematic resurrections, and now an actor has revealed that a character from the Captain America franchise will make a surprising return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in next year’s Avengers 4. Does this appearance confirm a long-standing theory about what might happen in the superhero sequel?
So which Captain America character are we talking about here? Will Red Skull come back again? How about Arnim Zola, the scientist who “died” but uploaded his consciousness into a computer? Nope. (Well, at least not that we know of.)
Warning: spoilers for Avengers 4 ahead.
On the UFC Unfiltered podcast (via Heroic Hollywood), actor Frank Grillo revealed that his villain character Crossbones will be showing up in Avengers 4:
“[Crossbones] makes an appearance in the next Avengers movie, but it’s a flashback. And I’m allowed to say whatever I want because I’m never doing another Marvel movie…because I’m 117 years old.”

For those who may not recall, Grillo played Brock Rumlow, AKA Crossbones, in Captain America: Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. Crossbones poses as a S.H.I.E.L.D. operative but is actually a double agent working for HYDRA. His body gets burned at the end of Winter Soldier, which causes him to wear a bone-colored mask. In the beginning of Civil War, Crossbones tries to kill himself (and Steve) by detonating an explosive, but Scarlet Witch contains it – until she can’t hold it any longer and the explosion kills Crossbones and destroys a nearby building, setting the main plot in motion.
Grillo seemed pretty casual about revealing that Crossbones’ role in Avengers 4 takes place during a flashback. So either he’s telling the truth, or he’s potentially concealing something that fans have suspected for a long time: that this movie features time travel. We’ve seen set photos of various characters in previous versions of their costumes (specifically Captain America), and considering how the idea of time factored into Infinity War, it makes sense that at least one character might take a whirlwind journey back through the history of the MCU in an attempt to undo Thanos’ devastating snap.
To me, Crossbones is like the Boba Fett of the MCU: he has a cool character design, but he’s kind of a nothing character. I understand that he’s much more of a significant villain for Cap in the comics, but the movies never really gave him the proper breathing room to establish him as a truly worthy opponent. Will his appearance in Avengers 4 retroactively make him a more worthy foe? We’ll find out on May 3, 2019.

Did Chris Evans accidentally spoil Avengers 4 when he recently tweeted about how he was saying goodbye to the character of Captain America? No! Well, at least that’s what he wants us to think. Evans recently appeared at a comic convention in Chicago to clarify his comment and reassure fans that he did not, in fact, ruin anything about the fate of the Star Spangled man with a plan. But maybe, just maybe, Marvel security got to him and are now orchestrating an elaborate cover-up campaign to throw fans off the scent.
Eh, probably not, though. Chances are pretty good that Evans is simply just telling the truth. Keep reading to learn about how he didn’t actually spoil Avengers 4.
The Russos just wrapped production on Avengers 4, but Evans finished his on-set work a few days ago, when he tweeted the following:
Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.
— Chris Evans (@ChrisEvans) October 4, 2018
Frenzied speculation began instantly in fan circles: does this mean that Captain America dies in Avengers 4? Is that why Evans is saying goodbye to the character? Did one of the stars of a franchise really just spoil a huge moment in what is sure to be one of the biggest blockbuster movies in years?
At Chicago’s ACE Comic Con this weekend (via The Hollywood Reporter), Evans provided more context for his tweet:
“I should clarify that, I know I did tweet something that made a lot of people think that it was in some way a spoiler, and I should clarify that, regardless of how Avengers 4 ends, I would’ve tweeted the exact same thing. That last day of filming really was a very emotional day. It was the culmination of almost 10 years of filming and 22 movies, this unbelievable tapestry and you feel a lot more emotions than I think even I thought I’d feel, and I felt it was appropriate to share the gratitude. I know it had a ripple effect, but I am neither confirming or denying anything.”
One could argue that Evans has been in the Marvel game for long enough know that he would never purposefully spoil anything, while another could point to Mark Ruffalo spoiling Avengers: Infinity War as a counterpoint to that argument. But as a counter to that argument, I’d say that it was clear that Ruffalo was just joking around at the time. I should probably just stop arguing with myself – this is exhausting.
The actor went on to say that the year-long wait between movies will be well worth it for audiences:
“It’s never been done before and I don’t know if it will ever be done again and they really stick a flag in the ground on this one and pull out all the stops and you won’t be disappointed.”
Meanwhile, Evans is gearing up to start shooting Rian Johnson’s upcoming murder mystery Knives Out, a film that will see him team up with Daniel Craig, Lakeith Stanfield, and Michael Shannon.

Marvel Studios’ Avengers 4 title has been the subject of intense speculation for months, but this morning, directors Anthony and Joe Russo provided MCU fans with a whole new source of speculation in the form of a new photo with the caption, “Look hard.” Does this photo actually include a subliminal hint at the title of the new Avengers movie, or is it simply a case of the directors trolling everyone? Take a look below and judge for yourselves.
Here’s the photo in question:
Look hard… pic.twitter.com/NxI8RFh4f6
— Russo Brothers (@Russo_Brothers) September 19, 2018
I’ll admit that when I first saw this picture, I zoomed in and scoured the frame in a search for any clue about the upcoming sequel’s title. The brothers have previously said the title should scare Marvel fans, and they mentioned that it would be revealed after people have had time to digest Avengers: Infinity War. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige got even more specific, saying that the title reveal would arrive after the teaser trailer for Captain Marvel. That teaser was unveiled yesterday, and it looks like the Russos wasted no time teasing fans with a potential hint.
So what might be hiding in this image? Perhaps zooming in was the wrong approach. Perhaps taking a step back and looking at the entire image as a tableau is the way to go. It’s hard to ignore the giant ladder in the shape of an “A” over Joe Russo’s shoulder. And if you squint hard enough, you can make out three other As in the image – including one near the top of the frame that resembles the slanted A in the Avengers logo.
Four A's.

That doesn’t really get us anywhere as far as a potential title goes. But another fan has an idea that you won’t be able to unsee once you see it:
— Patrick Smith (@Patrick83Smith) September 19, 2018
He’s suggesting the title is Avengers: Endgame, one of the options that fans seem the most excited about. The problem with this theory – aside from the creation of the “D” and the “G” in this image being a little bit of a stretch – is that the Russos have specifically said that the title of Avengers 4 is not spoken in Infinity War, and as you may recall, Doctor Strange uses the phrase “endgame” in that movie. (Tony Stark asks Strange why he gave the Time Stone to Thanos, and Strange responds, “We’re in the endgame now.”)
Does this mean that the Russos were lying to preserve their secret? It wouldn’t be the first time the director of a major blockbuster lied about their project to surprise audiences. But here’s the thing: the Russos could technically be right, because the phrase “Avengers endgame” never actually is uttered in the movie. It’d be sort of a cheat, but they could truthfully say that they never lied to fans if that title ends up being used.
In previous interviews, Feige has said that the quest to figure out the title has “gotten completely blown out of proportion” and that it “will have no chance” of living up to fan expectations. But over the past decade, he’s figured out how to have fans eating out of the palm of his hand, so this is all part of his grand plan to keep these movies on peoples’ minds during the lead-up to what could be the defining story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Captain…we have a problem.
Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth have both walked away from Star Trek 4 following failed salary negotiations. Pine was going to reprise his role as Captain James T. Kirk for the fourth time. Hemsworth was going to return via time travel as Kirk’s father, who was introduced in the 2009 reboot’s memorable prologue. What happens next, especially since the rest of the cast is still on board, remains uncertain.
The Hollywood Reporter has the story, and it offers up a dark side to a franchise built upon hope and optimism. After all, money doesn’t exist in the utopian world created by Gene Roddenberry over 50 years ago…but it sure as hell exists right here and now, and Pine and Hemsworth felt they weren’t getting enough of it to step aboard the bridge again. Or rather, they felt Paramount was not honoring an existing deal.
According to THR, the actors and their reps “insist they have deals in place and that the studios are reneging on them, forcing them to take pay cuts as they try to budget a movie that is following a mediocre performer.” That mediocre performer is Star Trek Beyond, a very good movie that massively underperformed when it opened in 2016. That film grossed $ 343 million worldwide, but it cost $ 190 million. That’s not a great ratio when other franchise films regularly cross the $ 1 billion mark these days.
Still, it’s hard to blame Pine and Hemsworth for sticking to their guns and walking away if they’re not getting paid what they believe they should be paid. If you want to point fingers at someone, point them at Paramount.
So what does this mean for Star Trek 4? Well, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg and John Cho are all expected to close their deals and return as Uhura, Spock, Dr. McCoy, Scotty, and Sulu, respectively. It’s possible that Kirk and his father could be recast. It’s also possible that Pine and Hemsworth return to the negotiating table and everything gets worked out. It’s also possible that they split the difference – cough up the cash for Pine since he’s the face of the rebooted franchise and recast his dearly departed dad with someone less expensive.
In any case, I’ll just come right out and say it: this flat-out sucks. I’ve been critical of the new Trek movies, but two of them have been winners, overcoming their flaws to reflect what makes this series so damn special. Pine did the impossible – he proved that someone else was capable of filling William Shatner’s boots. And Hemsworth’s entire career was built on his powerful scenes as George Kirk and seeing him return would have been a thrill. Then there’s the rest of the crew, played to perfection by a perfectly cast ensemble who give new life to beloved characters. I’d watch a Star Trek 4 starring everyone but Kirk, but would Paramount even consider making that?
It’s especially a bummer since Star Trek 4 was going to mark the first time a female director was going to steer a Trek movie. What does this mean for S.J. Clarkson? Will she stick around if things have to get retooled?
Anyway, it’s not like this spells the end of Star Trek. The recent series Star Trek: Discovery is returning for its second season next year and there’s a new TV show starring Patrick Stewart, reprising his role as Captain Picard, in the pipeline. And Pine has the Wonder Woman movies and Hemsworth has Thor and the rest of the cast are in high-demand. In the end, nothing and no one is irreparably damaged.
But still, it was a thrill to see Trek back on the big screen ever couple of years. I’ll cross my fingers and hope they can work this one out.

Fans have been eager for any details they can get their hands on when it comes to the developing Lord of the Rings series in the works at Amazon. Now the series finally has a pair of writers on board the project that is being produced in in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema, a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment.
During Amazon’s Television Critics Association 2018 panel, Star Trek 4 and Jungle Cruise writing duo JD Payne and Patrick McKay were announced as the writers of Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series, which will take place before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. Find out more below.
Payne and McKay have been writing partners since meeting on the high school debate team more than two decades ago. In addition to the aforementioned scripts in development, the writers were also behind a 2017 Blacklist drama script called Escape, which is currently set upwith Academy Award-nominated producer Mike DeLuca.
During the Amazon TCA 2018 panel, head of Amazon Studios Jennifer Sake explained the unusual process of finding a show after buying the property:
“We have closed a deal with a writing team, Payne and McKay who come out of the world of Star Trek. It was a very thoughtful process. It’s such a vast world, there are so many different ways to go with that property. Thanks for Sharon Tal Yguado on my team she led the charge bringing in people. We had an abundance of enthusiasm in the creator/ writer arena and a lot of time spent talking about different takes. The next phase is a big development process as they build out this world.”
The Lord of the Rings franchise was so big it necessitated Amazon planting its flag to obtain the rights before any further development. Salke has not ruled out taking that kind of leap for future properties:
“I don’t think there’s a new process underway. For specific creators or big pieces of IP, those conversations can evolve in different ways. Often writers, I’ll sit with creators and talk about areas we’re interested in. Projects may emerge out of that without a formal pitch process. It’s not by design. It’s just part of the organic process dealing with creative partners, especially ones we bring on with deals. Lord Of The Rings is an exception because it’s a big title targeted and won by Amazon before I got there, but I know in the caste of those big event series, we would be competitive out there.”
As for Peter Jackson’s possible involvement in the new Middle-earth project, there hasn’t been an update since June when there were conversations about bringing the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit franchises’ director into the fray. Perhaps we’ll hear more about that as the project gets closer to getting in front of a camera. But with a multi-season commitment for this Lord of the Rings series, we might be waiting awhile for that to happen.
Additional reporting provided by Fred Topel from the Television Critics Association panel.
