Shoes will invariably wear out with enough use, but scientists might have found a way to delay the shopping trip for their replacements. A USC team has created a self-healing 3D-printed rubber that could be ideal for footwear, tires and even soft robotics. The effort involves 3D printing the material with photopolymerization (solidifying a resin with light) while introducing an oxidizer at just the right ratio to add self-healing properties without slowing down the solidifying process.

The result is a rubber that’s highly durable, but can still be made in a reasonable amount of time. An object that takes 20 minutes to make (such as a shoe sole) can survive being cut in half with a few hours of repair time. And the warmer it is, the faster the material heals. In the lab, it took two hours to fix a cut at roughly 140F.

This might not be ready for the real world in the near future. Researchers would still need to find a way to make this available for mass production. And even if it’s ready, it would be important to dial back the hype. This might prevent your shoes from cracking and minimize gouges, but it’s not going to keep your running shoes looking brand new after hundreds of trips to the gym. Nonetheless, it could still represent a breakthrough — and the USC team is working on self-healing properties for harder materials like plastic that could be used in body armor and car parts.

Printable 3D homes represent the latest wave in construction, but they’re not always cheap to build.

Earlier this year, architectural startup Branch Technology developed a prototype of a 1,000-square-foot 3D home that would cost around $ 300,000 — a price that’s too high to be considered a solution to the global housing crisis.

That’s all about to change thanks to a collaboration between New Story, a San Francisco-based housing nonprofit, and ICON, a construction technology company that designs 3D printers. In March, the companies unveiled the first permitted, 3D printed home in America: a 350-square-foot structure that costs around $ 10,000 and took just 48 hours to build.

At the time, the printer — known as the Vulcan — was only running at 25% speed. This gives the companies confidence that they can build a 600- to 800-square-foot home in just 24 hours for a price tag of $ 4,000 or less. Prior to using 3D technology, it took New Story eight months to build 100 homes, which each cost around $ 6,000.

While the initial test run took place in Austin, Texas, the companies plan to produce their first string of homes in El Salvador, a country whose rough terrain and frequent floods have made housing construction incredibly difficult. From there, they hope to provide safe homes to some of the 1.3 billion global citizens who currently reside in slums.

Take a look at their housing model below.

The Vulcan can produce a home seamlessly on-site, without having to piece together individual units.

The printer is designed to be mobile and weighs around 2,000 pounds.

It’s also made to withstand rural weather conditions, meaning it can operate during a power shortage or without access to potable water.

Cody Wilson, the 3D-printed gun rights activist, has a warrant out for his arrest, according to an affidavit partially published Wednesday by an Austin-based reporter, Tony Plohetski.

According to the document, which was also described by KVUE, Wilson is accused of meeting a girl under the age of 17 through a website known as SugarDaddyMeet.com and paying her $ 500 for sex last month in Austin, where Wilson lives.

Wilson allegedly used the username “Sanjuro,” a seeming reference to a 1962 Japanese film directed by Akira Kurosawa. At some point, according to the affidavit, which was described by the Austin American Statesman, Sanjuro identified himself as Cody Wilson and further indicated that he was a “big deal.” Wilson also allegedly exchanged nude photos with the girl.

Judge extends ban on publication of 3D-printed gun designs https://briefnews.eu/judge-extends-ban-on-publication-of-3d-printed-gun-designs/ https://briefnews.eu/judge-extends-ban-on-publication-of-3d-printed-gun-designs/#respond Mon, 27 Aug 2018 18:21:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/judge-extends-ban-on-publication-of-3d-printed-gun-designs/

A federal judge in Seattle issued an injunction today that blocks Defense Distributed from publishing its 3D-printed gun designs online. The move extends a temporary ban issued last month and the injunction will remain in place until a lawsuit brought forth by a number of state attorneys general is resolved. Washington, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Oregon, Maryland and Washington, DC signed onto the suit last month in an effort to reverse a US Department of State settlement that allowed the 3D gun designs to be published online. Eleven additional states joined the lawsuit earlier this month.

The fight to keep these sorts of gun designs off of the web has been going on for some time. Defense Distributed began publishing 3D-printed gun designs back in 2013, but was told to stop by the State Department for being in violation of the International Traffic in Arms Regulations. In 2015, the company then took the matter to court but a Texas district court and a US Court of Appeals both sided with the State Department. However, in a surprising about-face, the US government settled with Defense Distributed earlier this year, agreeing to allow the designs back online.

The attorneys general announced their lawsuit just ahead of when Defense Distributed said it would begin publishing its designs again. Bills have also since been introduced in the House of Representatives and the Senate aimed at blocking the sales. US District Judge Robert Lasnik said in his ruling today that the plaintiffs’ argument that the State Department didn’t follow the correct procedure when making changes to the US Munitions List per its settlement with Defense Distributed has merit.

“Today’s decision is an unqualified success for the American public and, indeed, the global community,” Avery Gardiner, co-president of the Brady Campaign, said in a statement. “3D-printed guns represent a supreme threat to our safety and security, and we are grateful that Judge Lasnik recognized it as such.”

Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson said, “Once again, I’m glad we put a stop to this dangerous policy. But I have to ask a simple question: why is the Trump administration working so hard to allow these untraceable, undetectable 3D-printed guns to be available to domestic abusers, felons and terrorists?”

A lawyer for Defense Distributed told Bloomberg that the firm is reviewing Judge Lasnik’s decision and will consider its options going forward.

Senators want Google and Facebook to block 3D-printed gun files https://briefnews.eu/senators-want-google-and-facebook-to-block-3d-printed-gun-files/ https://briefnews.eu/senators-want-google-and-facebook-to-block-3d-printed-gun-files/#respond Fri, 17 Aug 2018 07:52:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/senators-want-google-and-facebook-to-block-3d-printed-gun-files/

US authorities lost the legal battle that would prevent Defense Distributed from legally releasing its 3D-printed gun files, but social networks can still ban them from their platforms. Facebook is already blocking people from posting their blueprints in the form of Computer Aided Design (CAD) files on its website and on Instagram, and now a group of Senators are asking other tech giants to do the same thing.

In a letter sent to Twitter, Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) are urging the platform to take steps to proactively block or limit people’s access to 3D-printed gun designs. They also sent similar letters to Facebook, Microsoft, Craigslist, Google, Reddit and Yahoo.

The Senators called reports that thousands of CAD files had already been downloaded and can now be freely distributed “deeply troubling.” They said those could put “untraceable and undetectable” deadly weapons in the hands of any person, thereby undermining firearms laws and putting communities at risk.

To back up their argument, the group cited sections from Twitter’s terms of service and rules that allow the company to delete content like 3D-printed gun designs from its website. They pointed out that Twitter says it reserves the right to remove content that violates user agreement, including unlawful conduct, and that it prohibits people from using its platform to further illegal activities. Tweets that “glorify violence” are also against its rules. Most importantly, Twitter says it “prohibits the promotion of weapons and weapon accessories globally.”

After several states sued to block sales of 3D-printed weapon designs online, a Seattle judge granted the temporary restraining order eight state attorney generals and the District of Columbia were seeking. It will only be in effect until the end of August, though, and as the Senators noted, CAD files are already in circulation. It might be up to the tech giants to make sure they’re not so easy to find.

By now, you’ve probably seen all the news regarding Defense Distributed, company founder Cody Wilson, and 3D-printed guns. As of last week, his story has showed up everywhere from The New York Times‘ podcast The Daily to Comedy Central’s The Daily Show. Issues surrounding 3D-printing firearms and firearms parts have recently come up in the Senate and been addressed by White House officials.

For Ars readers, this may feel a bit like déjà vu. We’ve covered Wilson and his company at Ars for over five years now; we’ve met him in Texas and California.

But it’s easy to get lost in all of this new coverage of his saga, so we thought we’d try to help clarify the major details and the current state of it all. Similar to the beginner’s guide to bitcoin we put together at the height of cryptocurrency hype, we’ve gathered the most common questions that come up in comments section or over a cup of coffee. Hopefully, these nine topics can help clear up some confusion regarding this strange intersection of technology and the law.

More states join lawsuit to keep 3D-printed gun plans off the internet https://briefnews.eu/more-states-join-lawsuit-to-keep-3d-printed-gun-plans-off-the-internet/ https://briefnews.eu/more-states-join-lawsuit-to-keep-3d-printed-gun-plans-off-the-internet/#respond Sat, 04 Aug 2018 02:32:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/more-states-join-lawsuit-to-keep-3d-printed-gun-plans-off-the-internet/

On August 1st, Defense Distributed was set to upload designs of 3D-printed guns for the public to buy and download. But the day before, a Seattle judge temporarily blocked their release after seven states and Washington, DC sued the company and State Department. Today, eleven more states have joined the legal battle to stop the firearm plans from being sold online.

According to the filing, amended complaint added California, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia to the list of states Attorneys General opposing the release of the files. Per the Brady Campaign and Center to Prevent Gun Violence, the preliminary injunction hearing has been scheduled for August 21st and the temporary restraining order has been extended until August 28th.

The lawsuit and temporary block are the latest in a years-long battle between the firm Defense Distributed, which started publishing 3D-printable gun designs online in 2013, and opponents in the government and public sector. The State Department initially told the company to stop, as it considered the firearm plans to violate international arms regulations policies. Defense Distributed fired back with a lawsuit in 2015 alleging the files were protected under free speech rights, the case wound its way through the courts.

The Supreme Court declined to hear the case at the beginning of the year, but in a reversal, the Department of Justice chose to settle with the firm in April and let the company publish its designs online. The Brady Center and two other gun control organizations attempted to keep the plans offline, but a federal judge blocked their efforts a week before they were set to go live. Last came the state Attorneys General and the Seattle judge’s blocking order, which has held up their online sale — at least for now.

DEFCAD, the world’s best-known online repository for 3D-printed gun files went dark on Tuesday evening, in the wake of a decision by a federal judge in Seattle, who granted a temporary restraining order hours earlier.

“If an injunction is not issued and the status quo alters at midnight tonight, the proliferation of these firearms will have many of the negative impacts on a state level that the federal government once feared on the international stage,” US District Judge Robert Lasnik wrote in his order.

“Against this hardship is a delay in lifting regulatory restrictions to which Defense Distributed has been subject for over five years: the balance of hardships and the public interest tip sharply in plaintiffs’ favor.”

Defense Distributed, the 3D-printing gun activist group, has secured a settlement with the Department of State that will enable it to legally distribute its CAD files of firearms on its DEFCAD website, putting an end to a years-long lawsuit.

The group says it will resume publication on August 1, 2018, more than four years after its files were first removed.

“It’s just now black letter law that you can traffick in this information,” Cody Wilson, the group’s founder, told Ars, noting that substantially not much will change given that the files have been available on torrent sites for years.

A 3D-printed house you can actually live in should be ready by 2019 https://briefnews.eu/a-3d-printed-house-you-can-actually-live-in-should-be-ready-by-2019/ https://briefnews.eu/a-3d-printed-house-you-can-actually-live-in-should-be-ready-by-2019/#respond Fri, 08 Jun 2018 15:35:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-3d-printed-house-you-can-actually-live-in-should-be-ready-by-2019/

In The Netherlands, a company called Van Wijnen is working with the city of Eindhoven to build the world’s first community of 3D-printed houses. The planned community will have fire houses, all printed with concrete. Each subsequent house will build on the ones that came before; the first house will be relatively simple, just one story. The fifth house will be two stories and incorporate what the team has previously learned.

At the beginning, the houses will be printed offsite and brought to their final location in the Meerhoven district of Eindhoven. The aim is to make the futuristic-looking houses a work of art in and of themselves, so the final community looks like a sort of sculpture garden.

Van Wijnen is embarking on this project for multiple reasons. According to The Guardian, there are a shortage of bricklayers in The Netherlands. The craft is becoming more expensive as a result. In contrast, concrete is relatively in expensive and versatile. What’s more, 3D printing it is economical because none of the material goes to waste, and the method allows printing different types of concrete (reinforced with insulation or coated with dirt repellant) at once. Additionally, it can be easily customized according to the wishes of the person who will live in the home.

The real key here is that these homes aren’t just models; they will actually be lived in. And if this project is successful, more 3D-printed concrete homes will follow. The first home of Project Milestone should be ready sometime in 2019. For now, the homes are being printed offsite, but the company hopes that by the fifth house, the work will be done at the Meerhoven site. And apparently, the waiting list for the first house is already 20 people long, so it’s clear that Van Wijnen won’t have trouble finding someone to rent their 3D printed homes.
