Now that DJI has made its semi-pro drone technology more accessible through the Mavic Air, what’s it going to do for operators who prefer the Mavic Pro line? Check off a few of their bigger wish list items, apparently. DroneDJ has obtained a photo of what looks like a sequel to the Mavic Pro, reportedly just called the Mavic 2. It would still have the signature folding propeller arms, but would include at least side obstacle avoidance cameras, if not rear as well — this could provide 360-degree obstacle avoidance. If you’ve ever crashed your drone into a tree while trying to record a dramatic panning shot, you know how important this could be.
The Mavic 2 might also be helpful for budding aerial cinematographers. The photo appears to show a GoPro Karma-style removable gimbal that would let you swap cameras, with at least two options (notice the smaller black gimbal hiding on the side?) that may include a larger-than-normal sensor. The addition wouldn’t make DJI Inspire buyers sweat, but it could be helpful for drone buyers who’d rather not give up portability for the sake of their shots.
Other possible revelations include
So long as the leak is accurate to begin with, the remaining questions mainly revolve around the launch date and price. DJI was supposed to have a “See the Bigger Picture” event on July 18th, but it postponed that to a later date. You might see the Mavic 2 soon, but not that soon. And whether or not the Mavic 2 would represent a good deal would depend on whether or not the price is comparable to the $ 999 you pay for a Mavic Pro. If there’s a significant price hike, it may be a tougher sell to people who aren’t quite convinced they should pay a premium over the Air.

GUEST: For those of us who live here, it may come as no surprise that Portland, the city of Roses, was recently awarded the top spot on Forbes list of best places for business and careers in 2017. Among the reasons Forbes cited was the Oregon city’s prevalence of tech companies and the jobs they bring taking root here. Portland has indeed bee…Read More

Rylo is one of a handful of 360-degree cameras that only requires an editing suite as big as your smartphone. Much like the cheaper Insta360 One and more expensive GoPro Fusion, Rylo’s companion mobile app lets you play editor and director. Users can set specific focal points or objects for the frame to follow within a 360-video after the fact, before sharing their masterpiece to Instagram or Facebook. With two 208-degree lenses, 4K video resolution and auto-stabilization tech, it’s a pretty neat little camera. Since launching last fall, though, it’s only worked with iPhones and iPads, but today, as promised, Android support has arrived.
It’s not quite that simple, though. While anyone can download the app, not every Android device is equipped to handle 360-degree video. But fret not, for Rylo has published a list of recommended devices with which the camera is fully compatible — pretty much just the latest Samsung Galaxys and Google Pixels. Also noted are a few handsets that are supported but can’t export 360-degree video, and a number of smartphones that simply don’t have the right hardware to play nice with Rylo. The list is relatively short, but you can assume if you have a newish top-tier device running Android 6.0 Marshmallow or later, it’s likely to be compatible.

Other than a different sync cable to get Rylo talking to your Android phone, you get the same camera and accessories in the box for the same $ 499 price. Now all an Android user needs is a life adventurous and exciting enough to justify the purchase.

One of the big steps necessary to roll out self-driving cars is getting the public to trust them, and Waymo’s latest attempt to achieve that is with a new 360-degree experience. Viewable on a computer, your phone or a VR headset, it feeds a simulation of mixed video and sensor data (LiDAR, radar and cameras) from one of the company’s Pacifica Hybrid minivans to give you a feeling of what it “sees” while driving along.
For many people, this is the first time they’ll be able to experience a ride in a self-driving car, and perhaps begin to trust that it’s at least as attentive as human drivers. The Alphabet (and formerly Google) company has big plans to launch a taxi service this year with thousands of these vans, and 360-degree video provides a preview of what it will be like.
After taking five years to accumulate one million miles driven, Waymo says its cars have racked up a million in the last three months (to with 2.7 billion virtual miles last year). That brings their total real-world mileage to five million across 25 test cities, adding as much mileage every day as the average person does in a year. Expect more “public education and awareness” advertising to follow, but for now, just take a peek around as Waymo does the driving.

The popular cross-platform, open-source video player VLC has received a significant update in 3.0, the first in what will be called the Vetinari branch. It adds support for HDR, including both 10-bit and 12-bit color and 360-degree video.
This release version now also fully supports Chromecast streaming, a feature we first played with back in 2016. While VLC is open source, this part of it isn’t; Tom’s Hardware reports that VideoLAN explained it “used Google’s official closed-source SDK to build out the feature, which prevents it from releasing the source.”
Other major added features include 3D audio support, audio passthrough for HD audio codecs, and support for browsing NAS drives. As always, a bunch of new codecs are supported too.

Ever wonder what it would be like to be on the set of a four-camera sitcom? This incredibly unique One Day at a Time featurette gives you pretty much unlimited access.
Intel built a high-tech soundstage in Los Angeles for capturing volumetric video in real-time. More than that, the chipmaker has forged an “exploratory partnership” with Paramount Pictures to see what’s possible with the technology that can capture a scene from pretty much any point of view — even that of a horse during a Wild West shootout.
Paramount’s chairman Jim Gianopolulos said that he thinks filmmakers will adapt to the technology well. The slow-mo panning (think The Matrix‘s bullet-time shots) and perspective-swapping might not have a place in traditional movies, but VR tie-ins could benefit from the data-rich tech.
The chipmaker has spent over a year building out the 25,000 square-foot studio with 10,000 square feet dedicated just for video capture. To house all the data generated from shooting, there are 10 petabytes of local storage. Needless to say, if you’re making 360 degree video, this is where you’ll want to shoot.

Essential has been racing to improve the (frankly lackluster) camera software on its phone ever since launch, and now those upgrades are showering affection on the handset’s signature 360 Camera attachment. Andy Rubin’s outfit is delivering an update that adds streaming live 360-degree video to both Facebook Live and YouTube Live. In other words, that add-on just became much more useful — you can broadcast your adventures in a VR-friendly format just by clipping a camera to your phone.
The addition could make this one of the better bargains for 360-degree livestreaming, at least if you’re looking for a higher-end phone. Now that the price of the Essential Phone itself has dropped to $ 499, you’re looking at less than $ 700 for a complete streaming setup. Is there a huge audience for this? Probably not, but it helps the phone stand out in a field where having an all-screen design is no longer a novelty.

Byond is launching a publishing platform for companies to create augmented reality, virtual reality, and 360-degree applications. It’s one more set of tools designed to get enterprises and brands to take the plunge into promising new technologies.
The Los Angeles-based startup has created the Byond Immersive Suite to make it easier for companies to create, upload, and published immersive content. Byond says that no coding skills are required, and building content can take a matter of minutes. Platform companies such as Apple and Google have launched platforms to support AR, while others are supporting VR. That makes creating cross-platform apps more of a hassle.
Byond has been working on the tech for two years in Los Angeles and Israel, and it has been testing it for six months with brands and media companies. Paying customers include McCann, Coca-Cola, Samsung, HP and Turner. Right now, the company says that creating immersive media requires a lot of skill. Brands and agencies can’t really do the work themselves, so they hire VR and AR studios that specialize in making custom apps. The product is available now.
As part of the Immersive Suite, Byond has created solutions tailored to specific verticals such as consumer engagement for brands, media consumption for publishers, virtual store builder for ecommerce businesses, as well as immersive VR and AR tools for learning, training and development.
“Byond offers a platform as a service to empower brands and agencies to create their own personalized interactive and immersive experiences,” said Eran Galil, founder and chief technology officer of Byond, in a statement. “By using the Byond Immersive Suite, we significantly reduce the complexity of creating, publishing and analyzing new media applications, across all multiple display and interaction devices.”
Byond’s initial closed beta phased reached 300,000 viewers and over 2 million immersive interactions across a multiple industries and platforms. With the release of Byond’s open beta phase, the company plans on scaling up the usage of their immersive reality content creation platform. Byond has 15 employees.

Samsung is showing off a new Samsung Round 360 video camera for virtual reality at its Samsung Developer Conference in San Francisco.
The new camera can capture 4K video in 360 degrees, allowing a viewer to see everywhere at once in either a livestream or recorded video. The Samsung Round 360 has 17 camera lenses, and it will be available in the fourth quarter.
I got a hands-on look at the Samsung Round 360 at the SDC event. The camera’s real-time video output looked great on a Samsung 4K monitor. But it was pretty blurry when I watched it on a Samsung Gear VR headset with a Samsung Galaxy S8 screen.

Samsung Electronics vice president Taeyong Kim also said in a session at the Samsung Developer Conference in San Francisco that the company is also working on a new version of mobile VR technology. That one has six-degrees of freedom for its controller as well as inside-out tracking.
Samsung first shipped its Gear virtual reality headset in 2014. It works with a Samsung mobile phone as its display, and its controller has just three degrees of freedom right now. That limits the input system for the device. With six degrees of freedom, Samsung will be able to add full 3D sensing of where your hands or possibly even fingers are in VR, just like with the more expensive, PC-based Oculus Rift.

The advantage of the Gear VR has been its low price of $ 100 and its wire-free mobility. With improvements in tracking and controller accuracy, mobile VR could be much more appealing, Kim said. Samsung has already shipped millions of Gear VR units, but it hasn’t said how many lately. There are more than 1,000 apps in the Oculus store.
The new mobile VR technology will feature better immersion, and Samsung is working on global partnerships for mobile VR, Kim said.
The Samsung Round VR will be a more expensive solution compared to the consumer-oriented Gear360 VR camera, which costs $ 125. The new camera can capture VR imagery with full 3D audio. It has low-latency for livestreaming, one-step stitching, and simple editing functions. While the Samsung Gear360 camera has only two cameras, the Round VR has 17 and can capture far more data. The Samsung Round 360 doesn’t have a price yet.
Each camera has a 1/2.8-inch, 2 megapixel image sensor and f/1.8 lens. The Samsung Round 360 also has six audio microphones, LAN or USB-C connectivity, 10GB RAM and 40GB of internal storage, with expansion slots for more. It weighs 4.25 pounds.

Samsung posted a 360-degree video of the Coldplay concert in August, and viewership saw a big bump. 360 videos are popular in the music and sports worlds, as they let fans see the view from any seat in a venue, Kim said.
He also said the Samsung VR Cloud Tools for creators will provide analytics for consumers, telling people through heat maps where someone is looking while watching 360 video.
