A co-pilot cheated death when a cockpit window broke and fell out during a flight in China.

The windshield on the right side of the Airbus A319’s cockpit cracked, shattered and fell out mid-air.

The incident occurred when the plane had just reached its cruising altitude of 32,000 feet, about 30 minutes after it had taken off.

The Sichuan Airlines co-pilot, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pulled to safety.

He suffered scratches and a sprained wrist, according to the Civil Aviation Administration, but was otherwise unharmed.

His captain, Captain Liu Chuanjian, performed an emergency landing, making an unscheduled stop in Chengdu.

In the cabin, passengers donned oxygen masks as the plane lurched to the side and meal trays fell to the floor.

Later, the captain spoke to the Chengdu Economic Daily about the ordeal. “There was no warning sign. Suddenly, the windshield just cracked and made a loud bang.

“The next thing I know, my co-pilot had been sucked halfway out of the window,” he revealed.

“Everything in the cockpit was floating in the air. Most of the equipment malfunctioned.

“I couldn’t hear the radio. The plane was shaking so hard I could not read the gauges,” the pilot said, adding that the cockpit’s temperature dropped to minus 40 degrees Celsius.

A passenger described the panic in the cabin to the China News Service. “The crew were serving us breakfast when the aircraft began to shake.

“We didn’t know what was going on and we panicked. Then the oxygen masks dropped. We experienced a few seconds of freefall before it stabilised again.

“I’m still nervous. I don’t dare to take an airplane anymore. But I’m also happy I had a narrow escape.”

A member of the cabin crew was injured in the descent, but no passengers were hurt.

There has been no information given as to what caused the windshield to break off. Sichuan Airlines said the flight had experienced a “mechanical failure” without providing any further details. 

Cracked windscreens are fairly common, caused by birds or lightning strikes, but to have one come off completely is unusual.

In April, a female passenger in the US died when the cabin window next to her shattered.

Closer to home, British passengers feared for their lives when two planes collided at an airport in Turkey.

Passengers on a Turkish Airlines jet panicked when it was clipped by a larger airbus, slicing off its tail.

He said: “The official tax-free Lifetime ISA launch back in April was a damp squib – with very few providers offering it –  and all of them were stocks & shares Lifetime ISAs, unsuitable for many looking to buy their first time home relatively soon.  Yet now things have changed.”

Martin spoke to Phil and Holly to explain exactly what a Lifetime ISA actually is.

The ISA is a tax-free savings product that allows savers to put up to £4000 a year in it. Martin had five pointers to share.

He said: “One – you get a 25 per cent bonus on everything you put in. For every pound you contribute in a year, the state will add 25 per cent, until you’re 50. So, if you save £1,000 you’ll have £1,250, and if you save the full £4,000, you’ll have £5,000.

“Two – it’s for first-time buyers, as long as you’ve never owned or part owned a home (in any way) you can use the money as a deposit towards any residential property that costs up to £450,000.

“Three – It is also for retirement savings. The money and bonus can be taken out once you hit 60.

“Four – there’ll be a penalty if you withdraw cash for anything else. You can withdraw the money for anything else whenever you want, but after April 2018, withdrawals have a 25 per cent penalty (remember you’ve already been given a 25 per cent bonus).

“The maths works out that for every £100 you put in, you get £94 back, so only put in money you know you’ll use for home buying or retirement.

“Five – you must be aged between 18 and 40 to open it. If you’ve had your 40th birthday already, you’ve missed out, but open it before you’re 40 and you can keep it after.

“The bonuses are then paid until you’re 50. So open at 18 and get the full 32 years of the maximum bonus and that’s £32,000 free (assuming the rules don’t change).”

Not every provider is offering the Lifetime ISA, and in fact only Skipton Building Society has a savings Lifetime ISA (rather than a stocks and shares Lifetime ISA).

Lifetime ISAs are a no-brainer for first-time buyers

Martin explained why he is so passionate about the Lifetime ISA and opening it now, and said: “Lifetime ISAs are a no-brainer for first-time buyers. Yet there’s a rule that says to use the bonus for a home, you need to have had it open for at least a year (if you’re buying more quickly or are over 40 check out Help to Buy ISAs which are similar though you can put less in).

“Of course if you’ve cash to save then fill your boots, but even if not, putting £1 in there now gets the clock ticking on that year, so that if and when you do have money to put in it, and want to buy a house quickly, you’re ready to go.

However, Martin advised a pension is still better for most people as a retirement savings plan.

He said: “While unlike pensions it does allow early withdrawals (for a penalty) in most cases a pension gives you more  This is because with a pension, you usually save from gross (pre-tax) income – which for basic-rate taxpayers is a bit like a 25 per cent boost in its own right, the same as a Lifetime ISA. For higher-rate taxpayers it’s like a 66 per cent boost, which smashes the Lifetime ISA.”

“Plus, if you’re employed, the auto-enrolment scheme means that if you save into your pension then your employer has to as well, which you don’t get from the Lifetime ISA. 

“So in simple terms the only time the Lifetime ISA even matches pensions is for basic-rate taxpayers who are self-employed.

“Even then, the Lifetime ISA, unlike a pension, counts as savings, so it can diminish your benefit entitlement. Therefore, for most people the Lifetime ISA should only be used at best as a secondary way to save for retirement.”

Discussing the ISA, Martin said: “The launch yesterday of the new LISA (Lifetime ISA) looks like a bit of a damp squib, with only a few providers offering them. Yet don’t ignore it. After all, £1,000 of annual free cash is not to be sneezed at – and for first-time buyers, delay could cost.

“The LISA is a tax-free wrapper that lets you put up to £4,000 in it every year as cash savings paying interest, or stocks & shares giving investment growth (or loss).

“You have to be at least 18 but under 40 to open one. So those pushing 40 need to be speedy, eg, if you turn 40 on Friday, open it today. If you’re too old to open one, Help to Buy ISAs – while you can put less in – also have a 25 per cent bonus and don’t have an upper age limit. For (grand)parents wanting to help their (grand)kids buy a home, giving them cash to put in a LISA is a great way to do it.

“You get a 25 per cent bonus on everything you put in. For every pound you contribute, the state adds 25 per cent each year, until you’re 50. So if you save the maximum £4,000 a year, you get £1,000 added. Someone starting at 18 maxing it annually could get £32,000 added (if the system doesn’t change).

“It’s a NO-BRAINER for almost every 1st-time buyer. Once you’ve held a LISA for 12 months, the money and bonus can be used by first-time buyers towards the home and mortgage deposits for any residential property costing up to £450,000. Two first-timers buying together can get a LISA each, effectively doubling the bonus. A first-timer buying with a non-first-timer can still get one and the bonus.

“It can be used for later life saving too – but be careful. You also get the bonus if LISA money is taken out once you’re 60+. You can even use a LISA first to buy a home, then keep it open and pay in to it for retirement. Yet unless you’re self-employed and a basic-rate taxpayer, saving in a pension rather than a LISA’s likely to be more lucrative.

“After the 1st year, other withdrawals have a penalty. You can withdraw money from a LISA whenever you want, penalty-free, until 5 April 2018 (though you’ll need to close it). After, unless it’s for a qualifying first-time property, you’ve hit 60 (or have a terminal illness/die) there’s a 25% penalty taken off withdrawals. The net effect is you lose roughly £6 per £100 you put in (do it on a calculator if you don’t believe me). So only put money in you’re sure will be used for one of the two intended purposes.

“Wannabe 1st-time buyer? Even if you’ve no savings, open a LISA with the minimum ASAP to start the clock. You must have a LISA open for a year to be able to get the first-time-buyer bonus and use it for a property. So even if you open one this week, you’ll be waiting until April 2018 before you can buy and get the bonus. So open a LISA now with the bare minimum (can be £1) just to get the clock ticking, in case you want to add to it later.

“Those with a Help to Buy ISA should definitely do this (you can have both; you just can’t get the bonus on both). If you find you won’t use your Help to Buy ISA this year, you can transfer it into a LISA with no issue before 5 April 2018.

“So far only four providers, all stocks & shares firms, say they’ll offer LISAs from today. Not too helpful, as most first-time buyers want to save in cash as they’re only putting money away for a short time – though Skipton Building Society has said it’ll launch a cash LISA in June.”

Martin also had other deals to share, including a whopping 40 per cent off at La Redoute.

He revealed: “Go online to big French online department store La Redoute and enter the code BIG40 and you’ll be able to get 40 per cent off everything (even sale items which are already up to 50 per cent off), including many big brand clothes, shoes, furniture and more until 11.59pm on Thursday (13 April).

“Examples include women’s Levi’s jeans for £51 from £85, Converse ‘All-Star’ white trainers for £35 from £59 and men’s Nike trainers for £54 from £90. Though of course it’s stock dependent. Delivery is £3.99 or you can pick up from a collection point for free.”

Martin advised those who bank with Barclays they are entitled to a free £55 a year. He said: “If you bank with Barclays sign up to its Blue Rewards scheme, and you can gain an extra £55 in your first year. It’s available to new and existing current account customers who bank online or via its app, and it’ll give you at least a £7 reward each month (and double that in the first month if you sign up by 30 April) – or more if you’ve a mortgage, home insurance or personal loan with it. There’s a £3/mth fee for the account, so after that you’re £4/mth better off or £48/year (£55 if you sign up now).”

Finally, Martin shared a McDonald’s hack that allows you to get a Big Mac and fries for £1.99.

He said: “Buy anything from McDonald’s (cheapest item is an ice cream cone at 69p) and at the top of your receipt there is a code you can input in the Food for Thoughts website, where you give feedback in a survey. That gives you a number you can put on your receipt which works as a voucher for a £1.99 Big Mac and fries (normally £4ish). And as you then get a receipt with the Big Mac & fries you can do it again (and again) until the survey ends. Do be eat aware though.”
