The Chagas disease, which used to be contained in Central and South America (infecting at least eight million people) has reached the US, infecting hundreds of thousands across 27 states. It is also becoming more common in Spain, Italy, France, Switzerland, the UK, Australia and Japan.
A statement from the American Heart Association (AHA), aimed at increasing global awareness among physicians, warns that US doctors need to learn to recognize and treat Chagas before a devastating outbreak occurs.
“Early detection of Chagas disease is critical, allowing prompt initiation of therapy when the evidence for cure is strong,” wrote Caryn Bern, professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California in San Francisco, in the online statement.
Doctors can detect the disease through a simple blood test and, if caught early, it can be treated by medication. “If untreated, infection is lifelong and can be life-threatening,” the CDC warns.
The Chagas disease is caused by a parasite transmitted by a blood-sucking insect called triatomine, known as the “kissing bug,” because it tends to bite people’s faces near their mouth and can cause strokes and heart failure. About 30 percent of infected people can develop life-threatening complications, including chronic heart disease.
The bug then spreads the parasite, known as Trypanosoma cruzi (T cruzi), by defecating near the bite, which the victims can then unwittingly move into the open wound, or their eyes or mouth.
The disease has been labelled a silent killer because 70 percent of people don’t develop any signs of infection. Symptoms can include fever, lethargy, aches, rashes and swollen glands.

A woman who for years went by the name “Bitcoin Maven” on localbitcoins.com—a peer-to-peer website for buying and selling anonymous bitcoins in-person—was sentenced Monday to 366 days in federal prison, three years of supervised release, and a $ 20,000 fine.
While selling bitcoins is not inherently illegal, doing so in such large volumes without keeping extensive records to mitigate money laundering is.
Federal prosecutors in Los Angeles called the case against Theresa Lynn Tetley—a 50-year-old former stockbroker who bought and sold several million dollars worth of bitcoins—the first of its kind in the region.

Volkswagen has taken parking lots to a whole new level in the United States and will not be emptying them soon.
Volkswagen AG has paid more than $ 7.4 billion to buy back about 350,000 U.S. diesel vehicles through mid-February, a recent court filing shows. The German automaker has been storing hundreds of thousands of vehicles around the United States for months.
Volkswagen has 37 secure storage facilities around the United States housing nearly 300,000 vehicles, the filing from the program’s independent administrator said. The lots include a shuttered suburban Detroit football stadium, a former Minnesota paper mill and a sun-bleached desert graveyard near Victorville, California.
VW spokeswoman Jeannine Ginivan said in a statement on Wednesday that the storage facility in Victorville, California, is one of many “to ensure the responsible storage of vehicles that are bought back under the terms of the Volkswagen” diesel settlements.
“These vehicles are being stored on an interim basis and routinely maintained in a manner to ensure their long-term operability and quality, so that they may be returned to commerce or exported once U.S. regulators approve appropriate emissions modifications,” she said.
In total, VW has agreed to spend more than $ 25 billion in the United States for claims from owners, environmental regulators, states and dealers and offered to buy back about 500,000 polluting U.S. vehicles. The buy backs will continue through the end of 2019.
The court filing said through Dec. 31 Volkswagen had reacquired 335,000 diesel vehicles, resold 13,000 and destroyed about 28,000 vehicles. As of the end of last year, VW was storing 294,000 vehicles around the country.
VW must buy back or fix 85 percent of the vehicles involved by June 2019 or face higher payments for emissions.
The company said in February it has repaired or fixed nearly 83 percent of covered vehicles and expects to soon hit the requirement.
Through mid-February VW has issued 437,273 letters offering nearly $ 8 billion in compensation and buybacks.
In April 2017 Volkswagen was sentenced to three years probation after pleading guilty to three felony counts and paid $ 4.3 billion in federal penalties. The automaker in September 2015 admitted to circumventing the emissions control system in U.S. diesel vehicles for vehicles sold since 2009, prompting the resignation of the company’s chief executive.

Instagram quietly blocked access to the Botanical Garden’s page in Moscow, leaving its administration puzzled over the fate of its main social media platform with more than 297,000 followers.
Russia’s media watchdog has demanded an explanation.
“A catastrophe, friends!” is how the Botanical Garden’s press office sounded the news Thursday after its account was blocked without any explanation from the social network.
Moscow State University’s Botanical Garden page is said to be “the most popular account among those of other botanical gardens in the world and all of Russia’s landmark attractions with more than 297,000 followers,” the statement said.
The head of the Garden, Aleksey Reteyum, called the move “a flagrant outrage,” saying, the entire administration is “in shock.” Apart from scientific and educational work, the Botanical Gardens has turned into “an important cultural center of Moscow social life, with numerous exhibitions, concerts and master classes,” Reteyum said, highlighting that it is a noncommercial entity. “Our Instagram informs our visitors of all that, and its blocking is critical, literally fatal for [the] garden’s existence!”
While the Garden’s administration fears its appeals to the Instagram support team have been in vain, Russia’s media watchdog, Roskomnadzor, requested an explanation from the corporation. “Dear @instagram, would you be so kind to explain the reasons of blocking the account?” it wrote in a tweet.

Nestled in between residential buildings and office blocks, the Botanical Gardens is a popular sanctum, with locals enjoying an island of greenery and a quiet haven in the heart of the inner city north of Moscow. The green oasis welcomes some 7,500 visitors over a weekend, offering year-round exhibitions in its greenhouses and gardens.

One incredibly lucky guest brought in some film memorabilia which certainly caught the eye of the BBC team.
The granddad showed off his props that he took upon himself to rescue from a skip after their films were finished.
A Darth Vader helmet from Star Wars was priced at £200,000 while the axe from The Shining fetched £50,000
To finish off, a medallion from the Indiana Jones series bagged an incredible £60,000.
With a total of £300,000 potentially coming his way, the grandfather took his moment to pass it on to his grandson in front of the wide-mouthed audience members.
Viewers of the BBC show completely lost it and flocked to Twitter to discuss the amazing scenes.
One wrote: “Possibly the most valuable antique ever on the show, brought in by a normal person, dates back to 1976.”
A second added: “The Axe from the Shining, the pendant from Raiders of the lost Ark and Darth Vader’s mask from Star Wars, wow what a collection to save from the skip, now worth £250-350k.”
A third was stunned, commenting: “I’m still in shock from the estimate of that stuff the Grandad brought in.”
Antiques Roadshow continues next Sunday on BBC One at 8pm.

Republicans keep pushing forward with their massive tax plan.
The House passed its version of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act two weeks after coming out with their proposal in November. The Senate, meanwhile, pushed its version through just after 2 a.m. ET on December 2.
Both plans are being billed as a boon for America’s middle class by Republicans and the White House. But many have pointed out that a number of changes in both the House and Senate’s versions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act give a few boosts to the wealthiest in the country.
We were curious to see how the proposed changes to the tax brackets and the proposed eliminations of many itemized deductions might change the amount of taxes owed by wealthy Americans, so we ran the numbers ourselves.
READ MORE: Here’s what Trump’s tax plan means if you’re making $ 25,000, $ 75,000, or $ 175,000 a year
First up, here’s how tax reform would affect a single, childless taxpayer earning $ 300,000 a year:

For our calculations, we assumed each theoretical taxpayer would itemize deductions and not be subject to the Alternative Minimum Tax. (More on why we made these assumptions below.)
Most Americans will see a slight increase in their take-home pay under the current proposals. But all of that may change as many provisions are set to expire. Some analysts have said that nearly half of Americans would see a tax increase if that happens.
Exactly how much taxpayers will save if Republicans succeed in overhauling the US tax code will depend on many factors.
It’s noteworthy that even just from the changes to the tax brackets and the eliminations of deductions, very wealthy households, including President Donald Trump, stand to benefit handsomely from the plan. But, in our estimates, those making around $ 200,000 to $ 500,000 would benefit less so from the proposed changes to the tax brackets and deductions.
Calculating taxes is complicated.
And it gets even more complex the higher your household income becomes. High earners may make money in ways that go beyond a traditional salary, such as through investment returns or real estate income.
The eligibility to claim different deductions also varies from person to person. (We know, because we tried a bunch of combinations while calculating these examples.) So, we tried to use only the deductions that the vast majority of people under a given income bracket actually use, according to the most recent IRS data.
We focused specifically on the potential changes to the amount of taxes owed by different income groups if the proposed changes to the tax brackets and the proposed elimination of deductions were to go into effect.
To put together the charts, we made the following assumptions to capture what would happen to a “typical” individual earning $ 300,000, $ 500,000, $ 1 million, or $ 10 million:
Just in case all of that above doesn’t make it clear, this article is not a comprehensive list of what will happen to your taxes if you earn an income of $ 300,000, $ 500,000, $ 1 million, or $ 10 million. Contact your tax adviser for advice catered to your specific situation.

BARRANQUITAS, Puerto Rico (Reuters) – While his competitors wait for diesel to restart generators knocked out by Hurricane Maria, flower grower Hector Santiago is already back in business because of solar panels powering his 40-acre (16.2-hectare) nursery in central Puerto Rico.
The U.S. territory is in a near blackout, its electricity grid shredded by the storm that slammed into the island on Sept 20. But Santiago’s decorative plant and poinsettia nursery, set amid the jagged peaks of the Barranquitas farming area, has kept working thanks to the $ 300,000 he invested in 244 solar panels six years ago.
“Everybody told me I was crazy because it was so expensive. Now I have power and they don’t,” said Santiago, whose flowers are sold in Puerto Rico, at outlets like Costco, and throughout the Caribbean.
While Santiago’s nursery was considerably damaged during the storm, many plants were destroyed and the roofs of some greenhouses blew off, he was able to regroup quickly, with electricity to keep pumping water from his two wells.
On Tuesday, as U.S. President Donald Trump surveyed damage elsewhere on Puerto Rico, some of the nursery’s 19 employees were busy repotting damaged plants and cleaning up.

Santiago’s experience has left him hoping that Puerto Rico will begin relying more on solar power and other renewable energy as it looks to fix its damaged grid. That view has gained traction among some Puerto Rican politicians, though it is probably unlikely in the short run given the need to restore power as quickly as possible.
The experience of people like Santiago could drive more individuals and businesses to invest in solar power. Henry Pichardo, who runs a solar installation firm in the city of Bayamon, thinks the storm could drive up his business 20 percent a year. He said he has been inundated with enquiries since the hurricane hit.
“People are going to become more conscious of how they are living, and invest more in solar,” he said.
Santiago’s business requires a high amount of energy. From May through August, he lights his greenhouses with a total of 2,520 electric bulbs from 10 pm to 2 am to stimulate plant growth.
Until Maria, Santiago sold excess electricity generated by his six by three foot wide panels back to Puerto Rico’s now-defunct grid. In the storm, however, 25 percent of the panels were damaged by flying debris.
Still, he said, that was enough to keep the power on, and the nursery did not “have to worry about trees falling on the power lines.”

Micah Jones and his wife Elaine bought a plot with half an acre of land in County Down for £80,000, demolishing several old agricultural buildings which sat on the land.
With a budget of £200,000, the couple planned to build a home inspired by the farm buildings from Mr Jones’ childhood.
But they soon ran out of money, spending over £50,000 on a unique timber structure from Austria and £17,000 on windows.
Speaking to Kevin about what inspired the design of the home, Mr Jones revealed he nicknamed his childhood home ‘Shedland’.
He said: “We have to be sophisticated about the design, it is essentially a big empty shed to live in.”
Grand Designs watched as the couple spent half of their budget in just three weeks – despite having a one year schedule for the build.
So the couple, who have three children, were forced to take on most of the interior and decor work themselves in a bid to save money.
Micah said: “Sometimes when I come down to do the stone work I think it’s impossible, this is a life’s work as opposed to a few months.”
Eventually, the couple had to borrow another £25,000 from their bank to ensure they could complete the property.
The family were living in a caravan on site during the build, but soon began to tire of this and pushed to get their home finished.
Their dream became a reality just nine months after they started, and the family moved in to the property in February this year.
The massive four-bedroom home contains a massive open-plan first floor featuring a kitchen, study and sitting room.
The latest episode of Grand Designs comes as Kevin McCloud revealed just what it would take to put him off buying a house.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, the TV presenter and designer admitted what would put him off – and there was one non-negotiable for him when house-hunting.
He revealed: “I can’t believe there is a house anywhere on the planet without some redeeming feature.
“Leaky pipes, a roof that is falling in, whatever it is, it doesn’t matter – you can do it up.”
Professional athletes will go through a lot to stay in shape.
For aging athletes, spending money on health and wellness is an investment that can help add years to a lucrative career and each year could be worth millions more in income.
No player better embodies this idea than 39-year-old Steelers linebacker James Harrison.
According to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Harrison spends $ 300,000 a year just to keep his body in top form.
While younger players may get by with a personal chef and a quality home gym, Harrison, pushing 40, goes the extra mile when it comes to taking care of his body. Not only does Harrison see experts in acupuncture, chiropractic, and cupping, he even flies them out as needed.
As the report states:
For his muscles to handle the lifting sessions and the NFL grind, Harrison says he needs an acupuncturist, a dry needlist, three massage therapists, two chiropractors and “a person who does cupping.”
But Harrison, 39, doesn’t surf the net and read reviews like the rest of us. He goes underground for the most exclusive specialists.
“The people I use right now, you can’t find none of them on Google,” Harrison said.
That’s where the $ 300,000 comes into play. Once he heard about these elite technicians and tried their services, he had to put them on the payroll. They are based in different parts of the country, including California and New York, so he pays their airfare and expenses to get them to town when he needs them.
According to Harrison, he sees each person at least once a week.
It’s something of an arduous process, especially when you consider that Harrison goes through the trouble of booking the flights on his own, and he has spent well over $ 1 million investing in his health. But as the report notes, that’s a solid investment for a player that has made close to $ 70 million over the course of an extended career.
Regardless of what you think of Harrison’s busy routine, there’s no denying its results — this fall will mark Harrison’s 15th season with the Steelers, and he just signed a two-year extension back in March to keep him wearing black and yellow until he’s at least 41.
As Harrison puts it, “When it comes down to it, what I make versus what I spend, the payout is worth it based on how I feel.”

The Internet Bug Bounty (IBB), a not-for-profit bug bounty program backed by such tech companies as Facebook and Microsoft, revealed that it has received three $ 100,000 donations from Facebook, an existing donor, and new investors GitHub and the Ford Foundation.
Founded in 2013, the IBB provides financial incentives to security researchers and “white hat hackers” to identify weaknesses in core internet infrastructure and open source software such as Ruby, PHP, Python, and OpenSSL. The organization is managed by a panel of volunteers from across the security realm, including employees from Uber, Microsoft, Facebook, Adobe, and fellow bug bounty body HackerOne.
Facebook has sponsored the IBB since its inception, so it’s perhaps no surprise to see the social networking giant participate in additional funding, but code-hosting repository GitHub and the billion-dollar Ford Foundation are notable additions to the IBB’s squadron of backers.
“Open source software underpins the backbone of the internet and society’s most critical digital infrastructure,” explained Shawn Davenport, VP of security at GitHub. “We believe deeply in the importance of this initiative, and we’re excited to sponsor the Internet Bug Bounty and support the people who work tirelessly everyday to ensure the internet is as safe and secure as it can possibly be.”
Today’s news comes a day after The Tor Project launched its first ever public bug bounty program through HackerOne. This followed the involvement of many other well-known companies, including Twitter, which paid out more than $ 300,000 in prizes between 2014 and 2016, as well as Airbnb, Uber, Yelp, and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).
“When we have the means to reward altruistic hackers for uncovering critical vulnerabilities in public domains, we are making the internet a safer place for everyone,” added Alex Rice, HackerOne CTO and founder, who serves on the IBB’s panel.
The IBB said that since its launch it has awarded more than $ 600,000 in bounties to hackers, covering 625 vulnerabilities.
