  • There's been an uptick in retail investors checking into gambling treatment centers.
  • Treatment can be limited, as clinicians often don't understand the condition or the stock market.
  • That's left some addicted traders discouraged – and sometimes diving back into the market.

Matt Widmann, a 35-year-old commercial fisherman from Alaska, knew that he had a problem when he was spending more time trading stocks than with his family. He would trade for around seven hours a day, starting at the crack of dawn and ending mid-afternoon, usually too worn out from the rollercoaster of wins and losses to spend time with anyone.

Then, this past February, he hit a breaking point. Widmann says he traded some same-day expiration contracts, and wound up losing nearly his entire portfolio – around $ 30,000 in life savings, split among shares of Nvidia, Tesla, and other stocks popular with retail traders.

"I was a mess. I was just in tears on the couch. I was like, I don't wanna live anymore," he told Insider.

Now five months "sober" from the stock market, Widmann realizes he's part of a greater wave of retail traders who developed a problem akin to gambling addiction over the two years of the pandemic market's wild ride.

But help is expensive, limited, and oftentimes, led by clinicians who don't know much about the stock market themselves. That's leaving some addicted traders feeling discouraged – and sometimes, diving back into the stock market after treatment.

Help can be hard to come by

There is no official diagnostic criteria for day-trading addiction.

Experts say that lack of classification is one of the biggest barriers for retail traders like Widmann who are seeking help. Lacking specific criteria for their condition, they turn to gambling addiction treatment centers, which have seen an influx of day traders.

"I view [day trading] as gambling," Dr. Timothy Fong, the co-director of UCLA's Gambling Studies program, told Insider. "I've had a lot of patients where I say to them, 'You've developed harmful consequences because of your behavior related to finances. So for insurance purposes, I'm letting you know, I'm putting this as a gambling disorder diagnosis.' Because there is no financial trading disorder, right? We don't have that at all."

A spokesperson for Gamblers' Anonymous New York told Insider that the organization has seen around a 15% increase in the past year from day traders who have called to ask for help, and in the past two years, Fong estimates that his program at UCLA has seen about a sixfold increase in day traders who have called, up from five a month to about one per day.

For those looking for it, help doesn't come cheap. Algamus, one of the oldest gambling rehabilitation centers in the country, offers an inpatient program that costs $ 16,000, near the low end for such programs. Similar treatment can cost $ 5,000-$ 45,000, according to Algamus' founder, Rick Benson, and most insurance providers refuse to cover treatment if gambling disorder is the primary diagnosis.

On top of the costs, Fong believes there are limitations to how much gambling treatment centers might help day traders, since those programs aren't specialized for people who are addicted to the stock market.

"We think that the same principles that work for gambling…for machines and poker, sports betting, craps, things like that, should work for a financial trading addiction. But you can't just automatically assume that," Fong said.

He also noted that therapists are often unfamiliar with the stock market themselves, limiting the support they can offer.

"A lot of times when I ask patients, I don't understand what they're trading. I don't understand the mechanism of where the money went," he admitted.

Widmann says the therapist he saw was only able to provide mood support.

"I don't think that they actually understood specifically what was going on with me," he said. "They understood, 'okay, you're having some financial depression, you're like having some sort of compulsory behavior,' but I don't think they understood the intricate nature of [retail trading], to be involved in something that both professionals engage with and is rife with degenerates."

That contrasts with the sense of community to be found online, in places like the popular Wall Street Bets forum, where traders share a self-deprecating but mutual understanding of the highs and lows of investing. Widmann believes that's part of the problem, and recalled the pressure to trade created by these forums and the thrill of being in a Discord chat with fellow traders communicating in real time.

"It grew to be so compulsory because… you're in this group of people, and you want to be a part of what they're doing."

Diving back in

Even now, Widmann isn't certain he's out for good.

"It's definitely crossed my mind again where it's like, if I get a big enough position, maybe I'll dabble in it again. So I can't say that it's a hard no." Widmann said.

That desire to dive back into the market even after treatment poses one of the biggest challenges for providers in the field, Fong said, and Algamus' Benson added that it's one of the main differences between day traders and gamblers.

"[A day trader] may live in the delusion that he's really just investing," Benson said.

He says one of the clinic's biggest challenges is convincing traders that they were not "professional investors," Benson said, and showing patients that their "bad investment year" is actually something pathological. That involves a mix of gambling education, individual therapy, and group therapy, which he says is particularly important.

"Gamblers are terrific liars and bullshitters. Whereas in group therapy, the group works against that," Benson said.

Dan Field, a gambling therapist who is creating a treatment program specifically for day trading addiction, speculates it has to do with a discomfort in accepting reality.

"They have that itch to get the money back and they think this is just a temporary pit stop," he told Insider. "So I try to speak to them as a counselor and as a friend. I care about you and this is why I'm giving you this hard advice: you have to sit with these losses for now," he tells his patients.

On Thursday, Wolfgang Hatz, former engine chief for Volkswagen and Audi and later the head of research and development at Porsche, was arrested in Munich. With Hatz’s arrest, the slow-moving investigations of Volkswagen Group in the aftermath of the 2015 emissions scandal seem to be gathering momentum, according to reports from German paper Süddeutsche Zeitung and the New York Times.

The news comes by way of anonymous sources, as German privacy law prohibits the government from disclosing the identities of suspects. German authorities confirmed to the New York Times that a suspect was arraigned on Thursday morning in connection with the ongoing investigation of VW Group’s Audi unit.

Hatz was the engine chief at Audi between 2001 and 2007, right around the time that the company began implementing a software-based “acoustic condition” workaround for its diesel engines. According to court filings and academic research, Audi allegedly wanted to get rid of the rattling noise that some diesel engines make on startup, so it created software to inject extra fuel into the engine on ignition. The company then worked to mask the extra emissions created by this fix, and from there, the emissions cheating software apparently grew as the company demanded different and increasingly hard-to-achieve features for its diesel engines. There’s evidence that the Audi software was then borrowed by Volkswagen for its line of diesels, which were aggressively marketed as “clean diesel cars” in the US.

Putin & Merkel to talk Syria, Ukraine as German leader visits Russia after 2-year absence https://briefnews.eu/putin-merkel-to-talk-syria-ukraine-as-german-leader-visits-russia-after-2-year-absence/ https://briefnews.eu/putin-merkel-to-talk-syria-ukraine-as-german-leader-visits-russia-after-2-year-absence/#respond Tue, 02 May 2017 10:13:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/putin-merkel-to-talk-syria-ukraine-as-german-leader-visits-russia-after-2-year-absence/

Russian President Vladimir Putin is to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday to discuss key international issues such as the Syrian conflict, the situation in Ukraine and battling terrorism, as well as bilateral ties between Moscow and Berlin.

The pair is scheduled to hold two rounds of talks in the Black Sea resort of Sochi. They will also discuss economic cooperation and joint projects.

“The two leaders will discuss the current state and prospects of bilateral relations, including energy, trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian cooperation,” a Kremlin statement reads.

“They also plan to address key international problems, including the fight against terrorism, the situation in the Middle East and the implementation of the Minsk Agreements on the Ukrainian crisis settlement.”

Putin and Merkel will also talk about the forthcoming G20 summit, which will be held in Hamburg in July.

The timing of the visit is significant, as it comes just ahead of the Victory Day celebrations in Russia on May 9, as well as before parliamentary election in Germany scheduled for September, a senior lecturer from the Russian State University for the Humanities, Vadim Trukhachev, told RT.

“Merkel has complicated relations with Bavarian leader Horst Seehofer, who visited Moscow in March. To gain his support, she had to make some concessions. One of them is mending relations with Russia to a certain degree,” Trukhachev believes.

The visit before Victory Day commemoration may indicate the peaceful intentions from Merkel, he added, stating that “many Germans dislike that Germany gives in to [pressure from] the US too much.”

The last time Merkel visited Russia was on May 10, 2015, in connection with the Victory Day celebrations.

Catalan ex-president given 2-year public office ban for independence referendum https://briefnews.eu/catalan-ex-president-given-2-year-public-office-ban-for-independence-referendum/ https://briefnews.eu/catalan-ex-president-given-2-year-public-office-ban-for-independence-referendum/#respond Mon, 13 Mar 2017 17:32:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/catalan-ex-president-given-2-year-public-office-ban-for-independence-referendum/ The former president of the Spanish region of Catalonia, Artur Mas, was barred from public office for two years on Monday for staging an informal referendum on secession from Spain back in 2014.

Mas, whose official position was president of the Generalitat of Catalonia, was in charge of Spain’s wealthiest region in 2010-16. He has now been was found guilty of “disobedience” by the Catalonian Superior Court of Justice and fined €36,500 (US$ 39,000).

His closest associates in staging the plebiscite, former Catalan Vice-President Joana Ortega and former Education Minister Irene Rigau, received 21-month and 18-month bans from public office respectively.

The prosecutors were pushing for a 10-year disqualification for Mas and nine-year bans for the two ministers.

During the trial, the Catalan ex-leader claimed that by staging the vote on November 9, 2014, he had “no intention of committing any crime or of disobeying anyone.”

“Our aim was to rise to the challenge and promote participation by all possible means,” he said in February.

He also wondered why the Spanish Constitutional Court stopped short of preventing the plebiscite “if this was so obvious that it’s a crime.”

The independence referendum was staged in Catalonia despite the Constitution Court having ruled it illegal five days earlier.

Back then, 80 percent of the voters supported independence from Madrid, with less than half of the region’s 5.4 million population taking part in the referendum.

Large-scale protests took place in the Catalan capital, Barcelona, during the court proceedings, with tens of thousands taking to the streets to support the ex-president and again demand independence.

Monday’s verdict is likely to widen the split between Madrid and Catalonia’s current pro-independence president, Carles Puigdemont , who took the reins after Mas stepped down last year.

Catalan parliament speaker Carme Forcadell decried the court ruling, tweeting: “All my support to Mas, Ortega and Rigau following this unfair sentence. Democracy should be exercised, not banned.”

Puigdemont’s government is planning to hold another independence referendum in September, which would be binding this time.

The new Catalan vote was again outlawed by the Spanish Constitutional Court. However, the pro-independence parties argue that Catalonia, which has its own language and culture, is better off on its own due to contributing much more to Spain than it actually receives in return.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has stated on numerous occasions that the independence referendum would be a breach of the constitution.

According to media reports, the government in Madrid is even considering stripping Catalonia of what regional autonomy it has, in order to prevent its possible secession.

Nova Scotia back in the Brier after 2-year absence https://briefnews.eu/nova-scotia-back-in-the-brier-after-2-year-absence/ https://briefnews.eu/nova-scotia-back-in-the-brier-after-2-year-absence/#respond Sun, 05 Mar 2017 09:40:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nova-scotia-back-in-the-brier-after-2-year-absence/

ST JOHN’S — Curling fans from Nova Scotia have reason to cheer again during the men’s curling championship.

After being eliminated in the previous two Brier pre-qualifier events, the team out of the Halifax Curling Club earned its way into the championship after defeating Yukon Saturday afternoon in St. John’s.

“It feels great,” said Nova Scotia skip Jamie Murphy. “I feel for those guys though because we went through that last year and I know it’s not going to be easy for them.”

Murphy’s rink lost the Brier pre-qualifying final one year ago to the Northwest Territories. They weren’t going to be denied this year though. After going unbeaten during the round robin part of the pre-qualifying event, Nova Scotia then cruised to an easy 9-6 victory over the Yukon.

“Our goal was getting through and now we can start playing our first game I guess,” said Murphy.

This is the last year for the pre-qualifying format. Next year’s Brier will feature 16 teams.

“We didn’t like when that format came about,” Murphy said. “I don’t know if they’ve switched to the right solution.”

Long road back to the Brier for Nova Scotia

Murphy is the last skip to have thrown a rock for Nova Scotia at the yearly men’s curling championship. That appearance came back in 2014 in Kamloops, B.C. It was a championship to forget for Murphy and his crew who ended up losing every single game.

Now with the bonspiel on the East Coast of Canada Murphy says he’s hoping it translates to some Nova Scotia love.

“Being an East-Coaster we’re going to feel that energy too,” said Murphy. “We feel a lot of support out there. The roars have been great from the fans who want us back in this thing.”

Fatigue a factor

Nova Scotia has already played four more games than the rest of the field. The team was back on the ice for its first game in the Brier less than two hours after making it into the event. Murphy knows that could be a factor.

“It’s going to be difficult. I’m not quite in as good of shape as some of these other guys here,” Murphy said. “It’s going to be a long week but I’d rather it be that way than not.”

Nova Scotia hasn’t won a Brier championship since 2004 when the team skipped by Mark Dacey beat Alberta’s Randy Ferbey in Saskatoon.

Murphy wants to change that, now a part of the 12-team field all vying for this year’s men’s Canadian curling title.

“We play this game for a few different reasons than what the top teams do,” Murphy said. “Just to be here and be part of the event is a pretty cool feeling. The energy is unreal.”

The championship game will be played at the Mile One Centre in St. John’s on Sunday, Mar. 13.
