‘Westworld’ Season 2’s Secret Title Could Be a Major Plot Hint https://briefnews.eu/westworld-season-2s-secret-title-could-be-a-major-plot-hint/ https://briefnews.eu/westworld-season-2s-secret-title-could-be-a-major-plot-hint/#respond Mon, 19 Mar 2018 20:53:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/westworld-season-2s-secret-title-could-be-a-major-plot-hint/ westworld season 2 plot

We may have just gotten a head start at unraveling the mystery of the Westworld season 2 plot.

Plot details have understandably been scarce for the HBO science-fiction series, with showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy attempting to maintain the veil of mystery that has surrounded the show since its first season. But in a new interview, Nolan and Joy may have just given us our first major hint for season 2.

The best way to describe Westworld is as a season-long puzzle. The first season was an intriguing, metatextual piece of fiction that became the lightning rod for all sorts of online theories and fan forums. However, many of its mysteries were solved long before the shocking season finale rolled around.

But as the season 2 premiere draws ever closer, we know even less about the show’s plot details than ever. Until now.

Nolan and Joy have been playing the long game with Westworld, meticulously plotting each season of the series. To aid them in their planning, they have taken to naming each season with a “secret title.” And Nolan accidentally let slip the team’s secret title for Westworld season 2 in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Nolan said:

“If the first season was a journey inward, this is a journey outward. This is a search for what is else is beyond the park, and what else is in the park. Are there more parks? How big is the park? What’s beyond the park? We think of our seasons as discrete components in the series, to the point where we’ve named our seasons. The first season was called ‘The Maze.’ The second season is called ‘The Door.’”

Immediately, Nolan’s writing partner Joy excaimed, “I can’t believe he just told you that!”

Well, this is a juicy hint at the potential plot of season 2. First, let’s talk about the season 1 title, “The Maze.” It’s pretty clear why this was chosen as the title for the first season, as the Man in Black’s (Ed Harris) entire subplot revolved around finding a mysterious maze at the center of the park. However, the maze ended up being a tad metaphorical: it was a mental labyrinth created by the robots’ human creators to help unlock their past. At the center of the maze was true consciousness.

So we can assume “The Door” operates on a similar metaphysical level. Doors lead to somewhere, and it’s obvious that the robots are heading to revolution. Will they escape the park they inhabit and head into the real world for the first time? Or will we see the parks spill into each other, as we get introduced to other parks like ShogunWorld?

We’ll find out in the season 2 premiere of Westworld on April 22, 2018.

In its first development roadmap update of 2018, Destiny developer Bungie is promising to rebalance Destiny 2‘s microtransaction and raids systems to give players more satisfying rewards that are less dependent on luck.

In the lengthy development update posted Thursday evening, Game Director Christopher Barrett admitted up front that, currently, “the scales are tipped too far towards Tess,” the owner of the game’s much maligned microtransaction-fueled Eververse store. The Eververse was “never intended to be a substitute for end game content and rewards,” Barrett writes.

To that end, Barrett says the game will be shifting the item balance so desirable items like Ghosts, Sparrows, and ships can be earned directly as “activity rewards” for in-game actions rather than as random drops from Bright Engrams. Barrett also promises more “direct purchase options” and adjustments that will “allow players to get the items they want more often” without relying on the luck of the draw. These changes should start rolling out February 13.

From the Power Glove to Fallout 4‘s real-life Pip Boy, gamers have been pitched a lot of ridiculous hardware over the years. The Destiny 2 Ghost Alexa speaker and accompanying Alexa skill are no less ridiculous.

The skill, which also works on other Alexa-enabled speakers, allows Destiny 2 players to ask questions like, “Who are the Red Legion,” or “What should I do next?” and get answers back in the same voice they hear in the game. Amazon and game publisher Activision claim there are more than 1,000 lines to hear. Listed functions include telling you more about the game’s lore, identifying your next activity, changing your equipped gear, or inviting other players to group with you. As far as we’re aware, it’s the first Alexa skill to connect directly into an online game.

When Ars’ Sam Machkovech tried the skill out, he wasn’t impressed. For example, many query responses just cycle through several pre-canned messages, and the only gear management command that he discovered was, “Alexa, ask Ghost to equip my best weapon.” It’s entirely a gimmick, but would you have expected anything better? Also, sadly for those (very, very) few of us who preferred Peter Dinklage’s performance as Ghost over Nolan North’s, only North’s voice is available. Most players will be quite happy to see Dinklage is not involved, though.

‘Stranger Things’ Bits: The Return of Kali, Season 2’s Scientific Error, Fan Art, and More https://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-bits-the-return-of-kali-season-2s-scientific-error-fan-art-and-more/ https://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-bits-the-return-of-kali-season-2s-scientific-error-fan-art-and-more/#respond Fri, 24 Nov 2017 20:32:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-bits-the-return-of-kali-season-2s-scientific-error-fan-art-and-more/ Stranger Things Bits JKGM

In this edition of Stranger Things Bits:

  • David Harbour talks about one of Jim Hopper’s smallest character details
  • Joe Keery and Gaten Matarazzo answer the web’s most-searched questions about the show
  • An update on how many people have purchased Dustin’s brontosaurus sweatshirt
  • Find out how the show screwed up one of its scientific references
  • The Duffer Brothers tease the return of yet another character for season 3
  • Even more cool fan art
  • And more!

Here’s Joe Keery (Steve Harrington) and Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin Henderson) answering the web’s most-searched Stranger Things questions. These guys work so well together, and even in a goofy video like this, you can tell there’s genuine affection between them.

We’ve covered Butcher Billy’s fan art book covers in a previous Stranger Things Bits, but he’s also created some Atari video game covers for each episode of season two. The ones seen above are my favorites.

strangerthings_1

Remember Dustin’s purple brontosaurus sweatshirt from the second season? Of course you do. It’s a retro hoodie that The Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul (the organization emblazoned on the front of the sweatshirt) used to sell in the ’80s, and with the popularity of Stranger Things, they ramped up sales again to give fans a chance to buy their own. io9 reports that 18,000 sweatshirts were sold in the first day, totaling an impressive $ 600,000 for the non-profit organization. Very cool.

ST H 2

Actor David Harbour, who plays Chief Jim Hopper, spoke with Business Insider about a tiny detail you may not have noticed: how the character is always wearing his daughter’s hair tie as a bracelet. We’ve already written a full piece about this, but here’s Harbour in his own words:

“It’s something subtle we do, and in fact if you watch the first [scene] of Jim Hopper in Season 1, he wakes up in the morning and before he even checks his watch he touches that bracelet on his arm. It’s the first thing that he does every morning because he never wants to forget her. Sara and the death of his daughter is his grounding place for reality. You’ll see in the first flashback with Sara that she has her hair up in these little pigtails and she’s wearing these blue hair ties. And then when you see me with her in the hospital after she’s going through chemo, and we’ve shaved her head, he’s wearing it on his right wrist when he’s reading to her.

So it’s this bracelet that was her hair tie, and he wanted to wear it since she couldn’t wear it in her hair anymore — it was a little thing between them. And then it becomes a thing that’s like a security blanket for him, it’s a reminder for him. And you’ll notice throughout the series I will occasionally play with it like when I’m talking to Eleven or going through a difficult time.”

And here’s a tease for what that could mean in season three:

“At the end of the [season] you’ll see that Jim is not wearing it anymore, but I don’t want to to get too into that because that’s something we may talk about sometime in season three,” Harbour said. “It’s something we’ll delve more into in terms of Jim’s daughter and him confronting this Eleven relationship and what that means … there’s more to be revealed there.”

Google to help developers build automated driving modes by opening the API behind Pixel 2’s Do-Not-Disturb https://briefnews.eu/google-to-help-developers-build-automated-driving-modes-by-opening-the-api-behind-pixel-2s-do-not-disturb/ https://briefnews.eu/google-to-help-developers-build-automated-driving-modes-by-opening-the-api-behind-pixel-2s-do-not-disturb/#respond Fri, 10 Nov 2017 10:51:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/google-to-help-developers-build-automated-driving-modes-by-opening-the-api-behind-pixel-2s-do-not-disturb/

When Google unveiled its new Pixel 2 flagship phone lineup last month, the company also revealed a neat new feature for drivers.

In a nutshell, the Pixel 2 is capable of switching into do-not-disturb mode automatically when it detects that the user is driving, similar to a feature Apple introduced with its latest iOS refresh.

Once the feature is enabled in the settings, the phone uses multiple signals from sensors, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi to establish that the person is likely behind the wheel of a car — for example, if you’re connected to a car’s entertainment system, there is a high likelihood that you’re driving. Based on this information, the phone silences all incoming messages and notifications, while keeping core voice-compatible features such as calls and navigation cues intact.

Above: Do-not-disturb

Google has offered the Activity Recognition API to third-party developers for several years already, enabling them to build applications that need to know what activity a user is currently engaged in, be it running, walking, cycling or, indeed, driving. But next year, Google said that it will offer a new Activity Recognition Transition API — the same one that powers the Do-Not-Disturb feature on the Pixel 2 phones.

The company hasn’t yet detailed the full capabilities of the API, but it does hope that it will enable developers to “build distraction-free driving experiences,” according to a blog post on the matter.

Many apps offer driving modes. Indeed, Spotify is currently in the process of testing a new driver-focused feature that makes the track-skip buttons larger and opens up a microphone for voice-powered music requests. If Spotify was to launch this feature, and integrate Google’s Activity Recognition Transition API, this could help users shift effortlessly from walking along the street listening to tunes to driving along the highway listening to the same tunes, without having to manually configure anything in the app.

Similarly, dashboard cam apps, for example, could perhaps be configured to activate / deactivate recording without any manual intervention.

Last year, Google launched its Awareness APIs, which use multiple data points — including location, weather, and activity — to help developers build intelligent apps that can figure out what the user is currently doing. With the upcoming Activity Recognition Transition API, it’s clearer than ever that Google is going all-in on its efforts to bring true contextual awareness to machines.

The Pixel 2’s custom camera SoC uses Intel technology https://briefnews.eu/the-pixel-2s-custom-camera-soc-uses-intel-technology/ https://briefnews.eu/the-pixel-2s-custom-camera-soc-uses-intel-technology/#respond Thu, 26 Oct 2017 11:09:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-pixel-2s-custom-camera-soc-uses-intel-technology/

Google’s Pixel 2 smartphone doesn’t just have one of the best smartphone cameras ever; it also has custom silicon dedicated to the camera that isn’t even active yet. Besides the Snapdragon 835, the Pixel 2 has a whole other SoC for image processing called the “Pixel Visual Core.” The chip represents Google’s first-ever consumer SoC, but Google didn’t build the chip on its own. CNBC found out the chip was a collaboration between Intel and Google.

CNBC made the connection after seeing that the serial number of the chip starts with “SR3,” which is also used on some Intel chips. The outlet ran its scoop by Google, which confirmed Intel was involved.

Knowing that Intel helped with the development of the chip was enough information to start digging with, since anything touched by Intel is probably related to the camera chip, right? This led me to the codeword “Easel,” which, sure enough, seems to be Google’s codename for the Pixel Visual Core. You can poke around platform/hardware/google/easel/ in the Android source, where you’ll find the few bits of related code that are currently public. Opening up the device-tree blob binary present on the Pixel 2 also prominently shows the word “Monette Hill,” which sounds like some kind of Intel codename.
