Day One

Caleb George / Unsplash

8 a.m. — I invited a new coworker with me to grab a coffee from one of my favorite places close to my office. It was great to start a Friday with conversation and an almond latte. Our office services coffee and lattes, but I enjoy going out for coffee a few times a week. $ 6

12 p.m. — Walk over to a specialty market that has a great salad bar. We typically have a lot of leftovers in our office throughout the week so I can usually count on food, but nothing healthy was left today. $ 10

6:30 p.m. — I do a quick workout and run over to my favorite poke place to grab a bowl before seeing a movie. Tuna poke bowls are one of my favorite to-go dinners, but the price adds up after I add seaweed salad and avocado. I recently moved to the Bay Area, and I spent my first few weeks her checking out poke bowl places (there are a lot). $ 12

7:30 p.m. — “I, Tonya” was an interesting movie but I wouldn’t see it again. When I told my mom I went, she said she wouldn’t see it either because she “lived through it.” After the movie, I decided to join the theater’s movie club. My friends back home make fun of me, but it is a great deal: $ 8/month for one movie per month. (Tickets are otherwise $ 15!) You also get additional tickets for $ 8. $ 15

Daily Total: $ 43

Day Two

9:30 a.m. — Heading into San Francisco (approximately 30 miles — about an hour — from me in Silicon Valley). I fill up my tank before driving. I am meeting a friend to go biking today, and it looks like a beautiful day so far! $ 40

10:30 a.m. — Parking is a disaster where my friend lives. I think I circled the block by her place four or five times before giving up and just driving farther away to find a spot. I walk toward what I think is her street, but realize I’m not by her place at all. I give in, call a Lyft, and pick her up so we can go to Neiman Marcus in Union Square. My friend and I both use Rent the Runway Unlimited’s subscription service (and RTR is located on the top floor of Neiman). Since I’ve moved, I have significantly fewer social and work events to go to, so I generally use it for getting nice work clothes or when I travel. $ 10

12:30 p.m. — My friend pays for a Lyft over to the Marina/Wharf area where we are picking up rental bikes. We end up grabbing a late lunch at Buena Vista, the home of the original Irish coffee! We share a table with a couple and end up in conversation. One half of the couple is moving here from Seattle in a few months, and she is in town trying to figure out what neighborhood she wants to live in. We have fun exchanging moving to the Bay Area stories. $ 25

2 p.m. — Bike pickup! Our plan is to ride over the bridge and take the Sausalito ferry back. (Our bike rental includes the ferry fare.) We conquer the last hill before the bridge and think we’re in the clear for a nice, non-hilly experience the rest of the way — wrong. There aren’t any hills but it is crazy windy! We make it over the bridge after what seems like the longest, coldest, most difficult ride ever, thankful to leave that behind us. The views are great but it is an experience I’m happy to have completed once and not repeat. We bike down to beautiful Sausalito, which is so charming, and find a little market for coffee to warm up. After, we get to the line for the ferry, and it is so insanely long that we decide to take a cab back. We share the car with another couple visiting from Germany, and my friend covers the cost of the car since she’ll get a credit for the ferry tickets, and I covered the Lyft earlier.  $ 40

6 p.m. — The car drops us off about a block away from the bike return and we enjoy a last, short ride through the crab-smelling wharf. The return goes great, and I call a Lyft to take us to dinner. My friend is doing a January cleanse — no alcohol, dairy, or gluten — and being the good friend that I am, I pick one of my favorite restaurants, Delarosa, which has amazing pizzas and salads. Friend gets mussels and a salad, and we essentially share a table (divided with a small decoration) with two guys visiting on break from college. They are 18, and my friend gives them suggestions for places young’uns can visit. We finish dinner and I pay; my friend pays me her half on Venmo. We take a Lyft line to my car, and I drop off my friend at her house. I head back to the South Bay and immediately pass out when I get home. $ 45

Daily Total: $ 160

Day Three

HBO

6 a.m. — I’m an early riser on every day of the week. I wake up, make myself a coffee, and go back to bed.

4 p.m. — After what feels like the laziest day, full of binge-watching Divorce, I make it to my gym’s Sunday afternoon yoga class. It’s definitely not the best yoga class, and it drives me crazy when people show up late. But I enjoy the stretching and time for mental clarity — and that the class is included in my membership! 6 p.m. — Quick trip to Sprouts, which I’ve recently discovered. I have been a loyal Whole Foods shopper but their parking situation is ridiculous, and it’s never difficult to park at Sprouts (and it’s closer to my house). I grab a few things for the week and am in and out rather efficiently. $ 24

Daily Total: $ 24

Hope Hicks is Trump’s next communications director: Here’s how a 28-year-old with no political experience got into his inner circle https://briefnews.eu/hope-hicks-is-trumps-next-communications-director-heres-how-a-28-year-old-with-no-political-experience-got-into-his-inner-circle/ https://briefnews.eu/hope-hicks-is-trumps-next-communications-director-heres-how-a-28-year-old-with-no-political-experience-got-into-his-inner-circle/#respond Wed, 16 Aug 2017 15:45:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hope-hicks-is-trumps-next-communications-director-heres-how-a-28-year-old-with-no-political-experience-got-into-his-inner-circle/ hope hicksChip Somodevilla/Getty Images

Hope Hicks, 28, may be named President Donald Trump’s White House communications director shortly. But before joining Trump’s campaign, she had no political experience.

Hicks was born in Greenwich, a town of 60,000 on the southwest tip of Connecticut that’s a favorite spot for hedge-fund headquarters.

She was a model, actress, and lacrosse player as a child, before getting her English degree at Southern Methodist University.

Hicks didn’t intend on playing such a large role in a presidential campaign, instead falling into the gig through a job at the Trump Organization.

But she now finds herself as one of Trump’s youngest advisers, serving as his new interim communications director in the White House.

And Hicks has been with Trump — to use his words — “from the beginning.” She stuck on his campaign through several staff revamps, including two high-profile changes at the campaign-chair position.

Here’s what we know about Hicks.

Hicks and her sister, Mary Grace, were successful teen models. Hicks posed for Ralph Lauren and appeared on the cover of “It Girl,” a spin-off of the best-selling “Gossip Girl” book and TV series.

Hicks’ first brush with the Trumps came in 2012 when she was at the public-relations firm Hiltzik Strategies working on Ivanka Trump’s fashion line. Trump’s eldest daughter hired Hicks away in 2014 and she became an employee of the Trump Organization.

Hicks met patriarch Trump and quickly “earned his trust,” Ivanka Trump told The New York Times for a June 2016 profile on the spokeswoman.

The 28-Year-Old Physicist Looking to Revamp India’s Education System https://briefnews.eu/the-28-year-old-physicist-looking-to-revamp-indias-education-system/ https://briefnews.eu/the-28-year-old-physicist-looking-to-revamp-indias-education-system/#respond Thu, 10 Aug 2017 07:30:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-28-year-old-physicist-looking-to-revamp-indias-education-system/ Karan Jani’s obsession with black holes sparked when he picked up a secondhand copy of Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time. Three years later, he found himself having lunch with the famed physicist at the Black Hole Bistro at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Canada, where Jani was a research fellow. I caught up with the laid-back 28-year-old on a recent Saturday, connecting via Skype from his parents’ home in Vadodara, a city in the state of Gujarat, India. A newly minted Ph.D. graduate from Georgia Tech, Jani was home for a break, he says, putting air quotes around “break” since he’d had hardly any time to himself or with his family. Instead, he’d been giving back-to-back lectures at colleges around the country, talking to students about careers in science.

In 2015, Jani was a key member of the team at LIGO — Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory — that was the first to discover gravitational waves (cosmic ripples in the space-time fabric), proving that Einstein was right about relativity. As a regular kid from a middle-class family in western India, Jani is the epitome of “small-town boy makes it big.” But in a country where science education is mostly about memorizing formulas and definitions and earning the highest marks, Karan Janis are rare — and he’s determined to change that.

We [India] could go to Mars, but that still doesn’t trickle down to education.

Karan Jani

At LIGO, Jani explains that his role “was to look for black holes 50 to 1,000 times the size of the sun,” which create gravitational waves when they collide. Turns out two such black holes collided nearly 1.3 billion years ago — just in time for the resulting ripples to reach the earth in September 2015 when Jani and his colleagues were studying them. The discovery grabbed headlines, Jani received the Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked to meet him, and Forbes named him to its 2017 list of the 30 most influential scientists under 30.

Just 10 years ago though, Jani, a freshman at a small college in Gujarat, was on the verge of flunking his exams. Growing up in Vadodara, he wasn’t a particularly good student. “I would look at the night sky and wonder, why are all those stars there?” he recalls. This and other abstract questions would bug him all day and keep him up at night. By the middle of that terrible year in Gujarat, Jani knew he wanted something different: a formal training in astronomy.

Karan Jani

But he couldn’t find the astronomy courses he was after in India, so he enrolled at Penn State University, double majoring in physics and astronomy and minoring in mathematics. Dr. Ravi Kumar Kopparapu, who supervised Jani as a research assistant, remembers him as a curious, bright-eyed kid. “He never hesitated to ask questions and was always looking for something new to do in his field,” he says. Roughly 80 percent of PSU’s astronomy majors drop out; Jani was one of just four candidates to graduate.

After graduation, his budding interest in gravitational waves led him to LIGO-India — a proposal to build the world’s third gravitational-waves observatory in India that had been mired in bureaucracy for years due to lack of funding. It was 2011, Jani says, when proving the existence of these cosmic ripples was like searching for aliens. “But [a career in] science is like golf,” he adds — there’s only so much you can control. So Jani took a chance.

Which led to his blockbuster discovery and a meeting with India’s prime minister, who urged the astrophysicist to share his story with local students. But early into his tour of universities, he was hit by a discouraging realization: “We [India] could go to Mars, but that still doesn’t trickle down to education.” On one end are ”exam toppers,” kids who ace their college-entrance examsand get photographed by local newspapers, and on the other, millions of students warehoused in smaller colleges who receive neither career guidance nor proper practical training. This dichotomy, says Jani, “disturbed and engaged” him.

The entrance exam system — a Hunger Games–like race for admission to India’s top colleges — troubles Jani. “I learned physics by being wrong 100 times and taking the time to figure out why I was wrong each time,” he says. By contrast, a system structured on memorizing tips and tricks to guess the right answer in under a minute makes no sense to him — and undermines meaningful learning.

Dr. Dheeraj Sanghi, a professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kanpur, agrees that the entrance exam system puts an outsize emphasis on marks. But getting rid of it isn’t so simple, he says. “The alternative would be a more subjective evaluation, but in India, that is likely to be politicized and influenced by bribes,” he says. The other challenge in making the process more subjective is that it would make the institutes more vulnerable to lawsuits from people challenging their assessment, he says. One innovative idea is what the Indian Institute of Information Technology in Delhi follows, where, in addition to exam scores, extracurricular activities carry weight. “For instance, if you have a high chess rating or if you’ve represented your state in a sport at the national level, you’ll get a certain number of bonus marks,” he says.

Still, getting the best science education means getting into the top institutes like the 16 IITs. Seats are few; competition is cutthroat. But Jani thinks the solution might be to decentralize India’s education system. “Analyze each state’s needs and create research centers geared toward innovation in those states,” he says. Gujarat, for example, wouldn’t necessarily have a physics institute, but it would have a seed technology research center to support innovations in agriculture, a vital industry in that state. This is now the question keeping the stargazer up at night.

28-year-old Italian swimmer pulls off white-knuckle comeback at World Championships to hand Katie Ledecky her first international individual loss https://briefnews.eu/28-year-old-italian-swimmer-pulls-off-white-knuckle-comeback-at-world-championships-to-hand-katie-ledecky-her-first-international-individual-loss/ https://briefnews.eu/28-year-old-italian-swimmer-pulls-off-white-knuckle-comeback-at-world-championships-to-hand-katie-ledecky-her-first-international-individual-loss/#respond Wed, 26 Jul 2017 17:27:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/28-year-old-italian-swimmer-pulls-off-white-knuckle-comeback-at-world-championships-to-hand-katie-ledecky-her-first-international-individual-loss/ federica pellegriniClive Rose/Getty

Katie Ledecky suffered her first individual loss at a major international meet on Wednesday at the hands of Italy’s Federica Pellegrini.

Ledecky entered the 200-meter freestyle final as the favorite, as she had won 13 of 13 finals in this event during international competitions in her career.

In the first 100 meters of the final, Australia’s Emma McKeon raced out to the lead, followed by Ledecky. However, as she is wont to do, in the third and fourth laps, Ledecky began surging ahead, gaining momentum as the race went on.

In the last 50 meters, it appeared as though the winner would be Ledecky or McKeon, when suddenly, Pellegrini came out of nowhere in lane six.

Over the final 25 meters, Pellegrini looked well behind, and the announcers were solely focused on Ledecky and McKeon.

However, when Pellegrini pulled even with Ledecky and McKeon, the announcers lost it. “Pellegrini’s coming!” shouted Rowdy Gaines.

Finally, Pellegrini out-touched Ledecky and McKeon with a time of 1:54.73. McKeon and Ledecky tied for silver at 1:55.18.

Afterward, Pellegrini, who is the world-record holder in the event, let out an animated celebration.

Surprisingly, Pellegrini’s finishing time was actually .04 seconds slower than Ledecky’s winning time in the semifinals. Ledecky said after the race that she didn’t feel like herself and was “scrambling” later on.

Is This 28-Year-Old Hungary's Next Great Hope? https://briefnews.eu/is-this-28-year-old-hungarys-next-great-hope/ https://briefnews.eu/is-this-28-year-old-hungarys-next-great-hope/#respond Sun, 25 Jun 2017 05:21:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/is-this-28-year-old-hungarys-next-great-hope/ The basement is filled with tables, mismatched chairs and a worn sofa. This former hair salon near Budapest’s main train station lacks flair, except for the fact that it’s now home to Hungary’s Momentum Party, led by 28-year-old András Fekete-Győr.

“We still work to make it cozier, but it looks promising,” he says as we settle into chairs. The same could be said about this slim lawyer with piercing eyes. Since last fall, when Momentum challenged the country’s powerful prime minister, Viktor Orbán, Fekete-Győr has been one of the most buzzed-about politicians in Hungary. The group amassed more than 250,000 signatures for a referendum opposing Orbán’s flagship project to host the 2024 Olympic Games in Budapest, citing prohibitively high costs. And the government ultimately withdrew its Olympic bid, in large part due to Momentum’s campaign. “Momentum smartly linked general dissatisfaction with the government with this single issue, fueling anti-Orbán sentiments,” says Szőnyi Szilárd, deputy editor-in-chief ofHeti Válasz weekly.

András Fekete-Győr

“Enthusiasm, activism, belief,” Fekete-Győr says, are the factors that most contributed to his party’s success. On May 1, Momentum mobilized 10,000 people who took to the streets to protest Hungary’s rapprochement with Russia. And they’ve set their sights on getting elected to parliament in 2018 — ambitious for a political party with some thousand members that raises money from crowdfunding and membership fees. But what they lack in cash and infrastructure they make up for in untapped resources.“For years, the younger generation kept silent or moved abroad,” Fekete-Győr says. “It’s high time to wake them up.”

He accuses Fidesz and Orbán of pulling the country backward by spreading corruption [and] making backroom deals with Russia.

He’s passionate, eloquent and, according to some, reminiscent of a young Orbán. Momentum, like Fidesz — the right-wing party Orbán launched in 1988 as a liberal youth movement — was founded by a group of friends in their mid-20s. Zsuzsanna Szelényi, a member of the Hungarian parliament, belonged to the first generation of Fidesz activists and watched Orbán mature from a liberal democrat into a populist. Is Fekete-Győr anything like him? Both are effective speakers, she says, “but Orbán, even as a youngster, was a revolutionary. András seems to be far more moderate and sophisticated.”

Fekete-Győr and Orbán, 54, both graduated from Bibó István College at Budapest’s Eötvös Loránd University, and they share a passion for football. “But he’s a striker and I’m a midfielder,” says Fekete-Győr. “This tells a lot about our thinking about politics.”

Yet another parallel: Momentum has been campaigning with the slogan Orbán used 30 years ago: a call to “change the system.” Fekete-Győr accuses Fidesz and Orbán of pulling the country backward by spreading corruption, making backroom deals with Russia and using the media to spout propaganda. “They revolted against communism, but they didn’t know any other life than under communism,” says Fekete-Győr.

Raised in Budapestby outspoken anticommunists, Fekete-Győr learned from a young age that Fidesz was the only hope for Hungary. He even voted for them in 2010, and then disillusionment set in. When he rebelled against Fidesz, it wasn’t easy for his parents to accept (his dad was a longtime employee of the National Deposit Insurance Fund of Hungary).

Anti soros campaign in budapest

According to Fekete-Győr, politics played a minor role in his rebellion. “It was love,” he explains. As a law student, he attended a legal competitionin Hong Kong, where he fell for a Muslim girl from Singapore. “At home, I learned about hierarchy and order. She told me about mutual respect and cooperation. She opened my eyes.” He began to question his home country’s political system while gaining perspective from studying in Paris and working in Berlin as an assistant to Hans-Peter Friedrich, a long-serving member of the Bundestag.

Yet Fekete-Győr adheres to a surprisingly rightist agenda on immigration, insisting “every nation has its right to protect borders and say we want no migrants.” Sound Orbánish? Perhaps, but Momentum’s platform also promotes progressive taxation, supports gay marriage, is unambiguously pro-EU and promises to restore constitutional checks and balances. “We’re neither right nor left,” Fekete-Győr maintains. “Our policy is based on issues, not ideology.”

Demonstration at the liberty square 3

Such platitudes tend to invite criticism that Momentum’s members are naïve, idealistic and ill-prepared to take on their elders. But they are also by and large young professionals who know how to leverage social media, mobilize protests and, as Fekete-Győr stresses, “prove that politics can be sexy.” Their goal for the 2018 parliamentary election is humble: to cross the 5 percent threshold for gaining parliamentary seats. But even if it takes until the next vote, in 2022, for Momentum to come in first, Fekete-Győr would be just 33 — making him the youngest head of government in Hungary’s history. “Just like Jesus,” he smiles.

But György Schöpflin, Fidesz member of the European Parliament, is skeptical: “I don’t believe they can get to parliament. They lack any sort of experience.” According to May polls, Momentum will draw a mere 4 percent, but they have a year to build support, and they’ll need to establish a following outside the capital. “My constituency is located in the town of Szombathely. No one knows them there,” says Schöpflin. “They might be popular in Budapest, but Budapest is not Hungary.”

CEU headquarters

At this, Fekete-Győr reminds me the same was said about the old Fidesz before its candidates claimed 22 seats in the national assembly in 1990. “They also must have started in a basement like this.”

The mention of Fidesz prompts me to ask Fekete-Győr if he can imagine the next generation taking to the streets, in 20 or 30 years, to oppose him and his nonliberal regime. He thinks for a few moments, and then: “I can imagine them protesting, but not because we’re nonliberal. If someone doesn’t agree with our politics, that would be good. This is their right.”
