Rurik Gíslason, a previously unheralded midfielder from the German second division, has seen his Instagram following swell by 250,000 overnight after a brief cameo in his nation’s opening game in the World Cup.

He may have only played a half hour in Iceland’s 1-1 draw with Argentina but Rurik Gíslason has already made quite an impression on the World Cup – and more specifically, the sport’s female viewers.

Gíslason has proved to be particularly popular with South American football fans, with Brazilian actress Gabriela Lopes writing to her 2 million followers to ask “how is it possible to be this cute?”

Argentinian actress Gimena Accardi also noted to her audience that over 40,000 of her fans had followed Gíslason’s account in just 30 minutes – and it is still growing at an astounding rate. In fact, in the time is has taken to write this his Instagram following has grown by 10,000.

Gíslason’s new legion of female fans will have another chance to watch him in action when Iceland take on Nigeria in their second Group D match on Friday.

  • A 609-acre California coastal community, Walden Monterey, serves as a respite for those needing to recharge their batteries — especially the region’s leaders in tech.
  • The enclave’s founder, Nick Jekogian, invites potential homeowners to visit the property and stay in portable homes, called “roving rooms,” to truly experience the sustainable, outdoor-centric lifestyle the community has to offer.
  • Now, a new unit, called the Galini Sleeping Pod, will be used to house prospective buyers as they consider making a more permanent purchase of the land.
  • According to the pod’s designer, it’s much more than simply a mobile home.

About eight hours south of Silicon Valley sits the Monterey Peninsula, where you’ll find a fledgling community that’s being designed as a respite for the region’s tech elite.

Walden Monterey was founded in 2016 by developer Nick Jekogian, who set out to turn the 609 acre-land into a coastal “agrihood” community, a growing trend amongst millennials in which they shun the idea of belonging to golf communities, like the previous generation, and instead embrace agricultural neighborhoods that focus on nature, farms, and outdoor living.

The property plans to build 22 homes in total, with the lots they sit costing about $ 5 million each (three lots have been sold, as of November 2017). After the sales are made, buyers can work with a team of more than 20 architects assembled by Jekogian (or they can hire an outsider) to then shell out additional millions in home construction.

A key step in the buying process involves prospective buyers actually visiting the land. Jekogian invites people to stay in “roving rooms,” or small moveable glass houses, which allow them to experience what living on the land would actually be like.

But now, Walden Monterey will soon provide a new way to try out the land. The design studio DFA, founded by Laith Sayigh, was approached by Walden Monterey to design a house for potential buyers to stay in while they mull over purchase decisions.

The 3D-printed self-sustaining houses, dubbed Galini Sleeping Pods, are 300 square feet in size, can be moved anywhere, are powered by solar panels, wind turbines, and Tesla batteries, and will cost about $ 250,000 each. Sayigh told Business Insider that they’re not just a future staple for the Walden Monterey community, but that they represent “the next generation of construction technology.”

Take a look:

Meet the Galini Sleeping Pod.

It’s 300 square feet in size and takes around four to six weeks to construct.

The skin of the pod is developed by 3D-printing company Branch Technology, which is also currently developing construction methods for NASA’s Mars ventures. It’s a strong shell, consisting of carbon fiber, and sits atop a recycled aluminum base holding the pod off the ground.

The pods are made off-site and can be lugged from lot to lot on the property so that potential buyers can experience what it would be like to live there.

One of the pillars of the Walden Monterey project is sustainable design and living.

The Galini is no different: It’s 97% material efficient, meaning that only 3% of the materials that go into each unit are wasted. Everything else, the wood paneling inside, the recycled plastic used in construction, the LED lighting, the plumbing and mechanical systems, are “green” and efficient. As a result, the pod has no impact on the local environment.

A compression system works to draw water in from the atmosphere to provide the pod’s occupants with a water supply. Solar panels and wind turbines power the unit, as does a lightweight battery sourced from Tesla, tech billionaire Elon Musk’s energy company.

“[The pod] has a little belly under the floor,” said Sayigh. That’s where the Tesla battery rests.

Though ideally people would use fresh air to ventilate the pod by opening the doors, Sayigh said there is a system underneath the pod as well that can heat or cool the space if needed.

“If you’ve got Elon Musk coming to stay, you want to make sure the guy is comfortable,” Sayigh said.

Though the pod was born in conjunction with Walden Monterey, Sayigh said the vision for it extends past the Silicon Valley community.

Courtesy of DFA

The unit’s mobility means it can be put on the back of a truck and transported anywhere: to an agrihood community on California’s Monterey coastline, or an obscure patch of land in the Nevada desert. It could potentially replace more environmentally unfriendly mobile homes as we know them.

“This is the sustainable airstream of our time,” Sayigh said.

  • The McLaren 570S Spider walks a fine line between English sports car and a no-holds-barred exotic supercar.
  • The 570S is powered by a 562 horsepower, 3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V8.
  • It can do 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 204 mph.
  • In the marketplace, the 570S Spider competes against the Audi R8 V10 Spyder and the Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet.

The McLaren 570S Spider is a supercar. Sort of.

The 570S is a mainstay of McLaren’s entry-level Sports Series, and the company openly calls the stylish mid-engined speed machine a sports car.

But step on the gas, and the 570S will quickly convince you of its European supercar credentials complete with supercar power, speed, and charisma.

Last fall, Business Insider spent a week with a brand-new McLaren 570S Spider in an eye-catching Sicilian Yellow paint job.

The 570S Spider starts at $ 208,800, but our test car came packed with nearly $ 44,000 in options. That gave it an as-tested price of around $ 253,000.

That’s certainly a pretty penny.

So is this McLaren a sports car or a supercar — and is it worth its hefty price? Let’s find out:

Here it is. The new McLaren 570S Spider.

The bank’s workers got no raise.

Dimon now earns around 240 times the average pay of JPMorgan’s 250,000 employees, TheStreet reports. The CEO’s earnings are comprised of a $ 1.5 million salary and $ 28 million in “performance shares” linked to profitability. Dimon was rewarded for “strong performance in 2017 and through the cycle.” The average pay of the bank’s employees was not increased.

The bank’s net income fell one percent to $ 24.4 billion, while revenue climbed four percent last year.

Last week, Dimon announced that the company expects to save $ 3.5 billion from the new tax law, and may share the proceeds with employees. “We think it’s time that all of America share broadly, and we’re going to have things that we think are good for some employees,” Dimon said.

“That’s what we’re supposed to do. We’re a bank. We’re supposed to help support and grow communities. And it will enhance our growth in the future, too.”

Jamie Dimon hit the headlines in various media last year when he said that bitcoin is good only for drug dealers and murderers. Last week, he said he “regrets” disparaging bitcoin.

  • 18-year-old Hillary Diane Andales won the 2017 Breakthrough Junior Challenge for her video explaining the theory of relativity.
  • Andales took home $ 250,000 in scholarship money for her win.

The German physicist Albert Einstein needed complex equations to describe his theory of relativity, but 18-year-old Hillary Diane Andales of the Philippines does just fine with a pick-up truck, a few cell phones, and Usain Bolt.

Andales is the winner of the 2017 Breakthrough Junior Challenge, an annual competition that calls on teenagers across the world to submit videos no longer than three minutes that simplify big ideas in science or math. For her win, Andales took home the grand prize of $ 250,000 in scholarship money.

Her winning video was entitled “Relativity & The Equivalence of Reference Frames.” It began by displaying a sideways number, which you could interpret as either a “6” or a “9” depending on which way you turned your head. The perspective you take, Andales noted, determines your reference frame.

Reference frames are fundamental to relativity because observers perceive things differently if they’re in different locations, she explained.

Andales demonstrated this by recruiting three of her friends to record the sound a pickup truck made as it drove down a road and honked the horn. Each person stood in a different spot — one in front of the car, one behind the car, and one inside the car — and recorded the sound.

Each reference frame yielded a different sound, since the sound waves coming from the horn were either bunched up (producing a higher pitch) or spread out (a lower pitch) relative to where they got recorded.

The same test can be done with velocity and time, Andales explained. If Usain Bolt ran the 100-meter dash at 98% the speed of light, a 10-second finish from his perspective would read 40 seconds on the judge’s clock.

The reason is that faster clocks seem to move slower relative to a stationary observer. It’s the same principle that explains why clocks on the International Space Station, which orbits the Earth at 17,000 mph, lag behind terrestrial clocks by about 0.007 seconds every six months.

Thus, as Andales points out, Bolt is the Olympics’ best time traveler.

• US President Donald Trump just signed the GOP’s enormous tax overhaul into law.

• The plan is expected to boost take-home pay for most Americans — but not by much.

• Career site Zippia broke down how the final tax bill could affect take-home pay in 2018 for people in various occupations.

It’s official. US President Donald Trump just signed Republican’s massive tax overhaul into law, Business Insider reported.

Congressional Republicans have portrayed the new plan as a wage-boosting, job-creating boon to the middle class, as well as a means of simplifying the tax system. But the reform has earned harsh criticisms from the public and experts.

Business Insider’s Lauren Lyons Cole reported that while take-home pay is set to rise under the tax reform plan, most Americans won’t see a ton of extra cash in their pockets. But how much you save also depends on how much you currently earn.

Career site Zippia provided Business Insider with data breaking down how different occupations fare under the finalized tax plan. The estimated federal tax savings below are for a single, childless taxpayer who owns a house valued at three times their salary. Zippia’s calculations factored in whether a given taxpayer would benefit most from taking the standard deduction or itemizing deductions.

Following is a look at how people in a number of occupations, from shampooers to financial analysts to surgeons, could see their taxes change next year if the tax plan becomes law.

  • The Ferrari 488 GTB is the Italian carmaker’s top-dog supercar.
  • The Corvette Z06, with its mighty engine and bold design, is a supercar in the eyes of many.
  • The ‘Vette costs more than $ 100,000 less, but the Ferrari remains king of the hill.

Fresh off a battle between the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS and the Ford Mustang — won by the ‘Stang — we decided to revisit the world of unlikely face-offs between European and American legends.

Next up: the Ferrari 488 GTB against the Corvette Z06. Italy versus the USA. Maranello versus Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Again, on its face, this is a preposterous comparison: the dashing red mid-engine Ferrari, tipping the price scales at $ 250,000 to start, against the stonking front-engine ‘Vette, with a base of about $ 80,000.

Corvette Z06

But we like to look closer. The competition versions of the 488 and the ‘Vette face each other down on the world’s racetracks. The 488’s twin-turbocharged V8 cranks out 661 horsepower, while the Z06 uses a supercharged V8 to achieve 650.

The racing stuff and the motors alone give us a basis for this showdown. Read on to see who came out on top.

Behold the Ferrari 488 GTB, the successor to the much-loved 458 and the latest in the line of mid-engine supercars from Maranello.

Voila! The Corvette Z06. Until the new ZR1 was revealed in late 2017, the Z06 was the most powerful of the seventh-generation ‘Vettes. Our “Watkins Glen Gray Metallic” tester had a targa top, but the 488 can also be an open-air spider.

Matthew DeBord/Business Insider

We’ll start with the Prancing Horse. Though some fans prefer the finer-boned lines of the 458, the 488’s looks are stunning. Our test car arrived in a “Rosso Corsa Metallizzato” paint job — $ 12,500 extra.

Hollis Johnson

Let’s just get to the pricing right up front. To own the 458, you need to have the $ 250,000 and a willingness to accept that anything additional will cost a lot more. Also, you might not be able to buy the car.

Ferrari produces fewer than 10,000 total vehicles every year and sells them all. So even if you have the means, you could end up waiting for the privilege of ownership.

You accept this to be part of the Ferrari mystique.

A broken engagement is almost always a source of pain, disappointment, and turmoil for those involved.

But for one formerly betrothed couple in Florida, there’s also a huge rock worth thousands of dollars on the line.

Wyatt Koch has filed suit against Ivie Gabrielle Slocumb, his ex-fiancée, saying she failed to return her $ 250,000 engagement ring once their relationship ended, The Daily Mail reported Wednesday.

According to the Palm Beach Daily News, Koch bought the ring for $ 180,000 at Manufacturing Jewelers on New York’s Madison Avenue in March.

Koch is the 31-year-old son of the billionaire William Koch, who broke away from his brothers in the 1990s and hosted fundraisers for Donald Trump during his presidential campaign, according to Fortune.

Wyatt Koch lives in Florida, where he runs a fashion line, Wyatt Ingraham.

Here’s a look at the life and career of Wyatt Koch.

Koch’s parents, William Koch and Joan Granlund, divorced when he was young, and he was raised in Greenwich, Connecticut, and New York. He told Palm Beach Illustrated that he had fond memories of spending time at Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard too.

Koch’s love of fashion began early, from when he first donned a “Yves Saint Laurent black with white pinstripes ensemble” at the age of 15. He told the Palm Beach Record that he was voted “most fashionable” in high school.

In 2006, he moved to Palm Beach, where both of his parents live. Koch also owns a 450-acre ranch called Wonderland in Okeechobee, Florida.
