  • Grado just released its first Bluetooth headphones in its 65 year career. They’re called the GW100s, and they cost $ 250. 
  • They retain the company’s trademark open-back design, which makes music sound incredibly clear and natural, like you’re listening to music through speakers. The downside is that sound leaks in and out, but not too much. 
  • I was extremely impressed at how great the GW100s sounded given their price. Music was clear and detailed, although a little treble heavy. Live music stood out in particular. 
  • My only complaint about these headphones is that they have a Micro USB port. You’ll want to keep these headphones for years, and most high-end tech is moving over to charging on USB-C.
  • If you have $ 250 and want an audiophile-worthy pair of headphones, Grado’s GW100s are your best bet.

Greetings, Arsians! The Dealmaster is back this weekend with another round of deals to share. This time, we’re putting our focus on back to school sales; yes, the little Arsians are heading back to campus in the coming weeks (if they haven’t left already), which means it’s time for the annual rush of students and parents looking to find the proper gear.

Ars’ Jeff Dunn curated a buying guide of recommended back to school tech earlier this week, but if the goods there don’t work for you, it’s worth noting many retailers are still running gadget sales that could prove useful to college students. Various laptop makers are running deals on their notebooks, Amazon has kicked off another round of discounts on its Fire TV and Echo devices, and Best Buy is currently holding its annual “anniversary sale.”

Because he only wants the best for you and your kids, the Dealmaster has scoured the Web and rounded up a few highlights from these sales below, all of which could be handy to a returning student.   • Global mining companies invested almost $ 1 trillion in major projects between 2008-2017.
  • Despite strong industry conditions, almost one-third of that — $ 273 billion — was written off.

Global mining companies have had a good run since the start of this century. But research from Morgan Stanley shows big miners weren’t averse to shooting themselves in the foot while the money was flowing in.

In a research note on the global mining outlook, MS analysts said annual post-tax returns on capital for BHP and Rio averaged 14% from 2000-2017, up from 8% between 1981-1999.

Most of the crude exported from Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Iraq passes through the Strait of Hormuz. It is also the route for nearly all the liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments from the world’s largest exporter, Qatar.

On Thursday, the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the Strait Of Hormuz will be “for all or for no one,” according to Tasnim News agency. The US Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain, is dedicated to protecting commercial ships in the area.

“The declared nominal throughput capacity of the Strait of Hormuz is about 14 oil tankers per day, or 17 million barrels per day, or about half of the world’s daily crude oil exports. If exports through it stop, the law of supply and demand would double oil prices to $ 160 per barrel,” Vladimir Rojankovski, investment analyst at Global FX, told RT.

The analyst added that if the Strait is blocked for one or two months, oil traders could panic and buy out all available crude futures, sending prices to $ 250 per barrel. However, Rojankovski expressed doubt that Iran would do that since the area is highly militarized.

Artem Avinov, leading analyst with TeleTrade, also predicts that oil prices could jump to $ 250 per barrel if the Strait of Hormuz is blocked by Iran. But he also notes that such a scenario is highly improbable. “I am skeptical about the possibility of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to cut off oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz for several days or weeks. Even if Iran really acts, we are likely to see a quick economic or military retaliation, which will lead to the lifting of restrictions,” he told RT.

Another RT guest, Mikhail Mashchenko, who is an analyst at investors’ social network eToro, doesn’t believe crude will skyrocket even if a blockade takes place, since Brent never topped $ 150 per barrel.

He adds that US President Donald Trump’s rhetoric is propping up oil prices despite his wish to lower them. “If Trump didn’t try isolate Tehran so actively, investors would not have been buying oil so massively because of fears of a deficit. The fate of the oil market depends on the further actions of the top producers: How much the export from the US will decrease, and how much Saudi Arabia and Russia, which have a lot of unused capacities, will increase production,” he said.

Amazon is now shipping the $ 250 DeepLens camera it unveiled in November to help developers create AI image recognition apps and models. Though it looks pretty underwhelming, there’s a fair amount of power in the smallish body. The camera can shoot 1080p (4-megapixel) video, and the mini-computer below packs 8GB of RAM and an Atom processor with 106 gigaflops of performance — easily enough to run visual AI models offline.

You get the usual array of I/O ports and wireless options necessary for app development, including Micro HDMI, USB 2.0, a 2D microphone array and dual-band WiFi. Amazon said you don’t necessarily need machine learning or computer vision experience, and proved it by running a hackathon, with most teams never having done any AI programming before.

DeepLens supports a number of Amazon’s AI services, including Greengrass, TensorFlow and SageMaker, its latest machine learning tool (below). It comes with project templates that can distinguish between 20 objects, a face detection module, and another that can recognize around 30 actions like guitar playing (Amazon has a convenient guide here that makes it all look pretty simple.) As mentioned, you can now now order the camera today in the US (it should come elsewhere later) for $ 250.

Martin Lewis, 45, also known as Money Saving Expert or MSE, said you can get a tax rebate of £250 if you wear a uniform for work.

The Money Saving Expert told This Morning viewers those with a work uniform that they wash themselves simply had to fill in a form to get the money back.

You do not need to wear a full uniform – even a “branded T-shirt” would qualify for the refund, he said.

“On Monday I was talking about 5 refunds you may be due, but I only managed to get to four of them.

“So let me pick up the last one – it’s the uniform tax rebate,” he added.

“If you wear a recognisable uniform to work, even if it’s just a branded t-shirt, and you wash it yourself, you may be able to reclaim hundreds of pounds of tax back.

“Like Jackie who tweeted: “@MartinSLewis we got a £250 cheque today after writing to the HMRC about a uniform tax rebate for my husband! Thank you!”

“The amount you get varies from £12 to £74 a year depending on your tax rate and the industry you work in, plus you can go back four years in total, so this can be £100s for some.

“And you don’t need to pay anyone to do this, just fill out the P87 claim form on the Gov website.

“Once you’ve registered, your tax code will change, so you’ll be taxed less in the future.” 

He also outlined another couple of money saving and discount tips.
