This weekend, the cream of the racing world gathered in Daytona Beach, Florida, to kick off the 2018 racing season at the Rolex 24. It was a grid the likes of which we hadn’t seen in a long time. Veteran megastars from the worlds of Formula 1 and IndyCar, rising young hotshots making their names in GP2 and Formula E, and true talents from endurance racing came together in a field of 20 prototypes and 30 GT cars to fight for supremacy over 24 hours on the banking and infield at Daytona International Speedway.
When the checkered flag waved on Sunday afternoon, the winning car—the #5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac DPi-V.R of Joao Barbosa, Filipe Albuquerque, and Christian Fittipaldi had covered a record-breaking distance: 808 laps and 2,876.48 miles (4,629.2km). Such a furious pace is unusual for the Rolex 24; mixed grids and the endurance format often breed incidents and lots of yellow-flag running behind a safety car. But 2018 wasn’t like that. There was drama a-plenty, and even some heavy rainfall, but only a handful of cautions made this year a 24-hour sprint for the finish and a sign that, while other racing series might have their problems, the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship is definitely one to keep an eye on this year.

An online store in North Korea is now offering 24-hour delivery, according to state media.
First reported by NK News, the online store Abnal is allowing customers to purchase goods online at any time and will deliver them, for free, within the next day.
“Customers can purchase goods at any time and place through the mobile communication network at the store,” reported state-run Arirang-Meari. “It is scoring a great hit with the customers by enabling instant payment by card and offering various additional services and free delivery service within 24 hours.”
But it is not clear whether placing orders over a network “at the store” means shoppers need to physically be at one of Abnal’s stores or if this was an error in translation.
However, needing to physically visit a store to access digital sales may not be so unusual to North Koreans.
In Pyongyang, smartphone users must visit a physical app store to download apps, according to an AP report. The store is located in an IT centre and, once purchased, customers can download apps and security software via bluetooth.
But online shopping is growing in North Korea.
In 2015, AP reported the government’s General Bureau of Public Service was managing the North Korean intranet site Okryu, which sold women’s clothing, accessories, medicines, furniture, and food.
And in 2016, the site Manmulsang clocked up 3.2 million views in less than a year, according to NK News.
But these services, along with on-demand taxis and a new Netflix-like app, would largely be confined to a small number of wealthy North Koreans in the country’s capital.

JetBlue
JetBlue is offering 15% off flights, so if you already have a trip in mind you want to take in 2018, now’s a good time to get a discount.
The offer only applies to travel next year from January 10 to February 14, and February 26 through March 14. Also, the discount is on base airfare, not taxes and fees — depending on the flight, that means the actual percentage on your total purchase is likely to be closer to 8%. However, depending on your destination, combining that with one of JetBlue’s typically low fares will get you a deal.
To take advantage of the sale, use the promo code RECESS to book directly through JetBlue. Airfare must be booked by December 13, and there’s only one code allowed per booking.
If you’re wondering whether or not JetBlue flies to a destination you want to go, check out their route map. In addition to serving domestic airports, JetBlue also flies to many Caribbean destinations.
So, for example, you could save on a flight from New York City to Turks and Caicos, from January 19 to 26 (right around when winter gets real old), and get $ 23 off of the $ 284 round-trip flight. (That’s 15% off the base fare of $ 152.)
And even if a tropical locale isn’t part of your winter plan (maybe it should be?), you can also use this code to save on whatever flights you know you’ll need to take in the beginning of 2018.
As always in this new era of airline fees, double check what services you’ll need to purchase, as the cheapest prices are for the airline’s Blue fare which does not include checked baggage. Here’s a guide to JetBlue’s baggage fees.
At the same time, JetBlue is also having a contest with a grand prize of a year of flights — for you and a companion — for free.

Officials from the US Air Force and US Strategic Command have said there are no immediate plans to put nuclear bombers on 24-hour alert.
Questions about plans for US bombers came after a Defense One report that facility upgrades at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana were part of an effort to prepare for an order to go to 24-hour ready alert with US nuclear bombers.
“This is yet one more step in ensuring that we’re prepared,” Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein told Defense One, though he and other officials stressed that no such order had been given.
Among the upgrades planned at Barksdale are the renovation of quarters for crews who could man bombers stationed there and the construction of storage facilities for a nuclear cruise missile that is being developed. The B-52 and the B-2 are the only Air Force bombers capable of carrying out a nuclear attack.
While Goldfein is responsible for the Air Force and making sure its forces — including bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles — are trained and equipped for any scenario, Strategic Command makes operational decisions about US nuclear-weapons systems.

US Strategic Command chief Air Force Gen. John Hyten said through a spokesman that he was not currently considering putting bombers on alert.
“There are no discussions or plans for US Strategic Command to place bombers on alert. Any decisions related to the posture of nuclear forces would come from, or through, US Strategic Command,” the spokesman told Breaking Defense. “We constantly train, prepare and equip our personnel to ensure we have a combat-ready force that underwrites strategic deterrence in the 21st century.”
Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek acknowledged that base-infrastructure upgrades, exercises, and equipment modernization were all happening but said they were needed to “maintain a baseline level of readiness.”
“We do this routinely as part of our organize, train and equip mission so our forces are ready to respond when called upon,” she told Defense News, noting that a return to alert status was not imminent.
Air Force spokesman Brig. Gen. Ed Thomas also told reporters on Monday that that he had spoken with Strategic Command and Air Force Global Strike Command, which are both responsible for nuclear-bomber missions, and said a 24-hour ready alert was not being considered.
“There’s not any discussions or plans to bring bombers on a 24-hour nuclear alert right now,” Thomas said, according to Military.com.
But, when asked if the facilities being upgraded could support a 24-hour ready alert in the future, Thomas said, “Absolutely they could be,” because they are built for nuclear command, control, and communications crews. (Air Force Global Strike Command set up a new entity at Barksdale to oversee Air Force NC3 operations in April.)

Thomas added that the Air Force routinely upgraded its facilities but didn’t say if similar renovations were taking place at other facilities where nuclear bombers are stationed. He added that the Air Force would be ready to discuss going to ready-alert status, though he stressed that Strategic Command would be responsible for such a decision.
“Right now those discussions are not happening. Could they or would we be ready for them? Absolutely,” Thomas said. “Could we be doing the mission? We could stand that up very quickly. I just don’t want to overplay something.”
The alert facility at Barksdale has been undergoing work since August 2016, and Strategic Command provided some money for the renovations. While the facility could house nuclear-bomber crews, it is more likely to house crews manning the E4-B National Airborne Operations Center planes that are used by the defense secretary and other senior officials during times of emergency.
US has not had its nuclear bombers on 24-hour alert since 1991, and the 2010 New Start Treaty signed by the US and Russia prohibited putting heavy bombers on alert during peacetime.

Monarch Airlines has been granted the extension after it’s Atol is to expire by the end of today.
Atol protection means that if a company or airline goes bust, then passengers are protected with refunds and alternative travel, with all British travel firms required to hold one.
Without this automatic renewal for Monarch Airlines, it hints that there could be a risk of financial collapse.
Whilst flights are yet to be affected with the website still allowing flights to be booked, those flying with the airline in the near future may be worried.
It is the second time that the airline has been given an extension by ATOL in two years, sending a worrying message to anyone due to fly with them.
The Civil Aviation Authority has said: “We can confirm that Atol protection will remain available for eligible holiday bookings made with Monarch on Sunday.”
“The Atol renewal process is ongoing, and the CAA will conclude the processing of applications from approximately 1,300 Atol holders in the next 24 hours.
“In certain circumstances this could require a temporary extension to complete this process.
“However, we can confirm that Atol protection will remain available for eligible holiday bookings made with Monarch on Sunday.”
For now, the airline has stated that everything is going ahead as normal.
In a statement, the British airline has stated: “Our Atol licence has been temporarily extended while we conclude discussions. Our flights are operating as normal.”
However, it is feared that the airline won’t be able to cope if it does go into a financial crisis and that passengers will then be stranded.
According to the Metro, the Government has reportedly allowed ten Qatar Airways planes to be kept at various cities in case those who have booked with Monarch are in need to transport.
Any passengers who are still booking with the airline, are still protected by Atol, yet this only applies to package holidays, not single flight bookings.
Otherwise, Britons are urged to book using credit cards which also offer protection if anything is to happen.
Earlier this year, new legislation was to be brought in which will give holidaymakers more protection if a travel firm goes bust.
From 2018, it will offer more support so Britons won’t be left stranded abroad or out of pocket.
In a press release issued Friday, General Robert Neller, Commandant of the US Marine Corps, directed all US Marine Corps aviation units to “conduct an operational reset for a 24 hour-period.”
The operational pause will affect all Marine Corps aircraft, including those stationed abroad as well as deployed units. However, officials said that “no operational commitments will be impacted” during the pause.
All units were directed to conduct the temporary pause over the next two weeks, but each unit commander was given the flexibility to carry out the pause at their own discretion, “based on their unit’s operational commitments.”
Marine Corps spokesman Captain Christopher Harrison told USNI News that commanders of the deployed squadrons will be given an extension if the pause would cause them to sacrifice their operational obligations.
Neller ordered the pause in order to conduct a refresher course “on the fundamentals of safe flight operations, standardization, and combat readiness.”
“The intent is for flying squadrons to review selected incidents which occurred enterprise-wide and study historical examples of completed investigations in order to bring awareness and best practices to the fleet,” officials said in the press release.
Marine Corps officials added that operational pauses are “not uncommon and are viewed as a responsible step to refresh and review best practices and procedures so our units remain capable, safe, and ready.”
The pause comes in the weeks after two major Marine Corps aviation accidents resulted in the loss of nearly 20 lives. Last week, three Marines died when a tilt-rotor MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft crashed off the coast of Australia during a training mission.
In July, a KC-130T crashed in Mississippi after a transport mission, resulting in the death of 15 Marines and one Navy corpsman.
Harrison told USNI News that the Marines will study completed investigations and previous mishaps in order to “ensure all air wing Marines and sailors are informed of incidents happening across the enterprise and ensure they don’t happen again.”
On Friday, Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Texas), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said that the Marines’ decision to ground all aircraft is “further, indisputable evidence that America’s military is in a readiness crisis, and that the crisis is costing lives.”
“Washington has asked our military to do too much with too little for too long,” Thornberry said, according to the Marine Times. “As threats continue to grow, Congress must act as soon as possible to provide our military with all of the resources they need to repair what can be fixed and replace what cannot be repaired.”
The last time the Marine Corps ordered a 24-hour operational pause was in August 2016, after three F/A-18 Hornets with Marine pilots crashed in the span of two months. Two of those crashes were fatal.

Speaking to RT, Seyran Ates, a women’s rights activist and lawyer who is one of the unusual prayer site’s seven founders, said she is not surprised by the reaction, as she is the “heart” of a movement that is infringing on patriarchal values.
“I expected such a reaction. I expected that not everyone would like it. In general, of course, I knew that men wouldn’t give up the patriarchate so easily, because these are the patriarchal structures that we are attacking,” Ates told RT.
“At the moment I’ve only got threats, because I’m the theorist and, so to speak, the heart of the movement. But this is a movement and people should know that,” she went on, adding that, even if someone manages to silence her, the movement will continue on, as many people around the world already “have mobilized.”
Ates also announced that similar mosques will soon be opening in Freiburg, Cologne, and Switzerland. In Norway’s capital, Oslo, another ‘liberal mosque’ is to be opened within a year.
The mosque, which opened in Germany’s capital less than a month ago, has reversed several core Muslim rules. It allows men and women of all Muslim denominations to pray together, gives male and female worshippers equal rights, and is LGBT friendly. Moreover, it allows female imams, but prohibits women from entering the prayer site in niqabs or burkas.
Questioning the liberal mosque’s rules, Mohammed Shafiq, Chief Executive of the Ramadhan Foundation, told RT that, according to 1,400-year-old Islamic traditions, the person leading the prayer must be male.
“Women are absolutely essential part to be involved in the mosque, but the main prayers have to be led by a man, and any attempt to change that is distorting 1,400 year of Islamic history and we reject that,” Shafiq stated, adding that the core principles of Islam are still relevant and must not be changed.
The mosque has triggered a spat between Germany and Turkey, as the Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) has condemned it, calling its practices a provocation. Diyanet also accused the founders of following the ideas of Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara has accused of masterminding the failed coup attempt in Turkey in July of 2016.
Berlin hit back, saying German citizens have the right to religious freedom and expression.
The co-founder of the Berlin mosque was surprised to hear about Turkey’s allegations and worried that they could scare Turkish people away.
“I didn’t expect – and it was naive of me – that Turkey would associate me with Fethullah Gulen terrorists, that they would suddenly call me a Gulen supporter. Partly because of this, Turkish people are afraid to come to us, but they know for sure that we’re not Gulen terrorists,” Ates said.
She said earlier that threats must not prevent people from fighting for their values, while calling on civil society to “fight together against this hatred” and make things change.

Twitter will partner with Bloomberg as part of its plans to stream live video 24 hours a day, The Wall Street Journal reports. The deal will see Bloomberg producing news programming specifically for Twitter, mixing live news reported from Bloomberg’s global bureaus with videos posted by verified Twitter users, and streaming around the clock.
The news service has yet to be named, but according to the WSJ, will be officially announced on Monday by Michael Bloomberg and Jack Dorsey. Terms of the deal were not divulged, but the service will be supported by ads, and Bloomberg will have control over the content of the feed. The service is expected to go live this fall.
Bloomberg Media’s CEO, Justin Smith, said that the service would “be focused on the most important news for an intelligent audience around the globe,” saying that it would be “broader in focus than our existing network.” Anthony Noto, Twitter’s COO and CFO, said that the Bloomberg deal made Twitter a viable alternative for cord cutters. “We really think we can reach audiences that are not paying for TV and are watching television on the go and we think Bloomberg is the perfect partner for us to start with,” he said.
The deal is the first to be announced after Twitter made its ambitions to broadcast live video around-the-clock were publicly announced. The company indicated it was looking more at 24-hour news and sport channels as models than services like Netflix, aiming for the kind of programming people could drop in and out of. Describing what he envisioned for the channels, Noto said users could “focus in on it when you hear something that’s of interest, but then maybe not be 100 percent focused on it when it’s not of interest.”
