In an interesting twist on the clichéd device tease, HTC has preempted an iFixit-style teardown by showing the back and guts of the phone it’s about to release. It looks like the U12 (or U12+) smartphone will arrive on May 23rd, judging by the parts and shape. According to several leaks, it will sport dual rear 12- and 16-megapixel cameras, probably to allow for zooming with no detail loss, along with dual 8-megapixel front cameras.
Coming Soon. A phone that is more than the sum of its specs. pic.twitter.com/m2skJSK0qt
— HTC (@htc) May 3, 2018
You’re also likely to see a state-of-the-art Snapdragon 845 chip, 6-inch QHD+ screen, 6GB of RAM max, a 3,420 mAh battery, IP68 water resistance and the same squeeze options found on the U11 and U11+ models. Slow software updates might be a thing of the past, as HTC reportedly plans to offer Google’s Project Treble to fast-track them.
In a tweet, HTC called it “a phone that is more than the sum of its specs.” Okay, so it did lapse into cliché there, but either way, we’ll be on hand when it arrives on May 23rd to see if it lives up to the hyperbole.

Nintendo did many things to mark the 30th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., but there’s been one you couldn’t usually get your hands on unless you lived in Japan: the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia. You’ll be glad to hear that it’s coming to the West, though. Dark Horse Publishing has announced that the official guide to Mario’s universe will be available in a standard edition in the US on October 23rd for $ 40. Amazon is also hinting at releases in the UK and Europe, although we don’t have official information as of this writing.
The 256-page book is full of information and artwork for 17 games in the Super Mario series, including character info, developer interviews and other tidbits. Just don’t expect it to be up to date. As the dates above suggest, you probably won’t find Super Mario Odyssey or Super Mario Run in the book unless there’s an addendum. And this is going to focus on the core Mario games, not offshoots like Paper Mario. Despite the “encyclopedia” in the title, this is more of a look back at a specific period in the franchise’s history than a definitive compendium.

His Jack Reacher novels, along with The Girl On The Train by Paula Hawkins and Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, have topped bestseller lists, while TV crime dramas attract huge viewing figures.
Child says the depressing nature of world affairs, culminating in Donald Trump becoming US President in January, has inspired writers to become more creative.
In doing so they have given readers a break from reality into a safe world where they know the bad people will be caught and punished, and order will be restored.
He says: “What we are now seeing (and it’s always been there) is that crime fiction provides you with a linear and comprehensible story with a beginning, a middle and an end, which a lot of literature doesn’t.
“But more than that it gives us the answer within a couple of days. There is a bad, bad situation and you read it for a couple of days and then at the end there is a solution, the problem is solved, the bad guy is caught and punished.”

The current state of world affairs culminating in Donald Trump has made writers more creative
Writers are burrowing deeper and deeper into fantasy to get away from the appalling mess we have created in the world
“It is a consolation for what we don’t get in real life, which is tremendously reassuring.”
Child feels the standard of thrillers being produced by his contemporaries has risen as they seek to disappear into fantasy worlds.
He says: “I have found it to be quite remarkable because I read all of my friends’ books and this year all are exceptionally good. It was just one after the other. You read a book and think ‘Wow, that is good’, which you expect occasionally, and then you read another and think ‘Wow, that’s also really good’.
“I’m thinking that the writers themselves are burrowing deeper and deeper into fantasy to get away from the appalling mess we have created in the world.
“Maybe as readers we are too, we are that much more anxious to escape. So I think it is producing pretty good results for writers and readers, despite being dreadful in all other ways.”

Lee Child has said writers are burrowing into fiction to escape current events
Born James Grant in Coventry in 1954, Child grew up in Birmingham and only started writing after being sacked from his job at Granada TV in 1995.
After going out and buying a pad and pencil for £3.99 he wrote Killing Floor, the first Reacher story, and re-invented himself as Lee Child.
His thrillers are now a publishing phenomenon, dominating the fiction charts with sales of more than 100 million worldwide and sparking hit film adaptations starring Tom Cruise.
Yet he believes he has been so successful because he never dreamed of becoming a writer and approached it as a profession, saying: “I remarkably had never thought about being a writer. I always loved reading books but was very incurious about where they came from, how they were made.
“I really had no sensation of what went into them until five years before I lost my job and made the change. Maybe it was subconscious because I began to realise TV was not going to be a job for life any more, so I started looking at the bones of writing, what lay beneath.
“Maybe that is why I have been so successful, because I did not want to be a writer per se. I certainly wanted to be an entertainer but the avenue was unimportant.
“I don’t have composition books from when I was seven years old, like many writers do. The learning curve for writing was complete and it was immense. I just sat down to tell a story and I was fortunate in being a bit enraged by being fired, full of anger and full of passion, and used that energy to just blitz it through.”
While having refined his writing technique since then, using proficiency instead of sheer energy, he still has a discipline few others can match, always starting a new novel on the date he went out and bought the pad and pencil to start writing Killing Floor.
He says: “I start writing my next novel on September 1 every year, partly for sentimental reasons but also because the weird thing about being a writer for me is that you have got to believe many different things but each of them you have to believe 100 per cent.
“So you absolutely have to believe that it is art, it is joy, it is creativity. You must believe that you mustn’t be compromised but on the other hand you must believe 100 per cent that it is a job and it has to be done professionally.”

Lee says that while one should enjoy writing, you must remember to do so professionally
“For me, and I’m sure a lot of professional writers, there is no point in waiting for the muse to inspire you – you make the muse arrive by showing up and doing the work. So I start every year partly for the sentimental anniversary but also because this is a profession. I have to show up to work.”
Child has moved to a new apartment in Manhattan and despite it having spectacular views of Central Park, he writes in a back bedroom, looking out at a brick wall.
“The benefit is that I can work in my pyjamas, I can get into it and find I have been writing for five hours and I’m still in my pyjamas.
“That’s the good side but it does mean that you can never get away from it. I can be eating dinner and I suddenly realise what word I should have used, so I just have to go and change it, which I wasn’t able to do when I wrote in an office.”

His 22nd Reacher novel, The Midnight Line, was published last month, yet Child is hard at work on the 23rd, titled Yesterday.
He was a star guest at Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, in July, where he won the Outstanding Contribution to Crime Fiction award, joining great authors such as Ruth Rendell, PD James and Colin Dexter.
Surprisingly he does not feel that he belongs in such illustrious company, saying: “All I have ever wanted to do is entertain people. I’m certainly succeeding in that but I’m not sure I’m as influential as people like Ruth Rendell or Val McDermid. These are very bright and talented people, and I feel I’m not quite in their league.”
Agreeing that the accolade was wonderful, he insists that he has no plans to retire, saying: “Hopefully I can get another one in another 20 years.”
Welcome to your Friday morning. As we prepare to phone in the rest of the day, read about how a lensless camera is possible with math, how car buyers aren’t quite sold on autonomous vehicles, and how one company’s working on a Photoshop for your voice.
Caltech’s lensless camera could make our phones truly flat
While phones get thinner, there’s one spot that keeps sticking out: the camera lens. Taking good pictures and being able to focus at multiple distances requires a layer of glass that’s a certain size, but there’s really no getting around it — or is there? Researchers at Caltech have devised an “optical phased array” chip that uses math as a substitute for a lens. By adding a time delay — down to a quadrillionth of a second — to the light received at different locations on the chip, it can change focus without a lens.

Motorola’s new Moto E4 isn’t exactly thrilling, but it’s cheap
Motorola is as well known for its budget phones as it is for flagships, so no one was surprised when it revealed its fourth-generation Moto E, earlier this month. Motorola’s E line always felt like a curiosity, as though the company was challenging itself to build a phone for as little as possible without turning it into a smoldering pile of garbage. Its track record speaks for itself: Motorola does fine work on the cheap, and that hasn’t changed. The frills here are few, but after a little hands-on time, the Moto E4 seems to be a strong option for just $ 130.
It’s trying out a feature that stops profile-photo theft
In India, Facebook has begun testing new tools that prevent anyone from sniping your profile picture for who knows what purpose. If you live in the country, you might see an option to turn on “profile-picture guard” next time you visit your News Feed. When you have the guard up, other people will no longer be able to save your pic or even screenshot it with an Android device. People not in your friends list won’t be able to tag anyone or themselves in your profile picture regardless of your tag settings, as well.
Car buyers aren’t thrilled about semi-autonomous features.
JD Power’s latest research into the likes and dislikes of car owners has two big takeaways: People love Kia and are pretty lukewarm about self-driving technology. Or, at least those components that most drivers can gain access to right now.
Amazon’s Echo Show displays your smart camera’s live video feed
Amazon’s Echo Show is getting another new trick, err, skill. Now the gizmo will link with the cameras on your home network and display their feeds when you say something like, “Alexa, show the front door.” This will work with cameras from the likes of Arlo, August, EZVIZ, IC Realtime, Nest and Vivint. If you don’t have a Show, saying the command phrase will give you an audio feed on your Dot or Echo. Better yet, Amazon has released the camera-control API into the wild, so developers can get cracking on even more implementations for it.
The Toronto Raptors selected Indiana forward OG Anunoby with the No. 23 pick in the NBA draft, adding an agile, physical player with the length of a centre.
The six-foot-eight Anunoby, who boasts an impressive seven-foot-two wingspan, was averaging 11.1 points and 5.4 rebounds and shooting 55.7 per cent from the field in his sophomore season. But his college career was cut short when he tore his ACL in January.
Keepin’ it OG at 23.

He’d played just 16 games this past season, and the injury added plenty of mystery around Anunoby’s stock heading into the draft.
Scouts touted Anunoby’s strength on the defensive end, and his ability to guard four positions.
His brother Chigbo is a defensive tackle with the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings.
The 19-year-old Anunoby — whose full first name is Ogugua — was born in London, but moved to Missouri at the age of four.
Anunoby was in Brooklyn for the draft, dressed in a blue plaid suit and blue bow tie. He confirmed that he would continue to wear his trademark short shorts next season in Toronto.

The Raptors acquired the pick in 2015 from Milwaukee, acquiring the draft rights to Norm Powell along with a future first-round pick in exchange for Greivis Vasquez.
]]>Tony Walter, who has been described as the Manchester attack’s 23rd victim, worked at a law firm near Edgware Road Underground station, where Mohammad Sidique Khan detonated a suicide bomb on July 7, 2005.
Walter was yards away from Khan when he set off the homemade device. Six people, as well as the bomber, died at the scene of the attack, while Walter was left with shrapnel injuries. It was one of four bombs set off in quick succession across the British capital.
Walter had struggled with the events he witnessed in 2005 and had been particularly distressed by the recent attacks in Westminster and Manchester.
He was said to have taken time off work in March, after Birmingham-based terrorist Khalid Masood drove into several people on Westminster Bridge and stabbed police officer Keith Palmer.
“After the Westminster attack he really struggled. He was off work for a few days saying he couldn’t cope with how it brought back the memories of 7/7,” a friend said, according to the Sun.
“Everyone that knew Tony believes he is the 23rd victim of the Manchester Arena attack. Suicide bomber Salman Abedi is responsible for Tony taking his life as well as those he killed,” the unnamed friend added.
Walker was found at his home in Tottenham, north London, on Wednesday – around 40 hours after the Manchester atrocity. The 52-year-old’s death is being treated as suicide.
“Police were called on Wednesday, 24 May shortly after 14.10 hours to an address following a concern for the welfare of the occupant,” a Scotland Yard spokesperson said.
“Officers forced entry to the property and found a 52-year-old man who was unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The man’s next of kin have been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious. The matter has been referred to the coroner.”
Walter’s sister-in-law, Sheila Walter, led the tributes.
“It’s a tragedy and we’re devastated. Tony was such a lovely man,” she said.
The 2005 bombings killed 56 people, including the four perpetrators, in a series of bombings across London.
The Westminster attack in March of this year took the lives of five people, including PC Palmer, as well as the attacker Masood.
The Manchester Arena bombing saw 22 people lose their lives, including 10 children and teens.

The Surface Laptop isn’t the only new piece of hardware Microsoft has coming up. The company sent out invites last night for an event in Shanghai on May 23rd, where it will “show the world what’s next.” That’s pretty cryptic, but a tweet from Microsoft’s Surface head, Panos Panay, might have spoiled the surprise a bit.

Our guess? We might finally see a follow-up to the Surface Pro 4, a machine that we love, but is currently stuck with 2015-era hardware. The Surface Pro 5, as we’ve been referring to it so far, should update the internals to Intel’s Kaby Lake CPUs, but we’re not expecting much of a design change, according Paul Thurrott.

Hey, good morning!
Welcome to your Thursday morning. Now relax: we tap technology for ways to relax and decompress, get excited by Netflix’s next big budget project, and learn how Google is trying to make location sharing happen. Again.
Adult Week: Finding inner peace (with help from your smartphone)
Technology is draining. Social media networks are programmed to make you come back for more, always swiping to refresh, like and post. You are constantly on your PC, your smartphone, your TV. You fall asleep to Netflix or reading Twitter as it spits up funny gifs or more bad news. It can wear you down. So what did Mat Smith do? What should you do? Those are probably different answers. There’s no shortage of introductory guides to meditation, relaxation podcasts and devices that promise to help or offer relief, but here are some things to start with.
Apple hopes cheap, not powerful, will turn around iPad sales
Apple has been trying to reverse declining iPad sales for several years now, without much success. For the past year and a half, that strategy could be summed up in one word: more. More power, more screen real estate, more accessories. And more money. Its new iPad, however, is cheaper. It might be what the company needs to get the many people who bought iPads three or four years ago to upgrade.
Critical LastPass bugs identified that could leak passwords or worse
Using a password manager is a convenient way to not only keep track of logins but make sure they’re all unique. That’s key to keeping accounts safe in a world where billion-account databases are available on the dark web, but it does rely on the app remaining secure. Google Project Zero researcher Tavis Ormandy identified a few bugs in extensions for LastPass that could allow someone to steal a target’s passwords, or in some cases run code on their computer.
The company quickly responded to deal with the issues, so any users should make sure they’re patched up (and using two-factor authentication in addition to unique passwords, or perhaps another manager that works separately from the browser like KeePass.)
Google Maps’ location-sharing feature is one you might actually use
Google has been busy beefing up Maps recently. Beyond just using it for turn-by-turn directions, you can now use Maps to remember where you parked, find reviews for nearby restaurants and avoid heavily congested areas. This week, it added location-sharing. With just a few taps in the app, you can now share your real-time location with friends and family. It’s a feature that can be handy for when you’re running late to an appointment or if you simply want your buddies to keep tabs on your whereabouts.
Review: The Galaxy Tab S3 is good, but not $ 600 good
The Galaxy Tab S3 has a promising list of features, including its HDR-friendly screen, quad-speaker array, included S Pen and powerful processor. And they mostly work as touted. Its colorful and sharp display, coupled with loud audio, makes for satisfying multimedia consumption. It’s also a responsive machine and lasts more than 11 hours on a charge. But the Tab S3 and its companion keyboard, which costs an extra $ 130, aren’t good enough for intensive typing and multitasking.
Nintendo cites ‘manufacturing variation’ for Joy-Con issues
Since the Switch started to show up in gamer’s homes, some have been complaining about issues with its wireless Joy-Cons. Problems with losing connection, particularly on the left one, have plagued some enough to attempt DIY fixes, but Nintendo says a “manufacturing variation” is to blame for the issue. The company added that it’s figured out a “simple fix” for anyone with affected Joy-Cons to improve patchy connectivity. It seems to involve a spot of conductive foam.
‘Super Mario Run’ for Android is here
If you were expecting to see Nintendo’s new mobile game on Android today, then surprise — it’s already out. No matter what platform you play on, Super Mario Run is updated to version 2.0 with new character choices and more. It’s free to try, so grab it on Google Play and find out why iOS players spent $ 53 million bucks on the game in January.
Google plans faster updates for all Android phones in 2017
Once again, Google says it’s prioritizing updates for Android devices. The platform has historically struggled with slow rollouts of updates to many devices, limiting features and current security patches to a small group. To turn that around, Google says it’s giving manufacturers more data on how each one is doing with rollouts and it’s reducing the size of patches. Already, it claims 78 percent of flagship devices were current with security updates at the end of 2016 — hopefully, that trend continues to spread this year.

Android users won’t have to wait much longer to find out whether or not Super Mario Run has justified any of the hype. Nintendo has made good on its earlier promise and revealed that the Android edition of the touchscreen runner will arrive on March 23rd, in sync with version 2.0 of the game. That update will give you more character choices beyond the current six, and will throw free players a bone by letting them tackle World 1-4 if they complete a challenge. There’s more to 2.0 than that, Nintendo teases, but you’ll have to wait to learn the rest.
The news sets a firm end date for Apple’s temporary exclusive on Super Mario Run, which first hit iOS in December. That lock-in wasn’t great news for Android fans, but it appears to have paid off for both Apple and Nintendo. Even though the number of paying customers didn’t meet Nintendo’s loftier goals, the game still raked in $ 53 million in revenue before the end of January — no mean feat when it was only available on the smaller of the two dominant mobile platforms. While Nintendo isn’t necessarily poised for a windfall the moment Mario comes to Android, it’s no doubt eager to see how the wider device support improves its bottom line.
