Rising seas will displace 150 million people by 2100, says climate report https://briefnews.eu/rising-seas-will-displace-150-million-people-by-2100-says-climate-report/ https://briefnews.eu/rising-seas-will-displace-150-million-people-by-2100-says-climate-report/#respond Sun, 17 Dec 2017 15:01:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rising-seas-will-displace-150-million-people-by-2100-says-climate-report/

Lands inhabited by more than 150 million people could be submerged in water by the end of this century. That’s according to the latest projections from a group of US researchers.

A new study published in the journal Earth’s Future used the latest information from the Antarctic ice sheet and combined it with existing models on the expected rise in sea levels.

The academics behind the report found that if levels of greenhouse gas emission remain high, the median global average sea-level rise could be 4ft 9ins (1.5 meters) by 2100. Astonishingly, this is double the estimate of 2ft 5ins (736cm) projected by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2014.

The team, made up of researchers from the top universities in the US, believes the IPCC report did not account for the collapse of large parts of the Antarctic Ice Sheet – something a slew of scientific papers have since found is very likely to happen. In the event of such a sea level rise, some 153 million will be displaced, a population equivalent to half the size of the US.

A study published in 2015 found that a relatively small amount of melting over a few decades could lead to the fall of the entire ice sheet and increase global sea levels by as much as 3 meters. Despite the “deeply uncertain physics,” researchers believe cuts to greenhouse gas emissions over the next several years could significantly reduce the possibility of a disaster after 2050. The team estimates that by this time the sea level will have risen by around 1ft (30cm).

Researchers from several institutions, including Rutgers University, Princeton and Harvard, worked with Climate Central to create an interactive map which illustrates sea level projections in cities across the globe. The map provides projections that both include and exclude the new Antarctic research.

Local rises would vary from region to region under the same scenario and would exceed the global average for all US Gulf and Atlantic coast locations, according to the report.

The study ‘Evolving Understanding of Antarctic Ice-Sheet Physics and Ambiguity in Probabilistic Sea-Level Projections’ is the first to integrate Antarctic models into sea-level projections.

6th mass extinction event could happen by 2100 – study finds https://briefnews.eu/6th-mass-extinction-event-could-happen-by-2100-study-finds/ https://briefnews.eu/6th-mass-extinction-event-could-happen-by-2100-study-finds/#respond Thu, 21 Sep 2017 15:06:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/6th-mass-extinction-event-could-happen-by-2100-study-finds/

Over the past 540 million years Earth has suffered five mass extinction events, the worst of which wiped out more than 9 per cent of marine life on the planet. A new study has suggested that the next such catastrophe might not be too far away.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) geophysicist and mathematician, Daniel Rothman has been busy studying previous mass extinctions. He reckons the next one might be a mere 83 years away.

The previous five catastrophic events each unfolded over millions of years and involved the natural cycle of carbon through the oceans and atmosphere being disturbed, resulting, in some cases, the death of almost all life on Earth.

The award-winning mathematician identified two “thresholds of catastrophe” that, if exceeded, would upset the natural order of the cycle, leading to an unstable environment and eventually a mass extinction.

The first relates to changes in the carbon cycle over a period of thousands or millions of years. A mass extinction will occur if the rate of change in the cycle occurs faster than global ecosystems can adapt.

The second pertains to the size or magnitude of the carbon flux over a shorter period, as has been the case over the last century.

Therein lies a problem, however, as Rothman says: “How can you really compare these great events in the geologic past, which occur over such vast timescales, to what’s going on today, which is centuries at the longest?”

“So I sat down one summer day and tried to think about how one might go about this systematically.”

He set about searching through hundreds of geochemistry papers trying to find an answer, classifying the events as either long or short in duration. Throughout his studies, Rothman identified 31 instances over the past 542 million years in which a major change occurred in the carbon cycle.

Following this, he devised a mathematical formula to determine the total mass of carbon added to the oceans during each event, after which “it became evident that there was a characteristic rate of change that the system basically didn’t like to go past.”

Rothman estimates this to be 310 gigatons. He thinks that given the rise of carbon dioxide over the last century, a sixth mass extinction could be on the way as estimates suggest that humans will add roughly 310 gigatons to the cycle by 2100.

“This is not saying that disaster occurs the next day,” Rothman said. “It’s saying that, if left unchecked, the carbon cycle would move into a realm which would be no longer stable, and would behave in a way that would be difficult to predict. In the geologic past, this type of behavior is associated with mass extinction.”

Rothman’s paper was published Wednesday in the journal Science Advances.

Suzuki’s Swift Sport has been a decent hot hatchback in foreign markets since its introduction in 2005, and the newest model looks to keep that reputation lit. We Americans still can’t buy a Swift, mostly because we can’t buy any new Suzuki. The company exited these shores years ago. So gaze from afar at the brand’s most fun-minded model as it makes its debut at the 2017 Frankfurt auto show.

–

Compared to an everyday Swift, the roughly 2100-pound Sport injects some muscle via a 138-hp turbocharged 1.4-liter inline-four. A six-speed manual transmission manages the flow of engine power to the front wheels, and the strut front and twist-beam rear suspension is lowered and firmed up for better dynamics. The Sport’s tires are 1.6 inches wider than before and wrap around slick-looking 17-inch wheels; the additional width aids high-speed stability, according to Suzuki.

These go-fast goodies are stuffed into the cheeky new Swift’s tiny body. The grille and front intakes are notably larger and angrier-looking than the regular model’s, and two big exhaust outlets poke out from the rear bumper. For those who prioritize safety in the small hot hatchbacks they can’t buy in the United States, the Swift Sport offers a suite of active-safety tech, from automated emergency braking to lane-departure warning. It’s a neat little car that’d be a great competitor for Ford’s Fiesta ST here, but it unfortunately remains forbidden fruit—largely because Suzuki’s lineup as a whole failed to capture American customers.

Red alert: Heatwave Lucifer grills Europe as study says heat may kill 150K Europeans a year by 2100 https://briefnews.eu/red-alert-heatwave-lucifer-grills-europe-as-study-says-heat-may-kill-150k-europeans-a-year-by-2100/ https://briefnews.eu/red-alert-heatwave-lucifer-grills-europe-as-study-says-heat-may-kill-150k-europeans-a-year-by-2100/#respond Sat, 05 Aug 2017 14:05:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/red-alert-heatwave-lucifer-grills-europe-as-study-says-heat-may-kill-150k-europeans-a-year-by-2100/ Ten southern and central European countries have declared a red alert after heatwave ‘Lucifer’ caused temperatures to skyrocket over 40C, with scientists warning that the extreme heat could end up killing 152,000 people a year by 2100.

Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, and Serbia are on red alert, European forecast network Meteoalarm said on Saturday.

Florence’s famous Uffizi Gallery was temporarily closed on Friday after the museum’s air conditioning system broke down, ANSA news agency reported.

Greece, Spain, Bulgaria, France, Macedonia, Slovakia, and Moldova have issued orange alerts to stress the potential for worsening weather conditions.

At least two people have died from the heat, one in Romania and one in Poland, Reuters reported, adding that many more have been taken to the hospital for sunstroke.

“In two hours of my shift today I saw four people fainting on the street and complaining of heat exhaustion,” a traffic warden told Reuters in Belgrade.

Authorities in Serbia, Bosnia, Macedonia, and Croatia advised people to stay indoors to avoid the heat, with temperatures expected to stay around 40C (104F) next week.

Record-high temperatures hit Croatia, with Split Airport recording 42C, breaking the previous record of 40C in 2015.

Heatwave deaths

Scientists warned on Friday that Europe’s death toll from weather disasters could rise 50-fold by the year 2100, with weather-related disasters, such as heatwaves and cold waves, wildfires, droughts, river and coastal floods, and windstorms, which could affect about two-thirds of the European population annually by the end of the century.

“We found that weather-related disasters could affect about two-thirds of the European population annually by the year 2100 (351 million people exposed per year [uncertainty range 126 million to 523 million] during the period 2071–100) compared with 5% during the reference period (1981–2010; 25 million people exposed per year). About 50 times the number of fatalities occurring annually during the reference period (3,000 deaths) could occur by the year 2100 (152,000 deaths [80,500–239,800]),” researchers said in a study published in The Lancet Planetary Health journal.

The detailed study found that “unless global warming is curbed as a matter of urgency and appropriate adaptation measures are taken, about 350 million Europeans could be exposed to harmful climate extremes on an annual basis by the end of this century.”

Researchers scrutinized the effects of the most commonly found weather-related disasters in the 28 EU states, as well as Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland, analyzing disaster records from 1981 to 2010. The challenge was to combine past records with calculations of how climate change is likely to evaluate and what consequences this may cause.

“Heatwaves are the most lethal weather-related hazard,” researchers noted, adding that during the reference period (between 1981 and 2010), 2,700 heat-related fatalities per year were reported in Europe by the disaster databases.

“This number is projected to grow exponentially, to reach 151,500 by the period 2071–2100, or 99% of the total future weather-related disaster death toll,” they warned.

In January, a report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency hinted at the possibility of an “extreme” sea-level rise scenario that would put some American landmarks, towns, and cities underwater during this century.

That scenario is considered unlikely, but possible. If the worst climate change predictions come true, parts of the US will be devastated by flooding and greater exposure to storm surges.

Research and advocacy group Climate Central took the projections laid out in NOAA’s report and created a plug-in for Google Earth that shows how catastrophic the damage would be if the flooding happened today. You can install it (directions here) and see anywhere in the US.

We surveyed major US cities to see what they might look like in the year 2100.

In a worst case scenario, flooding caused by polar melting and ice-sheet collapses could cause a sea level rise of 10 to 12 feet by 2100, NOAA reported in January.

Bitcoin blows past $2,100 for the first time https://briefnews.eu/bitcoin-blows-past-2100-for-the-first-time/ https://briefnews.eu/bitcoin-blows-past-2100-for-the-first-time/#respond Mon, 22 May 2017 11:44:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bitcoin-blows-past-2100-for-the-first-time/ BitcoinMarkets Insider

Bitcoin is seemingly unstoppable right now.

The cryptocurrency topped both $ 2,000 and $ 2,100 for the first time Sunday night and Monday morning. It’s now trading up by $ 106.11, or 5.2%, at $ 2,130.69 a coin.

Monday’s advance has been fueled by further weakness in the US dollar and news that Peach has become Japan’s first airline to accept the cryptocurrency, Bloomberg says.

Bitcoin has gained in 24 of the past 27 sessions, and it is up by more than 82% over that time. According to CoinMarketCap.com, bitcoin now has a market cap of nearly $ 35.9 billion.

The rally has seemingly been sparked by news out of Japan at the beginning of April that bitcoin had become a legal payment method in the country. Along the way, Ulmart, Russia’s largest online retailer, said it would begin accepting bitcoin even though Russia had said it wouldn’t explore the cryptocurrency until 2018.

The gains also seem to be boosted by speculation the US Securities and Exchange Commission could overturn its ruling on the Winklevoss twins’ bitcoin exchange-traded fund. The SEC was accepting public comment on its decision until May 15, but it hasn’t announced whether it will overturn its rejection of the ETF.

Bitcoin has gained 125% this year. Except for 2014, it has been the top-performing currency every year since 2010.

From the perspective of a living organism, the history of the Earth has included an odd combination of radical change and fortunate stability. Continents have wandered from polar to equatorial homes, mountain ranges have risen and crumbled away, and entire oceans have opened and disappeared. But even through ice ages and ice-free times, conditions have stayed within a fairly narrow window that allowed the continued existence of life.

That relative stability occurred despite the fact that our Sun has not been entirely helpful. The Sun’s brightness has slowly increased as it matures. While about 1,368 watts of solar radiation bathes each square meter of the Earth’s surface now, it was only around 1,000 watts when the Earth was a young planet. A little over 400 million years ago, before the first fish developed legs to explore the world above sea level, sunshine was about 50 watts per square meter less than it is today. It seems that weaker Sun was compensated by a stronger greenhouse effect (due to higher atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations), since the most recent few million years were actually among the coolest.

But now we’re heading towards a situation where the Sun is brighter and we’re going to have greenhouse gas levels not seen for millions of years. What might that combination produce?
