President Donald Trump’s administration on Tuesday released its new plan to regulate carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants.
Trump’s Affordable Clean Energy plan includes far less stringent regulations than the Clean Power Plan, which former President Barack Obama’s administration proposed in 2015. The new rules would allow states to write their own regulations for coal-fired power plants, whereas the Obama-era plan (which never went into effect) sought to shift electricity production to less carbon-intensive sources.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

A report by the UK House of Commons library has warned that the continued accumulation of wealth at the top will fuel growing distrust and anger over the coming decade unless action is taken to restore balance.
According to the report, seen by The Guardian, if trends seen since the 2008 financial crash were to continue, then the top 1 percent will hold 64 percent of the world’s wealth by 2030. Even taking the financial crash into account, and measuring their assets over a longer period, they would still hold more than half of all wealth.
Data showed that since 2008, the wealth of the super-rich 1 percent has been growing at an average of 6 percent a year – much faster than the 3 percent growth in wealth of the remaining 99 percent of the world’s population. Should that continue, the top 1 percent would hold wealth equating to $ 305 trillion (£216.5 trillion) – up from $ 140 trillion today.
The research was commissioned by former Labour cabinet minister Liam Byrne, who along with other MPs, academics, business leaders, trade unions and civil society leaders is focused on addressing the problem. Byrne believes that global inequality is “now at a tipping point.”
“If we don’t take steps to rewrite the rules of how our economies work, then we condemn ourselves to a future that remains unequal for good,” he said. “That’s morally bad, and economically disastrous, risking a new explosion in instability, corruption and poverty.”
A report by global charity Oxfam showed that the world’s richest 1 percent bagged 82 percent of global wealth in 2017, while the poorest got nothing. Last year saw the biggest increase in the number of billionaires in history, with new ones created at a rate of one every two days. Their wealth has increased by 13 percent a year on average in the decade from 2006 to 2015, Oxfam said.

Petrol and diesel cars could be banned in the UK by 2030
There have been calls for the ban of petrol and diesel cars in the UK to be brought forward, as the 2040 target “lacks sufficient ambition”, said MPs.
A new joint committee report has urged the Government to determine the earliest date manufacturers must sell only alternatively fuelled vehicles in the UK.
It was launched amid concerns surrounding the Government’s repeat court challenges over their air quality plan from environmental lawyers.
Other motives of the plan were to try and reduce the estimated 40,000 premature deaths each year in the UK.
Car emissions are linked to, and can cause, respiratory issues, heart disease and even dementia.
Elsewhere in the plan were calls for the automotive industry to contribute to a new clean air fund.
The ongoing problem with car emissions, mainly nitrogen dioxide emissions which are present in higher quantities in diesel cars, started with the Volkswagen scandal in 2015.
Nervousness and uncertainty surrounding diesel has led to a decline in the the fuel type’s market share from 47 per cent in 2016 to 37.8 per cent in 2017.
Automakers have hit back at ministers claiming that the they have an anti-diesel agenda which is causing the decline in sales
Last year it was announced that the sale of new petrol and diesel cars would be banned in the UK by 2040.
The Commons’ Environment Food and Rural Affairs, Environmental Audit, Health and Social Care, and Transport Committees warned that this did not do enough to address the issue.
There is insufficient urgency in current policies to accelerate vehicle fleet renewal
Their report said: “There is insufficient urgency in current policies to accelerate vehicle fleet renewal.
“Whilst we welcome the Government’s commitment to end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2040, this target lacks sufficient ambition.
“It is too distant to produce a step-change in industry and local government planning, and falls far behind similar commitments from other countries.”
Other countries and cities across Europe have stated more ambitious plans to slash air pollution.
Rome plans to stop diesel cars from entering its centre by 2024, while authorities in Paris want to ban both petrol and diesel cars by 2030.
Other cities including Athens, Madrid and Mexico City are also considering restrictions.
In addition to the automotive fund, there have been calls for a Clean Air Act to “enshrine the right to clean air in UK law” and a national air quality support programme for councils.
Mike Hawes, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, said latest government reports show there have been improvements in air quality but he accepted that “more needs to be done”.
He went on: “Road transport is a major contributor which is why the UK automotive industry is investing billions in technology and other measures to help address the challenge.
“We should not divert investment away from the development of new, low emission vehicles as the fastest improvement to air quality in our towns and cities will be through the uptake of the latest technology.”

Pollution emitted by cars can cause respiratory issues
A Government spokesman said: “By ending the sale of conventional new diesel and petrol cars and vans from 2040, the UK is going further than almost every other European nation.
“Air pollution has improved significantly since 2010, but we recognise there is more to do which is why we have a £3.5billion plan to reduce harmful emissions. We will set out further actions through a comprehensive clean air strategy later this year.
“We will carefully consider the joint committee’s report and respond in due course.”
Rosie Rogers, clean air campaigner at Greenpeace, called on the ban to be implemented by 2030 at the latest.
She said: “We now know diesel is toxic so there can be no more excuses and no more delays.
“The Government must prioritise public health and bring forward its phase-out date by at least 10 years.
“Other countries have managed it, and people who live in the UK deserve clean air just as much.”
Martin Tett, environment spokesman at the Local Government Association, said: “The 2040 target set by the Government for the end of the sale of conventionally-fuelled vehicles is too far away to tackle a public health problem that is shortening lives now.
“It cannot overlook the immediate measures that could have drastic improvements on public health in areas where air quality problems are at their most severe.”
Alison Cook, director of policy at the British Lung Foundation, said diesel is an “invisible danger” and “the sooner these vehicles are off our roads the healthier we will all be”.
All the effort you put into studying at university may not have been enough – because robots could be coming for your job. A new study found that as many as 800 million workers could be replaced by technology by 2030.
The study from the McKinsey Global Institute, the research arm of the economic think tank McKinsey & Company, estimates that “between 400 million and 800 million individuals could be displaced by automation and need to find new jobs by 2030 around the world.” It estimates that between zero and 30 percent of the hours currently worked globally could be automated by that time.
Those most affected will be people who work in “predictable environments” doing tasks such as operating machinery and preparing fast food. Those who make a living collecting and processing data also face a high risk of being rendered redundant by technology.
People who work in less predictable environments such as gardeners, plumbers, and childcare staff face a smaller risk, because their roles are “technically difficult to automate and often command relatively lower wages, which makes automation a less attractive business proposition.”
However, it’s not all doom and gloom for the future of employment. The study noted that automation sometimes allows workers to remain employed in a different capacity. “Even when some tasks are automated, employment in those occupations may not decline but rather workers may perform new tasks,” McKinsey & Company wrote in a release on its website.
However, workers may need to “shift occupational categories” and “learn new skills” in order to participate in any new jobs. “Of the total [400 million to 800 million] displaced, 75 million to 375 million may need to switch occupational categories and learn new skills,” the release states.
It noted that China has the largest number of employees who would need to switch occupations, up to 100 million if automation is adopted rapidly, or 12 percent of the 2030 workforce. The numbers are higher in more advanced economies, with up to one-third of the 2030 workforce in the US and Germany needing to switch occupations, along with nearly half of Japan. Countries which fail to prepare workers to transition to new jobs will feel the impact through a rise in unemployment and depressed wages, according to the study.
The study acknowledges a growing concern that there will not be enough jobs for workers due to automation. However, it notes that those fears may be “unfounded,” citing historical trends. “Over time, labor markets adjust to changes in demand for workers from technological disruptions, although at times with depressed real wages.” It goes on to conclude that adequate job creation can take place to offset automation “with significant economic growth, innovation, and investment.”
Established in 1990, the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) examines industry trends “to better understand the broad macroeconomic forces affecting business strategy and public policy,” according to its website. It aims to provide industry leaders with facts and insight on which they can base management and policy decisions.

Saudi’s headlines keep rolling in. Saudi Arabia is deepening its ties with Russia, with billions of investments planned for the future. Saudi Arabia is going to allow women to drive. Saudi Arabia booked a second quarterly GDP contraction in a row, with non-oil revenues particularly worrying. Saudi Arabia is also going ahead with the Aramco listing in the second half of 2017, despite reports of a possible delay.
The Kingdom has certainly been making a lot of headlines recently and so have analysts from various institutions, either praising the effect that the OPEC/Russia oil output cut agreement is having on prices, or warning the cartel and its de facto leader that they should change their strategy.
Now a new warning has come from the global head of sovereign ratings at Fitch, James McCormack. When countries “kick-start reform programs when oil prices are low, sometimes the enthusiasm wanes when commodity prices move higher. That is potentially a risk here. It will take continued focus on discipline to maintain many of those initiatives with higher oil prices,” McCormack told media in Riyadh.
That’s more a reminder than a new threat. There have been rare voices wondering if the Saudis will resist the siren song of higher oil prices and maintain the discipline necessary to really implement the ambitious diversification program, which, is not the first of its kind. There was an older one called Vision 2024, which somehow got shelved amid…. well, higher oil prices.
Judging by the current economic situation in the Kingdom, there is ground for doubts. The latest GDP figures revealed a 1.03-percent GDP contraction on an annual basis in the second quarter of the year, following a 0.5-percent shrinking in the first quarter of the year. What’s more worrying, however, is that while oil revenues contracted, by 1.8 percent, which was to be expected, non-oil revenues grew only moderately, by 0.6 percent. This clearly means that the Saudi economy has a very long way to go before non-oil industries can offset the revenues that oil generates.
Another worrying sign came earlier this year, when the government in Riyadh decided to roll back some austerity measures concerning the salaries and bonuses of public servants. The decision came on the back of recovering oil prices, when OPEC and Russia decided to extend their production cut agreement. This rollback suggested that the Saudis might find it hard to resist another temptation of the same kind: it’s all too easy for Saudi Arabia to keep going in the rut dug over decades than it is to venture into a new direction and start from scratch.
True, Saudi Arabia has announced renewable power tenders as part of its move away from oil, and just yesterday it struck an arms production deal with Russia, in addition to expanding its global footprint in petrochemicals with billions in investments. But that won’t be enough—it’s only the start. The main work will need the billions expected from Aramco’s IPO. And for this IPO to bring in these billions, crude oil prices need to remain higher.
The situation of Saudi Arabia now is kind of similar to a junkie trying to kick a habit, but needing money to do it – money that can only come from the sale of drugs to other junkies. Oil is, after all, as Chicago so aptly put it, a hard habit to break. There is the constant temptation of slipping back into the old habit, and too often it proves too strong. One can only hope that the decision-makers in Riyadh are hearing what McCormack, Goldman Sachs’ Lloyd Blankfein and others are saying.

TOKYO (Reuters) – Mazda plans to make its vehicle models electric-based, including petrol hybrids, by the early 2030s, Japan’s Kyodo News reported on Friday.
A Mazda spokeswoman declined to comment on the report.
Mazda does not sell any all-battery electric vehicles at the moment, however, it markets a hybrid model.
Last month, the auto manufacturer said it has developed an ultra-efficient petrol engine, which can be used in hybrid models, and plans to incorporate that in its cars from 2019 onwards.

First Volvo did it. Then Jaguar Land Rover did it. On Monday, Volkswagen Group signed up. On the eve of the Frankfurt Auto Show, VW Group chairman Matthias Müller committed his company to electrifying its entire lineup by 2030. “The transformation in our industry is unstoppable. And we will lead that transformation,” he said.
Like Volvo and Jaguar Land Rover, VW Group is pledging to have an electric version of each of its new models available; it is not promising that it will build only electric and hybrid vehicles. But the 12 brands under the VW Group umbrella collectively sell many more cars than either Sweden’s Volvo or Britain’s Jag, so we are still talking about an awful lot of EVs.
In fact, Müller says there will be 80 new electric vehicles by 2030, plus 30 plug-in hybrids and 50 battery EVs. Expect to see an EV in every segment—electric supercars from Lamborghini and EV superminis from Seat—as well as EVs for sale in every one of VW Group’s markets around the world.
