Iran. Those who visit tend to love it, but for many, it’s become synonymous with travel bans, cultural restrictions, poor human rights and high security. But what’s it like to travel there? Here’s what featured contributor Leon McCarron says.

In late winter of 2014, my friend Tom Allen and I flew from London to the Iranian capital of Tehran, then traveled onwards to the ancient city of Esfahan by bus. Under one of the 33 arches of Si-o-se-pol—the largest and most beautiful of the major bridges across the Zayanderud river—we met our friend Saeid, who drove us high into the Zagros mountains.

He left us where the road ended, and we walked on, alongside a small trickle of water buttressed on both sides by deep snow. A few hours later, at around 3,500 meters, we stopped where the water too halted; or perhaps more accurately, where it began.

It’s this spring that gave birth to the Karun, the longest river in Iran and the natural highway that Tom and I would follow for five weeks, on foot and by kayak, until we reached the Persian Gulf. And so, we began the journey south, into a blizzard and, for me, very much into the unknown.

After many years of international sanctions, which have squeezed the Iranian economy almost to breaking point, there was something of a rapprochement under the recent presidency of Hassan Rouhani. This resulted in the much-feted “Nuclear Deal’ of 2015/16, in which Iran agreed to reign in nuclear activity in return for an easing of economic sanctions.

Any progress on that front, however, was rolled back in summer 2018 when President Trump, after months of rhetoric, eventually pulled out of the Obama-era agreement. Coupled with Trump’s much criticized ‘travel ban,’ which has also been labeled a ‘Muslim ban’ for the fact that it primarily targets Muslim-majority countries, we’re back to a situation where diplomatic relations are as strained as ever.

And as a result of the new sanctions imposed by the US on Iran, British Airways and a host of other European carriers put a halt on their direct flights to Tehran. The movement of people to and from the west is as tricky now as ever.

For non-British Europeans, it’s still relatively easy to get visas, and to travel via indirect flights through Istanbul or Kiev or elsewhere. If we do visit, we can expect things on the ground to remain much the same as before.

It’s almost a cliché by now, but Iranians are perhaps the friendliest people in the world, and just about anyone that has been will testify enthusiastically to this. One does have to be respectful, as always in such a conservative Islamic society. Women should cover their head and wear loose clothing, and men should avoid shorts. Alcohol is out of the question, and conversations about religion generally best avoided with strangers.

There are police—and secret police—everywhere, but if you’re following the rules and simply touring around, you’ll have no issues. Iran is not a dangerous place as such—rates of petty crime are extremely low, and the risk of a terrorist attack is much less than in major European cities like Paris and London.

And let’s not forget this is truly a remarkable country; inimitably rich in history and natural beauty, and home to some of the oldest civilizations on earth. All those places that you’ve heard about—Persepolis and Shiraz, the mosques of Esfahan, the Silk Road, the desert city of Yazd, the ski slopes of the Alborz and the otherworldiness of Qeshm island—they’re absolutely worth the hype.

Had I listened to the advice of the UK Foreign Office, I would never have gone to follow the river Karun. I’ve written elsewhere about the inherent importance of these government bodies (FCO, State Department and equivalents), but they also deal in generalizations, and nuances get lost. The challenges posed by a visit to Iran now, even for Americans and Brits, is still more logistical than anything else.

The best memories of my travels in Iran are from the time spent with Iranians, on the streets and in their homes. The film that Tom and I made was designed as our offering to the canon of alternative narratives from the country; adding much-needed humanity to a much-demonized country. Four years later, and in the current global climate, such storytelling seems even more important. If you look beyond the politics, deep into the heart of Iran, you find a very special place indeed.

George Clooney is 2018’s Highest-Paid Actor, And He Didn’t Even Make a Movie https://briefnews.eu/george-clooney-is-2018s-highest-paid-actor-and-he-didnt-even-make-a-movie/ https://briefnews.eu/george-clooney-is-2018s-highest-paid-actor-and-he-didnt-even-make-a-movie/#respond Sun, 26 Aug 2018 17:18:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/george-clooney-is-2018s-highest-paid-actor-and-he-didnt-even-make-a-movie/ highest paid actor of 2018

It used to be that the biggest movie star with the best-performing movie would be guaranteed the top spot in Forbes‘ list of highest paid actors. But times, they are a-changin’, as the highest paid actor of 2018 didn’t even star in a movie last year, and several of the top spots went to actors who worked exclusively with streaming.

George Clooney has been named the highest paid actor of 2018, raking in $ 239 million from June 2017 to June 2018. And it’s all thanks to tequila.

According to the Forbes World’s Highest-Paid Actor list for 2018, George Clooney managed to edge out Dwayne Johnson for the top spot, despite not appearing in any major movies. So how did he manage to make a pre-tax income of $ 239 million?  *Drum beat* Tequila!

Clooney sold his liquor company, Casamigos Tequila, for up to $ 1 billion last year, handing the Money Monster actor a nice, fat paycheck that guaranteed that he didn’t need to star in a movie in between attending the royal wedding and directing the 2017 flop Suburbicon (which was completed before the window of time that Forbes surveyed for its 2018 list).

Clooney’s career-high earnings pushed out Johnson for the top spot, who many predicted would get the title this year if just for the man’s manic work ethic, which saw him starring in a whopping five (!) movies in the last year including the insanely successful Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. But Johnson did nab the No. 2 spot, raking in $ 124 million pretax. Unexpectedly, Johnson’s massive social media following was also credited for his high placement, allowing him to “negotiate an extra seven figures atop his standard contract for promotion, helping nearly double his 2017 earnings.” If the historic Red Notice bidding war is any indication, Johnson’s hot streak will continue into 2018 too.

Robert Downey Jr. takes the No. 3 spot with $ 81 million while his Avengers: Infinity War co-star Chris Hemsworth‘s $ 64.5 million scored him No. 4 (no other Chris can beat the Marvel two-punch of Thor: Ragnarok and Infinity War). Meanwhile, Jackie Chan rounds out the top 5 with $ 45.5 million, proving that the Chinese box office is nothing to sneeze at. International stars Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan also take spots in the top 10.

Interestingly, two of the higher slots in the list, Adam Sandler (No. 8) and Will Smith (No. 6) didn’t appear in major movies last year either — at least, that were released in theaters. Both Sandler and Smith reaped the lucrative benefits of partnering with Netflix, which gave them massive paydays for films like Sandy Wexler and Bright, respectively. This could be the beginning of Netflix becoming a major force on the Forbes’ list, as more people choose the couch over the theater. Except for the ongoing disparity between Hollywood’s top-paid actresses and actors, times are a-changin’ indeed.

‘The Meg’, ‘Rampage’ and the Problem With 2018’s Giant Monster Movies https://briefnews.eu/the-meg-rampage-and-the-problem-with-2018s-giant-monster-movies/ https://briefnews.eu/the-meg-rampage-and-the-problem-with-2018s-giant-monster-movies/#respond Mon, 13 Aug 2018 15:24:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-meg-rampage-and-the-problem-with-2018s-giant-monster-movies/ the meg tv spot

A couple of times this year at the movies, I’ve found myself thinking about one of the great lines from one of the great movies about the movies. “Wallace Beery! Wrestling picture! Whaddya need, a road map?” So goes the snappy one-liner from Michael Lerner’s cynical studio executive in the Joel and Ethan Coen masterpiece Barton Fink, and so it echoed in my head as I sat, disappointed, through two different-but-not-exactly genre films.

In April, the film was Rampage. Last week, the movie was The Meg. I left the film feeling a bit like Lerner’s character, chastising the pretentious Barton Fink. These movies should not have needed the road maps.

It’s easy, by which I mean “lazy,” to paint critics as being humorless scolds who are either unwilling or unable to meet a movie on its own terms. If a critic takes to task a genre picture like The Meg, you might hear a fan (or sometimes people involved in the production) suggesting “Well, what do you expect? It’s not trying to be Citizen Kane.” (Feel free to fill in the blank with another prestigious title if the 1941 film doesn’t float your boat.) It’s easy and lazy because critics such as myself – brace yourself for this shock – tend to like things that are fun. We’re only a couple weeks removed from the genuinely wonderful Mission: Impossible – Fallout, a movie that’s about as fun of an action blockbuster as they come.

When I walked into both Rampage and The Meg, I went in expecting a movie like what was promised in the ads. The former film features Dwayne Johnson and a modern-day King Kong; the latter film features Jason Statham facing off against a mammoth shark and the tagline “Pleased to Eat You”. Not only did I walk into each screening expecting movies exactly as gleefully ridiculous as what was promised, but I wanted badly to enjoy them. (Not that this should have to be said, but critics also tend to want to enjoy the movies they see, because otherwise, they’ve wasted a perfectly good two hours on a bad movie.)

The Meg, especially, felt like it could benefit from the unspoken knowledge of what being an August release means. While the so-called summer movie season goes well past the actual summer these days, August is usually not a time for marquee releases. Films like The Meg can capitalize on good timing – the recent Shark Week – and people’s desire to spend a couple hours away from the house and in air conditioning. Plus, Warner Bros. Pictures, which coincidentally released both Rampage and The Meg, has its own cult shark movie in Deep Blue Sea. The Meg could have been Deep Blue Sea 2.0. That would have been great. If only.

Rampage Honest Trailer

And Rampage could have been a truly goofy take on an old-school video game. The ads for both of these movies suggest at least one thing: WB’s marketing department has a really good handle on what people want from these kinds of movies. It’s not enough for films like Rampage and The Meg to have goofy premises. They have to acknowledge how stupidly ridiculous the setups are. The ads for these movies, essentially, were self-aware, but the films don’t have nearly so much self-awareness to survive. There’s a reason why dialogue like “…Of course the wolf flies” shows up in the ads for Rampage. It’s funny. It’s funny because someone – Dwayne Johnson, or the writers, or someone else – understood that you have to have dialogue like this with such inherently silly plots.

But there’s not enough self-awareness in either of these films, just a couple of tossed-off lines of dialogue from the hero briefly acknowledging how crazy their predicaments are. They make for good moments in a trailer, but neither Rampage nor The Meg have enough of those moments in full. Rampage is slightly more successful, if only because enough of the people on camera understood exactly what they signed up for.

For example: Jake Lacy (who I still know best as that one salesman nicknamed Plop on the final season of The Office) plays the boneheaded, preppie/loony brother of the true mastermind behind the pathogen that makes a trio of animals into city-destructing giants in Rampage. Lacy delivers the kind of performance that goes over the top and lands on the other side. He seems to grasp exactly how goofy this film is, and modulated his performance to match. It’s notable primarily because, unfortunately, no one else in the film is willing to join him, thus making his performance singular in good and bad ways. In retrospect, I wish the rest of the cast joined him in his play to be super-campy. But being the only one has its downsides.

The Meg Reviews

The Meg has a number of moments that feel as those they were tailor-made to be hammered home in the marketing, moments that suggest a truly campy film. There is the shot when the thought-extinct megalodon shark tries to chomp down on very thick glass in an underwater outpost, facing off against a little girl who watches in horror. And the film’s climax features Jason Statham treating the underwater shuttle he’s driving like an X-Wing Fighter as he evades the eponymous shark. But those are two moments in a 113-minute movie that feels a lot longer, and is weirdly bloodless for a film about a killer shark.

Both Johnson and Statham are capable of toplining movies as goofy as these. Frankly, their presence is part of what makes these films so potentially intriguing, in the same way that last month’s Dwayne Johnson movie, Skyscraper, could have been exciting. Dwayne Johnson in a supercharged Die Hard! What’s not to like? Unfortunately, a lot, as Johnson’s heroic character has no genuine flaws, just a prosthetic leg that feels like it exists because otherwise, it’d be a movie where the physically imposing and dominant Johnson saves the day with little to no pushback. (And Skyscraper may actually invoke the word “family” more than the Fast and Furious movies, which is saying something.)

Rampage Trailer - Dwayne Johnson

We’re over a decade removed from a movie that feels like it was the Patient Zero for films like Rampage and The Meg – Snakes on a Plane. That film had three selling points: the title, Samuel L. Jackson, and that R-rated line of dialogue. Rampage and The Meg both had big names above the title, an easy and ridiculous elevator pitch, and very little else. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are both charismatic performers, just as Samuel L. Jackson is. But if you put any of these men in a story that feels like an escapee from the SyFy Movie of the Week, all it feels like is that these guys are slumming for a paycheck. At least films like Deep Blue Sea – co-starring Jackson, of course – tried to have some level of wit and intelligence amidst the cheese.

Exclusive ‘The Endless’ Clip: A Strange Taste of One of 2018’s Best Horror Movies https://briefnews.eu/exclusive-the-endless-clip-a-strange-taste-of-one-of-2018s-best-horror-movies/ https://briefnews.eu/exclusive-the-endless-clip-a-strange-taste-of-one-of-2018s-best-horror-movies/#respond Mon, 09 Apr 2018 20:13:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/exclusive-the-endless-clip-a-strange-taste-of-one-of-2018s-best-horror-movies/ the endless clip

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are two of the most interesting and inquisitive voices echoing throughout today’s cinematic landscape, and their latest title The Endless showcases precisely why. Two creators likened to disciples of Richard Linklater and H.P. Lovecraft – even if they haven’t read Lovecraft or watched Linklater – blazing a dialogue-driven trail of twisty genre exploration. Theirs is a style that’s cerebral and striking in ways others have fumbled clumsily, ponderous but still so engagingly addictive. Resolution rocks, Spring rolls and The Endless shows no slowing of momentum.

With that said, it’s our honor to debut a new clip from The Endless that spoons an ominous taste of what to expect from their third release.

The Endless Clip

Jamie Righetti reviewed Benson and Moorhead’s latest for /Film when it premiered last year at the Tribeca Film Festival, heaping on equal praise:

“I could simply begin and end this review with one simple phrase: what are you waiting for? But let me explain. The Endless isn’t just terrific – it’s poised to be that breakout genre hit that It Follows and The Babadook were in past years. This isn’t just hype. The film is sharply written, smart and funny. It’s tense and uncertain at moments, but it’s not overtly scary, which actually works in its favor. There’s no pressure to deliver big scares and there’s no let down when it doesn’t and it allows the film to just be really good.”

Agreed.

I chose this specific clip to premiere because of how well a mere two minutes summarizes the tone and feel of 2018’s newest cult oddity. Camp Arcadia is a place of comfort for some, but to Justin and Aaron, their memories of being one with the commune come rushing back doubled with thick layers of doubt. Men searching for answers and purpose, tricks of the mind playing dead-weighted constants. A tug-of-war with the night’s sky is one of many talking points you’ll raise after the credits roll, so if this clip sparks your curiosity, there’s plenty more surprises in store.

In addition to serving at the film’s co-directors, Benson and Moorhead also star as brothers Justin and Aaron in a continuation of their characters from the film Resolution. Benson gets the writing credit and Moorhead served as the film’s cinematographer, and I’m sure they also supplied craft services too. Also featured on the cast are Callie Hernandez, Lew Temple, Tate Ellington, Kira Powell, and Shane Brady.

The Endless is already out in New York City and Los Angeles, and will be expanding wider in the coming weeks.

‘Sorry to Bother You’ Trailer: All Hail One of 2018’s Strangest (and Best) Films https://briefnews.eu/sorry-to-bother-you-trailer-all-hail-one-of-2018s-strangest-and-best-films/ https://briefnews.eu/sorry-to-bother-you-trailer-all-hail-one-of-2018s-strangest-and-best-films/#respond Sun, 11 Mar 2018 23:54:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sorry-to-bother-you-trailer-all-hail-one-of-2018s-strangest-and-best-films/ Sorry to Bother You trailer

You may think you’re ready to see Boots Riley‘s sensational Sorry to Bother You. But I assure you, you are not ready for some of the bizarre ideas and off-the-wall imagery this film has in store for you. Annapurna Pictures wisely scooped up Riley’s much-discussed debut movie after it premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and now they’ve released the first Sorry to Bother You trailer. Strap in, because things are about to get weird.

Sorry to Bother You Trailer

Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta) plays Cassius Green, a lackadaisical telemarketer who realizes he has the power to speak with a “white voice” (played by Arrested Development‘s David Cross). Armed with this new skill, Cassius (aka “Cash”) becomes a rising star at his company – much to the chagrin of his activist girlfriend, Detroit (Tessa Thompson). At the top of the corporate ladder, Cash encounters the over-the-top personality of Steve Lift (Armie Hammer), a coke-snorting CEO who has a few disturbing secrets of his own. The film itself is hilarious, fanciful, occasionally unsettling, creepy, and most importantly, a searing social satire that actually makes you think. And at the risk of overhyping it, this is more than just a movie: it’s a true piece of art.

Here’s an excerpt from my Sundance review, which refers to the movie as “a mind-bending story that’s overflowing with WTF moments”:

There’s a lot going on here: it’s a story about pushing back against corporate greed, about the sacrifices we’re willing to make for money, and about things getting so nuts that we end up just accepting it as our new normal. (That last aspect feels especially relevant in our current political climate, even though Riley wrote an earlier version of this story years before the chaos of the Trump administration.) But ultimately, this is a story about the sickening feeling of commodification – the commodification of black people, specifically, but the scope widens even further as the extent of Steve Lift’s master plan becomes clear.

I can say with confidence and without hesitation that you’ve never seen anything like this before. That originality is bursting forth in nearly every frame of this film, immediately marking writer/director Boots Riley as a filmmaker to watch very closely in the years to come. I’m so excited for you all to see this movie.

Sorry to Bother You is currently slated to hit theaters on July 6, 2018.
