Presenters Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway returned to Good Morning Britain today alongside news reporter Charlotte Hawkins for the latest edition of the ITV programme.

Appearing via video link, Jo was eager to put her point across after being made the new leader of the Liberal Democrat party, and all her attentions have turned to Brexit.

“I totally accept that there are differences of opinion and strong views on this issue,” she began. “And I’m standing up for what I believe is right, for what I think is the UK’s best future, which is within the European Union.

“I’m not going to stop arguing for what I believe in.”

“And I think what we’re proposing here is fundamentally a democratic exercise,” the party member continued. “It is to have a peoples’ vote on the specific Brexit deal, because there was no specific Brexit deal in 2016.

“‘Brexit means Brexit’ was the meaningless phrase that we heard in the aftermath of the referendum and even now, three years on, the Brexiteers can’t agree on what Brexit means.”

Swinson’s claims were founded on the idea the people voting on whether to remain or leave the European Union in 2016 didn’t really “know” what they were voting for – as it was very early in the process.

Former Prime Minister Theresa May didn’t begin negotiating with the EU until after the vote was revealed.

“I don’t have any confidence that the majority in the United Kingdom [are] for any specific form of Brexit,” the guest went on.

“You’ve got people who say they couldn’t possibly have Theresa May’s deal they’d rather stay in the EU. And you’ve got others who say they don’t want a hard or no deal Brexit.

“So if we don’t have confidence that there’s a majority for any specific Brexit, how could we possibly go ahead with that course of action without checking with the British people first?” Swinson added.

Taking to Twitter however, viewers shared their feelings over the politician’s comments, with many confused and insisting they did know what they were voting for.

“Who voted in 2016? Weren’t they people then???” one frustrated person asked.

Another offered: “We had a people’s vote, it’s just that people like this woman only want democracy as long as any result suits them.”

“Your opinion is meaningless and goes against the democratic will of everyone in the UK,” a third slammed. “Losers of a referendum must accept the majority view or we lose democracy – that which holds this country together.”

A fourth accused: “Why would she respect the result of another vote, she doesn’t respect the last one. Why can’t she just be honest and say she wants to stay in the EU Empire.”

“The people already voted we voted Brexit so get over it and get on with it,” a fifth ordered.

And another exclaimed: “It’s not about what YOU want or what YOU think is best…..It’s what the COUNTRY voted for!”

Trump-Russia dossier was created so Clinton could challenge 2016 election results – Steele https://briefnews.eu/trump-russia-dossier-was-created-so-clinton-could-challenge-2016-election-results-steele/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-russia-dossier-was-created-so-clinton-could-challenge-2016-election-results-steele/#respond Tue, 18 Dec 2018 14:10:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-russia-dossier-was-created-so-clinton-could-challenge-2016-election-results-steele/

The British ex-spy who authored the infamous dossier alleging collusion between Donald Trump and the Kremlin said one of his goals was to give Hillary Clinton legal basis to challenge the 2016 election results.

Christopher Steele’s salacious 17-page report was commissioned by Fusion GPS, a firm connected to Clinton’s campaign.

“Based on that advice, parties such as the Democratic National Committee and HFACC Inc. (also known as ‘Hillary for America’) could consider steps they would be legally entitled to take to challenge the validity of the outcome of that election,” Steele wrote in recently unsealed declaration that was published by the Washington Times.

His statement is part of a series of answers which Steele provided in a defamation suit brought by three Russians who head Alfa Bank, who were named in the dossier as part of the alleged collusion conspiracy between Trump and the Kremlin.

The court challenge never came. Instead, the unsubstantiated dossier was leaked to news outlets such as BuzzFeed, fuelling Russiagate hysteria and serving as the backbone of a two-year probe that has yet to corroborate any of the document’s core claims. The document was also used by the FBI to obtain a warrant to spy on former Trump aide Carter Page, who was accused by Steele of meeting secretly with Kremlin insiders in Moscow. Incredibly, former FBI Director James Comey admitted that his agency had not verified the dossier’s contents before using it to justify the warrant.
The dossier itself has apparently fallen out of favor with many of its early champions: One of the first journalists to report on Steele’s research has stated that many of Steele’s central claims have yet to be substantiated and are “likely false.”

The defamation case against Steele was dismissed by a DC Superior Court judge, but lawyers representing the Russian bankers have launched an appeal in US District court, attaching Steele’s revelatory statements as part of their filing. Steele faces similar legal trouble in London, where he is being sued for defamation by Russian entrepreneur Aleksej Gubarev. In one of his memos, Steele accused Gubarev of personally hacking DNC computers. Gubarev has also sued BuzzFeed for publishing the unverified claim as part of its uncritical coverage of the dossier.

Clinton bots more talkative & influential than Trump bots around 2016 debates, study finds https://briefnews.eu/clinton-bots-more-talkative-influential-than-trump-bots-around-2016-debates-study-finds/ https://briefnews.eu/clinton-bots-more-talkative-influential-than-trump-bots-around-2016-debates-study-finds/#respond Tue, 06 Nov 2018 08:46:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/clinton-bots-more-talkative-influential-than-trump-bots-around-2016-debates-study-finds/

While the popular narrative blames Clinton’s 2016 electoral loss on (Russian) bots, they actually helped her chances, according to a new study finding pro-Clinton bots were more effective at influencing voters than pro-Trump ones.

While there were almost twice as many pro-Trump bots in operation before the 2016 election, the pro-Clinton bots were much more likely to change people’s political opinions because they were much more active, MIT researcher Tauhid Zaman discovered.

Zaman analyzed 2.3 million tweets referencing the second presidential debate and found less than one percent of the accounts involved were bots. He measured the real users’ opinions using two models – one based on their tweets and one on their network of connections – and then remeasured without the inclusion of the bots in the networks. To his surprise (he’s a registered Democrat, according to a disclosure statement that accompanied the study) the average level of support for Clinton dropped from 58 to 42.

The Clinton bots, it turned out, were able to exercise such an outsize influence on their networks because they tweeted on average 1.5 times as often as the Trump bots. The content of the bots’ tweets was roughly the same – retweets of the candidates or other influential users – but the quantity of those retweets had a definite effect.

Zaman cautioned that the results could not be extrapolated to the entire voting population – the research only dealt with a short period of time surrounding the debates and studied a relatively small sample of Twitter users. Still, those in charge of social media “outreach” for candidates can learn a lot from this information – if you’re going to fake a following, fake an enthusiastic following!

While Zaman’s research showed Trump had a higher rate of support among bots, a 2015 analysis using the tool TwitterAudit found Clinton had more fake followers – 41 percent of her total Twitter fans.

The Russian connection? Banned Facebook pages were featured on 2016 ‘blacklist’ https://briefnews.eu/the-russian-connection-banned-facebook-pages-were-featured-on-2016-blacklist/ https://briefnews.eu/the-russian-connection-banned-facebook-pages-were-featured-on-2016-blacklist/#respond Mon, 15 Oct 2018 15:03:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-russian-connection-banned-facebook-pages-were-featured-on-2016-blacklist/

A host of alternative news pages banned by Facebook last week were first featured on the PropOrNot blacklist in 2016 – a list of “Russian propaganda” sites that was compiled with little evidence and called “McCarthyite.”

Facebook banned 800 alternative media pages last week, ranging from left-leaning organizations like The Anti-Media to flag-waving opinion sites like Right Wing News and Nation in Distress. Others include those belonging to police brutality watchdog groups Filming Cops and Policing the Police. Twitter followed suit and banned many accounts associated with the same groups.

The social media giant said the pages were banned for “coordinated inauthentic behavior,” and, disturbingly, the company said in a blog post that it is working hard to root out pages, groups, and accounts “created to stir up political debate,” ahead of next month’s midterm elections in the US.

However, in deciding which pages to ban, it seems that Facebook drew some inspiration from a ‘blacklist’ released after the US presidential election in 2016, when Russian hysteria was beginning to take off.

The ‘PropOrNot’ list was published anonymously in November 2016, and claimed to offer a comprehensive rundown of “Sites That Reliably Echo Russian Propaganda.” PropOrNot’s anonymous team did not explain its methods, or what criteria made a site ‘Russian propaganda’, but the Washington Post still ran a glowing feature on the site, which the paper said opposed “Russia’s increasingly sophisticated propaganda machinery.”

PropOrNot’s list was described by journalist Glenn Greenwald as a “McCarthyite blacklist” compiled by “anonymous cowards.” Harper’s editor Andrew Cockburn called the Washington Post’s article on it “a sorry piece of trash,” while Rolling Stone’s Matt Taibbi called it “shameful and disgusting.”

All three journalists slammed the Washington Post for not properly investigating PropOrNot’s “shady” fact-checking process, and concluded that all the sites on the list really had in common was vague opposition to centrist, Hillary Clinton-style foreign policy.

Many of the pages banned last Thursday were named on PropOrNot’s list. While Facebook has not said whether it drew inspiration from PropOrNot, its sweeping ban was cheered by Russophobic list-lovers, who thanked Facebook and Twitter “for refusing to let Putin’s brutally corrupt mafia-fascist dictatorship use their platforms.”

While PropOrNot has been widely discredited, Facebook has teamed up with another third-party fact-checker of dubious motive. The Digital Forensics Lab is an offshoot of NATO-funded think tank The Atlantic Council, and has pledged to be Facebook’s “eyes and ears” in the fight against disinformation (read: alternative viewpoints).

In announcing the partnership in May, the DFL said it would strive to “expose and explain falsehood online,” and crack down on ‘Russian bots’ manipulating discussion. In reality, the crackdown has focused on left-leaning and alternative news sites, and has been called part of “a wider war on dissident narratives in online media” by journalist Max Blumenthal.

  • Trump-backed Republican Troy Balderson held a narrow lead over Democratic insurgent Danny O’Connor in Ohio’s 12th District special election on Tuesday night, leading the race by nearly 1,800 ballots.
  • A victory for Balderson was not unexpected in the deep-red district where Donald Trump won by 11 points in the 2016 presidential election, but the narrow margin is seen as a positive sign for Democrats who are working to reclaim a majority in one or both houses of Congress in November.
  • In the meantime, Balderson is expected to take the House seat abandoned by Republican Rep. Pat Tiberi, who announced his resignation in October, midway through his term.
  • Balderson and O’Connor will face each other again in the general election, November 6.

Trump-backed Republican Sen. Troy Balderson held a narrow lead over his Democratic challenger, Danny O’Connor in Tuesday night’s special election in Ohio’s 12th congressional district. With 100% of precincts reporting, Balderson led the race by nearly 1,800 ballots, in a deep-red district that Donald Trump won by 11 points in the 2016 presidential election.

Balderson is expected to take the House seat abandoned by Republican Rep. Pat Tiberi, who announced his resignation in October, midway through his term.

Trump says 'Russia is very unhappy' he won in 2016, but he still gets along 'great' with Putin https://briefnews.eu/trump-says-russia-is-very-unhappy-he-won-in-2016-but-he-still-gets-along-great-with-putin/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-says-russia-is-very-unhappy-he-won-in-2016-but-he-still-gets-along-great-with-putin/#respond Fri, 03 Aug 2018 06:44:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-says-russia-is-very-unhappy-he-won-in-2016-but-he-still-gets-along-great-with-putin/ US President Donald Trump has claimed that Moscow regrets he had won the presidential elections, citing the expulsion of diplomats and his scorn of a Russian gas pipeline to Germany as proof of his tough stance on Russia.

Trump was speaking at a ‘Make America Great Again’ rally in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to support Rep. Lou Barletta in his race for Senate, when he dived into one of his most recurrent topics – the contentious Helsinki meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and how unfairly it was treated by the media. In the wake of the summit, labeled “disastrous” by the mainstream media, Trump was accused of cozying up to Putin while defying his own intelligence community.

“In Helsinki, I had a great meeting with Putin, we discussed everything,” Trump said at the rally, to a round of applause from the cheering crowd.

“We got along really well. By the way, that’s a good thing, not a bad thing, that’s really good,” he added, before blaming the lingering Russiagate probe for standing in the way of further progress.

“Now, we are being hindered by the Russian hoax, it’s a hoax,” he said.

In the days immediately following the Helsinki summit, Trump famously corrected himself, claiming he misspoke when he’d said he didn’t see any reason why it “would” be Russia which meddled in the elections. Instead, he said he meant to say “wouldn’t.” Meddle or not, though, Russia isn’t thrilled by how it all turned out, the US President told the rally.

“I’ll tell you what, Russia is very unhappy that Trump won, that I can tell you. But I got along great with Putin,” Trump said. That was exactly what was wrong with the Helsinki summit, according to establishment media and politicians.

“They wanted to see a boxing match… I said whatever happened to diplomacy?” he said. Trump has admitted he had little chance of pleasing the media, whatever tone he chose with Putin.

“And let me tell you: If I did go up and start screaming they would have said: ‘he was terrible’, ‘he was so rude’, ‘it was horrible’, ‘his performance was horrible,'” Trump said, arguing that in deed, not word, he was much harder on Russia than any of his predecessors.

“I was the one that let out 60 diplomats, I was the one that complained about the fact that Germany has been paying [Russia] billions of dollars for a ridiculous pipeline coming to Germany,” he said, referring to Nord Stream 2, which would supply Germany with Russian gas through a pipeline running under the Baltic Sea.

At a NATO summit in July, Trump took aim at the project alleging it is making Germany “a captive of Russia.”

It’s not the first time Trump attempts to persuade American voters that Russia perceives him not as its asset in the White House, as claimed by the Russiagaters, but rather as a threat.

Last Tuesday Trump tweeted that, since “no President has been tougher on Russia than me,” Moscow “will be pushing very hard for the Democrats” in the upcoming midterm elections.

  • Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen backed up US intelligence findings on interference in the 2016 US presidential election Tuesday, saying “it was the Russians.”
  • Speaking at a cybersecurity conference, Nielsen offered a sharp condemnation of Russian hacking and cybersecurity threats as a chief concern of the department.
  • Nielsen’s comments come two weeks after President Donald Trump earned harsh blowback for failing to hold Russia accountable for election interference at a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen backed up US intelligence findings on interference in the 2016 US presidential election Tuesday, saying “it was the Russians.”

Nielsen was speaking at the department’s Cybersecurity Summit in New York when she warned about the threat of cyber attacks, which she said put “our democracy itself in the crosshairs.”

  • Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney, says Trump knew in advance that senior campaign officials planned to meet with a Kremlin-linked lawyer offering dirt on Hillary Clinton at the height of the election, CNN reported.
  • The report says Cohen claims he and several others were present when Donald Trump Jr., who attended the meeting, informed Trump of the Russians’ offer, and that Trump greenlit going ahead with the meeting.
  • Cohen reportedly does not have evidence, like tape recordings, proving his claims but is willing to testify about it to the special counsel Robert Mueller under oath.

Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s former longtime lawyer, says Trump knew in advance about a Russian lawyer’s offer to the Trump campaign of dirt on then Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election, multiple media reports said.

CNN, citing sources with knowledge of the matter, reported that Cohen claims he was one of several people who were present when Donald Trump Jr. informed Trump of the offer. Cohen reportedly says that Trump greenlit the meeting after hearing about it from his son.
