Russia’s defense ministry claimed on Monday it had new evidence that the missile that downed Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 (MH17) in 2014 was fired by Ukrainian forces.
The Amsterdam-to-Kuala Lumpur flight was shot down by a soviet-made missile over the rebel-held eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014. All 298 people on board, including 27 Australians, were killed. See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Meghan Markle’s 37th birthday on Saturday, August 4 marked her first as the Duchess of Sussex and as the wife to Prince Harry. But while these are certainly titles to celebrate, Markle has made it clear that she is defined by far more than her royal relationship.
In 2014, on her 33rd birthday, Markle published an open letter to herself and her fans on her now-defunct website The Tig. She wrote about her journey towards self-acceptance — particularly without a man by her side.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

It could have been worse if not for Ricardo Quaresma, who started for the first time in the tournament and scored his maiden World Cup goal with a shot that had about as much flare as any in the tournament.
Portugal finished second in Group B after a 1-1 draw with Iran on Monday. The 2016 European champions will next face Uruguay on Saturday in the round of 16.
"The conclusion and the most important thing is we're going to continue playing," Portugal coach Fernando Santos said. "We had a strong opponent."
Quaresma became the only player other than Ronaldo to score for the Portuguese in three games in Russia. The 34-year-old midfielder also became Portugal's oldest scorer in World Cup play by hitting a curling shot from the edge of the penalty area that went beyond the reach of diving Iran goalkeeper Ali Beiranvand.
Quaresma's goal came on a night when Ronaldo — who had scored all four Portugal goals in its first two games of Group B play — was denied on a penalty by Beiranvand.
"We were on top of the game until the penalty, and we didn't make it. It wasn't perfect, but that's football," Santos said. "We did what was expected and now we have to settle down and think about Uruguay."
Karim Ansarifard scored a late penalty for Iran, which need to win to advance but couldn't break through a second time despite a furious charge in the waning minutes.
The penalty was awarded after a video review showed a handball in the area against Portugal. But although Iran coach Carolos Queiroz benefited from that review, he railed against the system for the second day in a row. In particular, he cited a decision to give Ronaldo a yellow card after his elbow struck Iran defender Morteza Pouraliganji in the face.
"Elbow is red card in the rules," Queiroz asserted, adding that there are no written exceptions for players named Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. "The decisions they must be clear for everybody, for the people. Everybody agrees that VAR is not going well. That's the reality. There are a lot of complaints."
Spain won Group B after its 2-2 draw with Morocco. Both Spain and Portugal had a goal difference of plus-1, but Spain scored six goals in its three group matches while Portugal had five.
Spain will next face host Russia on Sunday in Moscow.
Quaresma had nine international goals in 78 previous appearances for Portugal. But his goal against Iran had all appeal of a Ronaldo strike. He sent the shot with the outside of his right foot right spinning into the far corner near the end of the first half.

Not bad for someone who had played little more than 20 minutes as a substitute in Portugal's first two games. Ronaldo certainly looked impressed, wrapping his right arm around Quaresma's shoulders as he roared and raised his left fist into the air.
Santos's confidence that Quaresma was ready to influence the game not only was clear in his decision to start the veteran, but in the coach's comment afterward.
"I always take the decisions that are right for my team," he said.
Ronaldo, who avoided reporters as he left the Mordovia Arena, has now missed six of his last 14 penalty kicks. But he hasn't been the only big star to miss one in this tournament. Messi also was denied in Argentina's opening draw against Iceland.
Ronaldo's penalty was awarded after the use of video review following an apparent takedown of the Portugal forward by Saeid Ezatolahi in the area. The Iranian team, already aggrieved by the replay system overturning a goal against Spain, reacted angrily. Players swarmed Paraguayan referee Enrique Caceres, who initially had waved play on after Ronaldo went down.
Beiranvand made it a moot point, but normally defensive-minded Iran still needed to score multiple goals to advance, and they were unable to do so against a squad that won the 2016 European Championship by virtue of its own strong defensive play.
Iran has now been to five World Cups — all since 1978 — but has yet to advance out of group play. Its players collapsed on the field at the final whistle while Portugal's somewhat muted celebration had more the look of relief.

Officials from the Netherlands and Australia today formally stated that they are convinced Russia was responsible for the deployment of the “Buk” anti-aircraft missile system that shot down Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 (MH17) in 2014. The announcement came a day after a Dutch-led joint investigation team released a report on their findings, which concluded the missile had belonged to the Russian Army’s 53rd anti-aircraft brigade, which was based outside the city of Kursk, north of the Ukrainian border.
Physical evidence collected by investigators, along with radar track and flight recorder data, pointed to the use of a specific warhead type associated with Buk surface-to-air missiles. Paint transferred from fragments of the missile to the aircraft’s fuselage was matched with recovered parts of the missile.
Russia has long denied that any of its military equipment ever crossed the border into eastern Ukraine, and the Russians presented several alternative scenarios—including blaming the downing of the airliner on a Ukrainian Air Force pilot. The Russians at first claimed to have radar evidence proving their allegation, but the country then said it was lost—only to claim they had found the evidence again just two days before the Joint Investigative Team’s 2016 press conference. The separate target that Russia claimed to have identified on radar was actually part of MH17’s fuselage breaking away after the missile detonated.

Today, SpaceShipTwo completed its first powered test since the horrific crash in 2014 that killed one of its pilots. The craft, VSS Unity, took off from Mojave Air and Space Port aboard a plane called CMS Eve, and was piloted by two people. According to Richard Branson, the vehicle went supersonic, up to Mach 1.6. He proclaimed Virgin Galactic “back on track.”
.@virgingalactic back on track. Successful powered flight, Mach 1.6. Data review to come, then on to the next flight. Space feels tantalisingly close now.

It’s a great accomplishment for a company that has been taking it slow since the 2014 accident. Virgin Galactic performed numerous glide tests of SpaceShipTwo in order to ensure it was once again ready for a powered test, its fifth overall (but first since the fatal crash).
Following the investigation into what happened, The Spaceship Company (a Virgin Galactic subsidiary) made some changes to the design of SpaceShipTwo, according to CNBC. If all goes well with future powered tests, then Virgin Galactic could become one of the premier names in space tourism and launch providers.

Cambridge Analytica is under the microscope once again, but this time for previously undisclosed activities back in 2014, well before it joined President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign.
The Washington Post reported Monday that the data mining company, which has come under fire for using the data of 50 million Facebook users without their permission to craft targeted ads for Trump’s campaign, sent dozens of employees who were not US citizens to advise Republican midterm campaigns on strategy and messaging in 2014, potentially violating election laws prohibiting foreign nationals from taking part in decision-making processes on political campaigns.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

France’s Twittersphere is mourning the death of the officer who swapped himself for hostages during the supermarket siege, speculating that the tragedy might have been avoided if authorities had monitored suspected extremists.
Lieutenant-Colonel Arnaud Beltrame volunteered to take the place of hostages to save the lives of people inside a supermarket in the town of Trebes. He was then shot and fatally injured by the gunman during the siege.

On Saturday morning, Interior Minister Gerard Collomb wrote on Twitter that the heroic policeman had succumbed to his wounds. The post gathered hundreds of comments, praising the bravery and sacrifice of Beltrame. The veteran officer was decorated with the National Order of the Legion of Honour, the highest order of merit for both military and civil deeds in France.
Yet, many on social media suggested that Beltrame might have been alive if the French government had better monitored individuals on its terror watch list. “He died because you refuse to neutralize those Islamists on Fiche S list,” one man wrote on Twitter.
The enigmatic Fiche S is an indicator in France to flag an individual considered a threat to national security who should be kept under constant watch. The list once included Amedy Coulibaly, an Islamist behind Île-de-France attacks back in 2015.
The Carcassonne and Trebes gunman, Radouane Lakdim, was put on the Fiche S list in 2014. He was suspected of “radicalization and links with the Salafist movement” of ultra-conservative Islamists. Closely monitored in 2016 and 2017, according to Collomb, the man was later found to be no threat to national security.
French authorities confirmed that Moroccan-born Lakdim was a French citizen, without specifying when exactly he became naturalized. Yet, according to some media reports, Lakdim got his French passport in 2015, right after he was placed on the notorious watchlist.
“Beltrame was killed by a Moroccan offender who received French nationality in 2015 from blind authorities. Will this masquerade stop one day?” one woman exclaimed on Twitter. “Fiche S in 2014 + French national in 2015 = 4 dead in 2018,” another person fumed.
“Our leaders are accountable for the bloodshed yesterday,” another angry commenter said.
The ire of the Twitterati seemed to be directed both against the shooter and the French government, which seems to have just ignored the threat the attacker posed. “A convicted foreigner on Fiche S list mustn’t have been granted French citizenship and must have been deported from the country immediately,” Valérie Boyer, a member of the National Assembly, wrote on Twitter.
Agissons ! #Trèbes
— Valérie Boyer (@valerieboyer13) March 24, 2018
“Indeed, we must get serious explanations why the authorities granted the nationality to this individual,” another person added.
The majority of those behind recent terrorist attacks in France were known to intelligence services according to ex-MI5 intelligence officer Annie Machon. But for some reason they are not being monitored carefully enough and were not followed around, the former MI5 agent believes. The perpetrators “are allowed to get more radicalized and carry out these appalling deeds,” she told RT.
Machon, who resigned in 1996 to blow the whistle on the incompetence and crimes of spies, insists that the intelligence agencies have “an over-reliance” on electronic surveillance. “They ignore to a certain extent the real importance of pre-emptive human intelligence, when you send agents to these communities to find out what people are thinking, what they are planning, what they are about to do. That is what is lacking at the moment,” she said.

The UK has spent £1.75bn ($ 2.44bn) on air and drone strikes in Iraq and Syria as part of the US-led campaign against Islamic State, the Drone Wars UK group said, based on data it acquired through Freedom of Information requests.
Since August 2014, the Tornado, Typhoon and Reaper aircraft of the Royal Air Force have spent a total of 42,000 hours, or almost five years, in the air. That alone cost the taxpayers around £1.5 billion, Drone Wars said. The group estimates it costs £80,000 to keep the multirole fighter Typhoon airborne for 60 minutes, and the per-hour price of operating Tornado and Reaper planes stands at £35,000 and £3,500, respectively. Besides fuel, the calculations include crew, maintenance and capital costs – which are absent from official estimates.
The cost of the munitions fired by the UK warplanes and drones during Operation Shader, which is the collective name of the ongoing UK involvement in Iraq and Syria, has reached £268 million, the information received by Drone Wars UK revealed. The British pilots have carried out 1,700 airstrikes in Syria and Iraq over the last three and a half years, dropping 3,545 bombs and missiles.
Paveway IV dual mode GPS and laser-guided bombs have been the most widely used weapons, with 2,329 units (priced at £70,000 each) fired. The most expensive piece of munitions employed as part of the campaign against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) was the Storm Shadow cruise missile. With each unit priced at £800,000 per unit, its eight launches cost around £6.4 million.

Drone Wars UK pointed out that their report only covered air strikes and that “the overall cost of UK military operations in Iraq and Syria will be much higher.” The group argued that the net cost of Operation Shader provided by the government last year didn’t cover all the expenses.
In October, the UK Defense Ministry said that the “total net cost of operations against Daesh (Arabic acronym for IS) in Iraq and Syria is £779 million, which includes operational allowances, accommodation and feeding support for the thousands of personnel who have served on Operation Shader, as well as costs associated with air operations including fuel and precision guided munitions.”
