3.

„Sommerurlaub 2009 vs dieses Silvester.“

Ich will auch mal! #2009vs2019

6.

“Das me”

7.

„Ist schon ok so.“

8.

12.

Protesters in Iran clash with pro-government hardliners in the country’s largest demonstrations since 2009 https://briefnews.eu/protesters-in-iran-clash-with-pro-government-hardliners-in-the-countrys-largest-demonstrations-since-2009/ https://briefnews.eu/protesters-in-iran-clash-with-pro-government-hardliners-in-the-countrys-largest-demonstrations-since-2009/#respond Sun, 31 Dec 2017 14:19:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/protesters-in-iran-clash-with-pro-government-hardliners-in-the-countrys-largest-demonstrations-since-2009/ iran protestAP

  • Iran was rocked by protests this week that pit protesters angry with the country’s economic downturn against pro-government hardliners.
  • The demonstrations began Thursday, when protesters took to the streets to criticize Iran’s government and the skyrocketing prices of basic necessities.
  • The protests are the largest in Iran since the 2009 Green Movement, which took root after former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was re-elected.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iranian hard-liners rallied Saturday to support the country’s supreme leader and clerically overseen government as spontaneous protests sparked by anger over the country’s ailing economy roiled major cities in the Islamic Republic.

The demonstrations, commemorating a mass 2009 pro-government rally challenging those who rejected the re-election of hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad amid fraud allegations, had been scheduled weeks earlier.

However, they took on new importance after the economic protests began Thursday, sparked by social media posts and a surge in prices of basic food supplies, like eggs and poultry.

Police arrested 52 people during Thursday’s demonstrations, according to the semi-official Fars news agency. Social media footage depicted police dressed in riot gear using water cannons and tear gas to dispel protesters.

Thousands have taken to the streets of several cities in Iran, beginning first in Mashhad, the country’s second-largest city and a holy site for Shiite pilgrims. Demonstrators also have criticized Iran’s government during the protests, with social media videos showing clashes between protesters and police.

The largest demonstrations in Iran since 2009

Fars said protests on Friday also struck Qom, a city that is the world’s foremost center for Shiite Islamic scholarship and home to a major Shiite shrine.

The demonstrations appear to be the largest to strike the Islamic Republic since its 2009 Green Movement arose after Ahmadinejad’s re-election.

However, information about them remains scarce as both state-run and semi-official media in Iran have not widely reported on the protests. An online report Saturday by Iranian state television said national media in the country hadn’t reported on the protests on orders from security officials.

State TV also aired its first reports on the protests Saturday, acknowledging some protesters chanted the name of Iran’s one-time shah, who fled into exile just before its 1979 Islamic Revolution.

“Counterrevolution groups and foreign media are continuing their organized efforts to misuse the people’s economic and livelihood problems and their legitimate demands to provide an opportunity for unlawful gatherings and possibly chaos,” state TV said.

State TV aired live Saturday’s pro-government “9 Dey Epic” demonstrations, named for the date on the Iranian calendar the 2009 protests took place. The footage showed people waving flags and carrying banners bearing the image of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In Tehran, some 4,000 people gathered at the Musalla prayer ground in central Tehran. They called for criminal trials for Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi, leaders in the Green Movement who have been under house arrest since 2011. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, whose administration struck the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, campaigned on freeing the men, though they remain held.

‘We must go back to the pre-nuclear deal situation’

Hassan RouhaniReuters

Mohsen Araki, a Shiite cleric who serves in Iran’s Assembly of Experts, praised Rouhani’s efforts at improving the economy. However, he said Rouhani needed to do more to challenge “enemy pressures.”

“We must go back to the pre-nuclear deal situation,” Araki said. “The enemy has not kept with its commitments.”

Ali Ahmadi, a pro-government demonstrator, blamed the U.S for all of Iran’s economic problems.

“They always say that we are supporting Iranian people, but who should pay the costs?” Ahmadi asked.

But by Saturday afternoon, hundreds of students and others joined a new economic protest at Tehran University. Witnesses said they saw a mass of riot police at the gates of the university while some roads had been blocked off.

Iran’s economy has improved since the nuclear deal, which saw Iran limit its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the end of some of the international sanctions that crippled its economy. Tehran now sells its oil on the global market and has signed deals for tens of billions of dollars of Western aircraft.

That improvement has not reached the average Iranian, however. Unemployment remains high. Official inflation has crept up to 10 percent again. A recent increase in egg and poultry prices by as much as 40 percent, which a government spokesman has blamed on a cull over avian flu fears, appears to have been the spark for the protests.

While police have arrested some protesters, the country’s powerful Revolutionary Guard and its affiliates have not intervened as they have in other unauthorized demonstrations since the 2009 election. The economic protests initially just put pressure on Rouhani’s administration, but purported footage from recent demonstrations included anti-government chants.

Trump weighs in

Donald TrumpJim Bourg/Reuters

Early on Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted out his support for the protests.

“Many reports of peaceful protests by Iranian citizens fed up with regime’s corruption & its squandering of the nation’s wealth to fund terrorism abroad,” he wrote. “Iranian govt should respect their people’s rights, including right to express themselves. The world is watching! (hashtag) IranProtests.”

It’s unclear what effect Trump’s support would have. Iranians already are largely skeptical of him over his refusal to re-certify the nuclear deal. Trump’s insistence in an October speech on using the term “Arabian Gulf” in place of the Persian Gulf also has also riled the Iranian public.

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s comments in June to Congress saying American is working toward “support of those elements inside of Iran that would lead to a peaceful transition of that government” has been used by Iran’s government of a sign of foreign interference in its internal politics.

The State Department issued a statement Friday supporting the protests, referencing Tillerson’s earlier comments.

“Iran’s leaders have turned a wealthy country with a rich history and culture into an economically depleted rogue state whose chief exports are violence, bloodshed and chaos,” the statement said.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry dismissed the comments.

“The noble Iranian nation never pays heed to the opportunist and hypocritical mottos chanted by the U.S. officials and their interfering allegations on domestic developments in the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the state-run IRNA news agency quoted ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi as saying.

Average house price in London drops at fastest rate since 2009 https://briefnews.eu/average-house-price-in-london-drops-at-fastest-rate-since-2009/ https://briefnews.eu/average-house-price-in-london-drops-at-fastest-rate-since-2009/#respond Wed, 15 Nov 2017 14:44:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/average-house-price-in-london-drops-at-fastest-rate-since-2009/

Crest Nicholson Holdings Plc (CRST.L) is the latest property firm to flag weakness in central London property prices while reporting average house price growth across its UK business fell to a quarter of that in 2016.

“The housing market is generally robust across the Group’s principal operating areas and sales prices continue to show moderate growth although Central London transactions are suffering from some volume and price weakness,” the company said in a statement.

Average selling prices for the builder’s homes increased 5.4 per cent to £391,000 compared to growth of 18 percent in 2016.

With concerns over Brexit weighing and the Bank of England this month raising interest rates for the first time in a decade, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) said last week that house prices in Britain were no longer rising.

In London they are falling at the fastest pace since 2009, it added, knocking shares of house builders including Crest Nicholson lower.

In its annual trading update, Crest Nicholson said it built 2.3 per cent more homes in the 12 months to the end of October but that its underlying sales rate per outlet per week fell to an average of 0.77 from 0.81 last year.

The company, which builds homes in south Wales, London and southern and eastern England, however stuck to its sales target of £1.4 billion in 2019.

Self-driving cars have Silicon Valley salivating. Something of a gold rush is going on right now, as everyone is trying to perfect the technology that could banish gridlock and traffic casualties once and for all. Google started working on the problem back in 2009, then in 2016 spun the project out as a company in its own right called Waymo. Today, we learned something new about the Waymo project: it’s powered by Intel.

The chip-maker publicly stated today that it has been partnering with Waymo since 2009. Intel has been supplying Xeon processors, Arria field programmable gate arrays (for machine vision), and gigabit ethernet solutions (to let all the various components talk to each other).

“With three million miles of real-world driving, Waymo cars with Intel technology inside have already processed more self-driving car miles than any other autonomous fleet on US roads,” wrote Intel CEO Brian Krzanich in a blog post announcing the news.

Hedge funds betting on stocks are having their best year since 2009 — but they’re still getting smoked by the market https://briefnews.eu/hedge-funds-betting-on-stocks-are-having-their-best-year-since-2009-but-theyre-still-getting-smoked-by-the-market-2/ https://briefnews.eu/hedge-funds-betting-on-stocks-are-having-their-best-year-since-2009-but-theyre-still-getting-smoked-by-the-market-2/#respond Sat, 26 Aug 2017 12:30:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hedge-funds-betting-on-stocks-are-having-their-best-year-since-2009-but-theyre-still-getting-smoked-by-the-market-2/ frustrated traderReuters / Brendan McDermid

  • Equity hedge funds are off to their best start to a year since 2009, but they’re still trailing the S&P 500.
  • In a market that’s been largely devoid of price swings, hedge funds have been piling into the same proven stocks.

The performance of stock hedge funds this year isn’t exactly providing a ringing endorsement for the industry.

The average fund is up 7% in 2017, the best seven-month start to a year since 2009, when the market hit its post-financial crisis bottom and embarked upon the ongoing bull market, according to Goldman Sachs. And while that return looks good on paper, it’s still trailing the benchmark S&P 500, which has climbed 12% over the period.

The lagging performance begs the question — why should investors keep forking over big fees to hedge fund managers when they can get superior performance by simply buying cheaper S&P 500 index funds?

To make matters even more dicey, hedge funds are increasingly piling into the same stocks, creating a crowded situation that seems harmless when the market is rising, but poses the threat of outsized losses should stocks roll over. The average hedge fund carries 68% of its long portfolio in its top 10 positions, just below a record level of density reached in early 2016, Goldman says.

It must be noted, however, that the strategy of continuing to pile into the same stocks is working right now. A Goldman index of the stocks most frequently found in the top 10 of hedge fund holdings has surged 19%, dwarfing the S&P 500’s return of 12%.

The problem is, that’s only one piece of the puzzle. It’s the rest of those portfolios that’s causing them to trail the benchmark.

With all of that said, it’s only fair to point out that hedge funds haven’t exactly been dealt the easiest set of conditions. For much of the past several months, volatility in the stock market has been locked near record lows, depriving money managers of the types of price swings that create opportunity. As an extension of that, the return difference between the best- and worst-performing stocks — a measure called dispersion — is below average for most sectors.

Screen Shot 2017 08 18 at 10.20.38 AMGoldman Sachs

Looking beyond stock hedge funds, the picture is even more bleak. A universe of all hedge funds has risen just 4% so far in 2017, while those specifically focused on macro investment have actually lost money, falling 1%.

This struggle to turn a profit has hit some of the industry’s biggest players. Two Sigma, one of the world’s fastest-growing firms, saw its Risk Premia strategy return less than 0.1% over the first six months of the year. Meanwhile, the flagship fund for $ 10.5 billion Maverick Capital made no money in the first half of 2017.

However, with global markets increasingly on edge amid growing geopolitical tensions, better opportunities could open up for hedge funds, and soon. The stock market in particular has looked rattled of late, with the CBOE Volatility Index — or VIX — spiking roughly 40% over the past week, signaling investor fear.

A more volatile market is what hedge funds have craved all year, and it looks like they’ll soon get a chance to prove their worth.

As House Republicans rushed through a bill designed to partially repeal and replace the law known as Obamacare this week, the arguments against them sounded awfully familiar — because Republicans had used them before, when Obamacare was first passed.

Witness a prime example featuring OZY Editor-in-Chief Carlos Watson, who interviewed Paul Ryan on MSNBC in the heady summer of 2009. At the time, Ryan was a rising star on the Republican side and OZY but a gleam in Watson’s eye. Ryan, now the speaker of the House, objected to Democrats moving health care bills through committee after months of debate — and months before they’d actually pass what became the Affordable Care Act.

“I don’t think we should pass bills that we haven’t read, that we don’t know what they cost,” Ryan told Watson at the time. This week, to cobble together the votes needed for a health care bill to pass, the 2017 version of Paul Ryan added fresh amendments to the massive bill as it hit the House floor — before the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office could tell lawmakers what it costs.

With Watson, Ryan 2009 talked up the time he spent meeting with constituents and slammed the “artificial deadline” of completing a bill before August recess — a deadline Democrats would not hit, amid internal squabbles. This week, House Republicans, under heavy pressure from Donald Trump’s White House, sped the bill through before taking off for a weeklong recess at home.

John Carmack, the CTO of Oculus, has sued his former employer, ZeniMax Media, for alleged breach of contract.

In the lawsuit, which was filed on Tuesday, Carmack claims that he is owed over $ 22.5 million as part of the 2009 deal in which ZeniMax Media bought id Software. Carmack co-founded id Software in 1991, which created Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, and a number of other legendary video game titles. He left id Software in 2013 and quickly joined Oculus.

Carmack, Oculus, and ZeniMax Media have been entangled in an ongoing legal battle for years over questions surrounding the development of the Oculus VR headset. ZeniMax sued Oculus in 2014 over misappropriation of trade secrets, copyright infringement, and breach of contract, among other accusations. The civil lawsuit went to trial earlier this year and resulted in a jury finding that Oculus was liable for $ 300 million. Carmack, who was accused of stealing code and destroying evidence, was found not to be personally liable for any damages. ZeniMax had sought damages of $ 6 billion in the case. Oculus, which vowed to appeal, has not done so yet.
