Canadian biathlete Rosanna Crawford landed on the World Cup podium for the first time in her career with a third-place finish in Ruhpolding, Germany, on Thursday.

Dorothea Wierer of Italy won the women’s 15-kilometre individual race — her first win of the season — with a time of 41 minutes 29.0 seconds. Finland’s Kaisa Makarainen finished 12.7 seconds back in second, followed by the 29-year-old Crawford, who claimed bronze at 21.2 behind the winner.

Crawford also shot cleanly as she claimed her first ever podium place.

“Not something I was really expecting this season,” the Canmore, Alta., native said.

Ukrainians Yuliia Dzhima and Valj Semerenko finished fourth and fifth, respectively, followed by Darya Domracheva.

Belarus teammate Nadezhda Skardino’s seventh place was enough to win the individual crystal globe after her first place in Ostersund, Sweden.

Overall World Cup leader Anastasiya Kuzmina finished ninth, 1:32.3 behind with three missed targets. After 11 races, the Slovakian biathlete leads on 454 points, ahead of Makarainen on 429 and Wierer on 378.

Julia Ransom finished 34th, Sarah Beaudry was 53rd, and Emma Lunder came in at 67 to round out the Canadians in the field.

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. — Three of the four curlers in today’s mixed doubles Olympic trials final are past Olympic champions — Brad Gushue, Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris have all won gold at the Games.

Now they want to get back for a second chance at glory.

Gushue is alongside Alberta skip Val Sweeting preparing to take on the team of Lawes and Morris in the first-ever event to determine who will represent Canada at the Olympics in mixed doubles.

The teams have already met two previous times at the trials this week with Sweeting and Gushue winning both games.

Morris and Lawes had to win a Saturday night semifinal game against Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant to make it into today’s final.

“I’m thrilled to have this opportunity,” Lawes said. “I want this for John as much as I want it for me. What an honour it would be to be part of the first mixed doubles Olympics.”

Lawes plays third for Jennifer Jones and was part of the team that won gold four years ago in Sochi.

Morris won Olympic gold as a third for Kevin Martin at the Vancouver Olympics eight years ago. He knows what it takes to win a trials final to get to the Games but also knows it won’t be easy today.

“It feels great to be in this game but we’re not looking past Brad and Val. They’re formidable opponents. But I think if we can keep the heat on them it’s going to be a great game,” Morris said.

The two haven’t played together very often in mixed doubles — normally Morris plays with Rachel Homan but teamed up with Lawes after Homan clinched her Olympic spot at the trials in Ottawa.

“I just got lucky that Kaitlyn wasn’t on a mixed doubles team already,” Morris said. “She was my No. 1 choice to play with when Rachel won her spot.”

Gushue, Sweeting finding mixed magic

It wasn’t a smooth start for the skips to begin the competition. They dropped their first two games and at times looked lost as they tried to navigate the relatively new-to-them discipline.

Gushue and Sweeting had only played together three previous times before the mixed doubles trials and needed to learn how each other operated on the ice. They figured it out in a hurry.

They’ve won eight of their last nine games to punch a ticket into today’s final.

Gushue says he wasn’t sure about this event until they started playing here this week and really grasped the game. And in a lot of ways it was Sweeting that got Gushue fired up about this event.

“When Val made a triple against Laura [Crocker] and Geoff [Walker], I gave a pretty good fist-pump and shout and the guys gave me a hard time,” he said. “But the juices are flowing. I’m into this now. I want to win as much as anybody.”

And so does Sweeting. She’s never made it to the Olympics. Gushue won 2006 Olympic gold in Italy when he was 25 years old.

Sweeting is throwing last rock for the team this week and says she’s ready to seize this moment.

“This is what we play for. It’s really exciting that we have this opportunity,” she said.

Mixed doubles curling, featuring eight countries, gets underway the day before the opening ceremonies on Feb. 8, and will conclude with the gold- and bronze-medal games on Feb. 13.

Nuclear-capable Russian Tu-95 bombers in 1st-ever Pacific patrol from Indonesia (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/nuclear-capable-russian-tu-95-bombers-in-1st-ever-pacific-patrol-from-indonesia-video/ https://briefnews.eu/nuclear-capable-russian-tu-95-bombers-in-1st-ever-pacific-patrol-from-indonesia-video/#respond Thu, 07 Dec 2017 20:16:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nuclear-capable-russian-tu-95-bombers-in-1st-ever-pacific-patrol-from-indonesia-video/

A pair of Russian Tu-95MS strategic bombers have flown a maiden patrol mission over the southern Pacific from a military base in Indonesia. Crew and support staff had to deal with an unfamiliar tropical environment to successfully navigate and complete the mission.

The two Tupolev bombers, which can carry nuclear weapons, flew Tuesday from Ukrainka Airfield in Russia’s eastern Amur region to the Biak Airbase in Indonesia’s easternmost Papua province. The almost 7,000km flight with mid-course in-flight refueling took about 10 hours, which was longer than the pilots expected. Bad weather prompted several changes in their flight course, they told journalists.

A pair of Ilyushin Il-76MD military transport planes had arrived at the site a day ahead, carrying equipment and support crews. The mission, it turned out Thursday, was more than just a social visit to Indonesia. The Tu-95s, known as “Bears” in the West, flew a patrol mission over southern Pacific before returning to the Indonesian base. The patrol was the first of its kind for the Russian Air Forces and was without incident despite the persistently difficult weather conditions in the region.

“The goal of the flights is to train pilots in navigating in the southern hemisphere as well as confirm the reliability of the control systems. The support logistics of the Biak Airfield was also confirmed during the mission. The planes were prepared for the patrol on schedule,” said Lt. Gen. Sergey Kobylash, commander of the Air Forces’ Long Range Aviation division.

Military officials confirmed that the equipment proved to work fine in the hot and humid climate of Indonesia. The hosting country also shouldered its part of the joint mission, including fueling the Russian bombers and hosting the visiting Russian military contingent, the general added. Some 110 Russians arrived in Indonesia for the patrol, with Indonesian military officials saying the visit was part of a navigation exercise and will last until Saturday, the local Jakarta Post newspaper reported.

Indonesia was a key partner of the former Soviet Union in the early ‘60s, but relations between them soured when anti-communist sentiment in Indonesia escalated into a wide-scale US-supported purge, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 500,000 supporters of the Indonesian Communist Party. Moscow and Jakarta reestablished ties in the last years of the USSR and became close partners in arms trade in the mid-2000s.

The Indonesian military, currently, has a number of high-tech Russian military hardware in service, including Sukhoi Su-27 and Su-30 fighter jets, Mil Mi-17 and Mi-24 helicopters and BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles. Moscow and Jakarta are currently negotiating a contract for Su-35 fighters, which, if signed, will make Indonesia the second country after China to by the advanced Russian aircraft.

Whitecaps tear apart Quakes for 1st-ever playoff win https://briefnews.eu/whitecaps-tear-apart-quakes-for-1st-ever-playoff-win/ https://briefnews.eu/whitecaps-tear-apart-quakes-for-1st-ever-playoff-win/#respond Thu, 26 Oct 2017 07:46:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/whitecaps-tear-apart-quakes-for-1st-ever-playoff-win/ Cristian Techera scored on a stunning free kick as the Vancouver Whitecaps thumped the San Jose Earthquakes 5-0 in Major League Soccer’s single-elimination knockout round on Wednesday night.

Nicolas Mezquida, with two, Fredy Montero and Kendall Waston had the other goals for Vancouver, which picked up its first-ever playoff victory since joining MLS in 2011.

Whitecaps dominate Earthquakes, advance to West semifinals1:22

The third-seeded Whitecaps will now face the Seattle Sounders, who finished second in the Western Conference, in a home and away aggregate semifinal series that starts Sunday at B.C. Place Stadium.

After setting up Montero’s opener in the first half, the pint-sized Techera curled a left-footed free kick over the wall and into the top corner from 30 yards out past a helpless Andrew Tarbell in the 57th minute to send the crowd of 21,083 into a frenzy.

Waston added Vancouver’s third seven minutes later off a corner — the Whitecaps’ third set-piece goal of the night and 18th of the season — after the ball pinged around the San Jose penalty area before being bundled over the line.

Mezquida, who subbed on in the 68th minute, then grabbed back-to-back goals in 78th and 80th to complete the romp as the Whitecaps scored five goals in a game for the first time this year.

Montero gave Vancouver a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute after a nervy start when Waston redirected a Techera corner right to the designated player, who made no mistake from in close.

The Whitecaps could have avoided Wednesday’s winner-take-all encounter with a victory over the Earthquakes at home on Oct. 15 in a game that ended 1-1, or by grabbing at least a draw in Sunday’s 2-1 road loss to the Portland Timbers.

Vancouver instead limped to the regular-season finish line with a 1-3-1 record, but were full marks on this night in securing the club’s first playoff win after three losses and a draw in four previous tries.

San Jose had a decent opportunity to equalize while down 1-0 less than a minute into the second half when Whitecaps goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic had to be sharp on Chris Wondolowski’s shot from in tight, but after a couple more half chances, that would be it for San Jose.

With the stadium’s retractable roof open on a chilly night, Vancouver started tentatively and was almost made to pay in the fourth minute when Anibal Godoy forced a leaping save out of Marinovic on a free kick from 25 yards out.

The hosts looked nervous with a number of errant passes and giveaways early on, but started to play better as the half wore on and looked the more likely side to score when Montero finally broke through.

Whitecaps left back Marcel de Jong came close five minutes later after the Earthquakes could only partially clear a free kick, but Tarbell made a nice save on the Canadian international’s low drive.

Vancouver returned to the MLS Cup playoffs after missing out by eight points in 2016, while sixth-seeded San Jose made the post-season for the first time since 2012 thanks to Sunday’s dramatic 3-2 stoppage-time victory over Minnesota United.

The Earthquakes’ bizarre regular-season that included a minus-21 goal difference — good for third-worst in all MLS — saw the club get outscored lose by two goals or more in 12 of its 14 defeats by a combined score of 42-6.

Since the league expanded its playoff format in 2011, five of the 16 teams to advance from the knockout round have made the MLS Cup, with three clubs winning it all, including the last two years.

Canada defeats U.S. to claim 1st-ever World League medal https://briefnews.eu/canada-defeats-u-s-to-claim-1st-ever-world-league-medal/ https://briefnews.eu/canada-defeats-u-s-to-claim-1st-ever-world-league-medal/#respond Sun, 09 Jul 2017 03:40:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canada-defeats-u-s-to-claim-1st-ever-world-league-medal/

Behind 13 points from Gord Perrin, Canada wrapped up their storybook FIVB Volleyball World League campaign with a bronze medal after coming from behind for a 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-21) win over the United States on Saturday evening in Curitiba, Brazil.

The Canadian captain Perrin led a balanced attack as Sharone Vernon-Evans and Graham Vigrass had 12 points apiece while Ryley Barnes added 10 points off the bench.

“I’m just really proud right now of everyone in the program, and happy for everyone in the past that’s helped the program. It’s been the last four or five years, every year we achieve something new – we go to somewhere we haven’t been.  I’m excited to see where we can go from here; I hope we can continue to grow,” said Perrin.

Leading the way for the U.S. were Taylor Sander and David Smith with 14 points each, followed by 12 from both Thomas Jaeschke and Benjamin Patch.

Canada was already playing with house money having advanced to their first-ever semifinal in World League play. But that didn’t diminish the Canucks’ motivation to continue improving on their 13th place finish from last year.

Middle-blocker Smith set the tone for the American squad, with 6 points in the opening set win.

“We didn’t start well.. we made a lot a mistakes.. we really weren’t ready,” said Canadian head coach, Stephane Antiga.

Canada responded from a slow start to win the second set with tremendous defence.

Canada’s strong play carried into the third set as they took a 2-1 lead with Perrin, Vernon-Evans and Barnes setting a fast pace.

In the fourth set, the Canadians showed no nerves capitalizing on the mistakes of their opponents to win a tight final frame.

“I really appreciated the direction of my players and then everyone participated in this victory – everybody played! This is amazing for Canada .. and nice promotion for our sport in Canada ..Now we have even more motivation to work harder. Our goal is to be better and better as a team but also develop players… When you’ve tasted this [winning a medal] you want to repeat it,” said Antiga.

NATO stages 1st-ever war games in Baltic ‘weak spot’ to defend from ‘Russia threat’ (PHOTOS) https://briefnews.eu/nato-stages-1st-ever-war-games-in-baltic-weak-spot-to-defend-from-russia-threat-photos/ https://briefnews.eu/nato-stages-1st-ever-war-games-in-baltic-weak-spot-to-defend-from-russia-threat-photos/#respond Mon, 19 Jun 2017 13:05:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nato-stages-1st-ever-war-games-in-baltic-weak-spot-to-defend-from-russia-threat-photos/ British, Polish, American and Lithuanian troops took part in military exercises in the Suwalki Gap on the border between Poland and Lithuania, “protecting” NATO’s soft spot from the “Russian threat” for the very first time.

Some 1,500 NATO troops participated in the war games in the Suwalki Gap over the weekend, alongside US helicopters and British aircraft, training to protect the area from alleged “aggression.”

The Gap is a small 104km patch of land on the border with Poland, Lithuania and Belarus, as well as the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

“The Gap is vulnerable because of the geography. It’s not inevitable that there’s going to be an attack, of course, but… if that was closed, then you have three allies that are north that are potentially isolated from the rest of the alliance,” US Lieutenant General Ben Hodges told Reuters.

“We have to practice, we have to demonstrate that we can support allies in keeping [the Gap] open, in maintaining that connection.”

While 1,500 troops would struggle to meet the requirements to cover the Gap in the event of any real conflict, the drills are essential for the Baltic States to feel the support of the alliance, the head of Lithuania’s land forces, Brigadier General Valdemaras Rupsys, believes.

“This is only a small-scale drill compared to what would be needed in case of a real attack, but it is important for us because it shows that allies share our worries,” Reuters quoted Rupsys as saying.

The leader of the US battle group in Orzysz, Lieutenant Colonel Steven Gventer, seemed to be more optimistic and said the drills presented a “credible defense force that hopefully will deter aggression.”

“But if not, we’ll be prepared to move to defend the borders of NATO,” he added.

Reconnaissance personnel of the MIB Iron Wolf take part in the final operation of the exercise

The war games in Suwalki Gap came amid the ongoing 10-day Iron Wolf exercise held in Lithuania. The two drills are a part of a broader NATO exercise known as Saber Strike, taking place in the Baltic states and Poland, aimed at deterring the alleged “Russian threat.”

Russia has repeatedly denied the existence of any plans to attack the Baltic States, and denounced NATO’s military buildup along its borders as a threat to national security.

In February, Russian President Vladimir Putin blamed NATO for provoking a conflict with Moscow and using its “newly-declared official mission to deter Russia” as a pretext.

Also in February, while speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that “NATO’s expansion has led to an unprecedented level of tension over the last 30 years in Europe.”

March Madness: South Carolina earns 1st-ever trip to Final Four https://briefnews.eu/march-madness-south-carolina-earns-1st-ever-trip-to-final-four/ https://briefnews.eu/march-madness-south-carolina-earns-1st-ever-trip-to-final-four/#respond Sun, 26 Mar 2017 23:56:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/march-madness-south-carolina-earns-1st-ever-trip-to-final-four/

Luke Maye hit a jumper with 0.3 seconds left, and top-seeded North Carolina held off Kentucky 75-73 to earn the Tar Heels’ second straight trip to the Final Four and 20th all-time in Sunday’s showdown of college basketball’s elite in the South Regional.

The Tar Heels (31-7) will play Midwest champ Oregon on Saturday in Phoenix in the national semifinal.

North Carolina took control with a 12-0 run within the final 5 minutes. Kentucky’s freshmen De’Aaron Fox and Malik Monk hit three quick 3s, the last two by Monk and his second with 7.2 seconds left tied it up at 73.

Theo Pinson brought the ball down, passed back to Maye. The sophomore from Huntersville, North Carolina, knocked it down for the win with his feet on the 3-point line.

The Wildcats had one last chance, but Derek Willis’ inbound pass went out of bounds on the far end.

Kentucky (32-6) will miss out on the Final Four for the second straight year.

(7) South Carolina, (4) Florida

Sindarius Thornwell scored 26 points and South Carolina earned its first trip to the Final Four with a 77-70 victory over Florida on Sunday.

The seventh-seeded Gamecocks (26-10) used their trademark swarming defense and some solid free throw shooting to beat their fellow Southeastern Conference Gators (27-9) in the East Regional final at Madison Square Garden.

South Carolina will face Gonzaga, the No. 1 seed from the West Regional, in the Final Four on Saturday at Glendale, Arizona.

The game was as close as expected until the final minute. There were 14 lead changes and 10 ties. The last lead change came on two free throws by Thornwell with 2:24 left that made it 65-63. Florida managed just three field goals over the final 3:55.
