The post Rare Rides: The First-ever Crossover – a 1987 AMC Eagle Wagon appeared first on The Truth About Cars.

CRXs carried Civic badging through the 1987 model year, but you won’t hear “Civic CRX” very often.

This one just managed to reach six figures on the odometer, which means it probably didn’t gain many miles per year during its time on the street.

The 1.5-liter CVCC four-cylinder engine in this car was marvelously efficient and reliable, though it made just 76 horsepower. If you wanted more power than that in your Honda two-seater, you had to pony up for the CRX Si. I have owned CRXs with this engine that got close to 50 mpg during patient highway driving, and these cars felt a lot more powerful than they were.

The biggest problem with these cars (aside from a tendency to blow head gaskets) was the hideous complexity the carbureted CVCC system in its last few years of production, especially if you live in a place with strict emissions-equipment inspections. I call this the “Map of the Universe” sticker.

1987 was the last year for the CVCC-engined Civics. After that, all had fuel injection and relative vacuum-hose simplicity.

The Arizona sun has had its way with this car’s interior, and the automatic transmission would have sucked most of the fun out of the driving experience.

Fun CRX fact: you can fit 8-foot-long 2x4s in a CRX with nothing sticking out — they’ll fit with one end in the left rear corner of the cargo area and the other in the passenger footwell.
It’s nearly certain that Rhonda’s Honda in Fonda, Iowa, rusted to oblivion early in the 1990s. In Arizona, though, CRXs held together for decade after decade.

Fordexplicitly compared the appearance of the late-1970s Granada to that of the Mercedes-Benz W123 in their advertising, and so the ground was broken for Chrysler to make the allusions to Stuttgart machinery even more obvious a few years later. The name of the Chrysler E-Class was about as subtle as a tire iron blow to the kidneys, and the badging on its Dodge 600 sibling left little to the imagination.

600s came from the factory with several variations of the Chrysler 2.2/2.5 engine, as well as the Mitsubishi “Hemi 2.6” four-cylinder. This car has the 2.5 Chrysler engine, rated at 97 horsepower. Base price was $ 10,553, about $ 23,500 in 2017 dollars (the cheapest new Mercedes-Benz E-Class cost $ 38,600 in 1987, so there wasn’t much customer overlap between the two cars).

The 600s weren’t bad cars for the price, though the build quality wasn’t quite up to Mercedes-Benz standards. You’ll find this thumbtack treatment on most K-Car headliners that still drive today.

The interior is all tan and brown, with plenty of tough industro-velour upholstery and not-so-convincing artificial wood.

Aluminum-faced home audio equipment was all the rage during the 1980s, and the trend spread to automotive controls. No cassette in this car, but at least it had AM and FM radio (even plain old mono AM radios were still expensive options on many cars as late as 1987, so the standard AM/FM stereo rig in the 600 was an attractive deal).
You can’t beat the 600!

Alexa, Google Assistant, Cortana, Siri, and Bixby, we guess, are getting more and more prevalent, the narrative goes. A lot of people believe the personal assistant’s moment is now. But why now? Could it have happened back in say, 1987?
Probably not. But if you want a speculative glimpse at what that would have been like, you can watch this video from the YouTube channel Squirrel Monkey‘s popular Wonders of the World Wide Web series. As with previous entries about current products like Instagram and Tinder, it plays out like a VHS instructional video explaining to computer newbies how to get Siri working on their home computers.
It’s a good reminder of how far we’ve come; even if, hypothetically, someone had been able to get the intelligence and voice recognition right on a personal assistant in that time, all the other hardware and software limitations would surely have gotten in the way. Like abiogenesis in the primordial soup, sometimes the conditions all have to align for a technology to become usable by the general public.

A member of the 1987 Buick press fleet is hitting the auction block next year and it’s a rarified gem: a low-mileage Regal Grand National GNX, serial No. 003 and one of just 547 models built for that year, and the last of the traditional body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive Grand Nationals. It’ll be auctioned at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in January.
The GNX No. 003 was loaned out to publications including Autoweek, Motor Trend and Road & Track, where it racked up around 8,200 miles. “Through it all, a constant sad undertone was the understanding that 1987 was to be the final appearance of the traditional body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive G-body (which also underpinned the best-selling Chevy Monte Carlo, Pontiac Grand Prix and Olds Cutlass),” reads a the description published on Barrett-Jackson’s website. “A totally redesigned W-body Somerset Regal, with front-wheel drive and unitized body construction, was slated to replace the popular midsize Buick in 1988.”
So Buick opted to make “a Grand National to end all Grand Nationals” with the ’87 GNX, partnering with ASC/McLaren to equip them with wheel lip flares, fender vents, 16-by-8-inch BBS rims and more aggressive tires. It left untouched the Grand National’s standard Sequential Electronic Fuel Injection 3.8-liter V6 but added a larger Garrett T-3 turbocharger with a ceramic impeller, a larger intercooler, more aggressive fuel, spark and waste gate tables, and a dual exhaust system that boosted output from 235 horsepower and 330 foot-pounds of torque to 276 hp and 360 lb-ft. That was enough, Barrett-Jackson reports, to make the performance coupe quicker and faster in quarter-mile tests than the Ferrari F40 and Porsche 930 Turbo.
After making the test-drive rounds in the automotive media, the car sold in 1988 as a brass hat/company official car to Fischer Buick in Troy, Mich. with approximately 8,200 miles on it. From there, it quickly sold to a local resident who drove it very little, and sold it in the spring of 1989. Since 1992, it has reportedly been kept in climate-controlled storage, totally original, unmodified and undamaged, with just 10,790 miles on the odometer today. It recently underwent a complete mechanical service and cosmetic reconditioning. You can check out the listing on Barrett-Jackson here.
The first ’87 GNX ever produced resides in the General Motors Heritage Collection and No. 002 is at the Sloan Museum in Flint, Mich. Interestingly, another ’87 GNX, No. 41, will be auctioned later this week in Las Vegas.

Thirty years ago, the Dow Jones industrial average plunged by 22.6% — a gut-wrenching 508 points — to 1,738.74 on what is now referred to as Black Monday.
It was by far the largest one-day percentage drop in US stock market history. That would be the equivalent of the Dow crashing by about 5,233 points in a single day, down to 17,921.
But as scary as that October day was, US economic growth remained resilient, and gross-domestic-product growth never went negative. This is arguably the most important thing to remember about the whole ordeal.

That’s not to say the stock market has zero effect on the economy. After all, a huge sell-off could slow the economy and even lead to a recession.
But analysts have previously suggested stock-market crashes typically lead to less severe recessions than something like, for example, a housing crash or a credit crisis.
Lombard Street Research’s Dario Perkins once compared the effect on GDP from both the dotcom stock market crash of 2000 and the subprime-mortgage crisis of 2007-2008. GDP continued to rise during the former, but it got slammed in the wake of the latter.
Lombard Street Research
Going back to stocks, it’s encouraging to remember the stock market didn’t die Black Monday. The Dow is up about 1,231% since that fateful October day, to around 23,150.

This car doesn’t appear to have been stored for decades, so it must have been driven sparingly during its not-quite-150,000-mile total lifetime.

The LXi version came with a fuel-injected engine, alloy wheels (long gone from this car), a power moonroof, and these cool-looking emblems on the doors.

The 1,995cc straight-four engine in this car was rated at 110hp, same as the one in the Prelude Si that year, and made the LXi fairly quick (for the era).

This one has some rust, about as bad as what it would have had by about 1991 in New Hampshire.

The MSRP on the 1987 Accord LXi sedan was $ 14,429 (about $ 31,800 in inflation-adjusted 2017 dollars). The entry-level 1987 Accord DX hatchback was a mere $ 9,795. Meanwhile, the highest-zoot Ford Taurus that year, the LX sedan, listed at $ 14,613 and came with a 140-horse V6.
“You’ve always wished you could play like that.”
It’s… sophisticated. Honda… Accord.

I’d like to say that this car has a rampaging V8 under the hood, but it’s the 3.8-liter Buick V6 that became GM’s most versatile engine starting in the 1970s. This engine was rated at 110 horsepower in 1987. Buick was getting 276 hp (or more) out of a turbocharged version of the 3.8 in the Cutlass Supreme-sibling Regal GNX in 1987.

There’s plenty of blue velour and plastic “chrome” in this car’s interior.

Extremely fake wood? Of course!

Nearly every GM car of the late 1980s has the sagging-headliner problem. Fortunately, you can use thumbtacks to keep the cloth from dangling into your eyes while driving.

These cars are still popular among drag racers today, but the sedans are heavier than coupes and so rough 4-doors tend to get scrapped. The other midsize rear-wheel-drive Detroit cars that competed with the Cutlass Supreme didn’t last much longer; the Dodge Diplomat‘s last year was 1989, while the Fox-platform Ford LTD hung on until just 1986.
Oldsmobile quality. Feel it!

The 240 was a sturdy machine, based in large part on the 1960s technology of its Volvo 140 predecessor. This one averaged more than 8,500 miles for each of its 30 years on the planet.

It will be crushed just a few miles from where it was sold when new.

Most of the 240s you’ll see today are mid-to-late-1980s models with the B230 four-cylinder engine. These cars weren’t as heavy as their blocky appearance made them seem (the 240 wagon weighed just a bit over 3,000 pounds, about the same as a 2017 Subaru Impreza hatchback).

It’s not rusty, but the interior is well toasted by the harsh Colorado sun. There’s a glut of good-running 240s for cheap prices these days, so a tired one isn’t worth much.
