  • Dr. Ruth Westheimer is a psychosexual therapist. She started the public-radio program “Sexually Speaking” in 1981.
  • Westheimer said too many people have unreasonably high expectations for their relationship and their sex lives — and that hasn’t changed since the 1980s.
  • Westheimer emphasized the importance of being realistic, while still being hopeful.

The world of sex and relationships has changed a lot since 1981. (See: Tinder.)

And yet in some ways, it’s stayed very much the same. I recently spoke with Dr. Ruth Westheimer — better known simply as Dr. Ruth — and she told me that as long as she’s been a psychosexual therapist, people’s expectations for their relationships have been too high.

Westheimer started the public-radio program “Sexually Speaking” in 1981, and it catapulted her to international fame. She’s now 89 years old. Westheimer is an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s Teachers College, and the author of dozens of books including, most recently, “Stay or Go: Dr. Ruth’s Rules for Real Relationships.”

Too many people, Westheimer said, have “expectations that cannot be met.” Often, she added, these expectations were influenced by the media.

“Hollywood and the movies tell us that the stars have to be twinkling every night,” Westheimer said. “That’s not reality of life.”

Westheimer’s thoughts on tempering your expectations echo those of marriage educator Diane Sollee, who was interviewed by Ellen McCarthy for the book “The Real Thing.” McCarthy writes:

“[Sollee] wants couples who are getting ready to walk down the aisle to know — really know— that it will be hard. That there will be times when one or both of them want out and can barely stand the sight of each other. That they’ll be bored, then frustrated, angry, and perhaps resentful.”

Interestingly, these unattainable expectations play into people’s sex lives as well. Westheimer said people hope for multiple orgasms or think that “a man can have an erection like you see in sexually explicit movies” — though Westheimer said she hears these complaints slightly less often today than she did 37 years ago.

It’s crucial, she said, for people to be “sexually literate.”

That said, Westheimer isn’t advocating that people have low expectations for their relationship or for their sex lives. Her philosophy? It’s important “to be realistic, but to still have hope.”

Polaroids of the Colorful Characters in Amsterdam’s Red-Light District Bars During the 1980s https://briefnews.eu/polaroids-of-the-colorful-characters-in-amsterdams-red-light-district-bars-during-the-1980s/ https://briefnews.eu/polaroids-of-the-colorful-characters-in-amsterdams-red-light-district-bars-during-the-1980s/#respond Wed, 17 Jan 2018 18:05:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/polaroids-of-the-colorful-characters-in-amsterdams-red-light-district-bars-during-the-1980s/ Every city has its own red-light district, but Amsterdam’s is the largest and most popular, brimming with sexy (and sleazy), boozy, and cannabis-filled good times. In 1979, New York City artists Bettie Ringma and Marc H. Miller captured the raucous parties happening in the capital district. Broke and armed with Polaroid cameras, the artists decided to snap portraits of the hard-partying drunks and stylish characters inside Amsterdam’s smoky bars and cafés for cash.

Well before the days of Instagram influencers, the collaborators were approached by the Polaroid Corporation, who offered to provide a free case of film for the artists to take snaps of the area’s weirdest and best nightlife clientele.

The resulting photos are displayed in an exhibition at Stigter Van Doesburg Gallery, featuring original Polaroids from 1979 to 1980. Amsterdam Polaroids runs through February 17. If a trip to the Netherlands isn’t in your future, catch a glimpse of the show in our gallery.

Ready Player One trailer: Back to the Future and MORE 1980s nods in Steven Spielberg epic https://briefnews.eu/ready-player-one-trailer-back-to-the-future-and-more-1980s-nods-in-steven-spielberg-epic/ https://briefnews.eu/ready-player-one-trailer-back-to-the-future-and-more-1980s-nods-in-steven-spielberg-epic/#respond Mon, 11 Dec 2017 09:51:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ready-player-one-trailer-back-to-the-future-and-more-1980s-nods-in-steven-spielberg-epic/

The near future. Natural resources are depleting and people are spending most of their lives in a virtual reality version of the internet called the Oasis.

Based on Ernest Cline’s hit novel, the love letter to 1980s pop culture is getting a film adaptation directed by none other than Spielberg who is surely the perfect choice.

The story follows Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), an orphan living in 2045 Ohio in a stack of caravans.

When the creator of the Oasis, James Halliday (Mark Rylance) dies, he leaves a quest for his half trillion dollar fortune and ownership of the entire VR world.

Watts sets off as his avatar Parzival in search of three keys which will lead him to Halliday’s Easter Egg.

The only probably is its hidden somewhere in the 10,000 planet-spanning Oasis, with puzzles only the biggest pop culture geeks will be able to handle.

Our hero will also go up against Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelssohn), who heads up IOI, a powerful company that hires people called Gunters to search for the Easter Egg full time.

The new trailer features all kinds of major and more obscure references to movies, including Watts’ Back to the Future DeLorean hybrid, which includes Knightrider’s flashing red lights.

He said: “I would love to do Doc again, no question. It’s tough to come up with an idea that contains the excitement of the original three.

“So it would be a real challenge for the writers to come up with an original Back to the Future story that has the same passion and intensity and excitement as the other three. But it could be done, you never know.”

Ready Player One will be released in UK cinemas on March 30, 2018.

The Unforgettable Made-Up Words of the 1980s https://briefnews.eu/the-unforgettable-made-up-words-of-the-1980s/ https://briefnews.eu/the-unforgettable-made-up-words-of-the-1980s/#respond Sun, 03 Dec 2017 11:49:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-unforgettable-made-up-words-of-the-1980s/ There are close to a million words in the English language, according to some estimates. But not one to describe the crusty residue on the necks of old ketchup bottles. “As wondrously vast as our English vocabulary may be,” Richard Lederer writes in The Miracle of Language, “there remain a surprisingly large number of concepts for which we still do not have good and serviceable words.”

Enter the sniglet, itself a neologism, which its creator, comedian Rich Hall, described as “any word that doesn’t appear in the dictionary, but should.” Sniglets ranged from aeroma —“the odor emanating from an exercise room after an aerobics workout” — to cheedle (“the residue left on one’s fingertips after consuming a bag of Cheetos”). For a while during the mid-1980s, sniglets were taking the world by storm, expanding our vocabularies and making us laugh at the same time.

The best ones pinned a catchy label on a common experience.

Hall, an offbeat observational comic who was a professional logroller before he won an Emmy writing for David Letterman, first introduced the world to sniglets on the popular HBO comedy series Not Necessarily the News, which debuted in 1983. The half-hour satirical news show combined newsroom satire with more conventional sketches, not to mention some outrageous (at the time) comedic gambits.

Gettyimages 472912052

The series’ premiere, for example, shows footage of a shocked Prince Charles chatting with an aide and being informed — via a well-dubbed voice-over — that he would be meeting with eight prostitutes that day. “Not Necessarily the News followed in the steps of Airplane!, Animal House and Ghostbusters,” says Rich Markey, author of A Million Laughs: The Funny History of American Comedy, “in mocking our own generation and pop culture in general. There was no subject exempt from being satirized, [and] it was a groundbreaking TV comedy in the 1980s.”

But perhaps the show’s most famous and lasting comedic contribution was the sniglet. “Boy, the American dictionary is truly a living piece of heritage, isn’t it?” Hall observed from behind a leather chair in the show’s first installment of sniglets. “Unfortunately, every year there are thousands of words that accidentally get left out.”

Hall tasked himself and the show’s viewers with finding and compiling those words, and suggestions came pouring into the HBO press office from around the world. It amounted to a pioneering effort in what we now call crowdsourcing and user-generated content. The name of the place where one sock in every laundry load disappears to? Hozone. The unpleasant feeling engendered by fingernails being run down a chalkboard? Chalktrauma. There were hundreds of others, and the best ones pinned a catchy label on a common experience, such as napjerk (a “sudden convulsion of the body just as one is about to doze off”). “Rich Hall’s sniglets,” says Markey, “skewered the way we described the minutiae of the world we lived in.”

Hall’s regular TV sketches in turn spawned a series of best-selling books (yes, in the pre-Twitter 1980s, we had to buy books and magazines to get our bite-size comedic fixes). Of course, some sniglets, like some tweets, have not aged well. For example, anafondics — “exercising to a workout album at 16 RPM” — is a pseudo-term that is probably lost on most people under 40 today. And many sniglets have definitions far better than the words attached to them, like blivett (“to turn one’s pillow over and over, looking for the cool spot”) and furbling (“having to wander through a maze of ropes at an airport or bank even when you are the only person in line”).

The primary value of the sniglet may be its comedic one, but there is nonetheless an underlying linguistic, and even literary, worth to coining new words: Giving a common experience or object a name increases awareness of its existence, lends it a reality that it didn’t formerly enjoy. And, even if these sniglets never actually made it into a real dictionary, there is a satisfaction in knowing that they are out there and that we are not alone in having the observations they denote. It’s a powerful feeling — that we can find our common humanity in the minutiae of day-to-day life. If only there were a name for it.

BUCHAREST, Romania—Mihai Moldovanu grabs the cardboard box with the enthusiasm of a man from the future who’s opening a time capsule.

“Maybe it could still work,” he tells me.

He dusts it off with his hands. Inside the box rests the computer he built for himself in high school. He hasn’t switched it on in 10, maybe 20 years. This summer, when moving from one apartment to another, he stumbled upon the box. “I need to find a charger and an old TV set. It’s going to be tricky to revive it.”

The Morning Watch: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ 1980s Trailer, Norm MacDonald Is a Comic Genius & More https://briefnews.eu/the-morning-watch-thor-ragnarok-1980s-trailer-norm-macdonald-is-a-comic-genius-more/ https://briefnews.eu/the-morning-watch-thor-ragnarok-1980s-trailer-norm-macdonald-is-a-comic-genius-more/#respond Tue, 19 Sep 2017 12:59:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-morning-watch-thor-ragnarok-1980s-trailer-norm-macdonald-is-a-comic-genius-more/ Thor Ragnarok 1980s Trailer - Morning Watch

(The Morning Watch is a recurring feature that highlights a handful of noteworthy videos from around the web. They could be video essays, fanmade productions, featurettes, short films, hilarious sketches, or just anything that has to do with our favorite movies and TV shows.)

In this edition, Thor: Ragnarok gets a trailer remix that makes it look like the movie came out in 1987. Plus, find out why you Norm Macdonald should undeniable be considered a comedy genius, and see some of the best seasons from the third season of Rick and Morty (so far) recreated in the video game Fallout 4.

First up, the folks at Nerdist put together this Thor: Ragnarok trailer remix as if you were watching a preview for the movie in 1987 on VHS. They’ve even made the visual effects significantly worse, including substituting a shot of Lou Ferrigno as Hulk for the CGI version we’ve seen in the official trailers, not to mention using a younger version of Jeff Goldblum.

Norm Macdonald is one of the more divisive comedians to ever take over the Weekend Update news desk on Saturday Night Live. Some people appreciate his dry, blunt comedy style while others just don’t seem to get it. If you’re looking to understand why plenty of comedy fans love Norm Macdonald so much, a video essay from Nerdwriter explains why he should be considered a comedic genius.

Finally, some hardcore fans of both Rick and Morty and the video game Fallout 4 took a lot of free time to recreate something rather amusing. UpIsNotJump recreated some of the best moments from the third season of Rick and Morty inside Fallout 4. As you can see from the thumbnail teaser, that includes Pickle Rick.

Maybe The Americans is quietly a technophile love letter to the 1980s https://briefnews.eu/maybe-the-americans-is-quietly-a-technophile-love-letter-to-the-1980s/ https://briefnews.eu/maybe-the-americans-is-quietly-a-technophile-love-letter-to-the-1980s/#respond Sun, 23 Jul 2017 14:36:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/maybe-the-americans-is-quietly-a-technophile-love-letter-to-the-1980s/

The Emmy-nominated showrunners of The Americans, Joel Fields (L) and Joe Weisberg (R), sat down with Ars at ATX Television Fest 2017. One of ’em is a regular reader who enjoys our iOS and macOS reviews (but will revert to a flip phone when the show isn’t in production). (video link)

Warning: This post contains mild spoilers from the first five seasons of The Americans.

AUSTIN, Texas—On its surface, FX’s The Americans is a sleeper-cell spy drama set in DC during the Cold War. But fans will quickly tell you the show’s more about relationships and the difficulties of family and marriage; the show’s creators echo this sentiment, too.

“If you really look at the show honestly, the picture it paints of marriage is that there’s a lot of ups, a lot of downs, and it’s not an easy road,” showrunner Joe Weisberg says to fellow showrunner Joel Fields. The duo met up with Ars during this summer’s ATX Television Festival, and this author’s recent wedding comes up pre-interview. “He’s right at the beginning; he just got married. I don’t know if I want to lay out for him what’s really ahead.”

The New York City of the 1980s is quite different from the city we know today. Homicides were at near-record highs, the crack epidemic was raging, and NYC had not yet experienced the wave of gentrification that has marked it in modern times.

Janet Delaney grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles, but she always wanted to experience the city life. Though she never officially moved to the Big Apple, she took several trips and ended up taking some beautiful photos there.

Below are some of her photos that depict what New York City was like decades ago.

Jack Sommer contributed reporting to an earlier version of this article.

Delaney started taking one-week trips to New York in the mid-1980s.

Janet Delaney

“When I visited New York during these years, 1984 to 1987, I was happily taking photographs because I was in love with the place,” she told Business Insider.

Janet Delaney

During one trip, while she was staying at a friend’s loft, she came back at 3 a.m. and realized she had forgotten her key.

‘Bumblebee’ Movie Will Take Place in the 1980s https://briefnews.eu/bumblebee-movie-will-take-place-in-the-1980s/ https://briefnews.eu/bumblebee-movie-will-take-place-in-the-1980s/#respond Wed, 14 Jun 2017 03:23:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bumblebee-movie-will-take-place-in-the-1980s/ Transformers Bumblebee movie setting 1980s

An old rumor is confirmed: the first Transformers spinoff, Bumblebee, will take place when the original animated series was airing, the 1980s. Director Travis Knight‘s (Kubo and the Two Strings) prequel won’t be as busy or as large as Michael Bay‘s Transformers movies, either. A few new details have come out about the film, which will star Hailee Steinfeld (Edge of Seventeen).

Below, learn more about the Bumblebee movie setting.

Empire Magazine ran a feature on future Transformers movies that confirmed the film is set in the 1980s. Transformer World 2005 listed a few new pieces of info from the story, starting with the setting, that it’ll star fewer robots, and we should expect a different and lighter tone. Knight and Paramount are apparently aiming their film at a younger audience, not the teenage boys Bay makes movies for. Bay’s sense of humor has always been at the forefront of these action movies, so the jokes haven’t always been kid-friendly. There’s been an F-bomb or two dropped in the series, robot ball jokes, and who could forget Skids and Mudflap?

The Transformers series (and the Bumblebee movie) could arguably use a new, lighter, and more elegant and subtle approach. The first film actually received an R-rating from the MPAA, which was silly, but even recently Bay has been talking about the prospect of an R-rated Transformers movie. Last year, the director even told Collider there’s an idea for Bumblebee that could work as an R-rated movie:

You know, yeah, that would be fun. There’s actually one idea that would be really fun R rated, with Bumblebee. I don’t wanna say, but it would be really fun. Very Quentin [Tarantino], you know.

Bay is heavily involved in the prequel, but it looks like the idea of an R-rated Transformers movie – which Hasbro would have to sign off on – won’t be happening with Knight’s film. In the prequel, Steinfeld will reportedly play “a tomboy who also holds a job as a mechanic after school.” The first movie’s “boy and his car” storyline grounded the first Transformers and felt like a callback to the movies of the ’80s, so maybe the 1980s setting will only help further capture that vibe for Knight’s pic. The CEO of Laika and director of Kubo getting behind the camera for Paramount’s first spinoff makes Paramount’s first Transformers spinoff a bit more promising. Bumblebee is one of the 14 Transformers movies currently in development.

Bumblebee opens in theaters on June 8, 2018.
