The greatest double act in horror history is back with a bang – and a scream.

Laurie and Michael Myers have picked up 40 years after the iconic original in a clever reboot which disregards the mixed bag of sequels in between. The new film is packed with clever nods to the original and the best way is to watch both movies back to back.

Vue cinemas will be showing double-bill screenings of both the new Halloween and the original horror on the night of its 40th anniversary October 31, across all of its sites in the UK (except London’s West End) for one hell of a frightfest.

And when you do, keep an eye out for these cheeky Easter eggs.

Opening credits: The credits in the 1978 movie used a glowing orange pumpkin on a black background, which slowly rots as the credits rolled.

For the new movie, the same credits were used, though the pumpkin reversed its decomposition, starting rotten and healthy by the end of the credits. This cleverly also represents a franchise reborn.

The sequels: The new Halloween movie references the original films is by directly dismissing them in dialogue.

During the new movie, Laurie’s granddaughter is asked, “Wasn’t it her brother who murdered all those babysitters?”

Jamie Lee Curtis’ character slyly replies: “No. It was not her brother. That’s something that people made up.”

Loomis, the psychiatrist: The original Sam Loomis, actor Donald Pleasance, died in 1995.

The 2018 Halloween movie introduces audiences to new psychiatrist called Dr Ranbir Sartain (played by Haluk Bilginer) and Laurie calls him “the new Loomis.”

Laurie’s song: In the original movie, Laurie is seen walking down a street singing to herself but the tiny budget meant they couldn’t use a real song, so they made one up.

Curtis and director John Carpenter created something they thought sounded like a pop song.

For the 2018 movie, director David Gordon Green took the lyrics and turned them into a real song playing on the radio.

The lyrics go: But I wish I had you all alone / Just the two of us / So close to you.”

Michael’s car-jacking: In both films Micheal murders someone for their car.

The ghost sheet scene: In the original, Michael kills the Bob (John Michael Graham) and covers himself up in a white sheet so he can trick Lynda (played by P J Soles) into believing he’s Bob so he can get the upper hand.

In the 2018 version, Michael covers up Vicky’s (played by Virginia Gardner) body with a very similar-looking sheet as a quick nod to the original film.

Coming out of the closet: Halloween 2018 reverses the original with Michael hiding in a closet, with Laurie unaware which one it is. He attacks and Laurie falls out of the bedroom window before vanishing.

Halloween is out in cinemas now.

5,000-mile ‘absurd original condition’ 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser for sale https://briefnews.eu/5000-mile-absurd-original-condition-1978-toyota-land-cruiser-for-sale/ https://briefnews.eu/5000-mile-absurd-original-condition-1978-toyota-land-cruiser-for-sale/#respond Wed, 04 Apr 2018 23:00:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/5000-mile-absurd-original-condition-1978-toyota-land-cruiser-for-sale/

What would you pay for the most perfect Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 in the world? Not a nut-and-bolt restoration, not a customized one, but a factory original 1978 FJ40 that’s spent all of its life in good hands. Right now, it seems the price is in the six figures.

This green FJ40, currently up at BringATrailer.com, has only done a little over 5,000 miles in its lifetime. When it was just one year old and barely used, the first owner decided to store it in his warehouse. A carpet supplier, he built a special carpet-lined crate for it and hoisted it onto the warehouse wall as a source of inspiration — he planned to take it down someday and tour all the U.S. national parks in it.

The moral of that story is: Live for today. The owner passed away in 2000 before he could fulfill his dream.

The FJ40 ended up being sold by the man’s family to noted Land Cruiser restorer Jonathan Ward, who gave it its first service in more than 20 years and sold it to a friend. Now the truck is again for sale, and it’s as perfect as they come.

According to Ward, who runs the ICON and TLC4x4 shops, the FJ40 is in “absurd original condition, with all original finishes, and not any signs of rust. This is considered the nicest example known in the world by experts in the marque.” We would take his word for that, with Ward having years and years of experience putting these Toyotas right again. Just late last year, we ran a review of an ICON-customized FJ, a nearly $ 200,000 restomod; Ward can take a rough but ready example and do it up the way a paying customer desires. But the 5,265-mile FJ40 on BAT is otherwise absolutely stock, except for an aftermarket A/C system having been fitted in 2000 – and even that was carried out in an easily reversible fashion.

The bidding at BAT has taken a sharp turn, as the first bids for the truck came in at a lowly $ 8k and $ 9k, and the next at $ 84k and $ 100k! With a couple days still left in the auction, we can’t wait to see where this FJ40 ends up. But a six-figure price should guarantee it will continue to be taken care of.

Arsenal vs West Brom: Best snaps as Gunners wear red shorts for first time since 1978 https://briefnews.eu/arsenal-vs-west-brom-best-snaps-as-gunners-wear-red-shorts-for-first-time-since-1978/ https://briefnews.eu/arsenal-vs-west-brom-best-snaps-as-gunners-wear-red-shorts-for-first-time-since-1978/#respond Sun, 31 Dec 2017 18:18:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/arsenal-vs-west-brom-best-snaps-as-gunners-wear-red-shorts-for-first-time-since-1978/

Arsenal opted to wear red shorts for the first time in 30 years for their away trip to West Brom.

Their usual white shorts would have clashed with the Baggies’ and the Gunners didn’t want to mix their home, away and third kits to accomodate Premier League rules.

Instead, the players were given red shorts for the game, a common occurance in the 1970s to avoid similar clashes.

The shorts won’t be available to buy and aren’t expected to be used again anytime soon.

Take a look through the gallery to reveal the best snaps of Arsenal stars wearing red shorts.

Junkyard Gem: 1978 Buick Skyhawk https://briefnews.eu/junkyard-gem-1978-buick-skyhawk/ https://briefnews.eu/junkyard-gem-1978-buick-skyhawk/#respond Sun, 10 Sep 2017 21:14:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/junkyard-gem-1978-buick-skyhawk/ Before the Buick Skyhawk was a front-wheel-drive rebadged Chevy Cavalier, it was a rear-wheel-drive rebadged Chevy Monza (itself based on the Chevy Vega). Built for the 1975 through 1980 model years, the Skyhawk was a sleek-looking sporty hatchback, and it sold reasonably well. You won’t see many today, but I spotted this well-preserved ’78 in a San Francisco Bay Area self-service wrecking yard.

Every first-generation Skyhawk ever made had the 3.8-liter Buick V6 as its powerplant, while its Chevrolet Monza, Oldsmobile Starfire, and Pontiac Sunbird siblings could be had with a grab bag of I4, V6, and V8 engines. This 3.8 made 105 horsepower, which made for acceptable-in-1978 performance in a 2,707-pound car.

The Skyhawk got a lot more fake leather, fake wood, and richly textured plastic than its Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac counterparts.

Speedometers in 1978-model-year American-market cars were allowed to go up to 85 mph, but this one stops at 80. Possibly this was to preserve the symmetry of the gauge layout. The slippery Skyhawk could go well over 80 on level ground, even with just barely over 100 horses.

This one came to California via Tennessee. The lack of rust suggests that most of its life was spent in the Pacific Time Zone.

Buick, to the free spirit!

The world sits on the cusp of being able to create designer babies that would allow parents to predetermine their child’s sex, eye color, height, health conditions, and a plethora of other genetic variabilities. With that being said, it is hard to imagine that only 38-years ago, the world was introduced to its first test tube baby.

On July 25, 1978, at Oldham and District General Hospital in Manchester, England, Louise Joy Brown, weighing five pounds and 12 ounces, entered the world. Louise was living proof that conception no longer needed to be contained to needing to be accomplished inside of a female’s body.

Just like most married couples in the 70s, Lesley and Peter Brown wanted to have a child. For many years, the Browns tried to conceive in the natural way, but Lesley was not able to become pregnant. It was discovered that Lesley had a medical issue which had rendered her infertile. Her fallopian tubes were blocked. At this point in history, when a couple was not able to have a child through sexual intercourse, adoption was their only other option. For the Browns, a new, experimental procedure gave them a glimmer of hope. The procedure was called in vitro fertilization.

Explaining to the Browns how in vitro fertilization was going to work must have sounded like science fiction. The doctor explained that an egg that had reached maturity was going to be harvested from one of Lesley’s ovaries. Peter was going to need to provide a sperm sample. Lesley’s egg and Peter’s sperm were going to put into a Petri dish where they would be joined together in order to form a zygote. It is this part of the procedure that gave rise to the nickname of test tube baby due to the baby being conceived in a science laboratory.

As the newly formed zygote was in the Petri dish, it was nourished with various proteins and growth factors in order to make sure it stayed healthy for implantation into Lesley’s uterus. A few days after conception occurred in the lab, the zygote was placed inside Lesley’s uterus. Once the zygote successfully attached itself to Lesley’s endometrium, the zygote became an embryo.

When it was confirmed that Lesley had a successful implantation and was pregnant, the Brown’s lives became one of public condemnation. The main reason that the family was looked at in a negative light was due to the unnatural way that this pregnancy had occurred. Leading the charge in this aspect were those in the religious community. Many felt that if it was not possible for Lesley to become pregnant then she should not have subverted the will of God and turned to science to make it happen. For doctors, it was questionable as to whether or not they should have the power and ability to play God in the lab.

The concept and procedure for in vitro fertilization occurred in the late 60s. Lesley’s fertilization team of Doctor Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards were the pioneers of the groundbreaking fertility method. It was not until 2010 that Steptoe and Edwards were awarded the Nobel Prize for their contribution to medicine.

From 1978 to 2016, just shy of two generations of time have passed and in vitro fertilization is quite a common practice in the fertility field. The success rate for in vitro fertilization has drastically increased as well in the last couple of decades. As stated earlier, the world is preparing for the next groundbreaking step in reproductive medicine.

Similar to in vitro fertilization, moral and ethical questions will be asked as to if humans should be able to have this much power and control in programming the next few generations of the human race. The science fiction movie, Gattaca, may quickly become science fact.

Do you remember when the first test tube baby was born? What do you think about the future of reproductive medicine?
