The Exorcist was not your average blockbuster film. Called “the greatest horror film of all time” by many, it has remained unparalleled in terms of its initial reception, its cultural impact and its subsequent adoption into the American film canon. With a worldwide gross of over $ 440 million, countless magazine covers and Evangelist preacher Billy Graham proclaiming “the Devil is in every frame,” it was a phenomenon. On its release Variety called the film “pure cinematic terror” and the New York Daily News proclaimed it “a brilliantly successful horror movie.” Pauline Kael, writing for the New Yorker, grudgingly admitted that, “The Exorcist is too ugly a phenomenon to take lightly.”

Based on William Peter Blatty’s book of the same name, The Exorcist was inspired by an account of a real-life exorcism Blatty had heard of while attending Georgetown University in 1949. It would take him another two decades to write and publish the book but, remembering the incident which inspired it, he decided to use Georgetown, Washington as a setting for the screenplay.

Both the book and the film follow elderly Jesuit priest Father Merrin (Max Von Sydow) who, while on an archaeological dig in Iraq, uncovers an ancient amulet.…

Street battles broke out between police and protesters in Athens at a march marking the 1973 student uprising, which helped topple the military junta.

The annual protest, which took place on Friday, was peaceful for the most part, as around 10,000 protesters stopped by the Athens Polytechnic University in the afternoon to lay flowers and honor the memory of those killed in the 1973 uprising before marching towards the US embassy. Demonstrators used the rally to voice more contemporary grievances, such as the policy of austerity that has left hundreds of thousands of Greeks unemployed over the past few years. Marchers held up banners reading “We will live freely” and “No pensioner will be fired!”

However, as proceedings drew to a close, a group of masked youths started hurling petrol bombs at police in the central Exarchia district of the city. Officers responded by firing tear gas in an effort to disperse the crowd. At least one bystander was injured in the commotion; a woman who had to be treated for burns after being hit in the leg with a flare.

Thousands of extra officers had been deployed to the streets of Athens in anticipation of Friday’s march, while metro stations were closed and shopkeepers rolled down their shutters to protect their storefronts.

The Greek military junta took power in a 1967 coup. With US backing, the junta cracked down on civil rights, dissolved all political parties, and rounded up and tortured suspected leftists. University students faced being conscripted by the army, while their unions were run by junta-appointed leaders. On November 14, 1973, students barricaded themselves inside the Athens Polytechnic University in protest, setting up their own radio station on-site, where they began broadcasting anti-junta messages. Three days later, military tanks rolled through the university gates. Over the course of the operation, some 24 students were killed.

Although the student uprising was crushed, the events of November 17 set in motion a series of events that precipitated the toppling of the dictatorship during the following year.

How many episodes are there of Prime Suspect 1973?

In total there will be six episodes of Prime Suspect 1973, with the series finale airing on Thursday April 6.

This week’s episode (the fourth in the series) sees Tennison asked to make a decision which could have huge repercussions for her future.

Terrence O’Duncie is brought into the station following his arrest, but he has been badly beaten, and Gibbs is on the hook for the attack.

A second body is discovered in the canal, leading Bradfield to suspect that they might be looking at a double murder.

Meanwhile, Clifford Bentley and his sons start digging from the café to the bank, but they risk getting caught when David fails to notice the police outside.

Will Prime Suspect 1973 return for season 2?

has not yet announced whether there will be another series of Prime Suspect 1973, which is based on Lynda La Plante’s novel Tennison.

However fans can follow the next chapter of Jane’s adventures in La Plante’s 2016 sequel Hidden Killers.

The book sees Tennison promoted to detective after catching a rapist by posing as a “decoy prostitute”.

Her first call-out is the death of a mother who seemingly drowned in the bath – although Jane suspects that she may have been murdered.

The third book in the Tennison series, Good Friday, will be released on September 7, 2017. The author has said that there will be at least one more story to follow.

La Plante wrote the original Prime Suspect TV series in the 1990s, but left after the third season due to a storyline which saw Tennison become an alcoholic. 

The author explained: “I would not have let her be a drunk. I thought she’d fought too hard. I didn’t want to see the final series.”

La Plante has said that she wrote Tennison to “regain control” over the character she created over 20 years ago.

She was originally slated to write the scripts for Prime Suspect 1973, but stepped away from the show before it went into production.

She told Waitrose Weekend magazine that her decision to quit the ITV series was “a sad one, more than anything else really.”

The series followed a younger Jane Tennison, originally played by Helen Mirren, during her early days in the Metropolitan Police. 

From the electrifying soundtrack to Stefanie Martini’s effortlessly stunning display at the iconic detective, Prime Suspect 1973 was a huge hit with those watching at home. 

However, midway through the opening instalment of the series’ opening episode, fans were swiftly put off by several factual errors; the biggest coming when Jane arrived at a hospital which didn’t actually exist. 

“Poor research prime suspect no Homerton hospital in 1973 #PrimeSuspect1973 Hackney hospital!!!” fumed one audience member, as another raged: “No Homerton Hospital in 1973 #PrimeSuspect1973 Homerton opened in 1986 it would have been the old Hackney Hospital.”

This comical viewer teased: “Enjoying spotting the historical inaccuracies, if nothing else!  #PrimeSuspect1973.”

The original Prime Suspect, written by Lynda La Plante, ran from 1991 to 2006 and won eight BAFTAs – including four for Helen, 71, as Best Leading Actress. 

Prime Suspect 1973 continues next Thursday at 9pm on ITV.
