“Despite the declared advantages of cryptocurrencies (security, anonymity, and de-regulation), the same pros have become cons that the currency should not have,” TeleTrade financial consultant Mikhail Grachev told RT.

Anonymity makes it possible to pay for prohibited assets – drugs, weapons, says the analyst. The lack of regulation leads to a lack of responsibility, and if any controversial issue arises, it will hang in the air, he added.

“And the most important argument is that bitcoin, etherium and others cryptocurrencies, are quoted in US dollars, and no one has given up on the greenback in favor of a combination of digital symbols,” Grachev said.

The cryptocurrency market is going to crash, when people who invested on the dawn of the boom, will cash out, says the analyst.

“Cryptocurrencies can repeat the history of the 1929 stock market crash. Some say the recent collapse of bitcoin is attributed to the cancellation of its hardfork (SegWit2x), others say investors are fleeing bitcoin and buying bitcoin cash. It is possible that the year will close at levels near BTCUSD $ 7,500,” Grachev said.

Mikhail Mashchenko, an analyst at the social network for investors eToro in Russia and CIS has the opposite view. He is sure virtual money is here to stay.

The cryptocurrency market is very deep, and different currencies offer different solutions for investors, it is not only about bitcoin.

“IOTA crypto is about microtransactions without commissions. Ethereum is good for “smart contracts,” dash and the like are autonomous and so on. Bitcoin is used not only as a financial asset or as a means of exchange, but also as an alternative currency necessary for investing in competitive and complementary projects of the cryptocurrency industry,” he told RT.

The analyst is sure that as long as blockchain-based technologies continue to emerge, the industry will grow and bitcoin has a bright future.

Bitcoin is also highly unlikely to end like the Wall Street Crash of 1929, and doesn’t resemble other stock market crashes either, insists Mashchenko.

“Comparing bitcoins with the bubbles of the past is pointless: nothing like this has happened. Tulip Mania is different. Tulips were luxury goods for a narrow circle of people, and not for widespread use. The crises of 1929 and 2008 are very similar to each other, but have nothing to do with cryptocurrencies,” he said.

The dot-com bubble is more or less close to cryptocurrencies, the analyst admits, but the best companies of the dot-com era of 1997-2001 are prospering in 2017, having significantly increased their market cap.

However, bitcoin can be a very risky for first-time investors, the analyst warns.

“They do not know the elementary rules of trading and therefore buy at the highest prices and close their positions in panic at the slightest drop. A huge percentage of these people will lose money.”

A 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer has won one of the highest awards in the classic-car world, the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Best of Show trophy.

Owned by collector Bruce McCaw of Bellevue, Washington, the prewar roadster has an illustrious history and a strong connection to a racing pedigree. It’s the eighth Mercedes-Benz to win the award; the most recent was a 1928 680s that won Best of Show in 2012.

The car’s story began in London, where it started off as a Mercedes-Benz Model S roadster but was then upgraded to Super Sports (SS) specification with a larger engine, a supercharged 7.0-liter inline-six. Next came a full outfitting by Barker of London, a noted British coachbuilder. Francis Curzon, the 5th Earl Howe—a racing driver who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1931—was the original owner of the car. He was also the co-founder of the legendary British Racing Drivers’ Club.

The beautiful blue roadster was part of the Mercedes-Benz Prewar category at the Concours d’Elegance. It’s said to retain its original lights and chrome wheels, and its unusually shaped running boards and low-cut doors are among its most distinctive design features.

PEBBLE BEACH – A gorgeous silver and blue 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer captured the coveted Best of Show award Sunday afternoon at the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’ELegance. Owned by Bruce McCaw, the German icon beat out a prestigious field comprised of 200 entries from around the world.

The Mercedes‘ victory capped a beautiful day spent celebrating vintage cars on the famed 18th fairway of the Pebble Beach Links. Gray skies gave way to a sun-drenched afternoon as well-heeled enthusiasts mingled with celebrities like former NFL star Michael Strahan and comedian Jay Leno. The 67th edition of arguably the most distinguished car show in the world also awarded honors in individual classes, and this year the featured sections included Ferrari’s major race winners, Ferrari’s One-Off Speciales and American Dream Cars of the 1960s.

The day began before the sun rose as hundreds of hearty enthusiasts gathered to watch the cars drive onto the fairway – an insider event that’s becoming increasingly popular – and ended with the traditional winner’s drive onto the stand in front of the famous Lodge at Pebble Beach.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Sometimes it seems like the impassioned people who want to preserve Confederate monuments across the South are reading a different history book than the rest of the nation.

In fact, they are.

A decades-old booklet called the “Confederate Catechism” lays out core beliefs of Southern heritage groups including the Sons of Confederate Veterans, which sells the book and has defended rebel monuments in New Orleans and elsewhere. Some of those monuments were erected by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, which has programs to educate children on its version of Southern history.

Here is a look at Confederate catechisms — what they teach, how they developed and how they are used today:

WHAT WAS THE CIVIL WAR ABOUT?

Certainly not slavery, according to the most popular version of “A Confederate Catechism,” which is promoted by the Sons of Confederate Veterans on its website.

“Both from the standpoint of the Constitution and sound statesmanship, it was not slavery, but the vindictive, intemperate anti-slavery movement that was at the bottom of all the troubles,” states the 12-page text, written in question-and-answer form.

Such claims don’t square with much of today’s scholarship. To critics, they seem at odds with the secession documents issued by Southern states, some of which specifically mentioned slavery as a reason for the dispute that led to formation of the Confederate States of America in 1861. Mississippi’s declaration said the state’s position was “thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery.”

The “anything but slavery” narrative is popular among Confederate sympathizers who maintain the war was about something other than maintaining the ability of white Southerners to own black people.

SO WHAT CAUSED THE WAR?

The catechism lays the blame on Abraham Lincoln. The 16th president of the United States brought on four years of bloodshed by rejecting the legal right of the 11 states of the Confederacy to leave the Union and sending troops into the South, it claims.

Abe Lincoln 1860Wikimedia CommonsFor emphasis, it states in all capital letters that the South: “… FOUGHT TO REPEL INVASION AND FOR SELF-GOVERNMENT, JUST AS THE FATHERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION HAD DONE.”

The guide even denies that the war began when Southern forces fired on Fort Sumter at Charleston, South Carolina, on April 12, 1861. Lincoln started the whole thing earlier by secretly attempting to land troops at Fort Pickens near Pensacola Beach, Florida, it says. Official histories published by the National Park Service disagree.

Carl Jones, chief of heritage operations for the Sons of Confederate Veterans, said the catechism is important but it’s almost too simplistic in explaining causes of the war, which he said included constitutional questions, religion and multiple other factors.

WHO CAME UP WITH THE CATECHISM?

The son of a U.S. president, oddly enough.

Lyon Gardiner Tyler, whose father was President John Tyler, is credited with writing the 1929 catechism promoted by the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Lyon Tyler, who spent much of his life in Virginia, was a prominent defender of the Confederate cause at a time when Southerners were pushing back against Northern histories of the conflict. While Tyler’s claims seem outside the accepted norm of modern historical scholarship to many, he served as president of the College of William and Mary before his death in 1935.

IS ANYONE STILL PAYING ATTENTION TO THESE IDEAS?

Yes.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy has an arm called The Children of the Confederacy, with young members who are “encouraged to recite basic beliefs and elements of Confederate history,” according to the group’s website, which also touts Confederate catechisms. The organization even has officers whose duties include spreading the Southern gospel.

Many of the people who gathered to wave Confederate battle flags in New Orleans as monuments were being removed likely haven’t heard of the catechisms. But the Sons of Confederate Veterans will sell them a reproduction of Tyler’s version for $ 5: It’s available on the group’s website.

“(Tyler) wrote this pamphlet to help correct the propaganda about the South, and his father, by Northern writers and publishers. It is short, concise and should be read by every student, not only in the South, but in the United States,” the sales site states.
