A man who died after falling from the 18th floor of an apartment building has been identified as the chief financial officer of Bed Bath & Beyond, the New York Post reported.
Gustavo Arnal, 52, fell from the 18th floor of the tower on Leonard Street in Manhattan's tony Tribeca neighborhood around noon Friday, the New York Police Department confirmed to Insider.
The New York Post reported, citing law-enforcement sources, that Arnal's wife was home at the time and that he "jumped" from the apartment without saying anything or leaving a note explaining.
Arnal joined Bed Bath & Beyond in 2020 after serving as Avon's finance chief for more than a year. Arnal had held a senior position at Walgreens Boots Alliance and Procter & Gamble before joining the cosmetics company.
Last month, Arnal sold about 42,000 shares in the retailer for about $ 1 million, according to MarketBeat.com. He also had been named in an insider trading and securities fraud lawsuit less than two weeks before his death, court documents show.
The death comes days after Bed Bath & Beyond announced plans to close about 150 stores and cut its workforce by a fifth in a bid to revive its fortunes.
The company told investors on a call on Wednesday that it would shift away from own-brands and start offering more labels and that it had secured loans from JPMorgan and Sixth Street Partners.
The retailer's shares have become a "meme stock" like GameStop and fluctuated considerably in recent months. The chief executive, Mark Tritton, was ousted in June and replaced by board member Sue Gove.
Bed Bath & Beyond and Arnal's family members did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Over the years, several rare items have been brought along to the Roadshow, some have been given incredible valuations while others have fallen short if they have been restored. During series 39 of Antiques Roadshow which visited Tewkesbury Abbey, expert Hilary Kay took a closer look at an incredibly rare 18th-century dress. But how much was it worth?
“Looking at this dress, I can picture the scene; one misty morning, a woman walking through the Abbey meadows. It’s wonderful. Is it a family heirloom?” Hilary asked and the guest replied: “No, no.”
“So what is it?” The expert probed.
“It was given to me by a friend in the 1960s and she just gave it to me, I just had a daughter and I think she might be interested later on to dress up in it,” the owner explained.
“And did your dress up in it?” Hilary remarked.

“No, it’s never been touched. I’ve never seen it out,” the guest confessed to Hilary.
Shocked by her admission, Hilary replied: “You’ve never seen it out? This is the first time you’ve actually seen it? How do you think it looks?”
“Very nice. It’s beautiful,” the lady said and then revealed she kept it “in a box or in a drawer”.
Hilary then took a closer look at the dress and explained: “Well, lets talk about what it is.
“It’s what known as a sack back robe, people might say it’s in complete, it’s got an open front. Well it was an open robe and you would wear a very beautiful – you call them petticoats but it was an underskirt really.
“The decorations on it are also rather wonderful. You’ve got at the front here these little dangling hassles and then down each side you’ve got raised pockets almost, which have got a little piece of wool inside, a bit like a piece of cotton wool, but it’s real wool inside this panel here to give it a 3D view,” she told the lady.
“What I’d like to do, if the breeze will allow us, I would just like to turn it around, gently and we can see the back here which gives it it’s other name – the sack back robe.”
BBC One viewer saw Hilary turn the dress around so she could examine the details the back of the gown had to offer.
Hilary said: “You’ve got pleats running from the shoulder blades, box pleats, running all the way down to the bottom which gives it a sort of train effect.
“So, when you wore this, you were making really quite a statement.
“What I also like very much is these scalloped edges, particularly on the sleeves here.
“When one looks at a dress like this, one has to appreciate this is an extraordinary survivor. Painted fabrics are notoriously difficult to keep and the fact that it’s been kept in a box for so long, would perhaps explain why it hasn’t just fallen to pieces which is so often the fate.
“It is incredibly rare survivor,” Hilary remarked.
“It’s beautiful, it’s a lovely design and perhaps more importantly, a dress like this is of huge demand internationally by collectors and museums.
The “bomb cyclone” that battered the north-east of the United States in the past week was not the proverbial ill wind. It blasted away enough sand to reveal the wreckage of a ship that dates back to the 1700s.
Huge waves dredged up what remains of the historic ship at Short Sands Beach in York, Maine. The city’s police department shared photos of the wreck on its Facebook page. “Every once in a while after a storm the ocean moves enough sand for it to be seen,” the police wrote.
Historian Sharon Cummins writes in local website Seacoast Online that the wreck was first seen in 1958, but it was quickly swallowed again by the sands. It reappears occasionally after particularly strong storms.
Archaeologist Leith Smith said the 15-meter-long and four-meter-wide ship is believed to be a coastal trading vessel that was used between 1750 and 1850. “It was the 18-wheeler of the day,” Smith told CNN.

New research indicates that the wreckage may have been from a ship called the ‘Industry,’ which set sail in 1769. “It was probably driven on shore by a storm and pushed so far on the sand that they couldn’t refloat it,” he said.
The Maine Historic Preservation Commission researcher plans to do more testing on the wreck before it is once again reclaimed by the sands of time.

Honda’s North American unit and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed on Tuesday that a ruptured Takata airbag inflator in a Honda Civic caused the death of the driver on July 10.
The 2004 model car involved in the crash in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was under recall but had not received the repair, the company said, adding that the ruptured inflator in the vehicle was not the original one installed.
Takata air bag inflators have been linked to at least 18 deaths and 180 injuries around the world.
Honda has so far removed over 100,000 inflators from salvage yards and has requested that major online auction sites prohibit and stop the sale of affected airbags.

1958 Ferrari 335 Sport Scaglietti Spyder

Three Ferrari 335 Sport Spyders with V12, 4-liter engines were built in 1957 — and then Luigi Chinetti persuaded Enzo Ferrari to build one more. This Spyder (chassis 0764) was completed by Scaglietti at the end of 1958. It was first presented at the New York Auto Show and was soon nicknamed the “Super Testa Rossa.” Alan Connell purchased the car and raced it at Road America, Watkins Glen, Daytona and Nassau in 1959 and 1960. Thereafter it was owned, driven and enjoyed by several different collectors, and in 1990 it was notably lent to Phil Hill to drive in the Mille Miglia Storica. The current owner acquired the Spyder in 2013.
1967 Ferrari 412 P Competizione

To replace the successful Ferrari P3, the factory developed the intermediate 412 P race car — also known as the P3/4. Designed by Mauro Forghieri, the 412 P features an aluminum body that owes its shape to the Ferrari wind tunnel, and the car develops 420 bhp due to its 4-liter, V12 engine with six Weber carburetors. This 412 P (chassis 0850) was purchased by the Ecurie Nationale Belge team of Jacques Swaters, and it raced in bright yellow livery at various events in 1967 and 1968. It finished second overall at the 1,000-km Race at Montlhéry in 1967, and it won the Cote de Condroz and Cote de la Roche Hill Climbs in 1968. The car was also entered in the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona when Ferraris famously finished 1-2-3. After its racing days concluded at the end of 1968, the 412 P was converted to street use for Dean Martin, Jr. and was often seen on roads around Hollywood. It is shown here at Pebble Beach for the first time since being restored to its original racing specification.
1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Scaglietta Spyder

This Ferrari (chassis 0728) is one of the most famous of all Testa Rossas. It finished first overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1958 driven by Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien, and it was third overall at that year’s Targa Florio driven by Mike Hawthorn and Wolfgang von Trips. It is an original left-hand-drive Ferrari team car with outside door hinges and a fresh-air vent on the cowl (similar to 0666 TR). After the 1958 Targa Florio race, the car was converted at the Ferrari factory; the original pontoon fenders were removed for an envelope body. Several privateers later raced the car with a variety of different engines, as was normal at the time. It was sold eventually to Ferrari collector Pierre Bardinon in France, who reunited the car with its original engine. The current owner acquired the car in 2012.
1959 Ferrari 250 TR59/60 Fantuzzi Spyder

This Ferrari (chassis 0774 TR) was the fifth and final 250 TR59 constructed in 1959. It made its debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans driven by Jean Behra and Dan Gurney, and it also ran in the Tourist Trophy at Goodwood driven by Phil Hill. After being updated in 1960 to new TR59/60 specifications, it won in its first time out at the Buenos Aires 1,000-km driven by Phil Hill and Cliff Allison. That June, Olivier Gendebien and Paul Frère drove the car to victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It then moved to the United States where it was briefly raced again by Phil Hill. Following its own racing career, the car’s V12 engine was used for a time in another racing car. This car and engine were reunited in the 1980s, when owned by Paul Pappalardo, and restored to its 1960 Le Mans–winning specifications. It was then raced throughout the 1990s. The current owner bought the car in 2004 and showed it at Pebble Beach in 2009 along with the other three surviving TR59/60s.
1963 Ferrari 250 GTO Scaglietti Berlinetta

This Ferrari 250 GTO (chassis 4293GT) was first sold to Jacques Swaters of Ecurie Francorchamps in April 1963, and it enjoyed a short but spectacular racing career. In its first race at Spa in May 1963, the car was driven to first place by Willy Mairesse. A month later at Le Mans, it finished first in class and second overall driven by Jean Blaton and Gerhard Langlois van Ophem. Then, seeking to prove in true GT style that the car was just as good on the road as on a race course, Blaton and Ophem set off in the GTO to celebrate their success in the nightclubs of Paris. Their Le Mans win was followed by another outright win at Zolder and a first in class at Reims. Thanks to its comparatively short but spectacular race history, this car is one of the most original GTOs in existence.
1964 Ferrari 250 LM Scaglietta Berlinetta

The Ferrari 250 LM, first seen at the Paris Automobile Show in October 1963, was built as the replacement for the 250 GTO to compete in the GT category of sports car racing, but Ferrari produced only 32 250 LMs, so the car was forced to compete as a sports prototype. Bodied by Scaglietti and featuring Ferrari’s first ever mid-engined layout, the 250 LM proved to be an excellent competitor on the racetrack, beginning its career with a victory in the Reims 12 Hours in July 1964 where it competed for the Maranello Concessionaires and was driven by Graham Hill and Jo Bonnier. This car (chassis 5893) went one better; in the hands of Jochen Rindt and Masten Gregory driving for Luigi Chinetti’s NART racing team, it was the last Ferrari to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, taking the crown in 1965. It raced for another five years in long-distance races at Daytona and again at Le Mans, then it was officially retired. It is here today thanks to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.
1954 Ferrari 375 MM Pinin Farina Berlinetta

First shown at the 1954 Paris Auto Salon, this unique Ferrari 375 MM Berlinetta (chassis 0456AM) is fitted with a special body designed and constructed by Pinin Farina. Original carrozzeria records state that this car was used as the styling study for the 275 GTB built ten years later. Among its most striking features are the rotating headlights and the fins on the rear fenders. This car was ordered by film director Roberto Rossellini for his wife, Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman, and even though she never took delivery of the car, it is still referred to as the “Bergman Coupe.” Rossellini owned the car between 1954 and 1957, and then it went to the United States. This famous Ferrari has been with its current owner for 39 years. It recently participated in the 1,500-mile Pebble Beach Motoring Classic.

Google’s annual conference touched on all the zeitgeisty terms you’d have expected: More voice assistant features, artificial intelligence, visual search powered by deep learning and a whole lot more.
The opening day of Google’s developer event focused on putting more AI everywhere — in your camera with Google Lens, in your phone/car/TV/speaker with Google Assistant — and connecting virtual reality to mixed reality with Daydream. It probably sounds like a lot, because it is, but we boiled down the speech to a 15-minute video with all the highlights, so click here and get acquainted with the Google-y new world we’re living in.
Google Lens is a powerful, AI-driven visual search app
Google Lens is a broad term that encompasses all kinds of vision-based computing skills. It can recognize what’s going on in photos or videos and offer up clever shortcuts you might want to use. For instance, point your phone at a flower and Google Lens will tell you, on the screen, which type of flower it is, or aim the camera at a restaurant sign to see reviews and other information pop up. The least sexy application we saw on stage might be the most useful: Point the camera at a WiFi router’s name and password, and Google will apparently do the connecting for you. The new system will arrive in Google Photos and Assistant first, later this year.
Google Assistant gets smarter and lives in more places (like your iPhone)
For all the talk about artificial intelligence, most of us will experience Google’s work in the area via Google Assistant. The smart helper is opening up to app developers so it can do more things — like take a conversational delivery order — and accept typed input for your more private inquiries. iPhone owners can give it a spin outside of Allo, thanks to a new standalone app that (at least so far) narrowly edges out Apple’s Siri in terms of usefulness.
We still don’t know what the “O” is for, but we do know a lot more about what Google is concentrating on this time around. Other than accelerating boot time, Android O has new limits for apps that are supposed to keep them from draining your battery and wasting resources while running in the background. There’s some AI secret sauce in there, with hardware-accelerated neural network APIs that can figure things out without shifting your private data to the cloud, and a smart copy-paste feature that easily figures out which text is important. Also, new notification dots bring alerts out of the top panel, and there are big emoji updates.
The most important news, though, is that you can try it out right now on various Nexus and Pixel devices.
Google Home is getting proactive assistance and visual responses
Google Home was a decent first stab at taking on Amazon’s Echo, but there’s clearly room for improvement. Today, the company revealed that its smart speaker will soon be able to give you proactive notifications, like alerting you to traffic delays ahead of upcoming appointments. Google Home will light up to let you know it has an alert for you, so it thankfully won’t just start talking without any prompting.
Tesla turned down Uber’s self-driving partnership offer
A new book on Uber by Fortune’s Adam Lashinsky is coming out soon, but Bloomberg has revealed one juicy anecdote ahead of time. CEO Travis Kalanick reportedly called up Tesla boss Elon Musk to propose a partnership on self-driving cars, but Musk rebuffed the offer and even tried to talk him out of it. Kalanick stated in the book. “Elon spent the rest of the call convincing me that it’s too far out, and it’s not realistic, that I should just stick to what we do best and be focused, or I’m going to fuck it all up. That’s when I knew Tesla was competing.”
Samsung DeX review: The impressive, unnecessary, phone-powered PC
If you already own a Galaxy S8 or S8 Plus, then Samsung’s DeX dock is a fascinating proposition. For $ 150, you could cobble together a system that acts an awful lot like a PC. Mobile Editor Chris Velazco says the interface is familiar and overall performance is pretty impressive. The experience isn’t without its problems, though. There are a limited number of apps optimized for DeX and gathering up all the requisite parts could get pricey too, if you don’t already have a spare keyboard, mouse and monitor lying around. DeX blurs the line between smartphone and PC better than any other attempt he has seen — he’s just not convinced that many people will find it genuinely useful.
Amazon’s Fire tablets get a little thinner and a little faster
There’s nothing too drastic coming with Amazon’s Fire tablet update: the Fire 7 gets a thinner and lighter chassis and an improved 7-inch IPS display. Battery life and chip performance have also been improved, not to mention the addition of voice assistant Alexa. Amazon’s done even less to the Fire HD 8, throwing in faster, more power-efficient internals but leaving everything else the same. The device’s biggest new feature may be the $ 10 reduction compared to the last model.
Late last year, PC and PS4 gamers were treated to an surreal rhythm experience when Thumper asked them to pilot a metallic scarab down a highway of intimidating, abstract set pieces. The game is as bizarre as it is intense — but timing movements to the game’s fast-paced soundtrack and be incredibly satisfying, too. Soon, you’ll be able to attain that satisfaction on the go: the game’s developer has announced that the Nintendo Switch version will be available on the eShop in just two weeks.
Naturally, the Nintendo Switch version of Thumper won’t have the virtual reality mode found on the PS4 and PC version of the game, but the developer says it will run at a smooth 60fps in both 720p in portable mode and 1080p on televisions. The game also boasts support for the Switch’s HD Rumble feature, which promises a more nuanced force feedback experience than on other platforms. The game will be available for Nintendo Switch users on May 18th. There’s no word yet for the promised Xbox One version, but if you can’t stand the wait, you can always pick up the soundtrack on Vinyl.

Hey, good morning!
We’re warming up for F8. Yep, Facebook’s big annual event kicks off today and it looks like the company has an awful lot planned to show us. Meanwhile, Netflix has explained why it continues to pay for Adam Sandler’s creative output and Verizon made its own smartwatch for some reason. Oh, and here’s a DIY distillery.
What to expect from Facebook’s annual developer conference
2017 marks the 10th anniversary of F8, and you know that CEO Mark Zuckerberg will want to show off just how far Facebook has come in the past ten years. Covering more Messenger, those Live woes and maybe even a bunch of hardware, here’s a look at what we’ll hopefully see in the days ahead.
There’s such a thing as a budget gaming laptop?
Origin’s EON15-S laptop has always straddled the line between gaming performance and portability, and this year’s model does that again, but for a bit less cash. For 2017, the PC maker has added NVIDIA’s newish 4GB 1050 Ti graphics card, a model that gives it a (very) mild speed bump over last year’s 980M-based EON15-S. That’s squeezed into a 1-inch, 5-pound case, and costs $ 999 for the cheapest configuration. However, there’s no high-res screen option this time around — you’re stuck with a 15.6-inch 1,920 x 1,080 IPS panel.
Netflix explains why it keeps paying Adam Sandler for movies
Yesterday Netflix revealed its quarterly earnings, and said it is close to having 100 million streaming customers. But the most surprising statistic had to be news that subscribers have streamed half a billion hours of Adam Sandler movies since the debut of The Original 6.
Tesla cuts the price on its entry-level Model S by $ 5,000
Recently, Tesla dropped the cheapest version of its Model S and now it’s followed up by lowering the price of the current entry-level edition. The 75 and 75D are still $ 1,500 more than the 60/60D was, even after a $ 5k price cut, but they offer more range and now come standard with features like a glass roof and automatic rear power liftgate.
Marriott, Hilton and Hyatt take the fight to Airbnb via lobbyists
Inevitably, hotels were going to fight back against “home sharing” apps, and a New York Times report says that time is now. Via lobbyist organizations, the hotel industry is apparently fighting on the “local, state and federal level” to rein in Airbnb and the rest with additional regulation and scrutiny (Of course, some would argue that scrutiny might be necessary).
Picobrew’s next goal: A safe and affordable DIY distillery
Picobrew has a new, cheaper countertop beer brewing system. That you already knew. But the company is now dipping its toes into distilling. The Picostill is an add on for the Pico Model C that turns that weird custom designed keg into a countertop distillery. Specifically it’s a reflux still that uses vacuum distillation, which doesn’t look as cool as a pot or column still, but makes far more efficient use of the space.
Go back to 1984 with Internet Archive’s Macintosh collection
Not content to sit on the sidelines, the Internet Archive recently resurrected something, too. This time, it’s a swath of apps, games and software from the original Macintosh circa 1984. That means stuff like Lode Runner, MacOS System 7.0.1, Microsoft BASIC 2.0 and Space Invaders are on offer in their pixelated, black-and-white glory. Just like the old days.
Verizon’s Android Wear 2.0 watch goes on sale May 11th
Verizon’s Android Wear 2.0 smartwatch broke from cover back in February with an scheduled launch for March. Well, that didn’t happen. Today, the wireless carrier announced that its Wear24 device would go on sale both in stores and online May 11th. If you’ll recall, the wearable is priced at $ 300 with a 2-year activation plus $ 5 month to tack one on to your data plan.
Cities: Skylines’ Mass Transit DLC releases May 18th. So much fun stuff! Here’s a trailer.
