(Reuters) — Samsung Electronics said on Friday its third-quarter operating profit likely nearly tripled from a year earlier to a new record, beating analyst estimates as strong memory chip prices fattened margins.

Samsung shares touched a fresh high of 2.74 million won soon after the market opened on Friday, on hopes for record 2017 earnings driven by soaring demand for memory chips with ever greater storage capacity.

“Memory chips have entered a brave new world. The rate of supply increase has slowed drastically, while demand has exceeded expectations, rapidly lifting prices,” said Kim Woon-ho, analyst at IBK Investment & Securities.

“Although the share price has recently seen steep jumps, it still doesn’t reflect all the forecast profit increases.”

Brisk sales of the latest Galaxy Note 8 smartphone, launched in mid-September, lifted mobile profit as Samsung recovered from last year’s costly withdrawal of the fire-prone Note 7 device, analysts said.

Samsung is also expected to announce a new shareholder return policy for the next three years as soon as the end of October, when it releases third-quarter results.

It is seen ramping up returns to a level higher than its current 50 percent of free cash flow, supporting its stock valuation, analysts said.

The Apple smartphone rival and global memory chip leader said third-quarter operating profit was likely 14.5 trillion won ($ 12.81 billion), compared with the 14.3 trillion won average of 20 analyst estimates in a Thomson Reuters poll.

Revenue likely rose 29.7 percent from a year earlier to 62 trillion won, versus the analysts’ average forecast of 62.1 trillion won.

Samsung did not elaborate on its July-September performance and will disclose detailed results at the end of October. Analysts have tipped its chip division to propel the firm to record overall profit.

Strong global demand for DRAM chips will continue to outpace supply in 2018 as new plants from Samsung and No. 2 memory chip maker SK Hynix are not expected to operate until 2019, while demand for NAND flash chips exceeded supply for six straight quarters as of last month, DRAMeXchange, a division of data provider TrendForce, said.

Growing sales of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) smartphone screens for new Apple smartphones also have supported forecasts of a new earnings record in the fourth quarter.

Pre-orders for the Note 8 hit the highest-ever for the Note series, Samsung previously said.

Samsung shares were trading down 0.8 percent at 0022 GMT as investors booked profits, while the broader market was flat.

An Australian startup revealed its flagship product, an earpiece that can interpret 8 different languages in real-time, at a United Nations event in Switzerland on Friday.

Lingmo International, a startup based in West Gosford north of Sydney, launched its TranslateOne2One earpiece at the UN’s Artificial Intelligence for Good Summit in Geneva, revealing that IBM Watson machine learning technology had been used for its algorithms.

Traditionally, converting one language to another orally in real-time is called “interpreting” whereas the term “translation” is reserved for processing text across languages with some delay. Lingmo founder Danny May, however, describes his product as performing “translation in real-time”.

“It’s a fully independent translation earpiece. And what I mean by independent is that it doesn’t require any connectivity to your phone by Bluetooth or wi-fi. A lot of our competitors do,” he told Business Insider.

TranslateOne2One can handle English (US and UK), Japanese, French, Chinese, Italian, Spanish, German and Portuguese.

May started his working life as a fully qualified plumber, before he entered the solar power industry. It was during this phase of his life, four years ago, that he encountered trouble on a business trip to China.

“My passport was stolen literally 4 hours after I landed,” he said.

“I went to a police officer and spoke to him using a competitor’s translation service and said ‘hello, how are you’. But it translated that as ‘hello, I love you’.”

The incident inspired him to create his own language conversion technology, which has taken an arduous 4 years to develop, as May didn’t want a word-for-word translator like the ones commonly seen on search engines.

“We’re moving away from that. We’re taking up to a 30-second block, [IBM] Watson then takes it and puts it into a coherent sentence,” he said, adding that field tests indicated people speak for about 15 seconds at a time.

The oral, rather than text, input was also a challenge.

“We really focused on the speech recognition side – for the simple reason that if the speech isn’t picked up correctly, then the translation will come back incorrect.”

After the algorithm was developed, the company turned its attention to the earpiece hardware, which May said was the “easy bit” that took only 12 months. The combination of the software and hardware is now undergoing beta testing and final aesthetic and ergonomic fine-tuning.

The startup is aiming for the consumer market, with May telling Business Insider that the TranslateOne2One is expected to be on the market for $ US179 ($ 237). Pre-sale orders are planned to start this week with first shipments scheduled for mid-July.
The interpreter is also downloadable as a smartphone app.

The final device has 3G mobile connectivity, meaning that it has machine learning capabilities when it’s connected to the internet. The quality of the interpretations will improve over time, according to May, especially if similar phrases and words are heard.

“On average we’re going for 85% accuracy. We’re moving away from word-for-word translations and taking [phrases] in context – and currently 85% accuracy is what we’re getting from doing field testing.”

Lingmo was bootstrapped for the first three years of existence, then in December it took in just under $ 250,000 from private angel investors. May told Business Insider that he was currently working on a second round of capital raising.

The company also had assistance from the IBM Global Entrepreneur programme, which it joined last October.

“It’s an absolute game-changer for the global translation market, offering significant potential for both commercial and social benefit, which we’ve only just begun to explore,” said IBM Watson Master Inventor Neil Sahota.

The airline’s growing low-cost long-haul UK network is expanding into Asia for the first time. 

From 28th September, Norwegian will operate four weekly flights, increasing to five in the winter, from London Gatwick to Singapore Changi Airport, voted the World’s Best Airport by passengers for five years in a row. 

Flights are now on sale on the website from £179 one way.

The new Singapore route will be operated on Norwegian’s new state-of-the-art 787 Dreamliner aircraft offering up to 344 seats in both economy and Premium cabins. 

It comes after the airline was been awarded the ‘World’s best low-cost long-haul airline’ for two consecutive years at the SkyTrax World Airline Awards.

Premium cabin fares are available from £699 one way which includes No1 Lounges access at Gatwick, spacious seating with more than a metre of legroom, complimentary meal service and a generous baggage allowance.

As one of the world’s leading centres for financial services, logistics and technology, Norwegian’s new route to Singapore opens up new opportunities for business and leisure travellers and access to the wider access Asia-Pacific. 

Norwegian will offer UK passengers an affordable way to access the cosmopolitan ‘Lion City’, which perfectly combines the old with the new – historic neighbourhoods and temples; picturesque beaches and parks; all bordered by modern skyscrapers offering a city lifestyle of shopping malls and fine dining.

Norwegian carries 5.2 million UK passengers each year from four UK airports, to more than 50 global destinations. 

The budget airline already offers affordable flights from London Gatwick to nine U.S destinations including the newly announced routes to Seattle and Denver.

The Singapore route will be operated by the UK subsidiary ‘Norwegian UK’ (NUK) which was established in 2015 to give the airline a stronger foothold in the UK market. 

The airline has one of the youngest aircraft fleets in the world with an average age of 3.6 years, and more than 200 new aircraft on order.
