After years of work, Respawn is nearly ready to show what its Star Wars game is all about. Lucasfilm has announced that EA and Respawn will formally reveal Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order at a Celebration Chicago panel on April 13th. The two are unsurprisingly shy about details, but you’ll meet a Padawan who survived Order 66 (the command to exterminate the Jedi) and experience what it’s like to live in an era where there are seemingly no Jedi left. You can expect “never-before-released” details of the game, Lucasfilm said, which isn’t hard when the game is largely a secret.

Fallen Order is due to launch in fall 2019.

The game has faced a lot of uncertainty in the three years since its announcement. EA bought Respawn in 2017, leading many to worry when the publisher had shut down Visceral and passed its Star Wars game along to EA Vancouver. The situation wasn’t helped when EA cancelled that game outright in 2019 — was Respawn’s title next on the chopping block? It clearly survived, though, and there’s a new sense of optimism given that Respawn’s other 2019 game, Apex Legends, has proven to be a hit.

1. Fear of the number 13 dates back some 4,000 years to the ancient Babylonians, who saw 12 as an auspicious number for its divisibility by 2, 3, 4 and 6, which was disrupted by 13.

2. Old Norse mythology told of the arrival of Loki as 13th guest at a Valhalla banquet which resulted in the death of the god Baldur.

3. Norse myth also associated the goddess Frigga, after whom Friday is named, with sorcery.

4. The link between Friday and the 13th came with medieval Christianity, linking the 13 present at the Last Supper with the Good Friday crucifixion.

5. Fear of Friday 13th is paraskevidekatriaphobia or friggatriskaidekaphobia

6. Every year has between one and three Friday the 13ths. This year has two; the other was in April.

7. The very rich US businessman Thomas Lawson wrote a novel Friday The Thirteenth in 1907…

8. …Lawson died on February 8, 1925. Five days later and he would have died on Friday the 13th.

9. In Italy, the unlucky day is traditionally said to be Friday the 17th, not the 13th.

10. Dutch insurance claims show fewer thefts, fires and accidents on Friday 13th than on other dates.

Friday the 13th ‘Morally OUTRAGED film critics tried to HARM Jason's box office’ with THIS https://briefnews.eu/friday-the-13th-morally-outraged-film-critics-tried-to-harm-jasons-box-office-with-this/ https://briefnews.eu/friday-the-13th-morally-outraged-film-critics-tried-to-harm-jasons-box-office-with-this/#respond Fri, 13 Apr 2018 10:11:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/friday-the-13th-morally-outraged-film-critics-tried-to-harm-jasons-box-office-with-this/

Aside from Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th is the most notorious slasher franchise out.

However 1981’s Part II featured so much “accumulative violence” that it faced opposition from the Motion Picture Association of America.

A number of scenes were taken out of the original cut just so it could be given an R rating.

Despite box office success, the Jason sequel received mainly negative reviews.

Acclaimed film critics Roger Ebert wrote in Chicago Sun-Times: “[Friday the 13th Part 2 is] a cross between the Mad Slasher and Dead teenager genres; about two dozen movies a year feature a mad killer going berserk, and they’re all about as bad as this one. Some have a little more plot, some have a little less. It doesn’t matter.”

Now has claimed that “morally outraged” Ebert and fellow critic Gene Siskel hated it so much they tried to harm the franchise’s box office takings by spoiling the films’ endings in their reviews.

The publication alleges Ebert’s hypocrisy for writing a Russ Meyer movie where teenagers take drugs and cut the head off a rock star.

Ebert tried to dismiss the Friday the 13th movies in 1984, claiming their message was: “It doesn’t matter if you have a new boyfriend or a new girlfriend, or you’ve got plans for the future.

“You can forget those plans, because you’re gonna wind up dead.”

Nevertheless The Sentinel defends the franchise, claiming the films are a reminder of our mortality and that we won’t always be young.

The writer argues: “Jason is death.

“Jason is your reminder that you won’t always be young.

“Jason is letting you know that while you’re partying and having fun, he’s hiding just passed the tree line, waiting. Inevitable.”

Flight news: This is how much money you could save by flying on Friday 13th https://briefnews.eu/flight-news-this-is-how-much-money-you-could-save-by-flying-on-friday-13th/ https://briefnews.eu/flight-news-this-is-how-much-money-you-could-save-by-flying-on-friday-13th/#respond Fri, 13 Apr 2018 06:41:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/flight-news-this-is-how-much-money-you-could-save-by-flying-on-friday-13th/

Friday 13th is considered an unlucky day for some and it is believed that 49 million Brits fear the date, believing something bad may happen to them.

In fact, a study by Travelodge revealed that 74 per cent of adults reported to have suffered from back luck on a previous Friday 13th.

However, British travellers willing to look past superstition will find there are some big savings to be made on last-minute flights.

In fact, this is the cheapest date to fly in the UK, with many avoiding it in fear for something going wrong.

According to data from travel search engine, Kayak.co.uk, flights on Friday 13th are down by an average of eight per cent to some of Britons’ top destinations – especially when compared with any other Friday in April 2018.

For last-minute deals, a trip to the Northern Irish destination of Belfast is down by a staggering 41 per cent – going from £107 on any given Friday in April to just £63 for a return economy seat.

This weekend, flights to Palma de Mallorca are only £81, compared with £129 the following Friday.

Meanwhile, a last-minute getaway to Faro is down by 32 per cent, with flights costing £105 this coming Friday 13th.

That’s a £51 saving compared with any other week in April 2018.

Those who fancy a last-minute holiday to Naples, one of Italy’s oldest and artistic city’s, could save a whopping 28 per cent by flying this weekend – to only £106 for a return economy fare.

Otherwise be prepared to pay £147 return fare every other Friday this month.

Therefore, it’s time to put this very old superstition to bed and save some money by flying on Friday 13th.

Belfast – prices down by 41 per cent

Palma de Mallorca – prices down by 37 per cent

Faro – prices down by 32 per cent

You Can Stay Overnight At the ‘Friday the 13th’ Camp Crystal Lake Shooting Location https://briefnews.eu/you-can-stay-overnight-at-the-friday-the-13th-camp-crystal-lake-shooting-location/ https://briefnews.eu/you-can-stay-overnight-at-the-friday-the-13th-camp-crystal-lake-shooting-location/#respond Fri, 23 Feb 2018 00:03:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/you-can-stay-overnight-at-the-friday-the-13th-camp-crystal-lake-shooting-location/ Camp Crystal Lake Overnight

Warmer weather is almost upon us, and if you’re looking for a nice getaway spot, here’s a recommendation: Camp Crystal Lake. Yes, you can now spend the night at the camp location used to film the original Friday the 13th…if you dare.

If you’ve ever wanted to spend the night at a camp ground where horny teens were hacked to death, you’re in luck. Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco, a Boy Scouts camp located in sunny Hardwick, New Jersey, is opening its gates this year to let guests spend the night. The camp was used as the location for the first Friday the 13th film, where it doubled for Camp Crystal Lake. At this (fictional) camp, reckless counselors let young Jason Voorhees drown in the lake. The event would set off a seemingly endless number of horror movie sequels in which Jason’s mother, and then later the rotting, unstoppable zombie of Jason himself, set out for bloody revenge. Heads were smashed, pot was smoked, and Crispin Glover danced his ass off.

None of that will happen during your stay at the camp (maybe), but at the very least, this is a neat opportunity for fans of the franchise. Adrienne King, who played Final Girl Alice in the first film (and had a brief cameo in the second) will also be on hand. Ticket prices vary, but certain tickets include dinner and breakfast. No word on which ticket will bring about your quick, bloody demise, though. Who knows, you might get lucky.

Full details about the stay are below. Good luck, campers.

VR runner ‘Sprint Vector’ launches on February 13th https://briefnews.eu/vr-runner-sprint-vector-launches-on-february-13th/ https://briefnews.eu/vr-runner-sprint-vector-launches-on-february-13th/#respond Tue, 30 Jan 2018 22:14:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/vr-runner-sprint-vector-launches-on-february-13th/

Ever wanted to run in virtual reality without smacking into a real wall? You’ll have a chance shortly. Survios has revealed that its VR foot racing game Sprint Vector launches February 13th for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR. The sci-fi runner stands out with a unique control scheme where you pump your arms to run, and your head to turn. In theory, you can get a feel for what it’s like to race at breakneck speed without having to actually, well, sprint.

The title includes both single-player and multiplayer play across 12 tracks, complete with Wipeout-style power-ups and eight players you can customize with skins (including a free Olympics-themed pack). Some of the gameplay will seem familiar, then. VR is definitely the hook — it just happens to be one helluva hook that fundamentally changes the experience.

Blumhouse Would Like to Reboot ‘Friday the 13th’ https://briefnews.eu/blumhouse-would-like-to-reboot-friday-the-13th/ https://briefnews.eu/blumhouse-would-like-to-reboot-friday-the-13th/#respond Sat, 13 Jan 2018 12:13:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/blumhouse-would-like-to-reboot-friday-the-13th/ Friday the 13th reboot

After they get done rebooting Halloween, Blumhouse would like to take a crack at a Friday the 13th reboot. Jason Blum, president of the wildly successful horror (and Whiplash) distributor, says that the next franchise he’d like to set his sights on is the one that features hockey-masked slasher Jason Voorhees.

Blumhouse is currently in the process of rebooting the Halloween franchise, with David Gordon Green directing and co-writing with Danny McBride. It’s an exciting new step in the Halloween series, and Blumhouse doesn’t seem content to just stop at one classic franchise reboot. Speaking with CinePOP (via MovieWeb), Blumhouse head honcho Jason Blum said that he’d be down to relaunch the Friday the 13th series:

“Besides Halloween? You know, I really wanted to do Friday the 13th. I would love to do that movie. Maybe someday we’ll get do to that one.”

Launched in 1980, the Friday the 13th franchise spawned 12 films (including a reboot). In case you don’t know, the franchise focuses on Jason Voorhees, an undead slasher who dons a hockey masks and slices and dices his way through horny teens. The series took Jason from the camp grounds of Camp Crystal Lake, to the mean streets of Manhattan, to space itself. There’s also a very popular video game based on the movies that I hear all the cool kids play.

The series was rebooted by Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes in 2009, and while that film was a box office success, it failed to spawn sequels like the original franchise. Since then, there have been numerous plans to relaunch the series, none of them successful. 2009 reboot producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form wanted to make another film in the series, and Warner Bros. said they would release a film on August 13, 2010. That, obviously, never came to pass. Fuller eventually revealed that potential film was completely dead.

Beyond that, there were other plans, including a potential “found footage” sequel that was eventually killed due to fan outrage. Eventually, the rights to the series passed from Warner Bros. to Paramount, and things were ramping up for a brand new film to begin production in 2017 with director Breck Eisner. But with less than six weeks go to before the start of principal photography, Paramount pulled the plug on the film, citing the box office failure of Rings as the reason. Now the future of the series is anyone’s guess.

As of now, there’s nothing official. This is a pipe-dream; something Jason Blum says he would like to happen. But if Blumhouse can work out some sort of deal with Paramount to produce a Friday the 13th reboot, Blum’s wish may just come true. The attention Blumhouse has been giving to the Halloween reboot, going so far as to recruit original Halloween director John Carpenter and original star Jamie Lee Curtis, indicates they’re committed to getting that film right. If they could apply the same sort of care to Friday the 13th, fans might be in for a treat.

How Disney California Adventure and Japanese Theme Parks Could Inform a 13th Disney Park https://briefnews.eu/how-disney-california-adventure-and-japanese-theme-parks-could-inform-a-13th-disney-park/ https://briefnews.eu/how-disney-california-adventure-and-japanese-theme-parks-could-inform-a-13th-disney-park/#respond Tue, 12 Dec 2017 11:18:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-disney-california-adventure-and-japanese-theme-parks-could-inform-a-13th-disney-park/ 13th Disney theme park

Disney currently operates 12 theme park properties around the world, not counting water parks. In the early days of Disney California Adventure, before Cars Land and other elements of the 2012 redesign went into effect, the eighth of those 12 parks took flak for offering a tacky recreation of things people would associate with California…in the middle of the real California. Take a Superstar Limo ride! Do a wine-tasting! Visit a faux national park!

At a preview of the park before its opening, one Disney Imagineer famously said, “I liked it better as a parking lot.”

Perhaps the park would have been better received if it had opened in Tokyo with a Japanese theme instead. As it so happens, something like that might now be in the works, as reports have surfaced of an all-new Japanese-themed park development being planned at Tokyo Disney Resort. Whether it winds up being a whole separate park, as is rumored because of the budget, or just a massive 2.68-billion-dollar expansion on Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, the notion of such a development teases fans of immersive environments with some interesting possibilities. Given the cross-pollination that occurs between Disney parks across the world, this is a case where properties like Epcot as well as Japan’s existing theme parks allow us to make some informed speculation about what a “Disney Japan Adventure” type park or land could look like.

Mediterranean_Harbor_046

Within Japan already, there is a precedent for the theme park industry painstakingly recreating other times and places with an attention to detail that goes beyond what you see in other countries. Tokyo DisneySea, which is broken up into ports instead of the usual “lands,” has been consistently lauded for the elegance of its theming. Some of its biggest landmarks include an island volcano that actively erupts, a life-size ocean liner, and a step pyramid beside a lost river in the jungle.

Part of the problem with Disney California Adventure, originally, was that it offered sort of a cheap imitation of contemporary life in California. Why ride some goofy roller coaster simulating the way Mulholland Drive winds through the Hollywood Hills above L.A., when you could get in your car and go driving on the real Mulholland Drive (or better yet, watch the David Lynch film?) In any case, the ride we’re alluding to here really has been re-themed as a Goofy roller coaster now.

Here’s an excerpt from California Adventure’s Wikipedia entry describing how the 2012 redesign altered the park:

Each district was reimagined to transform the park from a spoof of modern California culture to a romanticized, idealized version of the state, exploring specific time periods and historic settings.

Japan is a country that loves to celebrate its own rich history and culture, and it is also one that seems to have embraced the virtues of simulating environments more: making the travels experienceable right at home, as it were. In Nagasaki, where Martin Scorsese toured settings for his 2016 film Silence, it has done this to the degree that there is even a whole theme park called Huis Ten Bosch that seeks to provide a walkable, life-size model of Amsterdam and the Netherlands.

Huis-Ten-Bosch-Aerial-2-by-Joshua-Meyer
Huis-Ten-Bosch-Aerial-3-by-Joshua-Meyer
Huis-Ten-Bosch-Waterway-3x4-by-Joshua-Meyer

Since time travel is currently impossible (that we know of), it is easy to imagine the country bringing some of that simulation magic to “a romanticized, idealized version” of its own history, recreating bygone eras the way it already does at the hot springs theme park Oedo-Onsen Monogatari, not far from Tokyo Disney Resort. In Kyoto, where Last Jedi director Rian Johnson helped unveil a Star-Wars-themed Japanese folding screen this September, there is already a theme park called Toei Kyoto Studio Park, which doubles as an eigamura (movie village) whose streets serve as the filming backdrop for Japanese period dramas. Outside rare venues like this, however, going to Japan looking for geishas, samurais, or ninjas is a little like going to America looking for cowboys from the Old West.

One possible way for a Japan-themed Disney development to cater to foreigners, or even just Japanese people looking for a novelty experience, would be to offer a Disney village modeled after Old Japan. Think: the Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament in Orlando, Florida, or something along those lines, but with a distinctly Japanese twist. Mickey comes out to greet you in his samurai robe. Minnie gets her own teahouse greeting corner where she holds a shamisen, the three-stringed musical instrument plucked by geishas.

At seasonal events like Tokyo Disneyland’s Tanabata Days, you can already see both Cast Members and guests walking around in summer kimonos as they celebrate the Star Festival, a Japanese holiday, by writing wishes on Mickey-eared slips of paper and then hanging them under bamboo. Mickey and Minnie also wear their own Japanese costumes.

Grafting Disney onto real Japanese holidays like this — giving an expanded focus to some of the other ones on the calendar like Setsubun (sort of the Japanese Groundhog Day, where bean-throwing and other traditions are used to drive out bad spirits and usher in the spring season) — might be a way to introduce Japanese culture to foreigners while also keeping some of the older practices from falling out of favor at home with a disinterested younger generation weaned on social media. This is a very real concern for a lot of older Japanese people: the fear that Japan is losing its culture. How to preserve that culture and keep it from losing vitality in the modern world?

In a way, samurai and geisha mice almost seem too obvious, not imaginative enough. Even though Japan has been posting some record tourism numbers in the lead-up to the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, its live-in population is made up of 98.5% ethnically Japanese. Foreigners are going to make up a comparatively slim share of the market.

Within the next half-century, the population is also projected to shrink by a third. People are aging, fewer children are being born, and so the reality of the situation is that there will be more adults in the generation being served by this park development.

With that in mind, the existing model of Epcot’s World Showcase might contain some clues for what to expect — and not just because it has its own dedicated Japan Pavilion with a five-story pagoda and a torii gate modeled after the one at Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima.

Epcot-Torii-Gate-Pagoda-3x4-by-Joshua-Meyer
Epcot-Japan-Pavilion-3x4-by-Joshua-Meyer

At Tokyo Dome, the baseball stadium where artists like the Rolling Stones, U2, and Madonna have performed concerts over the years, there is also an annual event called Furusato Matsuri (Hometown Festival). This event sees vendors come from all around Japan to set up food stalls offering regional cuisine in a setting where unique aspects of local festivals like parade floats are also shared. This year, for instance, you could see Awa dancers and a striking glow-in-the-dark Nebuta float from the city of Aomori, among other things.

Disney often clones the same concepts across its various theme parks. When you look at what they already have there in Epcot’s World Showcase, and cross-reference that with an event like the Hometown Festival at Tokyo Dome, it is very easy to imagine Tokyo holding a similar “National Showcase,” whereby it could demonstrate different regional traditions. Food would be a big draw, as foodie culture is already deeply ingrained in Japanese society. Japanese TV is littered with enough cooking and travel food shows to make it seem like one big Food Network at times. Instead of an “International Food & Wine Festival” like at Epcot, then, what you might see at Disney Japan Adventure is a “National Food Festival.”

If that seems to lack a certain thrill, there has already been a coordinated initiative the last few years to promote Star Wars in Japan by tying the media franchise to existing local traditions in various cities. Most recently, a Japanese summer festival with a history dating back hundreds of years allowed a 42-foot Star Wars float to be the first such float with a foreign theme involved in the event.

Imagine seeing Japanized versions of Star Wars characters: ronin bounty hunters like Boba Fett, Stormtroopers in feudal armor wandering around, a Luke Skywalker with kabuki eyes projected large, in keeping with the Japanese roots of the franchise. This kind of imagery has already been popping up in some of Japan’s Star Wars movie promotions since 2015. Remember that glow-in-the-dark parade float we mentioned before? Here’s one from this year juxtaposed with a Jedi version.

Nebuta-Comparison-9x26-by-Joshua-Meyer

It may seem like a strange way to preserve Japanese culture by mixing it with American pop culture, but now suddenly Aomori, the city that holds that festival every year, has revitalized some of its heritage by gaining more visibility on the world stage, while at the same time appealing to a younger generation of fans at home. In the same way, while it might chafe purists and protectors of tradition, average citizens might not have as many objections to seeing a theme park built around the concept of “Disney Japan Adventure.”
