The deadliest Israeli-Palestinian clashes since the 2014 Gaza War have resulted in three more casualties: Hani Ramzi Afaneh and Mohammad Khalil Shaqoura, both 21, as well as 12-year-old Shadi Abul-Al, WAFA news agency reported.
At least 248 people have been injured or suffered from tear gas exposure, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Fifteen people have been hit by live bullets.
Israeli Defense Forces have referred to the protesters as “rioters,” insisting its response was proportionate and in line with its rules of engagement. The Israeli army spokesman said that the protesters pelted Israeli forces with rocks, burn tires and threw two grenades and bombs, inflicting an injury to one Israeli soldier. The soldier had suffered a shrapnel wound and received medical attention on the spot.
The IDF also claimed that nine Palestinians attempted to break through the fence on the Israel-Gaza border but were stopped by the Israeli security forces. In retaliation, the IDF targeted two Hamas positions inside Gaza with tanks and aircraft.
Tensions have been running high on the border for six months now, since the first “Great March of Return” protest on March 30 drew some 30,000 Palestinians. So far, 178 Palestinians have been killed and over 19,000 injured in the weekly protests.
The situation has been exacerbated by the US recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and the grand opening of the embassy there in May, which has drawn anger from Palestinians, the entire Arab world, and even some US allies in Europe.
The Trump administration’s recent decision to defund the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA) and shut down the Palestine Liberation Organization offices in Washington have also fueled Palestinian anger.

A string of MPs and doctors are calling for urgent reform after Billy Caldwell suffered his first seizure in 300 days after he ran out of cannabis-oil supplies.
His “anti-epileptic medicine” was confiscated from his mother, Charlotte, when she tried to bring it through Heathrow Airport on her return from Canada.
There has been widespread outrage over what has been described as ‘the signing of Billy’s death warrant’ by the UK authorities. An all-parliamentary group has now come together to renew a previous pledge to reform policies.
Crispin Blunt, a former prisons minister and co-chair of the all-parliamentary group on drug policy reform, said: “Billy Caldwell is one child out of many hundreds, as well as many thousands of adults, who would benefit from cannabis-derived medicines in the UK.
“We already happily accept the medicinal value of other plants such as poppies which can be used to create effective opioid painkillers and morphine as well as heroin. 75 percent of the British public support medical cannabis, and the UK is ironically the world’s largest producer and exporter of legal cannabis.
“It is inconceivable that the Home Office continues to deny the medicines that [Billy] and countless other patients so desperately need yet can access in many other countries including Canada, the United States and several EU states,” Blunt told The Guardian.
“A simple statutory instrument in parliament will allow families out of the current absurd position of having to either expatriate themselves, or obtain cannabis illegally and face a prison sentence for caring for their own.”
The government continues to maintain that cannabis has no medical benefit, despite mounting evidence to the contrary.
Tory MP Dan Poulter, who is also a mental health doctor, outlined the paradox of being able to prescribe much stronger drugs than cannabis.
“When there is growing evidence of the benefits of prescribing medicinal cannabis, then it seems extraordinary that we can’t do so,” he said. “The legitimate medical needs of patients are being seen through the prism of drugs legislation from 1971. That can’t be right, sensible or humane.”
Billy became the first in the UK to be prescribed medical cannabis after he was found to benefit from it in Canada. But his GP recently said he had to stop prescribing the class-B drug at the orders of the Home Office.
Before starting his cannabis-oil treatment, Billy could have up to 100 seizures a day. “Billy had a seizure this morning,” Caldwell told The Guardian. “It’s proven to me that, on the first day since his anti-epileptic medication was confiscated, it’s having a detrimental effect on him. The consequences inevitably for Billy will not be good. He’s heading towards a crisis situation.”
A Home Office spokesperson said: “The Home Office is sympathetic to the difficult and rare situation that Billy and his family are faced with. Whilst we recognize that people with debilitating illnesses are looking to alleviate their symptoms, Border Force has a duty to stop banned substances from entering the UK.”

Austrian prosecutors have filed charges against Lorenz K., the teenage son of Albanian immigrants who they say mentored and guided a 12-year old German-Iraqi boy through two failed Islamist attacks in late 2016.
The 55-page indictment delivered by the Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office and cited by Austrian media, alleges that Lorenz, now 18, pledged allegiance to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in the summer of 2016, and began contacting even younger boys in a bid to recruit them.
The 12-year-old resident of the town Ludwigshafen in Rhineland, Germany, with whom the 18-year-old had formed a bond, left a bag filled with unlit fireworks and nails near at a Christmas market on 26 November 2016, and outside the city hall a week later on December 3, when he was caught.
Investigators say the explosives would not have detonated on its own, but said Lorenz talked the the perpetrator through every step of the planned attack – from helping him prepare and successfully test the bomb; encouraging him to pick a market instead of a church; as well as writing to him on Whatsapp: “Put on a thick jacket… Then go behind a hut and light and run,” minutes before the scheduled explosion.
Lorenz K.’s lawyer says his client rejects the charges of terrorism, which could land him with 15 years behind bars. “We will deny everything except IS membership,” said Wolfgang Blaschitz, according to Austrian news website OE24. “Lorenz is certainly not public enemy number one”.
Lorenz was jailed for aggravated robbery for 29 months in 2015, but found Islam while behind bars, and began to attend mosque while on day release. His preacher, Ebu Tejma, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for extremist recruiting in 2016.
Lorenz K.’s accomplice, born in 2004, was too young to face justice according to German law, and was placed under supervision by the authorities.

A pro-Trump political group has arranged for a 12-year old girl to interview Roy Moore, the Republican running for the vacant US Senate seat in Alabama, and who is fighting accusations of sexually assaulting minors decades ago.
Millie March, the girl who interviewed Moore, gained fame during the 2016 presidential campaign for her support of Trump. America First Project, the super PAC which arranged the interview, was founded by ex-Breitbart News staffer Patrick Howley. Breitbart has been openly supportive of Moore’s candidacy, both in the primaries and in the run-up to the December 12 vote.
The video opens with the Jennifer Lawrence from the America First Project introducing Millie over videos of previous interviews. “We decided we were going to bring Millie to Alabama, after everything that’s happened in this Alabama Senate race up until this point we thought it was important,” Lawrence says. Millie was brought to Alabama “to show there is a wide range of people who support Roy Moore,“ Lawrence added.
Millie discussed abortion and building a wall along the US-Mexico border with Moore’s campaign manager, Rich Hobson.
“What’s the age range or age group or what kind of people are supporting Judge Moore right now” Millie asks. “I wish I could say it’s the eleven and twelve-years-olds right now,” Hobson replied.
Speaking to Moore at the Alabama GOP headquarters, Millie asked if he will support Trump’s plan to build a wall along the southern border, and what he thought were the most important issues to voters of Alabama. Religious liberty, healthcare, and taxes, Moore replied. As for the wall, he would support using the military to reinforce the Border Patrol.
Moore is no stranger to controversy. In 2006, he wrote that Muslims should not be allowed to serve in Congress, propagated the conspiracy theory that Barack Obama was not born in the US, and said“homosexual conduct” should be illegal.
Last month, a Washington Post report referenced claims by four women who accused the former Alabama Supreme Court Judge of sexual assault. All of the women said they were between the ages of 14 and 18 when Moore allegedly sexually assaulted them. Moore has denied the allegations, which he called “the very definition of fake news.”
Despite the charges, Moore has earned Trump’s endorsement. “Get out and vote for Roy Moore,” Trump said during a speech in Pensacola, Florida last week. “We can’t afford to have a liberal Democrat who is completely controlled by Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. We can’t do it.”
The special election for the vacant Alabama Senate seat is scheduled for Tuesday.

Police in India have charged a 26-year-old schoolteacher with ‘abetment of suicide’ after a 12-year-old girl took her own life Monday as a result of consistent harassment which culminated in ‘period-shaming’ in front of her classmates.
“After she experienced menstruation in the classroom, the teacher sent her out with a stern rebuke. The school management did not even provide a sanitary napkin citing non-availability of an ayah (nanny) and just gave her a piece of cloth to use,” a source within the District Child Protection Unit said, confirming the period-shaming The New Indian Express.
“We have also learned that the victim was depressed as one of her classmates said she had shared her intention of committing suicide,” the source added.
The 12-year-old girl jumped from a rooftop Sunday after ongoing problems with her teacher at school.
“Her friends pointed out that she had stained her uniform and so she asked her class teacher Ilakiya for help,” the girl’s mother told The News Minute.
“The teacher did not even take into account that there were boys in the class. She asked my daughter to lift [the] top of her salwar up and then gave her duster cloth to use as a pad,” she said outraged.
The girl left a note but did not mention her teacher by name, police said.
Palayamkottai police said the suicide was the result of the overzealous scolding of the young girl due to poor academic performance.
“Among the 52 students from Class VII, we spoke to all 11 girl students to know more about the alleged menstruation incident,” investigating officer Inspector Periyasamy of Palayamkottai told The New Indian Express.
“[None] of them mentioned it. As the victim claimed her teacher was torturing her, we have altered the case from suicide to abetment of suicide.”
Menstruation is still considered taboo in parts of Southeast Asia, including India.

On Wednesday, the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals ruled in favor of a girl seeking a waiver from a state law that requires minors to obtain “the written consent of either parent or the legal guardian” before receiving an abortion.
The 12-year-old girl, only referred to as “anonymous” or “minor” in the opinion, was impregnated by an adult relative while she was living with her mother, stepfather, four siblings, and an uncle.
The relative who raped her was charged with statutory rape and the girl was removed from her home for the fifth time. She was placed in the custody of the Department of Human Resources (DHR) after the police were notified that her mother reportedly became physically abusive toward her upon learning of her daughter’s pregnancy.
The girl told her DHS caseworker that she wanted to end the pregnancy, and filed a petition with the juvenile court for a waiver. The court granted her a waiver on June 27, but a district attorney filed a notice of appeal the same day.
In 2014, Alabama lawmakers amended portions of the law to allow “the district attorney’s office, and any guardian ad litem, or the parent, parents, or legal guardian of the minor” the right to appeal the court’s decision.
The district attorney challenged the court’s decision, arguing that the girl was “too immature to make an informed decision and that there is no evidence that the abortion would be in the minor’s best interest.”
The district attorney added that the girl was too immature to understand the complications that could arise from having an abortion, and that she did not “understand that an abortion will end the life of the fetus.”
The court said that the girl went to two hospitals, saw an ultrasound, and was informed of her options of abortion or adoption, but still said that she wanted to end the pregnancy through abortion.
The appeals court cited the juvenile court, which found that the girl understood “the medical procedure of abortion and its consequences as much as any twelve-year-old can.”
The court also cited the DHS, which reported that the girl, who just ended the fifth grade, appeared to “interact at a normal sixth-grade level, and that no interactions had caused the caseworker concern about the minor’s ability to communicate or understand information.”
At the time of the trial, the girl, who was approximately 13 weeks pregnant, testified that she was too young to have a child of her own, and said she did not want to place the baby up for adoption because she was “scared.”
The court ruled that the girl “presented probative evidence to the Court of her maturity and has demonstrated to the Court that she has the maturity and decision making capabilities typical of her age and abilities.”
The district attorney also argued that the “only circumstance” presented to the court regarding the girl’s best interest was her age, adding there was “no testimony offered to indicate that the pregnancy and/or delivery would present a health risk to the minor.”
The appeals court cited the juvenile court, which found that the abortion was in the best interest of the girl due to her age, the lack of familial support, and the fact that she became pregnant “by way of a criminal act perpetrated against her by a relative.”
The girl said that she did not want her mother to be part of the proceedings, or to have any input regarding her decision because they do not have a good relationship. The opinion stated that there were allegations that her mother was aware of the “repeated rape” and reacted violently toward the girl when she learned about the pregnancy.
The opinion also stated that the whereabouts of the girl’s father is not known, but they believe he was living in a Central American country.
“In this case, the minor is in the custody of DHR based on reports of physical abuse at the hands of her mother,” the opinion read, adding, “the minor does not know her biological father, this is the fifth time that the minor has been removed from her mother’s custody, the minor has no familial support, and the pregnancy was a result of statutory rape by an adult relative of the minor that occurred while the minor was in her mother’s custody. The minor consistently stated that she wanted an abortion, that she was too young to care for a child, that she was scared, and that she did not want to have a child.”

A 12-year-old boy does not have to undergo chemotherapy against his will, a court in North Holland ruled. A judge rejected his father’s request to enforce the treatment on the boy and increase his chances of survival.
In November last year, the boy, identified only as David, was diagnosed with a brain tumor which was successfully removed. Having undergone six weeks of radiation treatment, David, who was declared ‘clear’, refused follow-up chemotherapy. Citing side-effects that would deteriorate the quality of his life, David voiced his dissent to chemo and opted for alternative medicine.
The boy’s parents are divorced so he reportedly had to be temporarily placed in care of social workers as his mother, contrary to the father, supported David’s choices.
The boy had been examined twice by psychologists since then, who eventually found he had a “strong will to live” and realized the consequences of halting the treatment. For the first time in December last year, David was found incapable to decide on his treatment at that time. Later assessments in March, though, showed the boy was “100 percent mentally competent”.
In case of keeping up with chemotherapy David would have a 75-80 percent chance of survival, otherwise it would be 50/50, according to the media citing the court’s documents.
However, taking David’s “constitutional right to physical integrity” into account, the court said it “found there was no reason not to respect David’s wishes”.
“David can reasonably appreciate what he believes is in his best interests, and understands the consequences of his actions, including the negative ones,” the court went on, as quoted by AFP.
“He has the right to self-determination, even if that is hard for the parents,” the court added.
Netherlands is also among few countries where child euthanasia is legal, allowing children, aged at least 12 years old, to seek an end to extreme suffering under parents’ consent.

A 12-year-old boy was caught trying to drive 4,000km (2,500 miles) across Australia on Saturday, when police pulled him over for a damaged bumper in the remote mining city of Broken Hill.
“Officers from Broken Hill Highway Patrol stopped a motor vehicle on the Barrier Highway due to defects which made the vehicle hazardous,” a police spokesperson is reported as saying.
“Checks revealed the driver to be a 12-year-old boy travelling from Kendall NSW on his way to Perth. He’d taken the family car,” Detective Inspector Kim Fehon told 9 News.
“His parents reported him missing immediately after he left home, so they were looking for him,” Fehon was quoted as saying.
According to police, the car had suffered some damage. “So it appears [the boy]did have an accident while driving,” Fehon said.
The boy was arrested 1,300km from Kendall on the Australian east coast where he began his journey. It is unclear how the boy was able to drive so far without being caught, or what inspired him to make the lonely journey. The location where he was stopped is best known for the filming of Hollywood blockbuster ‘Mad Max’.
Police believe he intended to complete the journey alone. He has since been released to his parents.
“Not only was the child’s life at risk but all the people he went past and came in contact with,” Fehon said.
“He was lucky he had an escape [from his accident],” Fehan said. “But so did all the motorists on the way from Kendall to Cobar. They all had a lucky day as well.”
