Lost luggage can be one of the worst things to happen before or after a holiday, when everything that is needed gets waylaid.
Accidental loss is the biggest problem for Britons which equates to over half of baggage claim excuses.
New research by Direct Line Travel Insurance found that in 2017 over £12 million of luggage was lost for Britons alone.
This adds up to £33,390 per day, an increase of 4 per cent from 2016.
But what can British travellers do to avoid falling into the trap?
Direct Line advises to always have necessities in hand luggage such as spare clothes and medication as well as valuables; the latter of which aren’t protected in the hold.
They also advise splitting hold luggage across a few bags so there are enough items to last until the luggage is returned.
This includes money and bank cards to ensure travellers are not left out of pocket and without any means of payment.
Otherwise, it is always worth checking travel insurance to see if it is covered as many may exclude this from their protection/
With a fifth of travellers (20 per cent) attempting to find their luggage by spending hours on the phone, it can eat into holiday time that can be spent doing something else.
Others who had been affected by lost luggage admitted to having to wear the same clothes for more than a day (17 per cent), having to buy new clothes (15 per cent) or having to replace the entire contents of their suitcase (7 per cent).
Many found that long-term it caused problems such as lost important travel documents such as hotel bookings or car insurance making the holiday difficult (6 per cent) or not being able to replace the items due to sentimental value.
Tom Bishop, head of travel insurance at Direct Line, commented: “With thousands of holidaymakers facing luggage issues each year, this analysis shows just how important it is for travellers to make sure they pack their valuables and essentials in their hand luggage.
“So, in the event their hold bags are delayed, damaged, lost or stolen they’re not left with just the clothes on their back.
“While having comprehensive travel insurance in place may not prevent travellers losing their luggage in the first place, it can ensure that if the worst happens they can replace their belongings without being left out of pocket.”
With luggage claims being the third most common travel insurance claim after holiday cancellations or medical expenses, it can pay to be protected.
Yet a third of Britons are denied travel insurance due to their medical conditions according to a study by the Co-op.
Cancer patients, diabetic patients and people with high or low blood pressure stated they struggled to get protected.
Age also comes into account; those over 65 years old said they found it hard.
Colin Butler, Head of Travel Insurance at the Co-op commented: “It’s really quite worrying to think that people who find it difficult to get suitable travel insurance product are resorting to not declaring important details about their medical conditions or are ignoring travel insurance completely.”
Two questions inevitably crop up as a movie based on a true story unfolds. First, how much of what’s happening on screen is actually what happened in real life? Second, how much of what happened in real life can translate into something dramatically interesting? The new war film 12 Strong begins with a compelling enough hook, following a dozen U.S. soldiers who were the first men to attempt to take down the Taliban in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. Unfortunately, while the real events indeed seem fascinating, they don’t make for a compelling film.
Chris Hemsworth plays Mitch Nelson, a soldier who’d been transferred to desk duty in a Kentucky Army base in the days just before 9/11. Immediately after the attack, he convinces his superior (Rob Riggle) to let him get back in the field with his team, although he’s never led them into active combat before. His fellow soldiers (played by, among many others, Michael Shannon, Michael Pena, and Trevante Rhodes) believe in him unwaveringly, of course. However, as 12 Strong follows the team into the mountains of Afghanistan, Mitch is even able to bond with an Afghani general leading the local assault against the Taliban, though he and his fellow Americans struggle with traversing those mountains on horseback.
Horse riding aside, much of 12 Strong feels awfully familiar. There are the Americans’ gradual but never-terribly-emphatic attempts to ingratiate themselves with the locals, like when Rhodes’ character slowly befriends the young Afghani boy who tails him. There’s a handful of brief moments meant to highlight the camaraderie between the dozen Americans, just as there are brief and wistful moments where they wonder if leaving behind their families to fight this war was the right thing to do. The good news is that Hemsworth, Pena, Shannon, and Rhodes are naturally charismatic enough to sell this overly familiar material (although casting a non-American actor to lead a movie so squarely about American soldiers seems…a bit weird). The bad news is that the script, by Ted Tally and Peter Craig, never tries to deliver anything but overly familiar material. What we know of these men, within the context of the film, is minimal at best; they are all heroic, but in a bland and generic sense in spite of the capable actors portraying them.
Director Nicolai Fuglsig, making his feature debut, does not slip into a choppy and incomprehensible style of action filmmaking, which is a welcome surprise. Fuglsig stages the various firefights between the American/Afghani and Taliban forces capably; also, a lot of the action seems to be practical, eschewing obvious or cartoonish green-screen or CGI. However, many of those firefights extend a minute or two more than they need to, expanding the film’s length to more than 2 hours. In spite of the film focusing on 12 American soldiers (as well as their Uzbek comrade), 12 Strong is much more invested in the action than the people within those scenes.
This leads to another potentially unsolvable problem, which is that the Taliban is represented as a nearly faceless villain within the context of the film. On one hand, this makes some level of sense: 12 Strong takes place literally weeks after 9/11 from the perspective of Americans with barely any awareness of Afghanistan, its history and its people. On the other, it means that any time spent with the Taliban feels lazy and stereotypical, if not outright exploitative. The one scene where we watch a Taliban leader execute a defenseless woman for teaching her children basic math and reading is exceptionally gross and unnecessary. Knowing that the Taliban was responsible for 9/11 is enough reason, within the context of this film, to villainize them. Watching them execute innocent women is wildly unnecessary. At one point, Pena’s character flinches while being presented with past footage of Taliban members stoning a woman, which is more than enough historical grounding to clarify how ruthless such terrorist groups are. Seeing as the Americans never come to the aid of the specific family whose matriarch is murdered, you could literally cut the vicious scene out of the film without changing anything but the runtime.
12 Strong skates on the surface from beginning to end. We get hints of the soldiers feeling slightly regretful that they leave their wives and children behind, just as there are hints that the wives and children aren’t able to hide their heartbreak in spite of knowing what they signed up for, being married to soldiers or being fathered by them. The four big names in the film — though Rhodes gets far too little to do, unfortunately — are talented enough to not make this movie a total slog. However, they can’t elevate an uninspired script too much, nor can the competently staged action sequences. 12 Strong suggests a fascinating true story, but one that did not have the potential for feature-film power.

Warner Bros. Pictures has a new war drama called 12: Strong: The Declassified True Story of the Horse Soldiers coming to theaters in January of 2018. Formerly known as Horse Soldiers, the film follows a team of U.S. Special Forces soldiers sent into Afghanistan almost immediately after the attacks of 9/11 on a mission to track down a network of terrorists. But in order to get the job done, they must form a surprising alliance during a difficult time, one that is more relevant than ever during today’s times of political and cultural strife.
On February 7, 2017, /Film was invited to visit the set of 12 Strong during production in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We talked to stars Chris Hemsworth, Michael Pena, Trevante Rhodes and Navid Negahban about their work on the movie, which included riding horses into battle on a small mountainside while flaming debris and gunfire surrounded them. Find out what we learned about the film and the true story at the center of it in our full 12 Strong movie set visit report below.
Based on Doug Stanton’s book Horse Soldiers, inspired by the true story of the aftermath of 9/11, the war drama 12 Strong follows Chris Hemsworth as Captain Mitch Nelson and his small band of U.S. Special Forces soldiers (which include Michal Shannon, Michael Pena, and Trevante Rhodes) as they are sent into Afghanistan to hunt down the Taliban terrorists and their Al Qaeda brethren for orchestrating and executing the attack on the United States back in 2001.
Once in Afghanistan, the soldiers soon find that they won’t be able to rely on their high-tech gear or any back-up in order to complete this mission. Instead, they must team with Northern Alliance General Dostum (played by Navid Negahban) and his band of Afghani soldiers in order to fight this common enemy. Citizens of the Middle East and soldiers of the United States had to overcome their cultural divide during a time of seemingly insurmountable tension and anger in order to fight a common enemy. Outnumbered 40-to-1, the U.S. Special Forces soldiers and their new allies rode to war on horses into the city of Masar-i-Sharif in order to strike a critical blow against a group who not only left a scar on America, but have been terrorizing the people of Afghanistan for years.
After huffing and puffing up a small mountainside to the set of 12 Strong in Albuquerque, New Mexico, we find an army of soldiers on horseback, armed and ready for battle. In front of them lies a steep drop down the side of the mountain, littered with fake corpses (including partial horse dummies), destroyed tanks and debris from battle. Further down the mountain lies their target, a small city structure where the enemy is firing upon them.
While the small group of press on this set only had to climb this mountain once, the stars of the film, their trusty steeds, and the Afghani extras charged down this small mountainside for several takes. Thankfully, the impressive and breathtaking imagery of seeing the heroes from both sides charging into battle appears to be worth the exhaustion for them.
Throughout the day, the team of soldiers (including Chris Hemsworth and Michael Pena on horseback) and their new Afghani allies make it further and further down the mountain side. As they inch closer to the field of debris, the action gets even more intense. Gunfire and smoke surrounds them as a destroyed tank is set on fire in the middle of the set. Zirconium pellents are fired from paintball guns to create the sparks of bullet ricochets on set. Remember, all this is happening on a mountainside where the wind is blowing sand and dirt quite fiercely.
The level of orchestration required to pull off some of these takes was astounding. This isn’t just a normal battle scene from a contemporary war drama. There have actors and extras on real horses, charging into battle. Most times on set visits, you don’t get much of an idea for the cinematic scope of the events you’re unfolding until you get to see it in the monitors in video village, where the director oversees the footage that was just shot. But here, standing on a mountainside in Albuquerque New Mexico, you can see the movie playing in front of your very eyes.
In the years following 9/11, there have been countless movies about the aftermath of the attacks from a variety of perspectives. We’ve seen stories about soldiers sent to war, stories about those who rescued survivors in the attacks, and stories about families who lost loved ones. 12 Strong initially looks and feels like the kind of gung-ho, all-American war drama that we’ve seen become more prominent in recent years, boiling the complicated conflict down to action and blind patriotism. But while speaking to the cast, we learned that this movie has a little more bubbling beneath the surface.
Immediately after 9/11, there was an anti-Muslim, pro-patriot sentiment that couldn’t be escaped in the United States. We are currently seeing a resurgence of these sentiments. 12 Strong aims to inform Americans that this first battle we fought against the Taliban was not a victory won solely American soldiers. Instead, our forces teamed up with Afghani soldiers and citizens who were sick of the Taliban and Al Qaeda and want nothing more than to rid their country of these despicable people. It’s more relevant than ever, as ignorant people lump all people of Middle Eastern descent and Muslim beliefs into the same group as extreme terrorists.
For Chris Hemsworth, this story angle was particularly intriguing to him. The actor noted that the film differs from the various Navy SEAL movies that we’ve seen unfold during the war on terror in the Middle East:
“With Special Forces guys they embed themselves in a community over a course of months or years, and there’s a diplomatic duty and relationship-building within these communities to achieve their outcome…the bigger challenge and the talent of what these guys achieved was the relationship they formed with Dostum [played by Navid Negahban], the warlord that were fighting with, and getting him to trust them and leveraging centuries-old blood feuds between these tribes and convince them to understand we’re all fighting the same enemy.”
This alliance between Americans and Afghani people was a key part of the story Hemsworth hoped to tell, and the extras on the set had the same sentiment. Hemsworth elaborated:
“I’ve had people from Afghanistan say, ‘Thanks for helping to tell the story that says we’re not all terrorists.’ It wasn’t about America coming in and saying, ‘We’re taking over and this is how we do it.’ It was a diplomatic approach about working with the locals and spreading the word that we’re fighting a common enemy, and that the Taliban and Al-Qaeda were the ones that were attempting to take over. I really liked being able to put a spotlight on that and separate this sort of terrorism, and ideology with the rest of the country, who do not agree with that. We are under the same fear and threat to their freedom.”

Syfy has ordered the fourth and final season of 12 Monkeys, based on the Terry Gilliam film (which itself was based on the short film, La Jetée). While an earlier plan was for the series to last five seasons, it’ll wrap up a little sooner than intended. With the ending, the plan is to journey back to the beginning.
Below, learn more about the 12 Monkeys final season.
12 Monkeys returns for its third season in May, with Syfy is airing all 10 episodes over three consecutive nights, starting with the first four episodes on Friday, May 19. That means 12 Monkeys fans now have a comfy weekend of binge-watching to anticipate. The series, like Gilliam’s film, is about a time traveler (Aaron Stanford) and a virologist (Amanda Schull) working together to save the future. Their mission is to find the source of a plague that will wipe out most of humanity.
In a statement, Chris McCumber, President of Entertainment Networks at NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, explained why they’re going with an unconventional release for season three:
With its time-twisting themes and edge-of-your-seat storyline, 12 Monkeys is the perfect show to air this way. It’s grown into a world well beyond the original film, and after seeing the creative strength of Season 3, we couldn’t wait to pick it up for a fourth season.
Early on, the show veered off into a different direction from Gilliam’s film and developed its own vision, gaining quite a few passionate fans during its first two seasons. Throughout its first 20 episodes, the series scored good marks from critics and viewers, and more than a few times I’ve been told I need to watch the series, which was co-created by showrunners Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett.
We already have some idea of where the fourth and final season will go. Like La Jetée, producer Natalie Chaidez told us 12 Monkeys would circle back to where it began:
Yes, there is definitely a big plan. I think [series co-creator] Terry [Matalas] has said it publicly in interviews, I know he’s said it privately to me, that he and [co-creator] Travis [Ficket] knew the way that the series was going to end when they pitched the pilot. It will indeed circle back when the show finishes in season five hopefully, Syfy willing.
In regards to what’s next for James Cole and Dr. Cassandra Railly in season three, they’re searching for a time traveler known as the Witness. By killing this mystery man, Cole and Railly may save the world. They’ll journey through time to find him, and they’ll meet some interesting characters along the way, including Christopher Lloyd as a dangerous leader of a cult.
12 Monkeys returns for season three on May 19, 2017. The fourth an final season does not have an air date yet.
