Cash-strapped Zimbabwe has reportedly offered a $ 10 million payout to deposed President Robert Mugabe, while his wife will receive a generous pension after his death, and his children’s businesses won’t be touched by the incoming administration.

“The government will give him a $ 5 million lump sum and then the remainder to be paid out in instalments,” a source told the Zimbabwe Independent, whose report has since been confirmed by other media outlets. “Mugabe will also enjoy full medical cover as well as his full monthly salary. In the event of his death, his wife will be given half [his monthly salary].”

Mugabe, 93, currently receives a $ 150,000 annual pension, which will be partly inherited by his 52-year-old second wife Grace Mugabe, who is pejoratively known as “Gucci Grace” among some Zimbabweans. The two are expected to stay in the Blue Roof mansion in Harare, with the state still paying all travel, security and staff expenses for the couple.

The property of both of Mugabe’s children, and his wife’s son Russell from a previous marriage “will not be seized or in any way molested,” the Guardian reports. Mugabe’s extended family owns a range of dairy farms, and has notable interests in the country’s mining industry.

“I was worried about what the changes would mean for me personally, but I am now reassured that I can live on in my country,” one of Mugabe’s relatives, who did not wish to make his name public, told the publication. 

Despite opposition protests that no politician should be above the law, Mugabe and his family have also been granted immunity from any legal prosecution for his actions during his 37 years in office.

The Zimbabwe Independent stated that it was the protracted negotiations between the ailing Mugabe’s mediators, including a prominent Jesuit priest, and the military faction that has seized power that held up his resignation in the past weeks, rather than any desire on the part of the president to remain in his post.

The interim president, the 75-year-old Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was a close Mugabe ally and henchman for decades, has promised to avoid “vengeful retribution” against the toppled ruling clan, and has vowed to stage a democratic election next year.

According to IMF statistics, Zimbabwe’s GDP per capita puts it outside the world’s 150 wealthiest states, while its life expectancy of 60 years is 20 years below that of the US. It is estimated that some 13.5 percent of the population are infected with HIV.

A collection of five unique diamonds, cut in Russia from a single 179-carat crystal, has dazzled connoisseurs in New York. Priced at some $ 10 million, the set includes Russia’s most expensive and clearest stone ever produced.

“These are perfect gemstones. Russia has never seen such a quality before,” said Pavel Vinikhin, the CEO of the diamond division of the Russian mining giant Alrosa. The exhibition in Carnegie Hall was the diamonds’ final stop before they go on sale in an online auction on November 29. The New York venue winds up the roadshow that saw the gems displayed in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladivostok, Hong Kong and Israel.

“This is a real masterpiece, the Russian cut, the skill of Russian professionals to produce what others cannot do,” Vinikhin said, describing the “Dynasty” collection. “Each of these five diamonds was cut from a sole rough diamond. It was polished in Moscow, we have been working on it for a year and a half,” he said, adding that all five meet the highest standards of color and quality.

In 2015, the company unearthed the 179-carat rough at the Nyurbinskaya kimberlite pipe in the Siberian Sakha region. Named after the Romanovs dynasty, the finding was split into five polished gems, which were graded by the Gemological Institute of America. Less than 3 percent of the world’s diamonds can boast same quality and clearness, Alrosa claims.

Polishing five separate diamonds from one is “very, very rare,” according to the company’s sales director, Evgeniy Tsybukov.

“All five diamonds have become decolored, the best color, and with VVS1 clarity,” Tsybukov said. This is the third grade of clarity on a scale of 11, meaning any flaws are so miniscule, only an expert, equipped with a microscope and viewing the stone from the bottom, can detect them.

The collection’s biggest “Dynasty” piece “has no matches in Russian history in terms of overall quality characteristics. This is the most clean and expensive diamond ever cut in our country, the pinnacle of Russia diamond cutters’ craftsmanship.”

Apart from the main 51.38-carat Dynasty gem, the set flaunts a 16.67-carat round-cut Sheremetevs diamond, a 5.05-carat oval Orlovs diamond, a 1.73-carat pear-cut Vorontsovs diamond, and a 1.39-carat Yusupovs diamond. All of them bear family names of the famed nobility dynasties of the Russian Empire, who contributed to developing the nation’s jewelry industry. The starting price for the collection is set at $ 10 million, according to Alrosa president Sergey Ivanov.

Russia’s top lender Sberbank says it will issue ten million Mir charge cards as part of the country’s NSPK national payment system.

According to the bank, “public sector workers, pensioners, and other clients, who chose Mir for their personal needs,” are among the cardholders.

Last year, as part of its integration into the Mir system, Sberbank began servicing Mir cards at cash machines, retail and service points. The bank said there are approximately 1.2 million POS terminals that accept Mir cards at 800 retail and service locations, as well as 24,000 online stores throughout Russia.

Mir cards can be used to access all the services offered by the bank’s 77,000 self-service devices and at over 14,000 branches.

“Cardholders can also access Sberbank Online – both web and mobile app versions – and the Mobile Bank, Sberbank’s popular service for sending money via SMS,” said the bank.

The Mir payment system was introduced in 2015 after clients of several Russian banks (SMP Bank, InvestCapitalBank, Russia Bank and Sobinbank) were unable to use Visa and MasterCard due to US sanctions. Customers found the bank issued credit cards linked to the Visa and MasterCard systems no longer worked.

NSPK is ready to conquer the 230 million-card Russian market, and according to Central Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina, 90 percent of ATMs in Russia are ready to accept the new payment system.

The head of NSPK Vladimir Komlev said the cards could soon be used across Europe and the international acceptance of Mir shows the system’s maturity. Agreements have been signed with MasterCard, JCB, AMEX and the Union Pay payment systems, he said, adding Mir cards will soon be accepted by online payment platform Alipay, and there are plans to connect to eBay.

NSPK has also agreed to issue co-badged cards with JCB of Japan.

Among the dinner’s most famous guests were Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn, along with television commentator Mica Mosbacher and Florida lobbyist and general election fundraiser Brian Ballard.

Nevada Senator Dean Heller was also present, despite being part of a small group of Republicans who spoke out against the Senate’s effort to repeal and replace Obamacare just one day before.

The event, which is taking place 40 months ahead of the 2020 election, seems to have paid off, with Trump managing to rake in $ 10 million.

While the fundraiser may seem incredibly early for a president who was only inaugurated in January, Jancek said she doesn’t think it’s out of the ordinary.

“He’s raising money for the party,” she said. “I don’t think that’s abnormal for any president.”

However, a sizable amount will go solely to Trump’s re-election campaign, according to AP. The rest will be spread among RNC and other Republican entities.

The press was not allowed inside the event, despite an announcement the previous day stating that a pool of reporters would be allowed inside.

“It’s a political event, and they’ve chosen to keep that separate,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

While Trump and his generous supporters were inside the lavish hotel, protesters gathered outside, holding signs with slogans including “Healthcare, not tax cuts,” and shouting “Shame! Shame!”

“I knew that xenophobia, racism, and misogyny was expected but I didn’t know it would cost $ 35,000 a plate,” Michael Delvone, the Washington DC director for the Working Families advocacy group and grassroots political organization told TIME. “Twenty-two million people stand to lose their health care and these folks are in there dining on caviar and lobster.” 

Meanwhile, the fact that the event was held at Trump’s hotel has once again raised concerns about Trump’s financial interests in the companies he owns. Unlike previous presidents who divested from business holdings before taking office, Trump simply moved his business assets into a trust which he can take control of at any time.

A federal jury has ruled in favor of the estate of an Army veteran who died on the floor of a jailin Tulsa, Oklahoma. Elliott Williams broke his neck and was lying naked and paralyzed for 51 hours. The county is ordered to pay the family $ 10 million.

On Monday, the jury returned after deliberating for around 10 hours and found that Williams’ civil rights were violated by both the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office and former Sheriff Stanley Glanz, who was ordered to pay the family an additional $ 250,000 in punitive damages from his own pocket. 

Williams, an Army veteran, was arrested by Owasso police after suffering a mental breakdown. His only alleged crime was a misdemeanor for obstruction, but Williams died in custody before the formal charges could be filed.

During the first day of the trial, jurors saw the last 51 hours of William’s life captured by the jail’s surveillance cameras.

The graphic video, which was sped up to only last 10 minutes, shows Williams lying motionless on the floor while detention and medical staff walk by, ignoring his cries for help. Guards throw food into his cell and place water just out of his reach.

Medical staff allegedly attempted to revive Williams, but Dan Smolen, an attorney representing the family, called the medical staff’s CPR attempt “cosmetic resuscitation efforts,” according to the Frontier. 

“Elliott Williams had been dead for hours,” Smolen said, adding the medical staff knew there was a camera in the cell.

The Williams family accused Glanz and the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office of being deliberately indifferent to Williams’ medical needs and sued for $ 51 million in compensatory damages – $ 1 million for every hour Williams was lying in the cell where he died.

Defense attorney with the sheriff’s office, Clark Brewster, claimed that the video was cut and failed to capture times when Williams was eating, drinking and moving.

“What you just saw wasn’t even the trailer to the movie,” Brewster said, according to the Frontier. “It was snippets and cuts to make something sensational.”

While jail records indicate that Williams was eating and receiving medical attention, the video shows a very different picture.

Smolen told KRMG this was the first case he had ever heard of where “the records depict one thing happening, but the reality of what’s truly happening is caught on film over such an extended period of time.”

“We believe that this prolonged and reckless neglect, in the way that they treated Elliot Williams in the Tulsa County jail, really constitutes one of the worst civil rights violations in US history,” Smolen said.

Kevin Williams, Elliott’s older brother, cried as the verdict was read. While he said he is content with the decision, he still wishes that someone would have gone to jail over the way his brother was treated.

“Somebody should have went to jail. Somebody should have been charged. So, I’m not satisfied fully, but I’m content with the decision,” he said.
