Energy customers in the UK have been overcharged by energy companies thanks to mistakes made when billing.

It seems British customers cannot trust energy firms to get their sums rights, as nearly 1.3 million energy customers have been overcharged by a total £102 million across the UK.

This is the equivalent of more than £79 each, which entry suppliers bill for by mistake.

A quarter of energy customers have revealed their bill didn’t add up correctly.

Nearly one in three (28 per cent) of those affected said that they were charged for an amount that didn’t match the meter readings they had supplied.

Other billing blunders include suppliers getting direct debit amounts wrong (8 per cent), applying incorrect fees (7 per cent per cent), getting tariff or product details wrong (5 per cent) and muddling bills up with someone else’s (5 per cent).

To make matters worse, consumers have then faced lengthy waiting times to resolve the billing blunders. 

In each incident, it took 35 days on average to resolve the issue and get the money back, although seven per cent still haven’t had a refund.

Whats more, a large number of customer may be paying the wrong sum, after not checking their bill property.

Over a quarter of consumers (27 per cent) admitting to not reading their energy bills properly.

uSwitch.com is calling for suppliers to dramatically reduce errors, reimburse customers within a month should one occur, and issue clearer bills so customers can easily understand when they are overpaying for their energy. 

Claire Osborne, energy expert at uSwitch.com, comments: “Customers having to pay the price for suppliers’ mistakes is unacceptable. 

“Households are already feeling the pinch from recent energy price rises, and having to chase for an average of 35 days to get their money back simply adds insult to injury.”

British Gas increased the price of their energy at the beginning of this month.

British Gas price hike will see bills rising by 12.5% from September, an announcement confirmed.

The statement, which was uploaded to British Gas’ website, read: “why we are having to raise electricity prices – our first increase since November 2013”, according to the Telegraph.

What’s $ 102 million among friends? That was the question last week as Element.ai raised this hefty sum in a Series A funding. Investors included Microsoft, Nvidia, and Intel Capital, all of whom have their own AI ambitions.

Element aims to make AI easy for businesses to use by connecting them with machine learning experts. And while Element may have brought together competitors Microsoft and Intel, the rivals have been fiercely staking their own claims with a flurry of investments and acquisitions.

While these moves point to AI one day becoming ubiquitous for business tasks, Google’s release of an academic paper called “One Model to Learn Them All” shows another route for machine learning to become commonplace. The paper describes a single machine learning template — dubbed the MultiModel — that can perform multiple tasks exceptionally well. As Blair Hanley Frank writes, “Google doesn’t claim to have a master algorithm that can learn everything at once,” but implicit in this statement is the ambition of eventually discovering one or more such algorithms, the AI equivalent of a theory of general relativity.
