  • Costco said it has no plans to raise the price of its membership or its $ 1.50 hot dog combo at this time.
  • Costco exec Bob Nelson warned that membership fee hikes could come in the near future, though.
  • Costco recently raised prices on some goods, but Nelson said the company wants to be "the best value in the marketplace."

Costco has hiked prices on some items over the last year due to rising inflation, but the company has promised to keep the cost of two of the company's mainstays consistent, at least for now.

On the company's quarterly call, Costco executive Bob Nelson said the retailer has no plans to raise its membership dues at this time.

"Given the current macro environment, historically high inflation, and the burden it's having on our members and on all consumers in general, we think increasing our membership fee today ahead of our typical timing is not the right time," Nelson told investors and reporters. 

However, Nelson clarified that just because the company is not currently announcing a membership fee hike, it doesn't mean it will not announce one in the near future.   

He also attempted to put to bed rumors that Costco was raising the price of its famous food court staple. 

"I want to address some incorrect information floating around on social media and a few other media outlets claiming that we've increased the price of our hot dog and soda combination sold in our food courts. Let me just say, the price when we introduced the hot dog and soda combo in the mid-80s is $ 1.50, the price today is $ 1.50, and we have no plans to increase the price at this time," Nelson said. 

The big box retailer hasn't been able to keep prices consistent on all its goods amid rising costs. For example, the company has raised prices on other food court items like its chicken bake, muffins, and croissants due to the increased price of raw materials. 

Nelson said that the company wants to be the "best value in the marketplace," and if it can prove that to customers, "it's easier to pass on higher costs."

Martin Lewis, 45, appeared on Good Morning Britain today to share his deals of the week.

Prosecco is extremely popular at this time of year, and Martin revealed how to get a bottle for £1.50 in time for Christmas.

Martin explained: “The deal is on at Sainsbury’s for new buyers online.

“Six bottles of Prosecco Frizzante is £6 a bottle, and right now until Monday if you buy six online you get 25 per cent off. This works out at £4.50 a bottle.

“New customers can then use code SCSSEONOV18 to get £18 when you spend £60. Do your normal shopping, and this then works out at £1.50 a bottle.”

Martin explained the mechanics of the deal in detail, and said: “So it’s £27 for six bottles, so you’d need to spend £33 on groceries to reach the £60 minimum spend.

“Then with the £18 off, it’s £42. As you’ve spent £33 on normal groceries, it’s £9 for the six bottles of prosecco, or £1.50 per bottle (plus delivery if you can’t pick up in a store for free).”

Martin also advised viewers to make sure their substitutions settings are correct to avoid any surprises.

He said: “If you only want the cheapest prosecco or champagne, make sure you untick the box which says ‘allow substitutions’ when you order, as that way if it’s not in stock, you’ll just get your groceries, not a pricier bottle of prosecco.”

Martin also shared some other quick deals to snap up this week, including a trick to get a Soap & Glory – perfect as a Christmas gift – at a discount.

He said: “From Fri 8 Dec, if you go online to Boots or visit one of its stores, you can get a Soap & Glory ‘Spa of Wonder’ body care set for £30 until 11.59pm on Thursday 14 Dec.

“This gift set, which includes body butter, face wash and mascara, is normally £60, but if the products were bought individually they would cost £78.”

Martin also told viewers about an amazing and little known way to save big on their British Gas bills.

He said: “British Gas have today launched their cheapest dual fuel tariff.

“Someone on typical usage would spend £1100 a year, whereas with this one it is £995 a year.

“However you can’t get directly from British Gas, as it is only available on a comparison site.”
