New York commits $1.4 billion to renewable energy projects https://briefnews.eu/new-york-commits-1-4-billion-to-renewable-energy-projects/ https://briefnews.eu/new-york-commits-1-4-billion-to-renewable-energy-projects/#respond Tue, 13 Mar 2018 02:59:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-york-commits-1-4-billion-to-renewable-energy-projects/

On Friday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that his state would commit $ 1.4 billion to 26 renewable projects, including 22 solar farms, three wind farms, and one hydroelectric project. The outlay is a huge sum compared to what most states spend on renewable energy.

At the same time, the governor denounced the Trump administration’s plan to open nearly 90 percent of offshore federal waters to oil drilling. Cuomo asked that Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke exclude two areas off the New York coast from lease sales, citing concerns about oil spills like the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster in 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico. Cuomo noted that Florida has been able to obtain verbal approval that lease sales won’t be held in waters adjacent to the Florida coast (although some officials in the administration have contradicted that exemption).

The renewable projects will be sited throughout the state and were chosen by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) based on the proposed cost of each project, the project’s ability to create local jobs, and developer experience in building renewable projects in New York.

Kalanick to make $1.4 billion from Uber's deal with SoftBank https://briefnews.eu/kalanick-to-make-1-4-billion-from-ubers-deal-with-softbank/ https://briefnews.eu/kalanick-to-make-1-4-billion-from-ubers-deal-with-softbank/#respond Sun, 07 Jan 2018 19:06:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kalanick-to-make-1-4-billion-from-ubers-deal-with-softbank/

Uber Technologies Inc co-founder Travis Kalanick, who was ousted as chief executive in June, is selling nearly a third of his 10 percent stake in the ride-services company for about $ 1.4 billion, a person familiar with the matter said on Thursday.

Kalanick’s sale is part of a deal struck by a consortium led by SoftBank Group Corp which is taking a 17.5 percent stake in Uber, mostly by buying shares from early investors and employees. SoftBank last week secured agreements from shareholders who were willing to sell, and the deal will close early this year, Uber said.

The SoftBank deal values Uber at $ 48 billion, about a 30 percent discount from its most recent valuation of $ 68 billion. However, the investor consortium is also making a $ 1.25 billion investment of fresh funding at the older, higher valuation.

Kalanick had offered to sell half of his total shares, but because there was a limit on how much SoftBank will buy, he will sell just 29 percent, according to the source. Other investors also did not get to unload as many shares as they had hoped because of such widespread interest to sell.

The former CEO owns 10 percent of the company, which means his sale will unload 2.9 percent of Uber shares and earn him about $ 1.4 billion, the source added.

A spokesman for Kalanick declined to comment. SoftBank and Uber could not be reached immediately for comment.

The sale would make the Uber co-founder a billionaire for the first time, not just on paper. Kalanick has never before sold shares of the company he ran for almost a decade, the source said.

The SoftBank deal offers investors and employees what could be their last chance to sell shares in a company-approved transaction before Uber’s long awaited initial public offering, planned for 2019.

The transaction marks a victory for new CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, who helped broker the deal and who will benefit from a deep-pocketed investor like SoftBank.

Bloomberg first reported Kalanick’s plans to sell part of his stake. (Reporting by Liana B. Baker and Heather Somerville in San Francisco; Additional reporting by Philip George in Bengaluru; Editing by Lisa Shumaker and Muralikumar Anantharaman)

Anaplan looked like another troubled unicorn — but it’s back on track with a new $1.4 billion valuation https://briefnews.eu/anaplan-looked-like-another-troubled-unicorn-but-its-back-on-track-with-a-new-1-4-billion-valuation/ https://briefnews.eu/anaplan-looked-like-another-troubled-unicorn-but-its-back-on-track-with-a-new-1-4-billion-valuation/#respond Wed, 06 Dec 2017 00:35:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/anaplan-looked-like-another-troubled-unicorn-but-its-back-on-track-with-a-new-1-4-billion-valuation/ Frank CalderoniAnaplan

  • Anaplan has raised $ 60 million in a new funding round that pushes its valuation to $ 1.4 billion, up from $ 1.1 billion.
  • The new funding marks a keystone moment for first-time CEO Frank Calderoni, a well-known Silicon Valley executive who formerly served as chief financial officer at Cisco and Red Hat.
  • The funding also indicates the company is heading in the right direction after a prolonged transition period between CEOs last year.

Anaplan, the unicorn startup taking on SAP and Oracle with its cloud-based financial planning software, appears to have resumed its rise.

The company just closed a $ 60 million funding round from existing investors. The round brings Anaplan’s valuation to $ 1.41 billion.

That’s not only up from its previous valuation of $ 1.1 billion, it’s marks a keystone moment for company CEO Frank Calderoni. It’s also a signal that Anaplan is heading in the right direction after a prolonged transition from its last CEO to Calderoni.

Anaplan has now raised a total of $ 300 million. Its latest funding round, like previous rounds, was led by Premji Invest, the investment fund of Indian billionaire Azim Premji, founder of Indian outsourcing company WiPo. Previous investors Salesforce Ventures and Top Tier Capital also participated in the round.

Anaplan was a venture capital darling in the heady days of 2015 and early 2016. When it raised its last round, it became a unicorn, the name for startups worth $ 1 billion or more.

But when the tide shifted in early 2016 from free-flowing investment money to tighter funding rounds, lower valuations, and austerity, Anaplan’s CEO, Frederic Laluyaux, a former SAP executive, was out. His departure in April 2016 was a mutual decision with the company, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Anaplan said at the time it wanted a new CEO who would help it grow. It didn’t find what it was looking for until it hired Calderoni in January, poaching him from Red Hat.

Running Anaplan is a job Calderoni’s been well-groomed to do

Calderoni is a well-known, long-time industry executive. He spent 11 years as Cisco’s chief financial officer before serving a stint as Red Hat’s CFO and executive vice president of operations.

During his time as a CFO, Calderoni depended on the kind of financial modeling tools that Anaplan makes. Anaplan promises that its cloud software is faster and easier to use than traditional tools such as Oracle Hyperion.

Anaplan customersTwitter/Frank CalderoniCalderoni has spent this year traveling the world meeting with Anaplan employees. But his favorite moment as CEO happened a few months ago when a US customer invited him to observe a financial presentation.

The customer’s financial team had signed up for Anaplan. In seven weeks, the team had built financial planning models for seven areas of its business and was presenting them to the company’s CEO and CFO.

While Calderoni was there, members of the customer’s financial team approached him. Anaplan wasn’t just changing how they built forecasting models or saving them money, the team members told him. It was saving them time.

“The finance [organization] works long hours,” Calderoni said in an interview with Business Insider. These people were thanking him for “freeing up so much time to spend more time with their families.”

Calderoni left the meeting feeling like his startup wasn’t just delivering a product, it was changing lives. He felt happy with his choice to leave his high-profile job at Red Hat.

But Calderoni’s favorite thing about being CEO is being able to help shape Anaplan’s culture. He’s been involved in initiatives ranging from moves to attract and keep more women to choosing which charities to support. He’s also been involved in fun stuff like a organizing employee outings to San Francisco’s AT&T Park to watch Giants baseball games and hang out with the players.

Anaplan has just over 800 employees and just over 800 customers worldwide. Its revenues are in the “couple hundred millions,” Calderoni said. Meanwhile, the company is delivering the growth the board wanted him to spur; Anaplan is gaining about 70 new customers a quarter, he said.

Calderoni plans to eventually lead the company to an initial public offering. But that’s not in the works yet, he said.

Caveat Venditor: Car-Dealer Advertisement Complaints Cost Group $1.4 Million in Settlement with FTC https://briefnews.eu/caveat-venditor-car-dealer-advertisement-complaints-cost-group-1-4-million-in-settlement-with-ftc/ https://briefnews.eu/caveat-venditor-car-dealer-advertisement-complaints-cost-group-1-4-million-in-settlement-with-ftc/#respond Thu, 09 Nov 2017 04:41:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/caveat-venditor-car-dealer-advertisement-complaints-cost-group-1-4-million-in-settlement-with-ftc/ Vehicle/car loan dealership financing application

–

If car shoppers expect to pay a certain amount for a vehicle and then learn that they’re on the hook for hundreds or thousands of dollars more, it can be a confusing and aggravating experience, to say the least. And it could have been the result of misleading advertising. That’s why the Federal Trade Commission filed a complaint against a Southern California dealer. The Conant Auto Retail (CAR) Group said the allegations are without merit and has admitted no wrongdoing, but it has nevertheless agreed to settle with the FTC for $ 1.4 million.

–

The FTC said some of the company’s dozen Norm Reeves dealerships in California and Florida violated several consumer-protection laws by leading car shoppers to believe they could finance vehicles for low monthly payments, or lease vehicles with no money down, while failing to adequately disclose associated costs. The ads were run despite a 2014 consent agreement that prohibited the Norm Reeves dealers and nine other dealership groups from allegedly misrepresenting the costs of vehicles. But shortly after signing, some Norm Reeves dealers kept running ads that violated the agreement, the FTC said.

–

In its complaint, the FTC pointed to more than a dozen examples of ads run on several media platforms and in email promotions. In one ad shown below, Norm Reeves Buick GMC in Irvine, California, was running an ad on its homepage in 2015 that offered zero percent APR for 60 months. The FTC said the ad failed to disclose the amount or percentage of the down payment and the full repayment terms.

–

–

In another example, the Norm Reeves Huntington Beach (California) dealership sent out an email in 2015 that prominently featured the offer of a new Honda Civic at 1.9 percent APR for 72 months. But that deal only applied to a consumer with Tier 1+ credit, and even then the down payment would vary, the FTC said in its complaint. A consumer with Tier 1+ credit typically has a FICO score above 700.

–

“Most consumers do not have a credit score high enough to be considered Tier 1+ and therefore do not qualify for many of Defendants’ advertised offers,” the FTC said in its complaint. As with the other example, the FTC also said the ad failed to disclose certain terms.

–

For an ad run on multiple online platforms in 2015 and 2016, a Norm Reeves dealer spot said “$ 0 due at lease signing” and “Lease for $ 159/mo + tax.” The FTC said that, although there is additional language on the right side of the ad, “It is small, grey, and illegible.” The ad also didn’t say whether a security deposit was required, nor what the number of scheduled payments would be.

–

–

In addition to the monetary outlay, the settlement requires that the dealer group regularly demonstrate that it is complying with the FTC’s orders for 20 years. Although it agreed to the $ 1.4 million payment, the CAR Group has not admitted liability or fault. “The settlement payment was for an amount that was equivalent to the company’s expected defense costs and within the range of lower level FTC/dealer settlements on a per-dealership basis,” the group said in a statement.

–

“The FTC made allegations about CAR Group advertising that CAR considered to be without merit,” the company continued. “The Complaint set forth allegations about minor technical issues in a handful of ads. The CAR Group publishes many thousands of advertisements annually.”

–

–

The settlement with CAR Group is much larger than other recent, similar cases. Last year, in an $ 85,000 settlement with Southwest Kia of Dallas, the FTC alleged that cars were being advertised for $ 179 per month, but “in print too small to read without magnification” the dealer disclosed that $ 1999 would be due up front, along with other taxes and fees, and there would be an $ 8271 balloon payment at the end of a 38-month financing term. In 2014, the FTC fined Billion Auto, a chain of 20 dealerships in the upper Midwest, and Nichols Media, an advertising company, $ 360,000 in civil penalties for ads that focused on a few attractive items while hiding other factors in fine print. In all of these cases, the FTC alleged the dealers violated the Truth in Lending Act, the Consumer Leasing Act, and other related regulations.

Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet fetches record $1.4 million at auction https://briefnews.eu/mercedes-maybach-g650-landaulet-fetches-record-1-4-million-at-auction/ https://briefnews.eu/mercedes-maybach-g650-landaulet-fetches-record-1-4-million-at-auction/#respond Mon, 09 Oct 2017 19:33:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mercedes-maybach-g650-landaulet-fetches-record-1-4-million-at-auction/

Alas, G-Wagen fans: The last available 2017 Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet has sold to a private Belgian buyer, with all proceeds to benefit the children’s sports charity the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. The price tag at the Zoute Sale at Bonhams was a record €1.2 million, or about $ 1.4 million.

We previously dubbed the luxury off-roader “the ultimate safari machine” for its super-extravagant features. Its soft top can be raised or lowered electronically, as can a glass partition to the driver’s compartment (wouldn’t be a Landaulet without that, now would it, Jeeves?). What’s more, the two rear seats can be fully reclined, with leg rests extending from below, and with access to folding tables, 10-inch LCD screen and heated, cooled and illuminated (!) cup holders.

As it has the number 650 in its name, however, the Landaulet also features a twin-turbocharged V12 that generates 630 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. Bringing up the G-Wagen part of the bargain is a four-wheel-drive system with front, center, and rear differential locks, that sends power to solid portal axles front and rear, which move the differential and drive axles above the wheel centers for additional ground clearance.

The grandest G sold Friday in Brussels was reportedly straight from the factory and one of only 99 to be built. No G650 Landaulets were sold in the United States.

The Bonhams Motoring Department’s fifth annual Zoute Sale also saw the purchase of a 1968 Ferrari365 GTC Coupe for €805,000 euros ($ 945,000), the second most-valuable lot of the sale.

The cards are always stacked in favor of the casino. Casinos exist for one reason, and one reason alone: to take your money. They do it legally, even if it’s under cloudy circumstances.

Consider the case of an Alabama man who put $ 5 into an electronic bingo machine at the Wind Creek Casino in Montgomery, Alabama. The casino is on tribal land operated by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. To the gambler’s amazement, “several noises, lights, and sirens were activated” when the machine announced that Jerry Rape had hit The Big One. The bingo machine indicated a jackpot of $ 459,000, then $ 918,000, and finally settled on a “payout multiplier” of $ 1,377,000, according to the gambler’s lawsuit.

The casino took Rape’s payout ticket and made him wait for about 24 hours before saying “no dice.” He wasn’t getting the monster payout. The machine, he was told by the tribe’s casino, had “malfunctioned.” (PDF) This was in 2010.
