An increasingly sophisticated hacking group is exploiting a zero-day vulnerability in Adobe’s Flash Player that lets them take full control of infected machines, researchers said Friday.
The critical, use-after-free vulnerability, which is indexed as CVE-2018-4877, resides in the latest version of the widely installed Flash, researchers from Cisco Systems’ Talos group said in a blog post. Adobe said separately that versions earlier than current Flash 28.0.0.137 are also susceptible. The vulnerability came to light on Wednesday when South Korea’s CERT issued an advisory warning that attack code was circulating in the wild that exploited the zeroday flaw.
Talos said the exploit is being distributed through a Microsoft Excel document that has a malicious Flash object embedded into it. Once the SWF object is triggered, it installs ROKRAT, a remote administration tool Talos has been tracking since January 2017. Until now, the group behind ROKRAT—which Talos calls Group 123—has relied on social engineering or exploits of older, previously known vulnerabilities that targets hadn’t yet patched. This is the first time the group has used a zeroday exploit.

]]>Attackers have used an advanced new strain of the Mirai Internet-of-things malware to quietly amass an army of 100,000 home routers that could be used at any moment to wage Internet-paralyzing attacks, a researcher warned Monday.
Botnet operators have been regularly releasing new versions of Mirai since the source code was openly published 14 months ago. Usually, the new versions contain minor tweaks, many of which contain amateur mistakes that prevent the new releases from having the punch of the original Mirai, which played a key role in a series of distributed denial-of-service attacks that debilitated or temporarily took down Twitter, GitHub, the PlayStation Network and other key Internet services.
What sets this latest variant apart is its ability to exploit a recently discovered zeroday vulnerability to infect two widely used lines of home and small-office routers even when they’re secured with strong passwords or have remote administration turned off altogether, Dale Drew, chief security strategist at broadband Internet provider CenturyLink, told Ars. One of the affected Huawei devices is the EchoLife Home Gateway, and the other is the Huawei Home Gateway. Roughly 90,000 of the 100,000 newly infected devices are one of the two Huawei router models. The new malware also has a dictionary of 65,000 username and password combinations to try against other types of devices.

There’s a vulnerability in High Sierra and earlier versions of macOS that allows rogue applications to steal plaintext passwords stored in the Mac keychain, a security researcher said Monday. That’s the same day the widely anticipated update was released.
The Mac keychain is a digital vault of sorts that stores passwords and cryptographic keys. Apple engineers have designed it so that installed applications can’t access its contents without the user entering a master password. A weakness in the keychain, however, allows rogue apps to steal every plaintext password it stores with no password required. Patrick Wardle, a former National Security Agency hacker who now works for security firm Synack, posted a video demonstration here.
The video shows a Mac virtual machine running High Sierra as it installs an app. Once the app is installed, the video shows an attacker on a remote server running the Netcat networking utility. When the attacker clicks “exfil keychain” button, the app surreptitiously exfiltrates all the passwords stored in the keychain and uploads them to the server. The theft requires no user interaction beyond the initial installation of the rogue app, and neither the app nor macOS provides any warning or seeks permission.

On Tuesday, Microsoft patched a previously unknown vulnerability that researchers say was actively exploited by an undisclosed nation to install surveillance malware on one or more vulnerable computers.
The exploit, according to a blog post published Tuesday by security firm FireEye, was embedded in a Microsoft Word document. Once opened, the document exploited a zero-day vulnerability in Microsoft’s .Net framework. The exploit caused the targeted computer to install Finspy (sometimes “FinSpy”), a family of surveillance software that its controversial developer, UK-based Gamma Group, sells to governments throughout the world. Tuesday’s blog post said the document might have been used to infect an unnamed “Russian speaker.” The vulnerability, indexed as CVE-2017-8759, comes five months after FireEye disclosed a different zero-day being used to distribute Finspy.
“These exposures demonstrate the significant resources available to ‘lawful intercept’ companies and their customers,” FireEye researchers wrote. “Furthermore, Finspy has been sold to multiple clients, suggesting the vulnerability was being used against other targets.”

The mysterious group that over the past nine months has leaked millions of dollars’ worth of advanced hacking tools developed by the National Security Agency said Tuesday it will release a new batch of tools to individuals who pay a $ 21,000 subscription fee. The plans, announced in a cryptographically signed post published Tuesday morning, are generating an intense moral dilemma for security professionals around the world.
On the one hand, the Shadow Brokers, as the person or group calls itself, has in the past released potent hacking tools into the wild, including two that were used to deliver the WCry ransomware worm that infected more than 200,000 computers in 150 countries. If the group releases similarly catastrophic exploits for Windows 10 or mainstream browsers, security professionals are arguably obligated to have access to them as soon as possible to ensure patches and exploit signatures are in place to prevent similar outbreaks. On the other hand, there’s something highly unsavory and arguably unethical about whitehats paying blackhats with a track record as dark as that of the Shadow Brokers.
“It certainly creates a moral issue for me,” Matthew Hickey, cofounder of security firm Hacker House, told Ars. “Endorsing criminal conduct by paying would be the wrong message to send. Equally, I think $ 21k is a small price to pay to avoid another WannaCry situation, and I am sure many of its victims would agree with that sentiment.”

Cisco Systems has patched a critical flaw that even novice hackers could exploit using Central Intelligence Agency attack tools that were recently leaked to the Internet.
As previously reported, the zero-day exploit allowed attackers to issue commands that remotely execute malicious code on 318 models of Cisco switches. The attack code was published in early March by WikiLeaks as part of its Vault7 series of leaks, which the site is billing as the largest publication of intelligence documents ever.
The bug resides in the Cisco Cluster Management Protocol (CMP), which uses the telnet protocol to deliver signals and commands on internal networks. It stems from a failure to restrict telnet options to local communications and the incorrect processing of malformed CMP-only telnet options.

A critical Microsoft Word zero-day that was actively exploited for months connected two strange bedfellows, including government-sponsored hackers spying on Russian targets and financially motivated crooks pushing crimeware.
That assessment, made Wednesday with “moderate confidence” from researchers at security firm FireEye, is all the more intriguing because the payload delivered to the Russian targets was developed by Gamma Group, the controversial UK-based seller of so-called “lawful intercept” spyware to governments around the world. The company suffered a major setback in 2014 when a hack of its servers exposed more than 40 gigabytes of highly proprietary data showing that its software was used to spy on computers in the United States, Germany, Russia, Iran, and Bahrain. Gamma Group has continued to operate since then, as evidenced by Wednesday’s report showing that its software, known as Finspy, was installed as early as January using what until Tuesday was the zero-day vulnerability in Word.
Adding even more intrigue, the Word exploit used to install Finspy on Russian computers shares some of the same digital fingerprints as an exploit used in March to install crimeware. Known as Latenbot, the malware boasted a variety of capabilities, including credential theft, hard drive and data wiping, security software disabling, and remote desktop functions. The shared artifacts found by FireEye—which are documented in the image at the top of this post—strongly suggest the exploits used by both government spies and criminal hackers originated with the same source. That finding draws a connection between state-sponsored hacking and financially motivated online crime.

Booby-trapped documents exploiting a critical zeroday vulnerability in Microsoft Word have been sent to millions people around the world in a blitz aimed at installing Dridex, currently one of the most dangerous bank fraud threats on the Internet.
As Ars reported on Saturday, the vulnerability is notable because it bypasses exploit mitigations built into Windows, doesn’t require targets to enable macros, and works even against Windows 10, which is widely considered Microsoft’s most secure operating system ever. The flaw is known to affect most or all Windows versions of Word, but so far no one has ruled out that exploits might also be possible against Mac versions. Researchers from security firms McAfee and FireEye warned that the malicious Word documents are being attached to e-mails, but didn’t reveal the scope or ultimate objective of the campaign.
In a blog post published Monday night, researchers from Proofpoint filled in some of the missing details, saying the exploit documents were sent to millions of recipients across numerous organizations that were primarily located in Australia. Proofpoint researchers wrote:

There’s a new zeroday attack in the wild that’s surreptitiously installing malware on fully-patched computers. It does so by exploiting a vulnerability in most or all versions of Microsoft Word.
The attack starts with an e-mail that attaches a malicious Word document, according to a blog post published Saturday by researchers from security firm FireEye. Once opened, exploit code concealed inside the document connects to an attacker-controlled server. It downloads a malicious HTML application file that’s disguised to look like a document created in Microsoft’s Rich Text Format. Behind the scenes, the .hta file downloads additional payloads from “different well-known malware families.”
The attack is notable for several reasons. First, it bypasses most exploit mitigations: This capability allows it to work even against Windows 10, which security experts widely agree is Microsoft’s most secure operating system to date. Second, unlike the vast majority of the Word exploits seen in the wild over the past few years, this new attack doesn’t require targets to enable macros. Last, before terminating, the exploit opens a decoy Word document in an attempt to hide any sign of the attack that just happened.

As the second Tuesday of the month, Valentines Day should have been a day for patches in addition to lovers; there’s a known and widely publicized crashing flaw in Microsoft’s SMB file-sharing protocol, and a fix for this bug (and, no doubt, several others) is widely anticipated. A few hours before the patches were due to go live, Microsoft announced that they were “delayed” due to an unspecified “last-minute issue.”
The company now says that this delay means that the patches won’t be coming in February at all. Instead, they’ll be rolled into March’s update, which should arrive on March 14.
As well as the SMB fix, the now-March update will change the way patches are delivered for Windows 7, 8.1, Server 2008 R2, Server 2012, and Server 2012 R2: Internet Explorer’s updates will now be delivered in a separate package from the OS fixes.
