From bullying countries into voting in line with Washington to proclaiming that the US and Russia will never be friends, retiring US ambassador Nikki Haley has said a lot of eyebrow-raising things at the UN. Here are some of them.

US President Donald Trump and Haley seem to be parting on very good terms, with Trump hinting she’ll still have a role to play. Though Haley initially opposed Trump’s candidacy, she came around to eagerly defend her boss. After world leaders laughed during Trump’s UNGA speech praising his own achievements last month, Haley suggested it was actually a sign of respect and appreciation of his honesty.

I deal with these leaders every single day. I know exactly how they think. Do they love America? No. Do they respect America? Now they do. When he said that, they love how honest he is, and it’s not diplomatic, and they find it funny.

‘Mess with Israel – you’ll mess with US’

Israel seems to be most upset by Haley’s resignation from her UN job, since the envoy for Washington often ended up championing Israeli interests at the world body. Statements like this one perfectly explain Tel Aviv’s grief:

“It was abusive, how bad the international community was to Israel. It reminded me of a kid being bullied in the playground… I just wasn’t going to have it. It was just so upsetting to see, that I just started yelling at everybody…”

We had the back of Israel, and if they were going to mess with Israel they had to mess with the US.

The US envoy was also never shy to pressure the UN member states into voting the way Washington saw fit. The most notable example of such extortion was the vote on recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital last December.

As you consider your vote, I encourage you to know the president and the US take this vote personally. The president will be watching this vote carefully and has requested I report back on those who voted against us.

The threats did not work, however, as the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly rejected Washington’s unilateral recognition of the disputed city as Israeli capital.

Russia is ‘never going to be our friend’

When it came to relations with Moscow, the top US diplomat just wasn’t very diplomatic on many occasions, instead choosing to amplify Russophobic rhetoric put forth by Trump’s opposition.

We don’t trust Russia. We don’t trust Putin. We never will. They’re never going to be our friend. That’s just a fact.

“They are aggressive and they can be difficult to work with in the Council… And they do try to cause some disruption, but we manage them and we continue to remind them what their place is.”

Haley was fully on board with accusations that Moscow meddled in the 2016 US election, calling them aggression on Russia’s part. Election meddling, she said, is Russia’s “weapon of choice and we have to make sure we get in front of it.”

When a country can come interfere in another country’s elections, that is warfare.

‘Fight until they’re gone’

The ambassador showed no sign of awareness that her comments about interference sounded ironic and hypocritical when placed next to some others she made – regarding places like Venezuela or Syria.

Last month, Haley joined Venezuelan protesters outside the UN headquarters in New York, shouting into the megaphone:

We are going to fight for Venezuela and we are going to continue doing it until [President Nicolas] Maduro is gone!

The US envoy even showed hints of psychic powers, as she tried to downplay Russia’s warnings that Western-backed terrorists were preparing a false flag chemical attack in Syria in order to set up Damascus. Gazing straight into the future, she appeared to point her finger at President Bashar Assad’s government.

If there are chemical weapons that are used, we know exactly who’s going to use them.

In July, the US stunned the international community by withdrawing from the UN Human Rights Council, and the American ambassador had some strong words to back the move.

Judging by how it has fallen short of its promise, the Human Rights Council is the UN’s greatest failure. It has taken the idea of human dignity… and it has reduced it to just another instrument of international politics.

“Its members included some of the worst human rights violators – the dictatorships of Cuba, China and Venezuela all have seats on the Council,” Haley fumed.

Freedom fighters of Binomo

When dealing with other states, the US envoy tried her best to uphold an image of an expert on international affairs including on those nation that… well, didn’t even exist.

In a scandalous YouTube recording made by two Russian pranksters, posing as a high-ranked Polish official, Haley was asked to comment on the aspirations of the nation of Binomo in the South China Sea.

We’re aware of that. We’ve been watching that [Binomo situation] very closely. And I think we will continue to watch as we deal with the issues that keep coming up about the South China Sea.

She also said that Russia “absolutely” meddled in the country’s election as well – a truly extraordinary achievement, given that Binomo was entirely made up.

Despite Spain shootout hero Igor Akinfeev saving one penalty and nearly tipping another, Russia, which had equalized late in extra time thanks to Mario Fernandes, lost 3-4 in the penalty series, due Fernandes slicing his effort straight past the post.

“It was a really bad penalty he took,” said Schmeichel, who otherwise praised the naturalized Brazilian-born player. “You have to hit the target.”

Schmeichel said that Russia should be “proud” of their performance, and remember that they themselves inflicted a penalty defeat on Spain in the previous round as they come to terms with their heartbreak.

He also heaped praise on Croatia, who have scrapped past two teams in the knockouts, despite failing to always show the sparkling football expected of them.

“Croatia are a proper team with good players in every position. They have players that will fight to the end, and we’ve seen that today,” said Schmeichel, particularly singling out Subasic, who appeared to have sustained a hamstring injury near the end of normal time, only to make a string of difficult saves in extra time.

Schmeichel now believes that Croatia will overcome England, and if quality of football translates into results, confront Belgium in the World Cup final next Sunday.

Just days after his meeting last week with Kim Jong-un, President Trump vowed to only drop sanctions targeting the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea once it has gotten rid of its nuclear weapons.

Asked on Friday when sanctions relief may come for the DPRK, Trump responded “When we can be sure there will be no more nuclear.” Trump statements contradict reports in North Korean media which suggested the president offered to lift sanctions while the DPRK pursues step-by-step denuclearization.

On Monday, South Korea said that sanctions against its northern neighbor could be eased once Pyongyang takes “substantive steps towards denuclearization,” AFP reported.

RT: What do you make of these contradicting reports regarding sanctions? Is it possible that Trump made a promise in Singapore that members of his administration, perhaps, like Pompeo, don’t want him to keep?

Brian Becker:  It is very possible. If you think about the Trump administration, the only thing you really can count on is you can count on nothing, because there are so many contradictory statements. Clearly, the DPRK had a very measured approach. They said that they, as a precondition for these talks to go forward, require the US to normalize, improve relations between the US and the DPRK. Secondly, to establish an ongoing peace mechanism so that war does not happen once again on the Korean Peninsula. And it was only the number third point of the joint declaration that talked about denuclearization. So, if the US now comes back and says “Look, we’re going to retain the hostile policies towards the DPRK, we’re going to try to use food and weapons to starve your people and deprive them of the things they need to do to get better.” That’s going to be a non-starter for the DPRK. So, the Trump administration still has to make a basic decision here.

RT: Trump and others in the media, as you say, are framing the joint declaration signed by both leaders last week as a promise that DPRK will denuclearize. But less emphasis has been placed on other aspects of the letter, for example, that it states “the US and the DPRK commit to establish new US-DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity.” What is the significance of the statement in terms of what North Korea might be demanding from the US?

BB: What is most important is that the words you read just now are the way the joint declaration begins. That’s number one. Denuclearization is only number three and from the point of view of the DPRK recognizing that it was the US that introduced nuclear weapons into the Korean Peninsula in 1958 and still uses B-1 bombers and B-2 bombers and B-52 bombers, nuclear capable aircraft to carry out exercises that simulate the destruction of North Korea. The North Koreans are saying very clearly: “Yes, we are prepared to carry out the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula but only in exchange for a new policy from the US.” That means a peace treaty, that means the normalization of relations, that means the easing of the economic sanctions. That doesn’t mean that all things are going to come to a halt right now. Donald Trump actually wants to make this happen, he wants to be the man who did this.

The DPRK, on the other hand, knows that they have a secure position, they have a nuclear deterrent, it is credible, they have a missile technology program, that they can hit long-range targets. Right now the world sees the DPRK was willing to make many efforts for unilateral concessions in a row, including a moratorium on these nuclear missile technology tests. They’re now waiting for the reciprocation from the US. If Mike Pompeo after the fact goes back and says “Oh no, we’re going to have a hard line, we’re going to have complete sanctions, we’re going to try to starve you” and we’re going, perhaps, to go to the Libya model, using the rhetoric of Pence and John Bolton, they’re not going to go anywhere.

A 2-year-old polar bear rescued from Russia’s Far East who now lives in the Moscow Region has developed not only an interest in football, but quite impressive prediction skills, her carers say, introducing Nika the Bear as an official FIFA oracle.

The female bear, who had been injured and left all alone, wandering off the normal polar bears’ migration route, was rescued a year ago in Chukotka. Her psychic abilities seemingly helped her survive, as she crawled under the house of kind-hearted locals.

The people had been feeding fish to the huge and potentially dangerous animal until vets from the Moscow Zoo were alerted and transported the bear to a Moscow Region nursery.

“We’ve noticed our bear has a sixth sense, she knows what day the cleaners will come in, whether she’ll get ordinary grub or get treated with some delicious food. She can even sense new balls coming her way,” Nika’s carer, Aleksandr Igorov, says.

Football is the bear’s real passion, he adds: “She plays really well with soccer balls and swims with them in the pool. She loves them so much that sometimes uses the balls as her pillow when she sleeps.”

Bearing in mind Nika’s skills in predicting what’s going to happen, the Moscow Zoo has contacted FIFA officials, with the bear now supporting Welcome2018 – the official tourist platform for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Along with her now part-time oracle job, Nika is believed “to play a valuable role in the Moscow Zoo reproduction and conservation program for polar bears,” its spokesperson said.

So far, Nika has predicted Mexico to win over Portugal in their Confed Cup game on Monday, and Australia to be defeated by Germany on Tuesday.

What is certain is that Nika will get plenty of food treats between June 17 and July 2. To make a prediction and choose her match-winning favorite throughout the tournament, she will be given two bowls of food.

The same method to predict results for the Confed Cup matches is used with another “animal psychic,” Achilles the cat from St. Petersburg.

Earlier this week, the feline oracle, who has been long living in the famous Hermitage museum to protect its exhibits of world importance from rodents, was revealed as the cup’s animal predictor.
