Today’s BBC Breakfast was hosted by Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty and one topic being discussed was the demonstrations taking place across 60 British towns and cities over, what the young generation see as the government’s inaction over global warning.

Joining them in the studio was 13-year-old George, an environmental campaigner to discuss the movement, as well as the Energy Minister Claire Perry who was on a live video link from Cambridge.

Stayt and Munchetty allowed their guest to ask Perry his questions directly, but the MP got a little too carried away with answering and the hosts stepped in to take control and steer the interview.

“George, you’ve done a lot of research on this stuff haven’t you?” Stayt asked and then continued: “So what I’m going to say is, would you like to ask the Energy Minister a question.”

Viewers then saw the young campaigner step up and say: “What action will you be taking to reassure our generation about climate change? Because in the end it’s going to be us that are going to have to live with your decision.”

“The UK was the first country to wake up to this,” Perry began and added: “ten years ago we passed a piece of legislation in Parliament, The Climate Change Act, we were the first country to do that.”

The Energy Minister then continued for a few minutes, but failed to answer Perry’s initial question and that’s when Stayt stepped in.

“Minister, if I may, I’m going to chip in because George is very polite,” he said before turning to George and saying: “Ministers sometimes talk for a long time and don’t let people ask questions.”

“Well really I wanted to [ask] what sort of numbers are we aspiring to be in the future?” He said.

After apologising for rambling off topic, Perry replied: “Our current plans are to cut our carbon emissions by 80 percent.

“We know we’ve got to cut those carbon emissions but we also need to take carbon out of the systems, best way to do that is to plant trees and change the way we farm the landscape.”

It was then Munchetty’s turn to hold the Minister accountable regarding the figures she gave and she gently interrupted her remarking: “Minister. Sorry, sorry for interrupting it’s Munchetty here.

“It’s great to have targets, all like to hear targets and as George said we want to hear some numbers. Problem is we hear all these targets and hear all these numbers and we don’t get there, were not given guarantees when they’re going to be achieved.

“That’s why George and hundreds of other kids are going out today, taking a day off school and saying ‘we don’t think you’re doing enough for us, because we just hear lots of numbers and words, we don’t actually see it making a difference to our lives’.”

Finally explaining the answer to George’s original question, Perry commented: “Again to chuck a couple of things we can do is move our energy system away from coal and towards renewable energy, we’ve done that in the UK we’re up to over 30% from renewables.

“The world’s biggest wind farm is opening off the shores of Yorkshire, these turbines are bigger than the Gherkin and there will be almost 200 hundred of them. Enough power for million homes, we are delivering.

“But look, I completely accept what George feels, and I feel very strong, we’ve got to do more and the world has got to do more. One country is not going to solve this problem on its own.”

The demonstrations taking place today have been inspired by 15-year-old Swedish student Greta Thunberg, who has been missing school every Friday to protest outside the Swedish parliament.

The UK strikes have been organised by a coalition of YouthStrike4Climate, the UK Student Climate Network and the UK Youth Climate Coalition to demand action from the British Government.

Kevin McKidd Recounts 'Tearful' Post-Golden Globes Reunion With Former Grey's Anatomy Co-Star Sandra Oh: 'We Hugged for a Long, Long Time' https://briefnews.eu/kevin-mckidd-recounts-tearful-post-golden-globes-reunion-with-former-greys-anatomy-co-star-sandra-oh-we-hugged-for-a-long-long-time/ https://briefnews.eu/kevin-mckidd-recounts-tearful-post-golden-globes-reunion-with-former-greys-anatomy-co-star-sandra-oh-we-hugged-for-a-long-long-time/#respond Thu, 17 Jan 2019 01:25:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kevin-mckidd-recounts-tearful-post-golden-globes-reunion-with-former-greys-anatomy-co-star-sandra-oh-we-hugged-for-a-long-long-time/ In the immediate aftermath of Sandra Oh’s Golden Globe co-hosting stint/Lead Actress victory last week, Grey’s Anatomy star Kevin McKidd didn’t just shower his former leading lady with congratulations on social media. He brought the message to the Killing Eve star in person.

“I hung out with her that night after she won,” McKidd tells TVLine. “She invited me to her after-party. It was pretty amazing to see her get such props and be honored in that way. I was a bit Sandra Oh Golden Globetearful. She saw me across the room and she ran over and we hugged for a long, long time.”

McKidd, meanwhile, says Oh aced her job as Globes’ co-emcee. “She was terrified about the hosting thing,” he notes. “It’s not what we [as actors] are trained to do. But she nailed it. I was really proud of her.”

McKidd has maintained a tight relationship with Oh since the actress departed Grey’s four years ago. What’s the secret behind their enduring bond? “We really trust each other and know each other,” he says. “During all of those hours working together [on Grey’s] we watched each others’ lives unfold… When she was going through a hard time, or I was, [we] leaned on each other.

“Some co-stars hate each other,” McKidd adds with a chuckle. “But I feel very fortunate in these last years of my career to have been blessed with Sandra Oh and now [current Grey’s squeeze] Caterina Scorsone.”

Grey’s Anatomy kicks off the second half of Season 15 this Thursday (8/7c, ABC).

Kevin Hart Responds to Backlash Over Ellen Interview: 'We All Have the Ability to Grow — Please Grasp This and Use It' https://briefnews.eu/kevin-hart-responds-to-backlash-over-ellen-interview-we-all-have-the-ability-to-grow-please-grasp-this-and-use-it/ https://briefnews.eu/kevin-hart-responds-to-backlash-over-ellen-interview-we-all-have-the-ability-to-grow-please-grasp-this-and-use-it/#respond Sun, 06 Jan 2019 10:54:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kevin-hart-responds-to-backlash-over-ellen-interview-we-all-have-the-ability-to-grow-please-grasp-this-and-use-it/

One day after his controversial, Oscars-centric interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Kevin Hart is going on the defensive.

In an Instagram post on Saturday, the embattled comedian addressed the backlash that has stemmed from his Q&A with DeGeneres, in which DeGeneres revealed that she personally contacted the Academy and recommended that Hart be reinstated as Oscars host.

“When did we get to the point where we forgot that we all learn, then we all have the ability to grow and with that growth comes a wealth of knowledge,” Hart wrote. “You can’t change without a [sic] understanding of what GROWTH means… Please grasp this and use it in 2019.”

During Hart’s interview on Ellen Friday, DeGeneres had acknowledged the homophobic Twitter jokes that led Hart to step down from hosting the Oscars in December, after he had refused to apologize for the resurfaced posts. But DeGeneres relegated Hart’s critics to the “haters” category, telling him, “That’s a small group of people being very loud. We’re a huge group of people who love you and want to see you host the Oscars.”

Hart told DeGeneres that he felt “trolls” were responsible for the “attack on [his] character” that led him to step back from the hosting gig, adding that he doesn’t have a “homophobic bone in [his] body.”

Both Hart and DeGeneres quickly became targets of criticism after the interview aired: Hart’s apology was viewed by many as insincere, while others were disappointed in DeGeneres, a member of the LGBT community, for using her platform to support Hart.

CNN journalist Don Lemon delivered an emotional message to Hart on Friday’s CNN Tonight broadcast, saying, “This is the time to hear other people out, to understand why they might have been offended. And I don’t see any meaningful outreach to the LGBT community.”

'We had failed Dan and the other players': OHL commissioner calls abuse allegations 'sickening' https://briefnews.eu/we-had-failed-dan-and-the-other-players-ohl-commissioner-calls-abuse-allegations-sickening/ https://briefnews.eu/we-had-failed-dan-and-the-other-players-ohl-commissioner-calls-abuse-allegations-sickening/#respond Fri, 30 Nov 2018 16:32:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/we-had-failed-dan-and-the-other-players-ohl-commissioner-calls-abuse-allegations-sickening/

The president of the Canadian Hockey League admits his organization failed the players under its care.

David Branch says he didn't know how bad things were for Daniel Carcillo and other players who went public this week with allegations of brutal hazing.

In an interview with CBC Sports, Branch called their allegations "sickening."

"We had failed Dan and the other players involved in my view, and it's shocking. You know, I don't know how else to put it," said Branch, who is also the commissioner of the Ontario Hockey League.

Over the last few days, four members of the 2002-03 Sarnia Sting have come forward to tell their stories of what they went through.

"I moved away from home at 17 to chase my dream of making it to the NHL and making something of myself. And what myself and 11 of us had to endure that year was daily abuse," said Carcillo, who went on to win two Stanley Cups with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Watch Branch discuss his reaction to the abuse accusations:

CHL commissioner David Branch spoke to the National about the league's shortcomings in dealing with abuse. 2:57

Carcillo detailed being stuffed into a bus bathroom naked and having teammates spit tobacco juice on him. He also told of players being stripped naked, tied down and beaten with a sawed-off goalie stick.

Carcillo contacted Branch directly

Some of his teammates, including goaltender Ryan Munce, quickly came forward to corroborate Carcillo's allegations and tell their own stories.

"There's guys that were acting like KKK [Ku Klux Klan] because I was dating a girl of a different nationality, doing Hitler signs in front of our Jewish teammate until he went to tears," Munce recalled.

"This is constant abuse day in, day out, strapping a guy to the table and beating him with belts and things, that was the 'rookie of the day.'"

Branch says Carcillo contacted him directly during that season about what was going on in Sarnia. He visited the team to investigate, but was told by management and the coaching staff that no serious incidents had occurred.

Watch Daniel Carcillo detail the abuse he endured at 17:

The two-time Stanley Cup champion discusses the hazing incident he remembers most vividly, when he says one of his OHL coaches took part in whipping a teammate with a belt. 0:51

"There was one situation that they described, which while it was dangerous in my view it wasn't something that called for any particular discipline," Branch recalls.

"That situation was rookie players being put in the laundry cart of the team and pushed down the hall and you know kind of recklessly bouncing off the walls and things of that nature. And that was really the extent of what came at me and the discussion as I recall."

Jeff Perry, Sarnia's head coach in 2002-03, initially disputed Carcillo's claims that management was aware of the abuse. However, Carcillo tweeted on Thursday that Perry was among members of management who have taken accountability.

A call to Perry by CBC Sports on Wednesday seeking further comment was not returned.

Branch says a major change for the league around hazing came in 2005. That year, the league issued a major set of fines and suspensions to the Windsor Spitfires over a series of hazing incidents.

"That was the first time and, quite frankly, the only time it's come to me about issues around initiation, hazing and the like," Branch says.

Nonetheless, he says the league has instituted a series of initiatives including a zero-tolerance hazing policy.

'We had to support the players'

"We had to support the players, make sure they understood what's right, what's acceptable, what's not. And more importantly, I would suggest, here's how you can reach out if you're not comfortable with going to your own coach or general manager," Branch says.

Branch also points to a number of mental health programs the league has put in place.

"People look at our league that it's the No. 1 development league in the world for the National Hockey League, which it is. But our focus the last 10 to 15 years is how do we support the person? And that's where we've made such tremendous progress, which we're so proud of."

Watch as Carcillo's former teammate echoes experiences of abuse:

In an exclusive interview to CBC News, former Sarnia Sting goaltender Ryan Munce details the abuse he suffered while playing junior hockey. 3:11

Others in the hockey community seem to echo Branch's sentiments that hazing is a by-product of an old hockey culture that no longer exists.

"I think there needs to be an understanding that things have changed greatly," says Eric Wellwood, the coach of the OHL's Flint Firebirds.

"Through my experience in the OHL, from the time I was a 16-year-old back in 2006 until being now a head coach in the league, they've eliminated all these bad, bad things that surround the league — in particular, hazing. And in the end, I think that the OHL deserve credit and not to be smeared with a story that may be true but that happened a long time ago."

On Thursday night, the OHL released a statement reiterating its commitment to the anti-hazing policy.

"In light of the recent attention that has been paid to the issue of hazing, the league has spoken with team management, and all of our member teams are providing a refresher to all staff and players about this most important topic," read the statement.

"Our hope is that through conversation, education and awareness, the attitudes that lead to hazing behaviour and these unthinkable actions disappear from sport and society."

Hope that change has happened

A number of current NHL players have also reacted to Carcillo's comments, including Vancouver Canucks forward Bo Horvat.

"It's tough to hear that kind of stuff, but I think that kind of faded out in my era of junior hockey," Horvat says.

"I've heard a lot about it and heard what guys have gone through in past years, but I think we really cracked down on it when I started coming in junior, so I didn't get any of that kind of stuff. Thank God."

Carcillo and the others who have come forward hope Branch and Horvat are right. Carcillo also says he appreciates the members of the Sarnia Sting who have reached out to talk about what happened.

At the same time, change in hockey doesn't happen overnight.

"When you're singularly focused on a goal, it's kind of scary what you'll accept to try and achieve that goal," says Carcillo.

"And if you talk and if you talk too much in the hockey world and you ask too many questions, they don't like that. They'd like you to be a good little soldier and to do what they say."

DWTS' Juan Pablo Di Pace on Shocking Elimination: 'We Were Bringing Art to the Show' — Plus: Who Should Win? https://briefnews.eu/dwts-juan-pablo-di-pace-on-shocking-elimination-we-were-bringing-art-to-the-show-plus-who-should-win/ https://briefnews.eu/dwts-juan-pablo-di-pace-on-shocking-elimination-we-were-bringing-art-to-the-show-plus-who-should-win/#respond Sat, 17 Nov 2018 23:10:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dwts-juan-pablo-di-pace-on-shocking-elimination-we-were-bringing-art-to-the-show-plus-who-should-win/ The Dancing With the Stars ballroom was a sea of dropped jaws on Monday night, after Season 27 frontrunner Juan Pablo Di Pace failed to score a spot in the Nov. 19 finale. (When your elimination inspires a Change.org petition, you know you’re doing something right.)

TVLine spoke with the Fuller House actor after his surprising ouster, and he admitted the elimination was “heartbreaking,” despite being touched by the “outpouring of love and outrage and anger” from fans.

“People are so amazing, and the fans are so vocal, so I’m good. I’m really good,” Di Pace told us. “But I was still shocked and sad to lose. For me, it’s a talent and a love for dance competition. It’s heartbreaking when you work your ass off.”

In order to determine who goes home each week, Dancing With the Stars combines the judges’ scores (which can reach a maximum of 30 points) with votes from the home audience. But the current system weighs viewers’ votes more heavily, which means even a well-scored contestant like Di Pace can be sent packing if he doesn’t get enough support from the audience. In fact, Di Pace was sent home even after scoring perfect 30s for both of Monday’s performances.

DWTS Juan Pablo Eliminated“It’s like a chess game. Every moment, every interview, every dance, every comment from a judge could either hinder you or get you to the next week,” Di Pace said. “We knew we weren’t the ones with millions of fans. We were the ones with a lot of hard work and passion and talent. So I wasn’t sure I was going through.”

On the heels of Di Pace’s elimination, incensed fans are calling for changes to the voting system; some have even suggested the introduction of a “judges’ save,” through which Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli can spare a couple that would otherwise be booted. (And this isn’t the first time such an idea has been posed: Glee alum Heather Morris was also prematurely eliminated from Season 24, which sparked a similar discussion about changes to the voting.)

“The show’s been going on for 27 seasons, and looking at the thousands of comments I’ve got, people aren’t happy with the system. So, yeah, 27 seasons later, maybe it is time for a refresh, a little nip and tuck,” Di Pace offered. “Maybe instead of being completely a popularity contest, it could actually be more of a skill contest. But who am I to say? I think the fans’ outrage will probably work for something.”

Di Pace and partner Cheryl Burke have been invited to reprise their Argentine tango on Monday’s season finale — and even though “it’s not about the trophy” for Di Pace, he regrets that his partnership with Burke had to come to an early end.

“If I’m going to be objective, we were the ones bringing pieces of art to the show. We were bringing really good, amazing pieces,” he said. “For that reason alone — the fact that we didn’t get to perform one last freestyle, which was going to be out of this world — I’m sad.” (With reporting by Andy Swift)

Avengers 4: Big Quantum Realm hint as Marvel boss Kevin Feige promises 'we will explore' https://briefnews.eu/avengers-4-big-quantum-realm-hint-as-marvel-boss-kevin-feige-promises-we-will-explore/ https://briefnews.eu/avengers-4-big-quantum-realm-hint-as-marvel-boss-kevin-feige-promises-we-will-explore/#respond Thu, 08 Nov 2018 14:27:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/avengers-4-big-quantum-realm-hint-as-marvel-boss-kevin-feige-promises-we-will-explore/

The end credits scene for Ant-Man and the Wasp, released over the summer, saw Scott Lang stuck in the Quantum Realm after his nearest and dearest were killed off by Thanos’s Snap from Infinity War.

But will it play a crucial role in the Marvel heroes overturning the Snap and bringing multiple superheroes back to life?

Speaking in the book Marvel Studios: The First 10 Years, Feige said: “At the end of Ant-Man we followed Scott Lang into the Quantum Realm for the first time.

“We were beginning to peel back the onion that would later be completely peeled back in Doctor Strange as we go into the multiverse. So that was our little test into that.”

He added: “But now the Quantum Realm is a whole other territory that we can play with to tell our stories.

“This Quantum Realm is much larger than we ever imagined, and there are all sorts of adventures to be had at that level, which perhaps we will explore in another film.”

Is Avengers 4 that other film? We will have to wait and see.

For now, a countdown clock has been launched on the movie’s official page on the Marvel site.

It comes as the wait for the movie’s official title and its trailer continues.

Previous alleged leaks suggesting it would be called Avengers: Annihilation have not been confirmed or debunked by the studio at this stage.

However the Thanos conundrum is resolved, there are other MCU adventures waiting in the wings.

For one, Spider-Man: Far From Home has already finished filming – with Tom Holland back as Peter Parker.

Parker was, as fans will know, one of the fatalities of the Snap in Infinity War – so how he comes to be fighting fit for a whole new movie remains to be seen.

The actors are certainly not giving anything away – asked if he’s in Avengers 4 by Jimmy Fallon, Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) said simply: “I’m dust, baby.

“I’m just out there. I’m in the ether. I’m probably part of your food chain. I’m in your stomach somewhere.”

Avengers 4 is out on April 26 in the UK and May 3 in the US.

Star Wars 9 leaks Luke scene with TWO characters? Fans NOT impressed 'We don't want this' https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leaks-luke-scene-with-two-characters-fans-not-impressed-we-dont-want-this/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leaks-luke-scene-with-two-characters-fans-not-impressed-we-dont-want-this/#respond Fri, 28 Sep 2018 18:34:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leaks-luke-scene-with-two-characters-fans-not-impressed-we-dont-want-this/

More and more news is emerging from the Star Wars sets.

Episode 9 has been filming for a month already and there have been leaked photographs as well as descriptions of concept art, scenes and sets.

Numerous reports place Mark Hamill filming at least two scenes at Pinewood in October with two of the new leads from the final trilogy. Everyone is eager to find out how Luke Sywalker will return. Will he be shown as a Force Ghost, in flashbacks or somehow brought back to life using the Force?

New leaks describe an exciting and dramatic Luke scene in great detail and the fan reactions have not been positive.

Two things must be remembered. First, leaks, even if confirmed, may not materialise on screen when the final cut hits cinemas. Second, a very vocal section of the fandom was outraged by much of Episode 8 and has very specific demands for Episode 9. They do not represent the entire fandom, but they are clearly a significant part.

The leaks says: “Both Kylo Ren and Rey are in a jungle at night. Lots of moonlight shining on the two characters.

“Suddenly the Force Ghost of Luke appears in the distance. As Luke is walking closer to Kylo and Rey he appears young like the Luke we saw in Return of the Jedi. Then an older man without a beard, eventually morphing into the Luke Skywalker we saw on the planet Crait with the beard.

“At this point Luke’s ghost is on top of a boulder and appears to be giving Kylo Ren and Rey a lecture.”

This certainly ties in with newly clean-shaven pictures Mark Hamill posted just before he started filming.

It is also a totally new way of presenting a Force Ghost. Previously Star wars has only shown one incarnation of Anakin, Yoda or Obi-Wan. This was highlighted by the removal of the first Anakin Sebastian Shaw force ghost being replaced by Hayden Christensen in later reissues of The Return of the Jedi.

JJ Abrams could be entering a new version of a Force ghost into official canon who is able to manipulate how he appears to the living. Although it seem rather extreme for Hamill to shave his beard for a few flickering seconds of this scene.

The scene also reveals that Kylo and Rey will be reunited in Episode 9 and go on some form of journey together.

Despite all these major revealtions, the fan reactions to the spoiler video have overwhelmingly focussed on one thing. A section of the fandom wants Luke brought back alive at any cost. Any other alternative, they say, will only prolong their boycott of the latest Star Wars movies.

Comments included: “It will be really tough if not impossible for JJ, Lucas Films, etc., to pull off a successful film that redeems past mistakes without bringing Luke back in the flesh.”

“Luke back, in the flesh, alive, or we’re done.”

“As I write this there are 187 comments. About 90% give or take say the same thing. No Luke. No movie. Ive seen the same on other channels. I get it. Some people liked last Jedi. That’s fine. Most did not. The second part of a concluding trilogy is not the place to make an indie film where you deconstruct the one character that got us here. Most can agree his character was poorly treated in episode 8.”

“Happy reading the comments that everyone is in agreement. No GHOSTS please. A living Luke only.”

“No live luke, no ticket. Simple as that.”

“No force ghost Luke please. He needs to be alive. Keep repeating this but if Disney checks this stuff they need to know and see it over and over.”

“This trilogy doesn’t have to be about him but don’t treat the character like garbage.”

'We became a stronger family': Supporters rally as Humboldt Broncos take ice for home opener https://briefnews.eu/we-became-a-stronger-family-supporters-rally-as-humboldt-broncos-take-ice-for-home-opener/ https://briefnews.eu/we-became-a-stronger-family-supporters-rally-as-humboldt-broncos-take-ice-for-home-opener/#respond Wed, 12 Sep 2018 16:23:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/we-became-a-stronger-family-supporters-rally-as-humboldt-broncos-take-ice-for-home-opener/ The new Humboldt Broncos will be surrounded by support when they take home ice on Wednesday for their first regular season game since the bus crash in the spring.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team were on their way to Nipawin, Sask., for a playoff game on April 6 when their bus was struck by a semi.

The crash killed 16 people including players, team staff and members of the media.

The team spent the summer rebuilding and recruiting new players. They will face off against the Nipawin Hawks at the Elgar Petersen Arena at 6:30 p.m. CST.

Spike in mental health needs

Executive director with Partners Family Services Hayley Kennedy said a mental health support team will be at the rink.

For the players, the home opener is surrounded by pressure, expectations and nervousness, Kennedy said.

During this fiscal year, which started in July, the organization has seen a 20 per cent increase in people seeking mental health support in Humboldt.

Kennedy said in the last five months, people in the community have each been grieving the crash very differently.

Hayley Kennedy, executive director with Partners Family Services in Humboldt, said the organization has seen a 20 per cent increase in people seeking mental health support since the bus crash. (CBC News)

"That can be really challenging, especially if your own timeline, or how things look for you, isn't what you'd expect from your neighbour," she said. "We are fortunate as a community that there has been a ton of support for us locally, provincially and from across Canada.

"That certainly has made a difference to know that we have such strong support."

Kennedy said she expects the game to be a step in the right direction for the community as a whole.

"Some of those pieces of finding our normal I think are really important," she said. "The ability to come back to this arena on a Friday or Saturday night and sit in their regular seats again, that definitely has a healing piece to it.

"It will be emotional and some of it will be difficult but…it will be healing for the heart."

Someone to confide in

Mark Popovic is the skills and development coach for the Broncos. Popovic said his role, which is typically reserved for NHL teams, will not act as an authority figure for the players, but more of a confidant.

"Ìt can be a little bit of a lonely world in junior hockey. Most of these players are living away from home, they're living with host families," Popovic said. "It's nice to have someone you can trust and open up to and who's been there before.

"One of the reasons I started doing this stuff was because when I was in junior hockey it was something I really needed as a player and a person, somebody to confide in, to talk hockey, to talk life, outside of your parents and the coaches."

Mark Popovic, skills and development coach for the Broncos, says he wants to be there for players both on and off the ice. (CBC News)

Popovic, who played professional hockey, will also be on the ice to help along with the other coaches.

"We're all working together to support these players in any way they need it," he said.

Healing together

Cory Popoff, Humboldt Collegiate Institute principal, said the new school year has offered a new beginning for students.

"I can tell everyday we're moving closer to being OK. We're starting to laugh a little more. We're starting to have more fun," he said. "It's tremendous to see. We've definitely turned a corner in that regard."

Last year, students were offered support from personal counselors and mental health counselors from the community, school division, health region and surrounding areas.

There is also an in-house counsellor at the high school.

Similar supports were extended to school staff.

Cory Popoff, Humboldt Collegiate Institute principal, said the community is taking the next step toward healing. (CBC News)

"Acknowledging the tragedy I think was one of the toughest things we've had to do as a staff and as students," he said. "One of two things can happen as a result of a tragedy like this, you either break up or you become a stronger family.

"We became a stronger family."

Popoff said the teachers have been diligent when it comes to keeping tabs on students.

"We're able to find out almost immediately if a student is struggling and is outside their normal behaviour," he said.

Popoff is a Broncos season ticket holder and said he will be attending the home opener. He said he expects to see many of his students at the sold out game.

"Our community is very good at supporting our Broncos through thick and thin, through good times and bad," he said.

"I can't wait to watch some Bronco hockey."

Thousands of ethnic Koreans living in Japan pledge loyalty to Pyongyang. Many of them have never actually been in North Korea but, against all odds, still consider its leaders as their own and the communist country as homeland.

About 150,000 Japanese Koreans remain loyal to Pyongyang, which makes up around a quarter of the local Korean diaspora, the new documentary produced by Berlin-based Redfish Media reports. They call themselves “Joseon Koreans,” using the old medieval name of undivided Korea.

Despite living in the heart of Japanese capitalist society, the community strongly identifies with North Korea and praises its leaders. “We feel close to them. We are united, and they stand united with us,” 95-year-old Mr. Baik explains. “[We’re standing] together, always together.”

Baik and ethnic Koreans like him cherish their roots, keep North’s flags and memorabilia, and enjoy listening to communist songs and anthems. They have been living in Japan since the beginning of the 20th century, when Korea was proclaimed a Japanese colony and later liberated by allied armies during WWII. Korean expats were subsequently stripped of their Japanese citizenship. When the citizenship was restored, many refused to accept it. The only thing they rely on is the support from the North, which funds their schools and cultural institutions.

The North’s sympathizers continue living under constant suspicion and mistrust from the Japanese government. They are also targeted and harassed by the local nationalists. “They say things like ‘go back to your country’ and ‘you Korean cockroaches,'” recalls Kim Song Myong, a 24-year-old student activist. “They say things like ‘kill all Koreans, good and bad.’ When we hear this, we feel very intimidated and can’t even use our real Korean names.”
