Eurostar employees based at London St Pancras station are walking out for 24 hours on Saturday 28 July.

Around 140 members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union will be taking part in industrial action.

They are currently disputing working conditions with the railway operator.

However, Eurostar is planning to run a normal service during the strike.

Staff will stop working at 12.01am Saturday, with the strike ending at 11.59pm on the same day.

According to RMT, the Eurostar staff are in a dispute over “shocking and dangerous working conditions resulting from repeated service failures and breakdowns.” 

“The strike goes ahead after talks with the company broke down without agreement,” the RMT said in a statement.

They claim that staff have had to bear the brunt of public anger following service problems at St Pancras during peak holiday season which has seen thousands of passengers “dumped on the cramped concourse”.

Despite repeatedly demanding improved contracts, “nothing tangible” has come from Eurostar, the RMT said.

RMT has also confirmed that it is escalating the dispute and has begun balloting train managers over the same issues. 

“Workers at the French end of the Eurostar operation have also registered their disgust at the appalling conditions and have taken action in an attempt to force the company to act,” said the RMT.

‎RMT General Secretary, Mick Cash said: “The conditions at St Pancras have been simply appalling in recent weeks with dangerous levels of overcrowding on the concourse as services plunge into meltdown on the cusp of the busiest part of the year. 

“RMT will not tolerate a position where our members are left to pick up the pieces due to corporate failures.

“RMT is escalating this dispute with a ballot of train managers that is now underway and it is now time for Eurostar to get their heads out of the sand, recognise the seriousness of the current situation and come forward with proposals that address the issues our members have been raising with them.”

A Eurostar spokesman told Express.co.uk: “We are disappointed to hear that the RMT plans to continue with strike action on Saturday as we were keen to find a joint resolution.

 “Our plan is to run a normal service so that all passengers booked to travel with Eurostar will be able to do so.”

Last week it was revealed that Paris Gare du Nord’s Eurostar terminal in France is due to be redeveloped in order to address “the challenges of reinforced border controls due to Brexit,” and it could lead to travellers being delayed. 

Currently the Treaty of le Touquet is in place which means passport checks for both France and the UK take place as passengers board the train. Consequently, there is no passport check on arrival and travellers can walk straight out of the station.

However, when the UK leaves the EU, passengers could face additional checks and queues on arrival.

French rail company SNCF state online that Gare du Nord will be tripled in size by 2023 in time for the Olympics in Paris. SNCF says the station will rival St Pancras railway station in London. 

Other additions include a nursery, a large co-working space, a 1km trail on the roof and green spaces. Security will also be improved.

It has prompted calls for an investigation into the popular attraction.

Some 812 of the 2,293 specimens died at the Sea Life center in Great Yarmouth between 2015 and 2016, Freedom of Information (FOI) figures obtained by the BBC reveal. A similar proportion died at the Scarborough Sea Life center, although an “error” was later blamed for inflating that figure by around a third.

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is now considering withdrawing its sponsorship deal with Sea Life, which has marine centers across the country. It branded the deaths “particularly concerning.”

Biologist and TV presenter Dr Ben Garrod, an ambassador for the MCS, said he was “shocked.” He stated: “You wouldn’t go into a hospital and expect a one-in-three chance of dying. You wouldn’t expect that in a zoo. I don’t think it is acceptable.”

Merlin Entertainments, the parent company of Sea Life, responded to the figures by saying it did everything it could to minimize the deaths. It attributed the staggering figures to the “naturally high mortality of jellyfish.” It added that some losses may have been caused by a “technically complex” water problem.

There are 12 Sea Life centers in Britain. The Great Yarmouth and Hunstanton in Norfolk, as well as London, Manchester, Scarborough, Weymouth, Birmingham and Blackpool responded to the FOI request by the BBC. Brighton failed to comply. Overall, 4,500 creatures of various species died at eight Sea Life centers in England in a single year from 2015 to 2016.

The species that died included 13 sharks and rays, and two undulate rays, which are endangered and appear on the “red” list set out by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The mortality rate of sharks and rays at Great Yarmouth stood at 21 percent – double the standard 10 percent.

The revelations have prompted the Captive Animals’ Protection to call for an investigation into the welfare of animals at Sea Life. A spokesman said: “Sea Life places the very highest priority on the welfare of the animals at its sites, which are supported by experienced animal-care teams, marine biologists and world-renowned veterinary consultants. Sea Life has a strong track record in animal husbandry and complies with all the laws and regulations under the Zoo Licensing Act.”

The Sunday Brunch presenter dressed as Buzz Lightyear as he danced to You’ve Got A Friend In Me from Toy Story for Movie Week while partner Karen Clifton took on the role of Jessie. 

While many at home were quick to praise his moves, others were furious that he was not dressed as Woody from the popular Pixar film. 

Taking to to voice their outrage, one viewer tweeted: “All pretty random movies they’re doing. And Simon should of been Woody, not that shocking Buzz Lightyear #Strictly.”

While another added: “WHY WAS SIMON DRESSED AS BUZZ AND NOT WOODY!!!! #Strictly #mayhavehadgin.”

“Why did they dress Simon (badly) as Buzz, rather than Woody? #Strictly,” a third asked.

Someone else continued: “Why didn’t Simon Rimmer just dress as Woody? Creepy wearing Buzz #Strictly.”

However, some viewers were quick to point out that Woody actually fell for Bo Peep while Buzz Lightyear grew close to Jessie in Toy Story 3. 

“For anyone who commented saying Simon Rimmer should have been Woody your wrong! Woody & Bo Peep were a thing and Buzz & Jessie we’re a thing,” one fan noted. 

A second confirmed: “People are complaining about #Strictly buzz and Jessie dancing and not Woody and Jessie, guessing they have never seen Toy Story 3.”

In a special episode, which highlighted some of the issues facing modern day prisons, Aaron (played by Danny Miller) came face to face with homophobic thug Jason once again.

Jason and his cronies pushed Aaron into an empty cell and began to taunt him.

Holding him down, Jason told Aaron that he was lying in the same bed where his own father had committed suicide.

Later on in the programme, unable to tell anyone what had happened, Aaron turned to drugs.

Before the soap started, ITV warned that there were scenes of violence ahead that some viewers might find upsetting.

But some of those watching at home were so deeply affected by the hard-hitting storyline, they switched the show off before the first advertisement break.

One social media user said: “Sorry #Emmerdale I love you but I had to switch off. The things he was saying to Aaron were too much for me.”

“#Emmerdale? What exactly does the watershed cover? Don’t need this on my Monday night. Now watching The One Show,” another complained.

A third tweeted: “#emmerdale Cannot watch this. Shocking and wrong that it is on at 7pm.”

While a fourth said: “This is too violent for 7pm #Emmerdale @emmerdale.”

Emmerdale continues tomorrow night at 7pm on ITV.

If it is not identified and treated quickly, sepsis can lead to organ failure and death and leaves thousands of survivors with life-changing disabilities.

York Health Economics Consortium suggests 260,000 Britons develop the condition every year – 110,000 more people than previously believed.

The condition results in 44,000 deaths every year in the UK, but could be as high as 65,000.

Experts said treatment could save more than 14,000 lives annually. The condition is treated with antibiotics.

New data revealed by the UK Sepsis Trust has revealed sepsis could cost the UK economy more as much as £15.6 billion every year, rather than the £2.5 billion it had previously estimated.

The charity said deaths and long-term complications due to delayed diagnosis and treatment in sepsis patients is costing billions every year. 

Previous estimates suggested that the cost to the economy was in the region of £2.5 billion, but the latest analysis indicates the problem is far worse, both in terms of the economic burden and the number of people affected.

Dr Ron Daniels BEM, chief executive of the UK Sepsis Trust said: “We’ve long been aware that sepsis causes thousands of unnecessary deaths every year and presents an unmanageable economic burden.

“A crippling paucity of data has thus far confined us to conservative estimates, but the figures reported in YHEC’s study are a shocking new indication of the gravity and sheer scale of the problem.

WHAT IS SEPSIS?

“It’s sobering to learn that the issue is so much greater than previously estimated.

“Equally sobering, though, is the dearth of reliable data recorded for a condition that carries such an overwhelming costs in human and economic terms.

“It’s imperative that the government acts decisively to develop a national ‘sepsis registry’ and introduces coding practices for sepsis in all NHS trusts.

“A precise understanding of how the NHS handles sepsis is urgently required to prevent avoidable deaths, improve outcomes for survivors and save billions of pounds for the UK as a whole.”

The trust reported 260,000 annual cases of sepsis – drawn directly from government data – shows incidence of the condition in the UK to be much higher than previous estimates of 150,000.

Despite the economic and human costs associated with sepsis there is very little data on incidence, care pathways and costs in the UK, the trust has argued. 

The condition hit the headlines following the death of 12-month-old William Mead in December 2014.

NHS doctors repeatedly failed to spot he had sepsis, while 111 also mishandled a call from his mother Melissa.

Another child, three-year-old Sam Morrish, from Devon, died from sepsis in December 2010.

He was the victim of a catalogue of NHS errors, including how his call was handled by NHS Direct, now replaced by the 111 service.

Call-handlers at NHS Direct failed to categorise Sam’s mother’s call as urgent, despite indications that his vomit contained blood.
