People aged 50-plus who never married or entered into a civil partnership, or live with a partner, rose from 377,180 in 2002 to almost 724,493 in 2015, show latest figures from the Office for National Statistics.

And traumatic memories of a bitter parental split back in the 1970s has led to this new generation of bachelors and spinsters.

Professor Ann Buchanan, from the department of social policy at the University of Oxford, said the rise in single people could be attributed to a rise in the divorce rate in the early 1970s triggered by the 1969 Divorce Reform Act.

The divorce rate rose from 5.9 per 1,000 couples in 1971 to 9.5 a year later, peaking in 1994 at 14.2.

Prof Buchanan, a former social worker, said: “Bad experiences with divorce would certainly mean they were less likely to commit themselves.

“My own research has shown that otherwise high-achieving young adults carried a strong sense of “sadness” about their parents’ divorces many years after they had taken place.”

Debora Price, a professor of social gerontology at Manchester University, agreed that this spate of 1970s divorces “almost certainly had an effect”.

She said: “For the first time, lots of children were growing up in households where their parents had divorced.

“There is some suggestion that those children then did not see marriage as something they wanted to achieve.”

She said some children would have been so traumatised by living through difficult divorces that it would have put them off marriage for life.

However, others would have grown up with the idea that marriage was pointless because their parents had split so easily, she added.

While the overall number of people who have never married or been in a civil partnership has increased slightly from 20,092,604 in 2002 to 22,678,798 in 2015, the increase has been significant for those in their late forties, fifties and sixties.

The shift is particularly striking among women. 

The number in their early fifties who have never married has increased by 150 per cent in 13 years, from 74,941 in 2002 to 185,694 in 2015.

Among men the number increased from 135,216 to 228,078 – a jump of 70 per cent.

Meanwhile plunging divorce rates suggest that those who do marry are now less likely to split.

Analysis published in December suggested that divorce fell to its lowest level for 40 years in 2014.

Growing numbers of bachelors and spinsters could put extra pressure on voluntary and health services after research found unmarried people are more likely to have health problems and suffer from loneliness.

The girls were 67 per cent more likely to display traits like poor social skills and repetitive behaviours.

And when grans sparked up this increased the risk of her grandchildren having a diagnosed autism spectrum disorder – ASD – by more than 53 per cent.

The Bristol University study suggested if a female was exposed to cigarette smoke in the womb, it could affect the developing eggs, causing changes that may eventually affect the development of her own children.

The research were based on 14,500 participants in the Children of the 90s study, an ongoing, long-term study of the effects of maternal and paternal grandmother’s smoking in pregnancy on the development of their grandchildren.

Further research is planned to find out what these molecular changes might be, and to see whether the same associations are present in other groups of people.

Professor Jean Golding said: “We already know that protecting a baby from tobacco smoke is one of the best things a woman can do to give her child a healthy start in life.

“Now we’ve found that not smoking during pregnancy could also give their future grandchildren a better start too.

“We have started studying the next generation of participants (Children of the Children of the 90s), so eventually we will be able to see if the effect carries down from the great-grandparents to their great-grandchildren too.”

Dr Dheeraj Rai added: “We still do not know why many children develop autism and behaviours linked to it.

“The associations we observe raise intriguing issues on possible transgenerational influences in autism.

“Future research will help understand the meaning and mechanisms behind these findings.”

Unlike the team’s study of autistic traits, which was based on over 7,000 participants, the 177 diagnosed with ASD were too few to analyse grandsons and granddaughters separately for the research.

The incidence of autism spectrum disorders has increased in recent years, and while some of this increase is because of improved diagnosis, changes in environment or lifestyle are also likely to play a role.

The researchers said many different factors, including genetic variation, are believed to affect an individual’s chances of developing ASD.

Smoking can damage the DNA of mitochondria

Past studies of maternal smoking in pregnancy and ASD in children have been inconclusive.

Professor Marcus Pembrey added: “In terms of mechanisms, there are two broad possibilities. 

“There is DNA damage that is transmitted to the grandchildren or there is some adaptive response to the smoking that leaves the grandchild more vulnerable to ASD.

“We have no explanation for the sex difference, although we have previously found that grand-maternal smoking is associated with different growth patterns in grandsons and granddaughters.

“More specifically, we know smoking can damage the DNA of mitochondria – the numerous “power-packs” contained in every cell, and mitochondria are only transmitted to the next generation via the mother’s egg.

Research suggests workplace exposure to electromagentic fields is linked to a higher risk of ALS

Experts noted an association between exposure to extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

ALS causes weakness and wasting in the limbs and people only tend to live for two to five years from first experiencing symptoms.

More than 5,000 people in the UK are living with motor neurone disease (MND).

In the new study, Professor Roel Vermeulen, from Utrecht University in the Netherlands, and colleagues, examined data for 58,279 men and 6,573 women aged 55 to 69, who were followed for 17 years.

Some 76 men and 60 women died of ALS during the study.

The research found that high levels of electromagnetic field exposure were largely confined to the men, and depended on their jobs.

Those whose jobs had exposed them to high levels of extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields were more than twice as likely to develop ALS as those who had never been exposed through their work, the study suggested.

Furthermore, those in the top 30% of cumulative exposure (duration multiplied by intensity) were nearly twice as likely to develop the disease.

The researchers, writing in the journal Occupational & Environmental Medicine, stressed the study was observational.

But Prof Vermeulen said: “Those whose jobs had exposed them to high levels of extremely low-frequency magnetic fields were more than twice as likely to develop ALS as those who had always been exposed to only background levels through their work.

“Jobs with relatively higher extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields levels are for example electric line installer, repairers and cable jointer, welders, sewing-machine operators and aircraft pilots.

“These are essentially jobs where workers are placed in close proximity to appliances that use a lot of electricity.”

He said the effect of the environment “appears substantial”, adding: “The present study adds evidence to previous studies that have suggested that extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields is related to ALS risk.”

Professor Neil Pearce, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: “Several previous studies have found that electrical workers are at increased risk of ALS.

“We don’t know why the risk is higher, but the two most likely explanations involve either electrical shocks, or ongoing exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields.

“This study has much better information on exposure to magnetic fields than previous studies. It shows that the increased risk of ALS in electrical workers is most likely due to magnetic field exposure, rather than to electrical shocks.”

Professor Christian Holscher, from Lancaster University, said the results should be interpreted with caution, adding, “the effect of extremely low frequency magnetic fields on ALS development is not clear.

“The trend is only just statistically significant, and with such low numbers, it may well be a false positive.”

Paul Pharoah, professor of cancer epidemiology at the University of Cambridge, added: “An association between extremely low frequency magnetic fields and ALS is far from proven by these data.”

Brian Dickie, director of research development at the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) said: “The results suggest that exposure to high levels of extremely low frequency magnetic fields is associated with an increased risk of developing MND.

“However, this only becomes apparent when relatively large numbers of people are studied, indicating that any such effect is a very subtle one. It does not mean that exposure causes MND.

“MND is a devastating and complex disease and it is likely that a wide range of triggers, from environmental to genetic, will cause an individual to get the condition.”
