Evidence is growing that calorie-packed sweeteners – such as high fructose syrups found in fizzy drinks, biscuits and cakes – have major roles in disease.Public health campaigns are now recommending strict limits to the consumption of these “free sugars.” Part of the problem is that guidelines target sugar only for its calories rather than as a potential cause of illness, says US science writer Gary Taubes who specialises in diet and nutrition. In an essay published in The BMJ he says the idea sugar could be behind the global obesity and diabetes epidemics should be considered seriously again. Mr Taubes, co-founder of the Nutrition Science Initiative in San Diego, said it has potential deleterious effects on the body that go beyond just high numbers of calories. He said a 15-fold increase in death rates from diabetes in some US cities since the Civil War coincided with the growth of the sweets, chocolate and ice cream industries in the 1840s and the soft drink industries in the 1880s. In the midst of such a huge public health crisis, Mr Taubes says: “We must do more to discourage consumption while we improve our understanding of sugar’s role.” Doctors have long suspected sugar is not simply a source of excess calories but a fundamental cause of obesity and type 2 diabetes, he says. Until recently, fat consumption and total energy balance have dominated the debate about obesity and the nature of a healthy diet. Official estimates are that one in 11 people in the United States has diabetes; one in 16 in the UK.Latest estimates suggest that obesity and diabetes may now cost the US healthcare system as much as $ 1bn (£740m; Euro 850m) a day. In 2016, World Health Organization (WHO) director general Margaret Chan described the twin epidemics of obesity and diabetes worldwide as a “slow-motion disaster.” She suggested the likelihood of preventing the current “bad situation” from getting “much worse” was “virtually zero.”In spite of all our best efforts these epidemics have gone unchecked, says Mr Taubes. A simple explanation could be that our understanding of the cause of the disease is flawed – perhaps fundamentally so. He said: “The US National Institutes of Health (crt Institutes) spent at least $ 750 million testing the hypothesis dietary fat consumption raises serum cholesterol and causes chronic disease. “But it did not see the need to invest similar sums to answer the simple question, would we live longer and be healthier if we were given dietary advice to avoid sugar?” The evidence that sugar has harmful qualities independent of its calories is still ambiguous. Mr Taubes said: “If it is true, though, it changes how we must communicate the dangers of sugar consumption.”Setting an upper limit to the amount of sugar that should be consumed in a healthy diet is a good start. “But we don’t know if the level recommended is safe for everyone. “It could be that for people who have obesity or diabetes, or both, even a little is too much.”And the ubiquity of sugar rich products may make it difficult for many people to maintain a healthy level of sugar consumption. “Given the scale of the obesity and diabetes epidemics “then a concerted programme of research to establish reliable knowledge on this subject should be among our highest priorities,” he concludes. “Meanwhile, we can acknowledge the uncertainties while still recommending strongly against consumption.” Mr Taubes is the author of The Case Against Sugar. His previous books include the The Diet Delusion and Why We Get Fat. Disney World and Disneyland have built their reputation on promising to make families smile. With colourful Disney characters, themed rides and attractions, the parks are considered some of the happiest places on earth according to guests. Customer care is at the heart of Disney staff training. In fact the staff are known as ‘cast members’ are ordered not to be negative in front of guests. There are strict rules preventing anyone who works there from displaying any kind of negativity while visitors are around. But no matter the quality of the customer care rude guests are unavoidable. One ex-employee who took to the social media platform Reddit claimed that some cast members have devised secret codes to vent their frustration at customers they consider divas. If you hear the words, “Have a magical Disney day,” that might mean anything but. The former Disney staffer claimed this phrase is code for “f*** you”. Another ex-employee on Reddit said “I worked for Disney’s Ad Agency for three years and we had some cast members tell us this is what it meant.” Former Disney employee Charles Harris told Quora: “Disney does not have customers, they have guests and the cast members are trained to never refer “However in one high profile location where shoplifting was a bit more prevalent, the cast members would use the term ‘customer’ when speaking to another cast member if they felt someone was up to something and to not alert other guests who might overhear that conversation.” So next time listen out for the word “customer” which may mean a Disney staff members have spotted a ‘guest’ doing something suspicious. Walt Disney opened Disneyland, his first theme park, in 1955. The 1953 artefact became the most lucrative Disneyland map when it went under the hammer in Los Angeles. It had been hidden away for more than 60 years after the cartoonist gave it to a production assistant named Grenade Curran. Van Eaton Galleries co-owner Mike Eaton said: “After some pretty exciting bidding the map sold for $ 708,000, making it the most expensive Disneyland map ever sold. “We are beyond thrilled that the map will continue to be appreciated and cherished just like it has been for all these years.” While current NHL players can’t play in the upcoming Olympics, recently retired ones will be eligible. That thought has Team Canada head coach Willie Desjardins excited about the prospects of having hockey greats Shane Doan and Jarome Iginla in the fold. Desjardins says Doan is on the team’s radar right now. He also pointed to Iginla, whose NHL aspirations might shift to an Olympic focus if things don’t work out with the Los Angeles Kings. “Those guys are two very special hockey players, what they’ve done in the NHL and in hockey is exceptional,” he said. “They’re both great leaders.” Both Doan and Iginla are from the 1995 hockey class. Earlier this week Doan announced his retirement after a 21-year career in the NHL. The Alberta native is the Arizona Coyotes’ leader in games played, goals, assists, points, power-play goals and game-winning markers. He was drafted seventh overall by the Winnipeg Jets in 1995, playing one season in the Manitoba capital before the team shuffled off to the desert. Meanwhile, Iginla is set to enter another NHL season after being traded late last season by Colorado to L.A. He spent his first 15 years of his career in Calgary and was a two-time 50 goal scorer. Last season in Colorado, however, Iginla had eight goals and 18 points in 61 games. Desjardins says while the wealth of experience of both players bring can be a great asset to the team, the only way he would consider adding them to the roster is if both sides felt they could still contribute in a meaningful way on and off the ice. “For those guys, they just want to play if they can make a difference,” he said. “That’s how they’ve been built their whole life.” Desjardins and the coaching staff recently returned from Russia where Team Canada played six games over 12 days, winning four of those matches. More than anything it was a chance to get a first look at a number of roster hopefuls hoping to make the team. “The European game is a different game. I couldn’t believe the speed in that game when I was over in Sochi. It was so fast,” Desjardins says. With that in mind, Desjardins says they’ll be constructing a team that can play 60 minutes of hockey at that same high-intensity speed. Dave King, Team Canada assistant coach and longtime bench boss in international hockey, says management is in talks with a lengthy list of players like Doan and Iginla about joining the team. And while those conversations are ongoing, King says the biggest factor in deciding whether Doan and Iginla will be considered is if the veterans intend on continuing to play at a high level elsewhere. “For ex-players like Doan, guys like that, they have to have a plan to play,” says the former NHL coach. “If they’re going to play somewhere maybe in Europe and stay active then we have a lot of interest because they’re good players. But it’s really going to be important for these NHL players that have some interest that they have a plan to play.” King, much like Desjardins, was impressed by the speed of the games the team participated in last month. He’s no stranger to Russian and European hockey, having spent years coaching across the ocean. King was also Canada’s coach at the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Olympics, all teams void of NHL players. If Doan, Iginla or anyone else with lengthy and illustrious NHL careers think they can rest on their names to make the team, they need to think again. “It’s very difficult to think they can just come in and play in a couple tournaments and then show up [at] the Olympics and play at a high level. That won’t work because the competition is very, very good.” The men’s national team is playing in the Karjala Cup in Finland from Nov. 8-12. Team Canada then has two more tournaments in mid-December to evaluate another group of players. And there’s a chance Doan and Iginla might just be wearing the red and white at one of those events if Desjardins and King have it their way. “They’ve put so much into our game and when you have people who do that you certainly take the time and talk and see where they’re at,” Desjardins said. Jay Wilde inherited his father’s beef farm in Derbyshire when he died in 2011, but after being a vegetarian for 25 years the farmer’s conscience forced him to discontinue the family tradition. As Jay explained his plans for a vegan future over breakfast with presenter Adam Henson, viewers instantly expressed their confusion at his plate of eggs on Twitter. One person tweeted: “Converting the farm into a vegan kitchen……but he’s vegetarian and sat eating eggs. Not getting this. #Countryfile #vegan,” while another said: “Why is this ‘vegan’ farmer eating eggs?! #Countryfile #Vegan.” “#countryfile You just murdered that poor egg you vegan you,” one BBC viewer joked. Some fans even criticised the programme for intentionally ‘misleading’ viewers, as one posted: “Love that #countryfile juxtaposed a bit about the vegan society with a shot of an egg frying??” And another questioned whether Jay fully understood what being a vegan meant, saying: “The vegan convert farmer on Countryfile is having eggs for breakfast. Guess he didn’t read all the leaflet then!” As fans of the show continued to share their bewilderment, the official account for Countryfile stepped in to clarify the mess. “He’s vegetarian. He’s turning the farm over to farm organic vegetables to sell on the vegan market,” the BBC programme tweeted, before continuing to retweet another viewer with: “The commentary was ‘over a vegetarian breakfast’.” The 59-year-old farmer decided to give away his cows – worth £50,000 – to an animal sanctuary in Norfolk after an enlightening visit from a member of the Vegan Society. But while Jay’s plans for Bradley Nook Farm will now include a vegan cookery school and vegan organic produce farming, he has only ever been a vegetarian himself. Many fans also praised the progressive farmer for his courage, as one tweeted: “I am so delighted for that brave, compassionate man who gave his herd to a sanctuary to run a vegan kitchen/cookery school #countryfile” Another person agreed with the choice but expressed their dislike for the series’ presenter and fellow farmer Adam. “Wonderful to see a farmer like Jay. Forward thinking and considerate to the animals he’d cared for. Adam I dislike you #Countryfile,” they tweeted. Countryfile continues next Sunday at 7pm on BBC One.

Footballers have better eyesight than the average adult, research finds
They have “substantially better” vision than the general public, according to the first-ever comprehensive scientific assessment of Premier League players.
The findings show they are much faster at changing their gaze between objects that are close and a long way off, an ability known as ‘near-far quickness’.
They also have sharper vision and are more able to pick up objects against a confused background.
Defenders have the best ‘near-far quickness’, also known as ‘accommodative vergence’ – possibly because it helps them adapt to the offside trap.
Interestingly, the phenomenon also applied to amateur players – but not the general public.
In the first study of its kind, scientists recruited 49 first team and Under 21 footballers from an unnamed Premier League club as well as 31 intermediate male university players.
Visual function of competitive soccer players is superior to non-athletic adults
They examined visual functions considered critical to sport performance in players of different skill levels and playing positions using the Nike SPARQ Sensory Station.
This is an interactive touch screen device that evaluates athletes on visual skills such as depth perception, eye-hand coordination and reaction time.
The participants stood 16 feet from the sensory station while they responded to tasks using an iPod.

The first comprehensive scientific assessment of players found they had ‘substantially better’ sight
The assessments included visual clarity (ability to see detail at a given distance), contrast sensitivity (ability to detect an object against a background), near-far quickness (ability to change eye gaze and attention between near and far distances), target capture and perception.
The researchers then compared these data to those from a study of 230 healthy non athletic men and women using the same apparatus.
The footballers, both professional and amateur, were “significantly better” on all measures except target capture and perception.
Professor Simon Bennett, of the Research Institute of Sport and Exercise Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University, said: “There was no difference between elite and intermediate players for all measures.”
But both the Premier League and university players had better visual sharpness compared to the control group.
Professor Bennett said: “Visual function of competitive soccer players is superior to non-athletic adults, but does not differentiate the elite and intermediate player.
“However, defensive players do exhibit faster accommodative vergence than offensive players.
“We suspect that this particular visual function is advantageous for defenders given the greater demand to continually shift gaze between players located at near and far locations.”
He added: “This contrasts with offensive players who benefit from looking at the best possible option to increase the chances of scoring (i.e.,pass, dribble, shoot), and thus do not need to make as many gaze changes between near and far locations.”

Defenders were found to have the best ‘near-far quickness’
His study reported in Science and Medicine in Football and published by Taylor & Francis said the visual abilities of competitive footballers are substantially better than those of healthy non athletes.
It is the first comprehensive assessment of visual function in Premier League footballers.
Average visual clarity, contrast sensitivity, and near-far quickness of competitive footballers, both elite and intermediate, were significantly better than those of non athletes.
But the results showed there was no difference in visual function between the elite and intermediate players.
The researchers said it was interesting defensive players displayed faster near-far quickness than offensive players.
They said this visual function may be particularly helpful to defenders who are responsible for ensuring the ‘offside trap’ is not broken.
In a typical situation they have to quickly switch their attention, and therefore eye gaze, between several opponents in near and far locations.
Professor Bennett said the study highlights the importance of good vision in football and the potential for gaining a competitive edge through vision support and training.
But he said there is a need the for further investigation to consider the specific visual demands of player position and the role for regular eye examinations.
Added Professor Bennett: “While these findings add to the growing evidence that a good level of vision could be important in dynamic invasion sports, future studies need to determine the precise nature of the relationship with on-field performance.”

He said it has been recommended athletes have regular visual function assessment and undertake vision training.
The training of visual skills is becoming more and more important in many sports.
Research has shown 85 percent of the information footballers get is through their eyes.
Experts say vision skills can provide a competitive advantage – and can be the difference between a good and a great player.
Barcelona legends Xavi and Andres Iniesta have been hailed as examples of footballers who see things others don’t – an ability that helps physical weaker players excel against bigger, stronger built opponents.
Professor Bennett added: “There is growing evidence aspects of both general visual function and specific visual processing abilities can be improved through training.”

Jimmy Fallon was pulling out his own hair in the wake of his widely-maligned Tonight Show interview with Donald Trump, in which he playfully ran his hands through the then-candidate’s mane. And eight months later, the backlash continues to haunt him.
“I’m a people pleaser,” he tells the New York Times, addressing the kerfuffle for the first time. “If there’s one bad thing on Twitter about me, it will make me upset. So, after this happened, I was devastated. I didn’t mean anything by it. I was just trying to have fun.”
Fallon maintains that the hair gesture was not meant to “humanize” Trump, but rather “minimize” him. “I didn’t think that would be a compliment.”
Regardless, he says viewers “have a right to be mad. If I let anyone down, it hurt my feelings that they didn’t like it. I got it.”
In the months that followed the September interview, Fallon has seen his overall audience steadily decline; he now regularly trails his CBS rival Stephen Colbert. Still, Fallon stresses that he has no plans to alter his apolitical brand of comedy. “I don’t want to be bullied into not being me, and not doing what I think is funny,” he says. “Just because some people bash me on Twitter, it’s not going to change my humor or my show. It’s not The Jimmy Fallon Show. It’s The Tonight Show.”

We are just as good at detecting odours as our four legged friends
It has long been thought humans sense of smell was not as good as man’s best friends but in fact we can differentiate between up to a trillion odours.
The myth began during the Victorian era and has persisted – until now.
In fact we are just as good at detecting odours as our four legged friends – just that we prefer the nose of a good wine while they prefer sniffing lamp posts.
Neuroscientist associate professor John McGann at Rutgers University – New Brunswick said: “For so long people failed to stop and question this claim, even people who study the sense of smell for a living.
“The fact is the sense of smell is just as good in humans as in other mammals, like rodents and dogs.
“Prof McGann reviewed existing research, data and writings that helped create the long-held misconception that human sense of smell was inferior because of the size of the olfactory bulb.
The academic, who studies how the brain understands sensory stimuli using information gleaned from prior experience, said humans can discriminate maybe one trillion different odours.

We prefer the nose of a good wine while they prefer sniffing lamp posts
The fact is the sense of smell is just as good in humans as in other mammals, like rodents and dogs
This is far more, than the claim by “folk wisdom and poorly sourced introductory psychology textbooks” that insist humans could only detect about 10,000 different odours.
He blamed Paul Broca, a 19th century French brain surgeon and anthropologist as the culprit for the falsehood that humans have an impoverished olfactory system.
This assertion even influenced Sigmund Freud to insist that this deficiency made humans susceptible to mental illness.
Prof McGann said : “It has been a long cultural belief that in order to be a reasonable or rational person you could not be dominated by a sense of smell.”Smell was linked to earthly animalistic tendencies.”

The brain understands sensory stimuli using information gleaned from prior experience
He explained the truth about smell is that the human olfactory bulb, which sends signals to other areas of a very powerful human brain to help identify scents, is quite large and similar in the number of neurons to other mammals.
The olfactory receptor neurons in the nose work by making physical contact with the molecules composing the odour, and they send this information back to that region of the brain.
He said: “We can detect and discriminate an extraordinary range of odours; we are more sensitive than rodents and dogs for some odours; we are capable of tracking odour trails; and our behavioural and affective states are influenced by our sense of smell.”
In 1879 Broca claimed the smaller volume of the olfactory area compared to the rest of the brain meant that humans had free will and didn’t have to rely on smell to survive and stay alive like dogs and other mammals.
In reality Prof McGann said there was no support for the notion that a larger olfactory bulb increases sense of smell based solely on size and insists that the human sense of smell is just as good and that of animals.
He added: “Dogs may be better than humans at discriminating the urines on a fire hydrant and humans may be better than dogs at discriminating the odours of fine wine, but few such comparisons have actual experimental support.”
Genetic studies on rats and mice also supported the myth as they have about 1,000 different kinds of receptors that are activated by odours compared to humans who only have about 400.
Prof McGann said: “I think it has been too easy to get caught up in numbers.”We’ve created a confirmation bias by working off a held belief that humans have a poor sense of smell because of these lower numbers of receptors, which in reality is still an awful lot.”
He said the problem with this continuing myth was that smell is much more important than we think as subconsciously it strongly influences human behaviour, elicits memories and emotions, and shapes perceptions.
Yet the sense declines with age but doctors should be concerned when patients complain of losing it.
He concluded: “Some research suggests that losing the sense of smell may be the start of memory problems and diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
“One hope is that the medical world will begin to understand the importance of smell and that losing it is a big deal.”
The study was published in the journal Science.
Six in ten Britons admitted to having a relationship with a colleague, of which over a third (35 per cent) were reported to have ended badly.
The research from employment law experts Slater and Gordon showed that of the 2,000 subjects questioned, 70 per cent said that their relationship had had a negative impact on their career, and 17 per cent said it had cost them their job.
Harriet Bowtell, employment lawyer at Slater and Gordon, said: “It is not surprising that relationships in the workplace are common.
“However, it is notable that such a large proportion of people said that the relationship had a negative impact on their career.
“This is especially so for the more junior employee in the relationship, who is often a woman.
“Our research shows that the woman can be treated worse than the man particularly when a relationship ends badly, including being passed over for promotion, side-lined or even forced out of her job.”
