WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Handmaid’s Tale season two, episode 10, titled The Last Ceremony.

The Handmaid’s Tale season two is nearing to the end and with just a handful of episodes left writer and producer Yahlin Chang has spoken about the last scenes of the series.

In The Last Ceremony, June, also known as Offred (played by Elizabeth Moss) was put on trial after pretending she was going into labour and was then brutally raped by her Commander (Joseph Fiennes) and his wife Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski).

Adding salt to the wound, June was finally reunited with her daughter Hannah (Jordana Blake), but was shocked to discover that she was nothing like the girl she knew.

June later found out Nick Blaine (Max Minghella), one of the few people she can trust, was arrested by Gilean authorities.

Now, June is alone and pregnant, but with more episodes still to come is there any hope things could get better for her?

Yahlin promised the three remaining episodes would contain “great moments of triumph and uplift”, but warned there would be some intense scenes.

The writer and producer also defended the show after some criticised it for being too dark and violent.

“It’s a marathon, not a sprint,” she told Vanity Fair. “Yes, you’ll have a dark episode — but we’re telling a story. It’s like a long novel with lots of chapters.

“You don’t get those huge feelings of triumph and uplift if you don’t have some sort of real honest, how-bad-the-world-gets-to-you moments.”

She went on to say that there were three major messages she hoped viewers would take from this series of The Handmaid’s Tale, particularly episode 10.

“It’s really wrong to rip children away from their mothers, and it’s really wrong to rape people,” she stated.

“With this particular episode, I think, those are two messages I would like to hammer home.”

The producer later added: “That love survives is an amazing thing… In a goofy way, it’s like love is the most powerful force in the universe, and love survives.

“That’s an incredible message. I’m going to add that as my third thing I want people to take away. It’s wrong to rape, wrong to rip kids from their mothers, and that love survives.”

Season two of The Handmaid’s Tale has a total of 13 episodes and is longer than the first series, which only had ten.

The Golden Globe winning drama will air its finale episode on July 11 on US streaming service Hulu and four weeks later in the UK.

Set in New England the series adapted from the Margaret Atwood’s book by the same name follows the journey of the handmaid Offred.

The programme explores themes of women in subjugation in a patriarchal society and their attempt to gain independence.

The Handmaid’s Tale season two airs on Hulu in the US and on Channel 4 in the UK.

Celebrity Big Brother 2017: Amelia Lily plays with Marissa Jade's BREASTS – 'Great t**s' https://briefnews.eu/celebrity-big-brother-2017-amelia-lily-plays-with-marissa-jades-breasts-great-ts/ https://briefnews.eu/celebrity-big-brother-2017-amelia-lily-plays-with-marissa-jades-breasts-great-ts/#respond Sat, 05 Aug 2017 19:33:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/celebrity-big-brother-2017-amelia-lily-plays-with-marissa-jades-breasts-great-ts/

The X Factor singer Amelia, 22, jumped at the chance to fondle Marissa’s breasts, in scenes set to air on Celebrity Big Brother tonight, to prove they are real.

Taking Amelia’s hand and placing it firmly on her bosom, Marissa quipped: “If I was really fake, would I be able to do that?”

Marissa then demanded Amelia to “jiggle” her chest, and the pop princess happily obliged.

“You’ve literally got the best figure ever,” Amelia enthused. “You’ve got a gorgeous a**e, good t**s.”

Keeping the praise coming, Amelia beamed: “Your figure is just unbelievable. It really just makes me love it.”

Elsewhere in tonight’s Celebrity Big Brother, Jemma Lucy, 29 and Trisha Paytas, also 29, compare their breasts in a “boob-off”.

Happily answering questions from ogle-eyed Sam Thompson, Paul Danan and Jordan Davies, the girls divulged all about their prized assets.

However, their playful fondling came under fire from Derek Acorah, 67, despite the psychic bragging about the size of his penis earlier in the week.

“I’m not against in any way, their moment is that they feel, they haven’t got these inhibitions, and the girls of our day, they wouldn’t have gone there like that,” he told Sandi Bogle.”I know it and you know it.”

Celebrity Big Brother continues tonight at 10.35pm on Channel 5.

London holiday post-Brexit BOOM: 'Great value’ UK capital sees tourist numbers SOAR https://briefnews.eu/london-holiday-post-brexit-boom-great-value-uk-capital-sees-tourist-numbers-soar/ https://briefnews.eu/london-holiday-post-brexit-boom-great-value-uk-capital-sees-tourist-numbers-soar/#respond Thu, 20 Jul 2017 09:40:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/london-holiday-post-brexit-boom-great-value-uk-capital-sees-tourist-numbers-soar/

The city has become much more attractive to tourists, according to latest figures from ForwardKeys.

London has seen a 14 per cent spike in forward bookings for long-haul international arrivals compared to the beginning of July last year.

The primary reason for this significant increase is the weakened pound which is attracting overseas markets.

London is on average nine per cent better value this year than last.

It also comes despite a spate of terror attacks in the UK in recent months.

London now has a bigger market share of long-haul bookings than any other European city.

Between July and October London has 12 per cent, while Paris takes nine per cent and Rome seven per cent.

The Americas are the most popular source of inbound tourists, accounting for a 21 per cent increase in bookings from July 1 to October 31.

There has been a 15 per cent increase in visitors from Africa and 14 per cent from the Asia Pacific.

The only region to note a decline in tourist traffic was the Middle East, which has dropped by 20 per cent.

This has been attributed to a fall in the price of oil and the timing of Ramadan.

Olivier Jager, ForwardKeys co-founder and CEO, said: “London is great value at the moment and people are springing at the opportunity for a holiday, costing less than they might have anticipated.

“It’s also testimony to London’s appeal as a destination and excellent news for all those businesses involved in selling London and the rest of the UK as a destination.

“This is an obvious and clear demonstration of how currency fluctuations affect travel, even in the face of other significant factors.”

The ForwardKeys data was collected from the analysis of 16 million holiday bookings each day.

It showed tourists from Brazil, Russia and China are showing particular interest in London as a destination this year over the rest of Europe.

While inbound tourism to London has spiked, staycations have also noted an increase since last year.

Britons are choosing mini-breaks in the UK rather than longer holidays abroad and it’s already delivered an extra £2bn into the economy.

Grey's Anatomy's Jessica Capshaw on Arizona/Eliza's First Big Challenge, Plus: a 'Great Chance' of a Callie Return https://briefnews.eu/greys-anatomys-jessica-capshaw-on-arizonaelizas-first-big-challenge-plus-a-great-chance-of-a-callie-return/ https://briefnews.eu/greys-anatomys-jessica-capshaw-on-arizonaelizas-first-big-challenge-plus-a-great-chance-of-a-callie-return/#respond Wed, 29 Mar 2017 18:58:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/greys-anatomys-jessica-capshaw-on-arizonaelizas-first-big-challenge-plus-a-great-chance-of-a-callie-return/

As weird as it sounds, Grey’s Anatomy docs Arizona and Eliza may soon miss the bygone days when they had to keep their romance on the D.L. Now that their colleagues have begun to find out about the new couple, “they have to see what happens when they actually have a relationship — the sex and the commitment versus no commitment,” Jessica Capshaw, who plays Robbins, told TVLine earlier this month at PaleyFest. The question becomes, “What are they now?”

What’s more, there’s the little matter of… uh, very few Grey Sloan attendings can stand Arizona’s new girlfriend. But “she’s not a villain,” Capshaw is quick to note. “She’s just representing a threat to Dr. Webber, who everyone loves. So it’ll probably become a little more apparent who Eliza is in the scheme of things and what she’s about.”

Though Sara Ramirez’s recent beef with ABC would seem to suggest that we’ll never get to see how Arizona’s ex Callie reacts to her successor, Capshaw hasn’t given up hope. “I feel like nothing is impossible,” she says. “There’s a great chance that she would come back for something.”

Charles Clarke: My hell as prisoner in 'Great Escape' Stalag Luft III https://briefnews.eu/charles-clarke-my-hell-as-prisoner-in-great-escape-stalag-luft-iii/ https://briefnews.eu/charles-clarke-my-hell-as-prisoner-in-great-escape-stalag-luft-iii/#respond Sun, 19 Mar 2017 10:26:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/charles-clarke-my-hell-as-prisoner-in-great-escape-stalag-luft-iii/

Now 93, the legendary RAF figure is one of just three men still living who spent time at the infamous prisoner of war camp and the only one fit enough to make the exhausting return.

As the 73rd anniversary of an astonishing chapter in Second World War history looms on Friday, Charles’s mind is flooded by memories of terror, images of friends long gone and feelings of unimaginable joy when he finally celebrated freedom.

As a fresh-faced 17-year-old in 1941 his only ambition was to fly with the RAF to do his bit to end the war.

He signed up in Oxford and after training became a bomb aimer on Lancasters. Staring at a photograph of the seven-strong crew he reels off the names as if he’d seen them only yesterday.

“From the left there’s George Knight, the navigator, who is carrying a bag with all the maps inside. Then there’s Peter Smith, me and Jimmy Trail,” he says.

“On the front from the left are mid upper gunner Snake Glazebrook, Keith Williams, the pilot, and Bill Walch, the rear gunner. The three kneeling down perished but the four on the back row all survived.”

Charles will travel back to Stalag Luft this week to mark the 73rd anniversary of the Great Escape

The crew had bonded exceptionally well and completed 17 missions successfully. But luck ran out on the 18th mission to hammer Schweinfurt in in February 1944 when a Nazi fighter plane raked them, shattering a fuel tank and turning the plane into a flying bomb, which came down near Stuttgart.

“Flames were spreading over the wings and we knew pretty quickly we had to get out,” recalls Charles. “I got to the escape door and pulled it open. I’d done parachute training – which involved jumping once on to a bale of straw from a 6ft ladder.

“Suddenly, the Lancaster was on fire and the ground was thousands of feet below in the blackness. I was worried about getting caught in the propellers. I sat on the ledge and waited for the others to jump.

“All four of us got out in a few seconds but the other three didn’t have a chance. Luckily, I landed in deep snow on mountains somewhere.

“I got a map out and started walking towards Switzerland but it was bitterly cold and hard to walk for miles in the snow. I saw footprints and thought they were from wolves.

But they were goats and I just kept going until I reached a hut, where I tried to warm up.

“I carried on walking but was spotted by a German soldier who fired a shot in my direction and I knew the game was up.”

After interrogation he was eventually transferred to Stalag Luft III in Poland, which was built by the Germans as a PoW camp for officers. It was some 100 miles south of Berlin and deemed inescapable by Hitler’s high command.

Just days after arriving he realised a grand escape plan was under way but was kept out of the inner circle, led by Squadron Leader Roger Bushell, as he was aged just 19: “I was a boy among men,” he recalls. “The plans were well established.”

While he slept in his wooden hut others were using spoons and whatever they could lay their hands on to dig a tunnel nicknamed Harry, which ended up being 348ft long and 30ft deep. On March 24 he had no idea the Great Escape was under way but they all realised it had been rumbled when a guard fired a shot on seeing men emerging from a hole in the ground.

Only three of the 76 men who escaped managed to get back to Britain. Hitler ordered 50 of the 73 rounded up to be shot as a lesson to other PoWs.

“The morning after the escape those of us still in the camp were told to parade endlessly,” he says. “They kept counting us in the freezing cold to try to find out how many of the Allied men in the camp had escaped.

“Apart from being short of food, conditions before the escape were reasonable but the atmosphere changed when they told us 50 men had been shot.

“What they did was cold-blooded murder, against all the conventions of war. The senior officer in the camp gave an order saying there would be no more attempts to escape.”

Charles was just 19 when he was captured by the Nazis

In the 1963 film The Great Escape, Steve McQueen, playing Captain Virgil Hilts, rides his motorbike over a border fence in a vain bid to reach neutral Switzerland.

In reality that never happened, although the film correctly showed the entrance to the escape tunnel covered by a stove in a wooden hut.

Charles says: “It is a great scene but there was no chance of getting a motorbike. However, we did still manage to outwit the German guards.

“We had a makeshift radio and we learned that the Russians were coming fast through Poland. There was also another tunnel where provisions and even cartoon drawings were stored.

“We feared the worst and wanted the world to know what had gone on there. We could hear the Russian guns pounding German lines. We sensed it was only a matter of time before we were freed. The Russians were only about 20 miles away.”

Hitler had other plans though, and ordered all the Allied airmen held in the camp to be rounded up and marched into Germany, possibly to be used as pawns.

“They got hundreds of us together – Brits, Poles and Russians – in a hellish winter and ordered us to walk,” remembers Charles.

“I had a greatcoat and nothing else in temperatures of minus 30 degrees Centigrade. Some of the PoWs collapsed and died of hunger and cold on what was to become known as the Long March.

“We marched for 36 hours in blizzard conditions before we had any shelter, a barn.” The exodus through the wintry wastes of Poland lasted for a week. “When we reached Germany they shoved us into cattle trucks for four days, with just one bucket between us,’’ says Charles.

“We were worried sick about the Allied bombing and whether we would get accidentally bombed. When we eventually got to a camp the previous occupants had smashed it up, so there was no shelter. I got dysentery and passed out.

“The camp was shot up by the Allies and the prisoners were moved again, across the Elbe towards typhoid-ridden Lübeck.

“We got to a farm outside Lübeck and one day a Jeep came over with an English driver and another chap and we knew they were the advance party. All the PoWs swarmed around the jeep and hugged the two men and shook their hands.

“Men were crying and hugging each other. Our three-month Long March was over. I made it to Brussels and then flew home.”

Later this week Charles will fly to Berlin before being driven down to Poland to pay his respects at a museum built on the site of the camp at Zagan and then he will be driven along part of the route of The Long March.

He will also visit a school at Lipna that was named after Allied aircrew and which Charles opened five years ago. The trip will be even more poignant as Charles received a phone call a few days ago to reveal that wreckage from his old Lancaster had been found near Stuttgart in Germany.

“I couldn’t believe it when I got the call,” he says. “The Germans have put up a memorial at the site and have asked me to come over for a visit.

“I’m now trying to see if there are any relatives of the three men who died. I think there may be relatives of Rear Gunner William Walch. He’d got married against the wishes of his mother and I think his wife was pregnant when he was killed.

“It would be good for Bill’s family to know about the memorial.” Over the years many myths have built up around what really happened at the camp, a good many formed because of the film The Great Escape and its American heart-throb star Steve McQueen.

Soldiers in the PoW camp were afraid the Allies would accidentally bomb them

Action in the film is played out in wonderful spring sunshine but the reality was much different. At the time Poland was enduring one its hardest winters with temperatures rarely getting above zero in the middle of the day and plunging to minus 30C during the night.

Instead of basking in warm sunshine, escapees had to try to fight off frostbite. When we see McQueen try to sail over a border fence (miles away from the camp) on a motorbike while being chased by gun-toting Nazis, in reality escaping was no easy ride.

McQueen had asked for the scene to be written into the film as he was a very good motorcyclist. But former PoWs booed him when it was first shown in cinemas.

Although American airmen kept watch as the tunnel was constructed, none took part in the escape. They had been moved to a different compound a few months before it took place.

Among the 50 who were shot dead were 20 British PoWs, six Canadians, six Poles, five Australians and three South Africans.

The three successful escapers were Norwegian pilots Per Bergsland, Jens Muller and Dutchman Bram van der Stok, who were serving with three different RAF squadrons.

Bergsland and Muller eventually travelled to neutral Sweden by boat. Van der Stok travelled through France before turning up at the British consulate in Spain.

Although so many Stalag Luft III prisoners of war died, the bravery of those Allied officers lives on for Charles – and they will continue to live in our communal memory.

The Walking Dead fans flocked to social media to express their appreciation for the latest episode ‘Bury Me Here’.

It focused on Morgan (Lennie James), Carol (Melissa McBridge) and the others over at the Kingdom and was largely created to get King Ezekiel’s people in the right place ahead of the war against Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and The Saviours.

Two characters met a brutal end on the latest instalment, first was Benjamin (Logan Miller) who got murdered in an elaborate plot.

King Ezekiel’s lieutenant Richard (Karl Makinen) engineered a scheme to get Benjamin killed to kick-start the war.

He sabotaged a confrontation with the Saviours at the drop-off, by leaving out one cantaloupe.

After Benjamin was shot by Jared, Morgan confronted Richard and found out it was him who set it up.

Furious, Morgan breaks his no killing ban and ends up choking the life out of his former ally.

Elsewhere, Carol made a return and learned the truth that Daryl kept hidden from her.

Loaded with the new information, she rushed straight to Ezekiel at the Kingdom and tells him they have to fight today.

The monarch said: “Yes, we do,” the monarch confirms, “…But not today.”

The emotional and tense events left viewers rushing to praise the latest episode that has prepared many characters for war.

One happy viewer wrote: “CAROL , MORGAN , EZEKIEL AND THE REST OF THE KINGDOM ARE NOW READY FOR WAR !!!! IM HAPPY !! #TheWalkingDead #TWD.”

“I might re-watch the episode tomorrow!!!! I REALLY LIKED IT #TheWalkingDead,” exclaimed another.

A third added: “Finally a good episode of #TheWalkingDead.”
