The final weekend of the NFL regular season produced drama aplenty as the lineup for the 2018 playoffs was set – with some teams having to wait until the last second to secure their place in the knockout stages of the campaign.

LATE DRAMA AS BALTIMORE HANG ON

The main drama took place in the AFC North, as the Baltimore Ravens secured a last-gasp playoff berth with victory over the surging Cleveland Browns.

The game was a tale of two rookie quarterbacks as the Ravens, led by the dynamic Lamar Jackson, held on despite a dramatic comeback from the Browns, led by the number-one draft pick, Baker Mayfield.

Jackson ran in two touchdowns as the Ravens took control of the game, but Mayfield set a new NFL rookie season record for touchdown passes as he drove the Browns back into the game.

But a late interception halted a potential game-winning drive from Cleveland that would have sent the Ravens crashing out of the playoffs.

Cleveland’s rivals the Pittsburgh Steelers needed the Browns to defeat the Ravens for them to make it into the playoffs. And, in a bizarre twist, the Steelers players and fans were left watching the big screen in their Heinz Field stadium, desperately hoping their hated rivals would secure a come-from-behind victory.

But it was not to be, as CJ Mosley’s late interception secured a 26-24 win, locked up the divisional title for Baltimore and knocked the Steelers out of contention in the process.

COLTS HAVE LUCK ON THEIR SIDE

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck continued his undefeated record against the Tennessee Titans as he led his team to victory in the final game of Week 17 and propel his side into the playoffs.

The game was effectively a knockout match, with victory sending the winner through and eliminating the loser.

And Luck threw three touchdown passes as he led the Colts to the playoffs for the first time since 2014 with a 33-17 win.

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS MAKE IT THROUGH

The reigning Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, had to rely on the Chicago Bears doing them a favor, despite their 24-0 shutout win against the Washington Redskins.

The Eagles have had a stuttering season and lost their star quarterback Carson Wentz earlier in the campaign as they once again called upon Super Bowl-winning backup Nick Foles.

And despite Foles being knocked out of the game with a chest injury, the Eagles cruised to victory, but their place in the playoffs was assured after the Bears beat the Eagles’ rivals for the playoff spot – the Minnesota Vikings – 24-10.

Foles is in red-hot form since stepping back into the starting lineup, just as he was last season. He took them all the way to the Super Bowl title on that occasion. Can he repeat the feat this year?

THE COWBOYS ARE ON FORM

A few weeks ago, the Dallas Cowboys’ participation in the playoffs was looking uncertain, at best.

But a resurgence in the team’s form has seen them charge into the playoffs with seven wins from their last eight games.

The Cowboys completed their regular-season campaign with a late 36-35 win over the New York Giants that showed that winning has become a habit once again for ‘America’s Team’.

The fact that the Cowboys did not need to win the game, but played it like it was the Super Bowl, shows they’re in the right mood to make a real run in the playoffs this season.

They’re not Super Bowl favorites by any means, but they are dangerous outsiders heading into the Wild Card round next weekend.

'Are they sure it wasn't the Russians?' Clinton's emails were reportedly hacked by China https://briefnews.eu/are-they-sure-it-wasnt-the-russians-clintons-emails-were-reportedly-hacked-by-china/ https://briefnews.eu/are-they-sure-it-wasnt-the-russians-clintons-emails-were-reportedly-hacked-by-china/#respond Wed, 29 Aug 2018 07:40:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/are-they-sure-it-wasnt-the-russians-clintons-emails-were-reportedly-hacked-by-china/ China allegedly had unimpeded access to all of Hillary Clinton’s communications through her private server when she was the Secretary of State, after planting a malware that copied emails in real time, a new report claims.

The report by the Daily Caller alleges that a Chinese-owned entity, controlled by Beijing, embedded malignant code into the private server former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential candidate Clinton used for handling her correspondence, both personal and work-related, including that which included confidential information with up to top secret classification.

Using this code, the Chinese firm, said to be operating in Washington’s northern Virginia suburbs, had a full access to emails Clinton sent through “courtesy copies” it received in real time, the report claims, citing “sources briefed on the matter.”

According to the Daily Caller, the Intelligence Community Inspector General (ICIG) became aware of the “anomaly” in early 2015 and promptly alerted the FBI. ICIG investigator Frank Rucker and attorney Janette McMillan then repeatedly met with FBI agents to brief them on the matter, including with the notorious Peter Strzok. Strzok is a disgraced former member of FBI Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team, which has been seeking evidence of US President Donald Trump’s collusion with the Russians to no avail so far.

Strzok, known for injecting a personal anti-Trump vibe into his investigations, was once among those who led the agency’s “Midyear Exam” investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server during her tenure at the US State Department.

At a July 18 hearing at the House Judiciary Committee, Strzok claimed he did meet Rucker on several occasions, but could not recall the subject matter of their conversations.

At the time, Gohmet accused Strzok of failing to act on the intelligence he allegedly received from the ICIG investigator, that a certain “anomaly” was uncovered on Clinton’s server making “every single one except for four” out of some 30,000 emails on it being forwarded to an address that was not included on the distribution list. Gohmet stressed that the entity that received the emails was a foreign one but unrelated to Russia.

Although the name of the company that allegedly tapped into Clinton’s private server is not disclosed in the report, a former intelligence official told the Daily Caller that it was a public company, not a tech one, but widely known to be the Chinese government’s intelligence collection arm.

The potentially explosive revelation has caught attention of US President Donald Trump, who took to Twitter to tease Russiagaters.

“Are they sure it wasn’t Russia (just kidding!)? What are the odds that the FBI and DOJ are right on top of this? Actually, a very big story. Much classified information!” Trump tweeted on Tuesday.

It remains to be seen if the hacking allegations against China will be given as much spotlight as those against Russia, however. Back in July, the Mueller team claimed in the indictment that alleged Russian hackers tried to hack into Clinton’s private server “for the first time” on July 27, 2016, after “invited” by Trump who jokingly said he hopes Russia will be able to “find the 30,000 emails that are missing” from Clinton’s private server.

BAFTA 2018: Ridley Scott SWEARS at audience during live acceptance speech 'Are you bored?' https://briefnews.eu/bafta-2018-ridley-scott-swears-at-audience-during-live-acceptance-speech-are-you-bored/ https://briefnews.eu/bafta-2018-ridley-scott-swears-at-audience-during-live-acceptance-speech-are-you-bored/#respond Mon, 19 Feb 2018 07:24:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bafta-2018-ridley-scott-swears-at-audience-during-live-acceptance-speech-are-you-bored/

The English film director and producer was honoured with a fellowship for his outstanding contribution to film and television at the 71st BAFTA  Awards.

However, his acceptance speech didn’t go quite to plan when he appeared to swear at a distracted audience member.

The 80-year-old began his speech by saying: “It’s been 40-years in this business and this is the first time they’ve ever given me anything so I’m not going to go quietly.

He then went on to thank Prince William, who presented him with the trophy, and BAFTA.

During his emotional speech, he spoke about his time at school and how he was at the bottom of his class.

But as he spoke about his schooling experience an audience member seemed to draw his attention.

Turning to the individual, he barked: “Are you bored? S**t, are you alright?”

Despite his comments making the crowd giggle, he seemed aware of the mishap and turned to Prince William apologetically.

He later apologised to Prince William directly for using the word “a***” to describe one of his on-set experiences during the speech.

The film producer also used his time on stage to praise teachers for their tremendous work, adding: “It’s extraordinary what a teacher can do.

“Drawing the student out, igniting independence and encouraging them to design their own future, rather than waiting for something to happen.

“Teaching is the most important of all professions. Sort that out and social problems will get sorted out.”

Sir Ridley, who has worked in the film-making industry for 40-years, was elated to have received the prestigious award.

He follows in the footsteps of previous recipients including Steven Spielberg, Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Sean Connery and Elizabeth Taylor.

In 1995, Sir Ridley and his brother Tony received a BAFTA for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema and in 2003 he was knighted for his services to the British film industry.

The BAFTAS 2018 is available to watch on the BBC iPlayer now.

The Chase: Bradley Walsh snaps after series of disastrous errors 'Are you winding me up?' https://briefnews.eu/the-chase-bradley-walsh-snaps-after-series-of-disastrous-errors-are-you-winding-me-up/ https://briefnews.eu/the-chase-bradley-walsh-snaps-after-series-of-disastrous-errors-are-you-winding-me-up/#respond Mon, 20 Nov 2017 18:55:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-chase-bradley-walsh-snaps-after-series-of-disastrous-errors-are-you-winding-me-up/

Jenny, also known as The Vixen, failed to correctly answer a series of questions, helping contestant Allan make it back for the final chase.

Contestant Allan had only opted for £5,000, thinking Jenny would be harder to beat.

However, one particular question left Bradley in a jovial rage.

The question read: “The Olympic symbol for what equestrian sport features a horse in water?”

Possible answers included dressage, eventing and show jumping.

The contestant chose the correct answer, eventing, as chaser Jenny picked show jumping.

Utterly stunned, Bradley looked down the camera lens open-mouthed in disbelief.

As the contestants laughed at her series of wrong answers, Bradley snapped: “Are you winding me up?”

Allan then raised his arms and gasped: “I could have gone for £25,000, but hey-ho! No regrets.”

Viewers took to social media, with one writing: “Jenny c’mon you’re supposed to be the chaser #thechase.”

“Something tells me Allan would have beaten Jenny even if she was on form! Congrats to Allan, he’ll be playing in the #FinalChase! #TheChase,” posted another.

NHS crisis: Obese patients 'are eating themselves to DEATH' to get free gastric surgery https://briefnews.eu/nhs-crisis-obese-patients-are-eating-themselves-to-death-to-get-free-gastric-surgery/ https://briefnews.eu/nhs-crisis-obese-patients-are-eating-themselves-to-death-to-get-free-gastric-surgery/#respond Sun, 05 Nov 2017 08:02:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nhs-crisis-obese-patients-are-eating-themselves-to-death-to-get-free-gastric-surgery/

It comes as research has shown that hospital doctors are seeing an overweight patient every 15 seconds.

Weight-related health problems are costing hospitals almost £2billion every year.

There were a record 632,975 hospital appointments last year where medics noted that the patient was obese, NHS digital records show.

This is a rise of 19 per cent in the past year and more than double the number it was four years earlier.

Doctors reported cases where obese patients were so desperate for help they ate more so that they could become fat enough to meet criteria for NHS stomach-shrinking operations.

Professor Philip James, past president of the World Obesity Federation, said: “These figures should shock policy makers who should realise all measures taken so far have not succeeded in tackling the problem.

“Obesity and related health problems are among the biggest crises of our era and will bankrupt the NHS.”

In many parts of the country patients are having to meet increasingly restrictive local authority criteria to qualify for bariatric surgery due to funding cuts.

Some are now rationing weight loss surgery to the super-obese.

Professor David Haslam, a leading obesity expert, said: “I’ve seen patients who have eaten more to qualify for weight loss surgery and some have even been advised to do so by their consultants.

“Its clearly a farcical situation where parents are denied life-saving surgery due to funding cuts.

“Even the most fat-phobic taxpayer should rejoice at weight loss surgery which pays for itself in one to three years in reduced obesity related health costs.”

Tam Fry, chairman of the National Obesity Forum, said: “Once you are obese there comes a point when you cease to be just obese and you develop problems such as diabetes, cancer, heart and joint problems.

“This nation has been so lamentable in preventing this obesity epidemic and the huge cost is likely to bring down the NHS.

“We are in a situation where desperate patients are so obese they want bariatric surgery but local health authorities are running out of money and cutting back on this so people continue to get fatter so they can have surgery.

“They are eating themselves to death.”

Research, published in the journal Obesity Reviews, showed overweight and obese people have almost 40 per cent higher total health care costs.

The findings, based on hospital admissions of more than one million women aged between 55 and 79 in England, blamed excess weight for £662million of hospital costs.

Taking in this data to include men and adults of all ages, Professor James calculates this would account for almost £2billion extra hospital costs a year.

Piers Morgan and Lord Prescott CLASH in most explosive GMB debate EVER: 'Are we done now?' https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-and-lord-prescott-clash-in-most-explosive-gmb-debate-ever-are-we-done-now/ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-and-lord-prescott-clash-in-most-explosive-gmb-debate-ever-are-we-done-now/#respond Mon, 25 Sep 2017 08:07:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-and-lord-prescott-clash-in-most-explosive-gmb-debate-ever-are-we-done-now/

Appearing on the ITV show, the Labour party member was there to talk about Brexit, but ended up having a war of words with the hosts.

It all started when Morgan, 52, challenged Prescott about how the left-wing party has deviated from their electoral manifesto.

He started his comment explaining that he had “great respect”, something which angered the 79-year-old, who snapped back: “Don’t start the great respect, just disagree with me.”

Clearly not one to back down, Morgan speedily replied: “I didn’t mean great respect, you’re right – let’s get on with it.”

The argument only got more explosive throughout, as Prescott demanded to know how long the outspoken presenter intended to be in his GMB job, adding: “You don’t know how bl**dy long.”

Morgan was visibly shocked, replying: “I do know exactly how long I will be in this job, but it will be shorter if you keep swearing at this time in the morning.”

It didn’t stop Prescott, who made the same curse just moments later before getting involved in a very sticky moment with Morgan about the way they both answer personal questions.

When asked about his inability to provide a straight answer on whether he supports legal union strikes, Prescott became personal.

Morgan insisted: “What’s not helpful is people like you who profess to be a straight talker, simply refusing to give a simple answer.”

However, the Labour stalwart fought back: “When I asked you a straight question about phone tapping, you didn’t give a straight answer… It’s about where you stand.”

Not letting the personal comment get to him, Morgan replied: “Here’s the real world – it’s your inability to answer a straight question.

“It’s very telling and you can get as personal as you like, but it won’t hide that to viewers because you don’t want the headlines.”

Prescott ended by asking if they were “done”, before insisting that it is up to the electorate to decide on the quality of his answers, reminding Morgan that around 13 million supported the Labour manifesto during the last election.

Clearly bewildered by the end of the interview, Morgan told a stunned Reid: “We’ve just interviewed a wild animal, the great beast, the gorilla – Prezza.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.

Statins users 'are genetically predisposed to suffering muscle aches and pains' https://briefnews.eu/statins-users-are-genetically-predisposed-to-suffering-muscle-aches-and-pains-2/ https://briefnews.eu/statins-users-are-genetically-predisposed-to-suffering-muscle-aches-and-pains-2/#respond Wed, 30 Aug 2017 01:36:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/statins-users-are-genetically-predisposed-to-suffering-muscle-aches-and-pains-2/

Statins and woman with aching muscles GETTY

People are genetically predisposed to suffering muscle aches and pains when taking statins

Many people prescribed the cholesterol-lowering pills stop taking them because of the side effect putting them at higher risk of developing diseases of the heart and blood vessels.

Now a study led by the University of Dundee found there was a common variant in a gene that predisposes people to developing muscle aches, regardless of whether they are taking statins.

But there were a genetic sub-group of people who have a higher risk of muscle aches caused by the pills.

The findings could allow doctors to screen people for this gene so they can be given alternatives while those genetically predisposed to muscle aches could be warned about the possibility of developing symptoms and be closely monitored.

It is estimated between seven and 29 per cent of those prescribed statins complain of muscle aches.

Those who cannot tolerate statins are offered alternative treatments include ezetimibe and a new class of drugs called PCSK9-inhibitors.

Professor Colin Palmer said: “We found that there are people in the general population who carry a genetic factor that predisposes them to muscle aches.

“If these people are put on statins, they might discontinue their medication in the erroneous belief that it is the statin that is making their muscles ache.

“At the same time, we observed that there is a genetic sub-group of patients who are susceptible to statin-specific muscle ache, although at this stage we don’t understand the mechanism responsible for this effect.”

Previous research found a genetic variant of the LILRB5 (leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor subfamily-B member 5) gene was associated with lower levels of enzymes called creatine phosphokinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH).

These enzymes are released from injured muscle tissue. Raised CK levels are often taken as clinical confirmation of adverse muscle-based reactions to statin therapy.

This suggested the LILRB5 variant could be involved in muscle-related symptoms so the scientists hypothesised the variant would reduce the risk of muscle-based symptoms, while the more common form of the gene, seen in 60 per cent of the Caucasian population, might increase risk.

The study looked at the association between the LILRB5 variant and statin intolerance.

They selected statin users who had stopped taking statins and divided them into those who had raised CK levels, defined as general statin intolerance, and those intolerant to the lowest approved dose of a statin before switching or discontinuing therapy defined as low dose intolerance).

Woman with muscle pain GETTY

It is estimated between seven and 29 per cent of those prescribed statins complain of muscle aches

This was done because some patients do not necessarily show the expected raised CK levels, but do experience muscle aches.

Among 11,912 Scottish statin users taking part in the Genetics of Diabetes Audit and Research, Tayside Scotland (GoDARTS) study it was found the likelihood of statin intolerance was increased in patients who carried two identical copies of the common form of the LILRB5 gene.

In particular there was a two-fold increased risk of general statin intolerance and a 1.4-fold increased risk of low dose intolerance after taking into account important factors that could affect the results, such as the patients’ use of other medications, type of statin and its dosage, diabetes status, age and sex.

A study of 661 Swedes and Britons with a more severe type of intolerance, statin-induced myopathy, or muscle disease, and another of 8,749 patients from 26 countries who developed muscle aches after taking the statin rosuvastatin confirmed the results.

A meta-analysis of these and of a third in which no significant effect could be seen, showed patients with two copies of the common form of the gene had 1.3-fold increased risk of suffering adverse effects associated with statin intolerance compared to those without identical copies.

In the international clinical trial, the researchers could determine how many patients receiving statin therapy developed muscle aches, as opposed to those who were given placebo.

Statins were not associated with an increased risk, while the common form of the LILRB5 gene was clearly associated with an overall increased risk of muscle aches.

However, true statin-specific muscle aches could only be observed in patients who had one or both copies of the variant form of the gene, which would normally have protected them from muscle aches that were not caused by statins.

Professor Palmer added: “This means that it would be possible to test prospective statin users for key genetic variants, including LILRB5, to prevent people being put on statins if they are likely to have an adverse reaction to them.

“Adverse reactions are the driving reason for therapy cessation, which puts the patient at an increased risk of a cardiovascular event.

“This is the first time a genetic variant thought to be involved in the repair and regeneration of muscles has been found to be associated with this side effect.”

First author Postdoctoral Research Assistant Dr Moneeza Siddiqui added further research was planned to confirm exactly how the genetic variant is involved in the repair of muscles.

She said: “All we know as facts are that the immune system is involved in the repair and regeneration of muscles, that our gene (LILRB5) is involved in the immune system, and, more specifically, that people with two identical copies of the genetic variant have lower expression of a key factor, called Foxp3, that enables the mechanism by which the immune system repairs muscle cells.

“So, we have a strong hypothesis for the involvement of our gene in the process of muscle repair and recovery.”The study was published in the European Heart Journal.

Holly Willoughby shares a picture of her This Morning outfit with her fans every day – but one thing often bothers commenters.

Where the 36-year-old presenter stands to pose for the pic, the floor’s paint is peeling off and often causes problems for viewers.

Her fans didn’t hold back today when she flaunted her Roland Mouret skirt and New Look top.

One said: “Holly are This Morning skint, it looks like there putting you in the cleaners bucket cupboard.”

Another added :”You really need to let me in and paint that floor its starting to bug me im having a Sheldon moment…”

Regardless of where the picture was taken it’s fair to say Holly looked fabulous in her designer skirt.

The pencil skirt hugged her figure, showing off  her impressive curves.

While the skirt will have set back the wardrobe department £650, her top was cheap and cheerful from New Look.

Yesterday Holly Willoughby looked fabulous in a floral frock – but the star’s legs weren’t the only thing capturing people’s attention in the photograph.

The snap captured two very hard working members of the This Morning crew in the background.

Holly wrote: “…spot the crew in the background!”Two men are in the back of the picture with one throwing his arms into the air.

The 100 Actress Reacts to the Latest Death: 'Are You Kidding Me?!' https://briefnews.eu/the-100-actress-reacts-to-the-latest-death-are-you-kidding-me/ https://briefnews.eu/the-100-actress-reacts-to-the-latest-death-are-you-kidding-me/#respond Thu, 23 Feb 2017 03:24:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-100-actress-reacts-to-the-latest-death-are-you-kidding-me/

Just when Luna thought she hit rock bottom on The 100, along came Wednesday’s episode to remind her that things can always get worse.

The journey to Becca’s abandoned laboratory was difficult for everyone — Raven, in particular, can’t seem to catch a damn break — but at least most of them made it out alive. The same, unfortunately, can’t be said for Nyko.

“I was like, ‘Another one? For real? Are you kidding me?!’” actress Nadia Hilker (aka Luna) tells TVLine about her reaction to Nyko’s death. “That was my first response. My second thought was, ‘How am I going to portray this?’ Because it feels like Luna has been crying in every episode so far. She keeps losing people!”

Hilker admits, however, that Luna’s parade of losses “makes her arc far more interesting,” as it begs the question: “How do we act in life when there’s nothing left to lose?” Had Nyko not been killed by a drone this week, Hilker says she could have seen Luna telling him, “Let’s go to my island and chill for the next 50 years. We’ll just drink tea and make music.” (Sadly, that wasn’t meant to be.)

As for Luna’s blatant distrust of Skaikru — which is admittedly justified, given how they’re exploiting her nightblood for their own survival — Hilker says some things will never change.

“Even though she agrees to help them, at no point does she like any of these people,” Hilker assures us. “There’s a beautiful moment between Luna and Murphy next week, but she’s still not going to be friends with anyone.”
