Watch '80s Nerds Play Video Games in a Starcade Marathon, Streaming Now https://briefnews.eu/watch-80s-nerds-play-video-games-in-a-starcade-marathon-streaming-now/ https://briefnews.eu/watch-80s-nerds-play-video-games-in-a-starcade-marathon-streaming-now/#respond Sat, 02 Sep 2017 01:05:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watch-80s-nerds-play-video-games-in-a-starcade-marathon-streaming-now/

Before there were e-sports — heck, before the original Nintendo even came to America — there was Starcade.

The 1982-84 game show, which pitted video-game nerds against each other in vintage arcade games like Pac-Man, Centipede and Donkey Kong, is back this week, with gaming site Twitch streaming a six-day Starcademarathon that runs through this Sunday. And it’s only gotten better with age — an irresistible combo of old-school gaming and Reagan-era kitsch.

Originally airing on TBS and later in syndication, Starcade featured two contestants answering a few video game-themed trivia questions before going head-to-head on the controls, trying to get the high score in a wide array of then-current games. And the grand prize? An arcade game you can take home, of course!

For lifelong gamers, it’s a thrill just to see these classic games back in action. (Dragon’s Lair! Joust! Q-Bert!) And even if you’re not joystick-inclined, Starcade is still a treasure trove of terrible ’80s fashion, hilariously useless consolation prizes and the deadpan joys of host Geoff Edwards, who had a surprising amount of video-game knowledge, despite being way older than Atari’s usual demographic.

Plus, if you miss this week’s marathon because you were too busy mashing buttons, don’t worry: Starcade‘s entire run is being remastered by Shout! Factory and will be made available on their streaming site in September. Game on!

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

Stranger Things' (Dark) Season 2 Trailer Riffs on Ghostbusters, 'Thriller,' Close Encounters and More '80s Greatness https://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-dark-season-2-trailer-riffs-on-ghostbusters-thriller-close-encounters-and-more-80s-greatness/ https://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-dark-season-2-trailer-riffs-on-ghostbusters-thriller-close-encounters-and-more-80s-greatness/#respond Sat, 22 Jul 2017 23:18:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-dark-season-2-trailer-riffs-on-ghostbusters-thriller-close-encounters-and-more-80s-greatness/

We didn’t even have to say so much as “trick or… ,” and still, we got an early Halloween treat at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday: a brand-spanking-new trailer for Season 2 of Stranger Things.

As we’d been forewarned about the Netflix hit’s fresh episodes (dropping Friday, Oct. 27), the clip confirms what Noah Schnapp (Will) called the “darker and more eerie” tone of the series’ sophomore season. Peppered with totally excellent ’80s nods (Dragon’s Lair!), the video also gives us our first glimpse of this season’s ginomrous, omnipedal threat in action and hints at how Eleven will return to the fold.

Per the show’s official synopsis, Season 2 will find the residents of 1984 Hawkins contending with something far scarier than leg warmers and Kajagoogoo — “a bigger, [more] sinister entity” than even the demagorgon. New additions to the cast include Paul Reiser (Mad About You), Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings) and Will Chase (Nashville) as the patriarch of the new family in town.

Press PLAY on the video above to check out the trailer, then hit the comments. On a scale of 1 (I’m in no hurry) to 10 (Must. Watch. Now!), how eager are you to binge Season 2?

Snowfall Review: FX's '80s Drug Drama Is Too Scattered to Get You Hooked https://briefnews.eu/snowfall-review-fxs-80s-drug-drama-is-too-scattered-to-get-you-hooked/ https://briefnews.eu/snowfall-review-fxs-80s-drug-drama-is-too-scattered-to-get-you-hooked/#respond Mon, 03 Jul 2017 00:51:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/snowfall-review-fxs-80s-drug-drama-is-too-scattered-to-get-you-hooked/ There’s an intriguing, vibrant story at the heart of FX’s new drama Snowfall. Unfortunately, there are also two other, less interesting stories that come along with it — and the show ends up OD’ing on an excess of ambition.

Snowfall, debuting this Wednesday at 10/9c, comes from co-creator/executive producer John Singleton, who immortalized the streets of South Central L.A. with his iconic ’90s film Boyz N the Hood. Here, he takes us to his old stomping ground a decade earlier, in the summer of 1983, when small-time weed dealer Franklin (Damson Idris) gets his first tantalizing taste of the cocaine trade. What Franklin and his friends don’t know, though, is that crack cocaine is about to hit their streets… and change those streets forever.

The visual style of Snowfall immediately commands your attention: Every frame is saturated with color, with lots of lens flare, swooping camera moves and quick cuts. (Plus, the show is set to a throbbing soundtrack of ’80s proto hip-hop classics.) Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah — a pair of Belgian filmmakers making a big leap to Hollywood here — helm the first two episodes and set a bold, inventive template for future episodes to follow. Even when the storytelling stumbles (and we’ll get to that in a minute), Snowfall is still a dazzling feast for the eyes.

Snowfall FX Damson Idris FranklinFranklin’s story is a familiar one — a smart, resourceful kid discovers that crime does pay — but Singleton and co-creators Eric Amadio and Dave Andron (Justified) find a way to make it fresh. Idris, a British newcomer, is magnetic as Franklin, and Michael Hyatt (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) brings real warmth as Franklin’s hard-working mom Cissy. Franklin’s world is full of vividly drawn characters: his weed-slinging Uncle Jerome (Amin Joseph), who doesn’t want to mess around with coke; his hothead friend Leon (Isaiah John); his loose-cannon Israeli drug supplier Avi Drexler (Alon Moni Aboutboul), who enjoys shooting henchmen in the chest to test his bulletproof vests and rolling a bowling ball into rows of Champagne bottles… it’s all more than enough plot for one show to explore.

But Snowfall, unwisely, doesn’t just stop there. It tries to weave in two more stories on top of Franklin’s: a Mexican wrestler named Gustavo (Sergio Peris-Mencheta) who gets hired to be the muscle for a powerful crime family, and a CIA operative named Teddy (Carter Hudson) who strikes up a partnership with a Nicaraguan soldier. Neither story works as well as Franklin’s does; the CIA subplot, in particular, is drab and impenetrably dense, and not interesting enough for us to try to untangle. (The wrestler story at least has Breaking Bad alum Emily Rios, who’s very good as the crime lord’s no-nonsense daughter Lucia.)

Snowfall FX Emily Rios LuciaThe result is a show that’s far too scattered, and never builds any narrative momentum because it’s always cutting away to another plotline. It’s frustrating to get invested in Franklin’s story, only to shift focus to Gustavo or Teddy just when things are heating up. Singleton and his fellow writers seem to be going for a kaleidoscopic, Traffic-like saga about the advent of crack in America, but to pull that off successfully, all parts of the story need to be equally compelling, and here, they’re just not. Franklin’s story might someday intersect with Gustavo and Teddy’s in meaningful ways… but who wants to stick around long enough to find out?

Also, a word of warning to squeamish viewers: Snowfall vigorously pushes the boundaries of basic cable, with graphic depictions of violence, nudity and rape. And that, on top of the aforementioned visual flair, can make the show almost overwhelming to watch. Even Franklin’s adventures in the crime world feel a little too reminiscent of a shoot-’em-up video game like Grand Theft Auto, like he has to complete a series of missions before leveling up to Apprentice Coke Dealer. When the show leans on flashy style and shock value, we sometimes lose touch with the characters’ emotions and motivations, even Franklin’s.

Still, Franklin’s heart-pounding tale of ambition, powered by Idris’ performance, is nearly good enough on its own to make Snowfall worth watching. And I appreciate the refreshing jolt of new blood, with its rookie directors and cast of mostly unknown actors, that Snowfall brings to the TV scene. But the Gustavo and Teddy storylines muddy the narrative waters too much to justify a recommendation, even in these lean summer months. Like a greedy drug dealer, they cut their pure product with too much filler… and we’re ready to buy elsewhere.

THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: FX’s drug drama Snowfall boasts bold visuals and one compelling storyline, but the other subplots fall too flat to recommend it.

GLOW Review: Netflix Comedy Puts '80s Kitsch in a Hilarious Headlock https://briefnews.eu/glow-review-netflix-comedy-puts-80s-kitsch-in-a-hilarious-headlock/ https://briefnews.eu/glow-review-netflix-comedy-puts-80s-kitsch-in-a-hilarious-headlock/#respond Mon, 12 Jun 2017 08:29:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/glow-review-netflix-comedy-puts-80s-kitsch-in-a-hilarious-headlock/ TV Review Grade B+If Orange Is the New Black had a lighthearted, rough-and-tumble kid sister who liked putting people in headlocks, that sister would look a lot like Netflix’s GLOW.

That makes sense. GLOW hails from OITNB‘s Carly Mensch and Nurse Jackie‘s Liz Flahive, who have a proven track record of wringing comedy from unlikely situations. (OITNB boss Jenji Kohan also is an executive producer on GLOW.) The subject matter here gives them a head start: Though not a reboot in the usual sense of the word, GLOW‘s heritage is the 1980s TV program of the same name — which stands for Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling — a schlocky, silly female counterpart to the wildly popular World Wrestling Federation broadcasts of the time.

The Netflix series chronicles a B-movie director’s attempts to cash in on the wrestling craze despite various roadblocks, the largest of which is a cast full of women with little experience in the ring and/or in front of a camera. One major exception is Ruth, played with plucky zeal by Community grad Allison Brie. Ruth is a non-working, Los Angeles-based actress who attends the show’s casting call out of desperation. When she gets the gig, she joins a ragtag(team) ensemble that includes a professional stunt woman, a party girl, some hairdressers, the daughter of a famous wrestler and someone who fancies herself part wolf, among others.

GLOW Review Netflix Premiere Allison Brie Wrestling Comedy

The season, which premieres on Friday, June 23, follows the show-within-a-show’s uneven path from concept to first episode. Much of GLOW‘s joy and comedic success comes from watching neurotic Ruth and her fellow wrestling noobs learn the moves and hone their ringside personas; my only real beef with the series is that the casting process goes on longer than feels necessary, delaying the point where the women can start to do their rope-bouncing, pile-driving thing (or, at least, fake it until they make it).

As hack director Sam, Marc Maron (Maron) is a curmudgeonly ball of cutting one-liners and exasperated sighs; think a more likable, though no less messed-up, version of Litchfield Correctional Facility’s Caputo. And Betty Gilpin (Nurse Jackie) is perfectly cast as Debbie, a new mom and former daytime drama actress who gets drawn into the action after an unexpected betrayal blows her world asunder. (She also rocks some rather amazing ’80s hairstyles.)

GLOW Review Netflix Premiere Allison Brie Wrestling Comedy

That brings us to GLOW‘s look, which lovingly embraces the Reagan era’s kitschier notes — thong leotards, blue eyeshadow, neon everything — without letting them distract from the women’s very compelling journey toward creating something new and exciting. In a sense, that’s the approach the Netflix series takes toward its source material, as well, treating an often-mocked concept with gentle humor and a lot of respect.

Wrestling is “a soap opera! This whole thing is a soap opera!” one character exclaims in a moment of happy revelation. Damn straight — and GLOW is the behind-the-scenes look that’ll suck you in faster than a Friday cliffhanger.

THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: A very strong, diverse ensemble? A story that keeps you coming back for more? An appreciation for female-centric subject matter? Fans of Orange Is the New Black will find themselves on familiar ground with GLOW — and that

Off the Record: Real talk with a fresh wave of musical influencers who will be making moves onto your new playlist. Watch the rest of this OZY original series here.

Relaxed “sha-la-las” float above the throwback synth and rhythmichandclaps. The cowbell comes in loud and clear. Cue the instrumental interlude. Andrés Jaime taps one foot, jiving to the music as he slams down notes on the keyboard.

Jaime is laying down his original, ’80s-infused tracks, butthe tiny, slim-cut-jeans-wearing DJ from Mexico was born in 1996. A black X on the back of one hand signals that there’sno alcohol allowed for the under-21-year-old at the SXSW venue where he’s performing. Jaime learned about the ’80s from his father, who introduced his son to his favorites, stalwarts like Michael Jackson and Prince. Music has always called Jaime — as a child he was glued to the television, watching MTV, and he was known for grabbing a trash can and a pair of spoons to drum up beats. Now he’s producing tracks from his bedroomin Mexico City and has put off college until he has more timefor studying. He’s focused on his career at the moment; besides, school never felt like a priority. “I don’t know,” he says, shrugging. “It’s been a really good and fast ride up. I can’t believe I’m here.”

After playing with a band, Jaime has gone solo with a project he calls Wet Baes — the name is inspired by the sweaty, hard-dancing female groupies of the ’80s. As Wet Baes, he released his first EP, Youth Attraction, in 2015, and he’s started gearing up for his first album drop. In the meantime, he’s producing tracks for other musicians in Mexico and playing festivals, including SXSW, Bahidorá and Ruido Fest. Tracks like “Dancing in the Dark”(yes, like the Springsteen song) tap into the isolated, lonely side of Jaime — a musician distanced from the time period he loves — while recent ones like “Changes”feel more optimistic.

As ’80s music has its moment — thanks in part to Jack Antonoff’s Bleachers and the Netflix hit Stranger Things, with its synthy Survive soundtrack — Jaime could be uniquely positioned to take off. He’s already caught the attention of Latin culture magazine Remezcla, which said of one of his latest tracks, “The effective bounce of that palm-muted two-note guitar riff, and the sassy vocals, all evoke an inimitable elegance.”

For now, Jamie is independent and unsigned to a label. “I believe that those things are going to happen with time,” he says. He’s got the time — and kinda likes the liberty.

Time After Time Team Previews Epic '80s Trip, Jack the Ripper's Backstory https://briefnews.eu/time-after-time-team-previews-epic-80s-trip-jack-the-rippers-backstory/ https://briefnews.eu/time-after-time-team-previews-epic-80s-trip-jack-the-rippers-backstory/#respond Sun, 19 Mar 2017 15:16:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/time-after-time-team-previews-epic-80s-trip-jack-the-rippers-backstory/ For a show about time-hopping, Time After Time has been quite stationary following its premiere jaunt to modern-day Manhattan. But that all changes with this Sunday’s episode (ABC, 9/8c), in which H.G. Wells and Jane take the time machine for a spin to 1980.

There, the duo find themselves in the Long Island childhood home of a three-year-old Vanessa. The future business mogul is “the whole thrust of the story,” executive producer Kevin Williamson says. “Everything’s based on Vanessa Anders and her lineage, and we see how Wells intertwines into that. It’s a big, huge, epic melodrama [about] these two warring families.”

Time After Time SpoilersJohn, meanwhile, takes his own joyride to 1918 Paris, France, in the following Sunday’s outing. “He goes in search of his backstory a little bit,” Williamson previews. “We open him up, and you see what makes him tick, and what kind of Achilles’ heel he may have that has power over him. It humanizes him, in a way.”

Adds his portrayer Josh Bowman: “There was something that was an emotional attachment to [John] that he goes in search for. In that episode, you see somewhat of a redemptive quality in the character.” (Don’t worry, the show is not out to make Jack the Ripper into a cuddly serial killer. “He’s not on a redemptive path by any means, but we layer him enough so that you understand him,” Williamson notes.)

As for more journeys into to the past — or the future, for that matter — they will be sporadic, as the series is “all present day” with “three or four” time-travel trips, Williamson says. Rather than relying on that storytelling device too much, “we open up the H.G. Wells playbook, and we start pulling from his greatest hits,” the EP explains. “The idea is that you see the inspiration for all his [novels]. You’ll start to see little elements of The Invisible Man. In a lot of ways, Griffin in The Invisible Man is a lot like John in terms of his character and his backstory.”

Last Man on Earth Video: Kristen Wiig Is Loving the '80s in First Promo https://briefnews.eu/last-man-on-earth-video-kristen-wiig-is-loving-the-80s-in-first-promo/ https://briefnews.eu/last-man-on-earth-video-kristen-wiig-is-loving-the-80s-in-first-promo/#respond Sun, 19 Feb 2017 21:50:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/last-man-on-earth-video-kristen-wiig-is-loving-the-80s-in-first-promo/

Kristen Wiig dances the night away when she first arrives on The Last Man on Earth.

In the first promo (which will first air tonight during Fox’s primetime line-up) released ahead of her “mysterious” midseason debut, the Bridesmaids actress can be seen exiting some sort of enclosed vault dressed in a garbage bag, protective goggles and a surgical mask — presumably in fear of catching the virus. Once she realizes she’s in the clear, Wiig strips down to patterned leggings and a bright silver vest as she lip-syncs her way through Laura Branigan’s 1982 hit “Gloria.” (Did we mention there’s also an adorable puppy involved?)

Wiig last acted opposite series lead Will Forte in 2010’s MacGruber, a feature-length spinoff of Saturday Night Live‘s popular MacGyver spoof. No further details have been disclosed about her top-secret recurring role.

Press PLAY on the promo above, then tell us if you’ll be tuning in for Wiig’s arrival on the Last Man on Earth midseason premiere (airing Sunday, March 5 at 9:30/8:30c).
