Susanna Reid pushes Rees-Mogg row in heated Iain Duncan Smith debate 'He won't be leader'

Yesterday’s interview saw , but despite the politician insisting that he wasn’t interested in taking Theresa May’s role as head of the Conservative Party, the presenter pressed Iain over whether or not he believed he had a chance at becoming the next Prime Minister.

After showing a short clip of Jacob’s controversial comments, which riled the nation, she demanded to know: “What do you make of what he said?”

Clearly shocked at the direction a debate which originally focussed on the Brexit Repeal Bill had taken, Iain replied: “These things are all personal things and opinions and they have to be because they’re about belief.”

Not impressed that he appeared to be dodging her question, Susanna pressed: “Do you share the same view?”

“No, I don’t,” he hit back. “I voted for gay marriage. I am a strong supporter of stability and I believe if people want to have that final point, then it is the right thing to do… I don’t agree with him but it is a personal view.”

Susanna’s co-host Ben Shephard then jumped in to ask: “Can someone expressing views so divisive with opinions like that be the leader of the Conservative party?”

“Thats not for me to decide,” Iain explained. “If the party doesn’t agree with his sentiments that may well be a tipping point.

“By the way, Jacob has already made it clear that he’s absolutely not interested in being leader.”

Susanna quipped: “He didn’t say that for 100 per cent…”

“No one ever says 100 per cent,” he snapped back.
