Strictly Come Dancing opened this evening with a special musical tribute to Aretha Franklin.
However, the studio audience clapped and cheered throughout the entire routine, something viewers were not impressed with.
Fans watching at home instantly took to social media in a huff.
One viewer fumed: “The inane clapping is killing this Aretha tribute @bbcstrictly SO SO not necessary #Strictly.”
“Do we really have to have the audience clapping the whole time? I want to hear the choir and music! #strictly,” posted another.
A third raged: “The #Strictly audience clapping along to this Aretha tribute is nothing less than an insult.”
“Please shut the bl**dy crowd up! No need to scream and clap all the way through. Let us enjoy the music #Strictly,” huffed another.
A fifth screamed: “WHY MUST THE AUDIENCE ON #STRICTLY CLAP ON EVERY BEAT. WHY? WHY? SERIOUSLY. WHY? EVERY F**KIN’ WEEK. WHY?”
“This is a tribute to Aretha Franklin, a great singer, which the #Strictly audience is marking by shouting and so drowning out the singers,” sighed another.
Later in the show, Dr Ranj Singh became the sixth celebrity to depart Strictly after facing Charles Venn in the dreaded dance off.
The judges’ scores were combined with the results of the viewers’ votes to decide the lowest scoring two couples facing the dance off.
Charles and his professional partner Karen Clifton and Dr Ranj and his professional partner Janette Manrara both performed once more.
Charles and Karen performed their Viennese Waltz to Piano Man by Billy Joel and Dr Ranj and Janette performed their Samba to Freedom 90 by George Michael.
Craig Revel Horwood chose to save Dr Ranj and Janette, saying: “I found this one really difficult actually, two very different dancers, two very different sets of dance skill as well. But for me the most improved in that set of skills was Ranj and Janette.”
Darcey Bussell chose to save Charles and Karen, noting: “Again, I don’t want to choose between these two lovely gentlemen but for me the more improved performance on the night was Charles and Karen.”
Bruno Tonioli was the third judge to have his say and saved Charles and Karen, adding: “Can I have them both?! Completely contrasting dances, both very entertaining. But I have to choose the most polished dancer and performer and for that reason I choose Charles and Karen.”
Head Judge Shirley Ballas also decided to save Charles and Karen, saying: “First of all for me it’s a heart-breaking decision ‘cause I think both couples have done amazingly well.
“Both couples have made little iddy-biddy errors that I can see but due to great timing, sophistication I am going to choose Charles and Karen.”
Leaving the show, Dr Ranj said: “I can’t express how much this has meant to me. I have made friends for life. I’ve done something that I only could have dreamed of. I just want to say to anyone who ever dreams of this you can, you really can, because I’m here and I’ve done it.”
Strictly Come Dancing continues next Saturday on BBC One at 7pm.
