Strictly Come Dancing 2018: ‘Very emotional’ Karen Clifton in TEARS by impressive Rhumba

Karen, 36, and Charles, 45, took to the dance floor to perform a Rhumba routine to the West Side Story soundtrack.

After their performance, Karen and Charles joined BBC host Tess Daly, 49, to hear the judges critiques on their Rhumba.

Shirley Ballas, 58, told the pair: “Well, in Latin dancing, there are three stages to the basic technique.”

Speaking directly to Karen, Shirley praised the professional, telling her: “You very cleverly put those advanced steps in their.”

The head judge continued: “I thought your hip action was great, I thought you had a sensitivity about putting your hand on her shoulder,” Shirley told Charles.

Bruno Tonioli, 62, then gave his comments on the performance, telling the couple: “I like the fact you made it very tender,” at which point Karen seemed to fill up at the comments.

“It was never pushed. You really balanced your partner,” Bruno continued.

Joining Claudia Winkleman, 46, after hearing the comments, the pair discovered the score they had been awarded for their efforts.

Karen and Charles found themselves joint bottom of the leaderboard after the Strictly quarter-final with a score of 35.

Faye Tozer, 42, topped the leaderboard with her Charleston routine, scoring a combined total of 40.

Earlier this week, Charles and Karen were speaking with Zoe Ball, 48, on spin-off show It Takes Two.

The pair managed to avoid the dance-off last weekend after receiving a score of 30 out of 40 by the judges for their Tango routine.

Instead, it was Ashley Roberts, 37, and Graeme Swann, 39, who faced the save me dance with the latter being eliminated from the competition.

Asking of his reaction after it was announced Ashley would be in the dance-off instead of him, Charles said: “They are technically the best dancers in the group.

“And you’re thinking okay, you know – I said: ‘I guess we better get ready to dance! You know, it’s on!’”

However, the Casualty actor believed they had got the names mixed up following the technical difficulties which arose during the Lindy Hop-a-thon.

Karen added: ““I said: ‘I think they got the wrong name.’”

Zoe explained: “The thing is, though, this is it: You never know with this competition.

“Everyone is voting for their favourite – that’s what happens.”

Charles and Karen will be hoping to secure their place in next week’s semi-final of the dancing competition.
